    If you're still reading this...

    1. Turn off XP.

    2. Do three Newspaper missions (talk to your broker first).

    3. Do the Atlas Park mayhem mission (after the three newspaper missions) and get a Jet Pack. It's cool to fly.

    4. You have to do this before level 10, or you get a Zero-G pack. Which is still cool, but getting both is better. I recommend you blow out of Mercy at level 5 or 6, and start on the Jet Pack right away so you don't have to turn off XP.

Alternately, you could find someone lower level to team with and get the Jet Pack too when their mission comes up, this is just how to get it on your own.
  2. Here's one bug I noticed on live. I'm mentioning it here in case someone else notices it or wants to comment.

I changed my VEAT's Arachnos costume on live. This worked fine. However when I pressed "Next" to go to the powers screen, there were no powers or any GUI at all. I tried unchecking the "Hide Powers" button but it won't accept the click. (I did see very briefly the GUI for powers start to appear when I clicked, but the powers selection buttons would always disappear right away and the "Hide Powers" button remained checked.)

Bug or WAI? It's not like VEATs can customize their powers anyway, but I thought the lack of any GUI at all was odd.
  3. Here's one bug I noticed on live. I'm mentioning it here in case someone else notices it or wants to comment.

Operative Luong in Sharkhead had not text when I tried to talk to him. I haven't noticed him before and he's not in ParagonWiki so I assume he's new. He should at least have a "Go away" message.

He's located by the trainer in Shark, between the two ramps on the south east side of the Arachnos structure there.

That's a rather creative solution. Personally I think they should just fix the AI and/or collision detection. The error conditions seems to occur:

    1. When foes take Knockback and are pushed into corners and tight spaces. The collision detection doesn't recognize or work with animations, so a foe who stands up in a tight space might stand up in a object or wall.

    2. When #1 happens the foe's feet are attached to a surface inside some geometry, but his head or body are in a space that can't be pathed to from that surface. Thus, he's stuck because he can't get his body to go anywhere his feet can go. It seems to me that the AI pathing should be able to recognize this situation and provide a little help when pathing becomes impossible.

I have a GeForce 7900 GS and I've never been able to play on top settings with out turning the game into a slide show. 2nd from lowest ("Performance") always worked best for me. I have no idea how you were ever able to play on maxed out settings with that rig.
  6. If I have the latest Beta on my hard drive, can I do the reverse of setting up a Beta install: copy all files over from /CohBeta to /CityOfHeroes, remove the checksum file, and get a faster "download" install time?

Anything I should be careful of destroying when I do this?

The discrepancy is probably due to quantum. I.e., he wasn't watching the screen closely enough.

    Darn it, now I'm hungry.

You know, you could just log in and look at the numbers for yourself. They are all in game, and your attack rolls are plainly visible in the Combat Window.

On the other hand an Ice/Ice Corruptor would be almost ridiculously powerful. And Ice/Dark Miasma would be just about over-powered.

I agree with almost everything said here, although I personally don't care for Defenders. They just aren't my thing I guess. Masterminds are different and have to be played to be understood. They are very strong PvE however, and solo easily. Robots are my favorite.
  11. Yeah that was awesome. Beginner's best idea ever.

In case Mids screen shots aren't enough, I stripped out my Accuracy enhancements on the Beta server and took a screen shot.

Me fighting an even con minion. Knockout blow has a 1.20 accuracy bonus. 1.20 x 75% = 90%. And that's what you see in the combat window and on the Combat Attributes monitor. Note that my base chance to hit is listed here as "To-Hit Bonus," and is 75%. I'm not running Invincible or Rage.

  13. For a "first primary" I would suggest a (mostly) ranged set.

Robots, Thugs, Mercenaries would all be excellent and would work fine with /Dark.

For Thugs, you get the Bruiser later at 26. Plenty of time to get used to pet controls before then. You'll have the arsonist to practice on for 8 levels.

The damage enhancement definitely works on your pets. If you don't need anything else, then +Dam is a great way to go.

The only bugs right now are Khelds and Doms. Everything else is working. Well, and 2nd build, but that's recent.

