I basically dual-boxed a newspaper Council mish set to +2/+8 with my main brute and a newbie alt level-pacted to another newbie.
1-39 on both level-pacted toons
then i broke the pact and took 1 toon from 39-47
That was with A LOT of hours on Friday, Sat, and Sun.
Felt kind of slow so I figured I must not have been maximizing my exp some way. -
-
Fearsome Stare -> Tar Patch -> Empty Clips (with -RES proc) -> Bullet Rain -> run in and hit HOB -> Profit!
Wait, wrong forum .... -
Ok so here is the latest rebuild below. Someone pointed out that you can slot the achilles' -RES into Pistols. So I rejiggered the build to allow that. Unfortunately, to keep N def capped, I had to move a slot into CJ to slot an enzyme (!). Couldn't see a way to do that otherwise. Open to suggestions.
I suppose you could say that 44% N def is fine with all the -TO HIT in /Dark, but there's some margin of safety I suppose in having everything soft-capped before the TO HIT debuffs. So this build still has soft-capped S/L/E/N and can run Pistols-DW-Pistols-Exec now with the -RES in Pistols.
Gotta say I'm finding the damage of the DP set pretty lame.

Quote:I find Pistols - DW - Pistols - Exec [Repeat] to be really easy to chain with relatively low recharge. Per BrandX's comments today on Scrapper board, apparently you can slot the Achilles - RES into Pistols as well, so having 2 chances in a chain to apply it is probably a good thing. As Iggy pointed out, Piercing has a long recharge time that you need ridiculous +rchrg to chain effective (300%?) ... so if the DPS of DW/Exec/Piercing are relatively similar then perhaps the chain I mention really isn't that bad. That's tough to say, since a Blaster will often have powers in their secondary to fall back on, and those are usually better than any of the powers in Dual Pistols for single targets (especially for things like Energy Punch or Bonesmasher). When we're simply talking single targets, the highest DPA power in Dual Pistols is actually the Tier 1, Pistols, followed by Piercing Rounds, Executioner's Shot, and Dual Wield, in that order. Those last three powers, though, are almost identical in terms of their DPA, and once you factor in ArcanaTime, all four of the powers mentioned get very close together.
This basically means that, so long as we're not looking into complicated things like juggling ammunition (so that it's on Fire for every attack except Piercing Rounds, where it is Lethal so you can get the -Res) and Defiance, your top attack chain for straight Dual Pistols is something like: Pistols > (choose Piercing Rounds, Executioner's Shot, or Dual Wield) > repeat.
Overall though on my Corr I am finding the damage of DP pretty lackluster, especially the AOEs, even when boosted with TarPatch. I look at Empty Clips (with -RES achilles) as really just a debuffing attack -
So what kind of mobs are giving better raw inf/exp gain? Are people just creating custom large maps populated with, say, Council or Freaks and going at it. I'm sorry to sound naive, I've just stayed 100% away from AE farming and now with double xp upon us I need to figure out what to do to drive 2 new level-pacted toons to 50.
-
Has anyone figured out the best Dev's Choice AE mission for farming, so you can get regular rewards?

Here is a quick rebuild based on Nihili saying you can get away with S/L soft-capped and E/N/F/C at 33%+ (so one small purp will softcap).
I'm not sure how that works out in practice with no-inspiration things like RWZ Challenge but maybe it's OK.
It lets the build get by with far less expensive gear, and it allows the slotting of more purples and damage procs.
Not sure about the 6-slot Numi in DP ... does the +recov/regen only work when you activate Dull Pain? 6-slot numi looked like a way to get some extra E/N def was all. Have to mess around with slots otherwise.
Also pushed this version over 70% S/L RES w/o unstop.
Hmnnnnn...........

Quote:That being said, I highly value recharge. If you are happy with yours that's great, but if there was one thing I would change in your build... it would be a second slot in Hasten.
Thanks man. It's basically my attempt to make a cartoony figure like The Shadow. Come on double-xp weekend!
I am with you on Hasten. See my last post in the thread. I had to move a slot out in order to put a -KB Karma into Combat Jumping. The question is whether I take the Explosive Strike Proc out of Bullet Rain in order to move that slot into Hasten.
Re running Tough - yes, unlikely to be run solo (only on teams with +end). I guess the hope is that with S/L/E/N softcapped (and great -To Hit in /Dark set), that I won't get hit a lot -- and that the self-heal in Twilight Grasp can fill the gap.
Then again, if I really believe I won't get hit a lot, I probably don't need the -KB IO. I just know how annoying KB is when it happens, so I stuck it in there. -
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=250862
It doesn't seem to need much recharge to run Pist-DW-Pist-Exec for single-target DPS.
Best bet for S/L is using the redside Black Scorp APP for the +S/L/E def shield. That's how I capped S/L on my Fire/MM blaster.
Quote:Sounds interesting. What is your overall recharge like? I think mine's at about 137 pre-purples right now.
Granted I sac'd a bit of positional defense to get there, but like I said, starting with HoB, crossing my fingers and stacking with my melee/ranged/aoe, I'm usually ok. What does get through is easily dealt with most times with Aid Self.
In teams, I'm not worried at all really... so this is more I think a solo player's concern, but it is a valid one.
I was aware that most attacks provide an element of smashing/lethal but I found it hard to get that high up on smashing lethal, and usually at the expense of something else I was trying to accomplish. -
Quote:An MA/INV build with those stats, enough recharge to run SK-CS-SK-CAK, and maybe even Aid Self is something I would be quite excited to see .....
I agree that softcapped S/L and about ~30% E/N/F/C is already sturdy (although I prefer 33% because then you can softcap with one luck inspiration). I run numbers similar to these on my DB/Inv and she's able to handle most content, with the occasional insp use and/or team buffs here and there. -
Per Nihili's suggestion, here's a Brute INV with Fire Melee. Again, based off BassAckward's builds. I got it the closest I could to soft-capped to all ... it's at 44.48% to everything I think. It's probably crazy expensive.
Also I kept trying to switch to Gloom/Dark Oblit but losing Char really screws up E/N def.
I think this build can run Incin - Crem - Fire Sword - GFS, which Werner has said is just under the top chain DPS with better +rchg requirements and better endo use.