And pets that are ordered to attack revert to Bodyguard as soon as their target is dead. (That is, if you did "attack defensive" or just "attack" and they were on Defensive to begin with.)

Your pets will continue to attack, because now they are responding to the aggro they caused, but since they're on Defensive and responding to an attack, that counts as BG mode.

However, normally during the "attack" phase you don't have BG mode. If you do and can confirm it (maybe against a hard target like a GM, so it lasts a while), that might be a bug.

    B) Cancel, resub with one of the plans during that time, get billed immediately and new time with bonus month(s) adds to end of subscription immediately.

    C) Cancel, resub with one of the plans during that time, pay through Paypal and have it applied immediately and new time added to end of current subscription immediately.

I'm pretty sure it's D) don't cancel, just buy some time.

However, you might want to wait for a redname post on exactly how that works. I think your time gets added and your renewal date gets moved to September (after the free month, if you buy a 6 month sub), but I'm only about 85% sure, so I think some clarification is needed.

The linked announcement doesn't say "renew." It says "purchase game time."

When you purchase game account time between November 29th 2010 and December 19tht 2010, you will receive additional rewards.
So, if you plan on keeping your subscription active, just buy some time and get the better rate. (I don't know what happens if you're set to renew at a later time, and then you buy time. I think you get a new renewal date, set for when the sum total of all your time runs out. I'm not 100% sure.)

I think the "cancel your sub" thing is aimed at folks like me, who like to cancel but still play on the time they have already purchased. You just loose the free months if you do that.
  18. Yeah, same deal. I often cancel my subscription just so I can manually renew. I realize that the whole point may be to get me to leave the auto-renewal on but that feels kinda cheesy.

Some clarification could be made here.
  19. Bots/FF was also my first 50 and I still love and play it. It's great on any kind of task force -- you bring great buffs and good damage to a team. Plus the bots work as a kind of aggro spill magnet. Any extra aggro floating around they tend to pick up, which helps keep squishies safe.

With Incarnates, I believe I'll be able to get an entire team past the softcap. That's a huge boost to any team. I doesn't make pretty numbers like other sets do but the effects are very noticeable.

  21. In general, Masterminds go through a funk from around level 18 to level 26. The pets aren't too powerful, you don't have your last pet buf, and until the top tier pet at 26 things can be a little lack luster.

The solution is to team so you can get through those levels quickly.

Other stuff: Dark is awesome, you'll pretty much want to take all your secondary powers. In your primary you might want to consider taking one or two attacks. This can help with damage before you get all 6 pets.

Inherent Stamina is coming up. Get ready to respec to take advantage of it. With a secondary like /Dark you want all the extra powers you can get.

That's about all I can think of. Ask if you have any questions.

    Fun?

To have fun I definitely think you should team up. Get to know some folks, even if casually, and look at interacting with others. Try Freedom or Virtue -- those servers are heavily populated and you'll have the best chance of teaming and leveling up. Don't forget that you can team with anyone. You will automatically be promoted to the leaders level, less one. If you team with a level 50, you'll be level 49.

Check out Praetoria (gotta buy the expansion). The missions are much more interesting for soloists. And since it's new there's a lot more other folks also leveling up their characters.

Also try interacting on the forums some more. Especially your server forum. You can meet folks who play on your server, find out what the popular things to do are, and get yourself invited to those events that you're interested in.

I don't have any specific cure for "it's boring." Different strokes for different folks. But the whole point of any MMO game is to team up, so try that and see if it makes a difference for you.
  23. Personally, I didn't care for either /Poison or /Trick Arrow. Poison was way too much single target, Trick Arrow was way too slow to start.

Bots/FF is an awesome combo, starting right around level 12. However, if you don't like bubbles, that's cool.

I personally would try /Pain, /Traps, /Thermal or /Storm. I have a low level Thugs/Traps and he's awesome. If it weren't for VEATS, I'd be playing him. I also have a low level Demon/Storm that coming along nicely and a Necro/Thermal (with the color on Thermal turned all darky) which also seems nice. For /Pain I have a Dark/Pain Corruptor and I can tell you from teaming that Pain Bringer on a MM pet is insane.

All up to you, but I'd go Thugs/Traps and see how that works for ya.