Here's the latest MIDS noodling. I moved a Karma -KB into CJ. That meant I had to give up a slot in Hasten, but I can probably live with that. Wish I didn't have to.
Also figured Assault wasn't really making enough difference in damage to run (for the endo cost), so replaced it with Super Speed for 2 reasons: (1) complete stealth with Shadowfall running; (2) place to slot a -SLOW resist.
Also slotted a damage proc into Bullet Rain, figuring it was better used for that spare slot than the +Recharge FF proc. Any thoughts on that? Or should I pull the slot and move it back into Hasten.
Even w/o hasten the build can run Pistols-DW-Pistols-Exec

Quote:I have a thread over in the sadly quiet Corrupter forums near the top about a DP/Dark Corr soft-capped to S/L/E/N with enough recharge to run Pistols-DW-Pistols-Exec and have fun tools in the Dark set to support the AOEs. Sadly, on the Corr forums, nobody seems to give a hoot.I play Dual Pistols which requires a lot of close combat blasting.
I still find I prefer positional defense over typed defense. I get up to 25% (approx) in Melee/Ranged/AoE, then I stop worrying about it. Pop a purple before a brawl and it works very well.
Later game S/L doesn't cover some big damage type (as I understand it), but very, very few attacks are not classified as Melee, Ranged, or AoE.
In my case if I start with HoB, I'm nearly capped in positional def. It's my preference, but in your case, your build would also be a big factor. (if you take Ancillary shields for instance... S/L is probably the way to go.) -
I was grappling in MIDS a long time trying to find a MA/INV build with enough recharge to run SK-CS/CK-SK-CAK and be soft-caped to S/L/E/N ... couldn't do it.
Maybe you can if you are willing to just run S/L softcap. -
I think most people switched to SS/SD or SS/Fire.
If I were you, I'd move around my slotting to at least get E/N def to the soft-cap (45%) and ideally S/L as well.
Then I'd look at how much recharge I need to run the top SS DPS chains -- I think there's some info in the last few pages of the Scrapper board Rikti Pylon thread about this.
Always keeping an eye on regen/recov. -
Quote:I agree. Even with somewhat soft-capped WP builds. Especially on ITFs. Everyone that comes here and says how well their /WP does on ITFs must not be playing with the same "Hey let me go herd this room of Romans" mentality that I have or something. Doing that on my /SR or /SD usually works just fine. Doing it on my /WPs (even softcapped to S/L or L/M) often results in faceplant. My experiences with AFKing on a WP against packs of +4s more often than not involve my face and numerous floors. Whereas this is a testament to my poor ability to build a WP character or something else is left for other people to decide, but I personally think that quote is a bit of an exaggeration unless one cherrypicks his foes.
For 90% of game content, WP seems just dandy but there are some things that just muck with it. I'm a bigger fan of /SR, /SD and potentially (TBD) /Inv. -
I have a somewhat tricked out 50 Claws/SR Brute. He's right about the -RES procs. But even with -Res achilles in Slash, and running the high DPS chain of FU-Focus-Slash-Strke, I'm only getting ~ 180 dps on Pylons.
I could probably improve that by adding +recharge to run FU-Focus-Eviscerate and slotting Evis with the -RES gladiator proc (current cost: 900M+), but it would cost a lot more and my build already was WAY expensive.
I think Fire Melee will pull ahead in DPS with a lower-cost build that requires less recharge and will let you slot up /Invuln to be soft-capped to all positions (or close, like 44.5%) with only 1 foe. [EDITED TO SAY THIS IS INCORRECT - MY FM/INV BUILD IS ONLY GETTING 162 DPS AND IT BLOWS VS. PYLONS]
Plus you have to remember that FU is much less beneficial to a Brute with Fury than to a scrapper. I'd roll a Claws/INV scrapper over a Fire/INV scrap, but the opposite for a brute. -
I'd say FM/Inv just because the Fire DOT is buffed by Fury, and because Fire is less resisted late game than Lethal (Claws).
I'm toying with a FM/Inv concept right now. -
Quote:Revisiting this post.I believe it's this:
Incinerate (3.30, +204%) -> Cremate (3.43, +134%) -> Fire Sword (3.56, +69%)
Incinerate (4.22, +137%) -> Cremate (4.35, +84%) -> Greater Fire Sword (3.56, +237%)
Though I haven't poked my head into the recharge thread recently where Arcanaville was reviewing recharge requirements, and seeing something a little different than our standard calculations. I'd shoot for better than the above to be safe.
You can do slightly more DPS with Greater Fire Sword -> Incinerate -> Fire Sword, but that's a silly chain since it takes MORE recharge than the top chain to do less damage. I also have Incinerate -> Cremate -> Fire Sword -> Greater Fire Sword doing about the same DPS at much lower recharge (+134% in GFS), but that takes four attacks, so is inefficient in a different sense.
I'm not convinced I have the right damage info for Fire. Some things aren't quite making sense to me. I need to review it, but I'm not feeling up for it tonight.
Question: for a Brute, would it be better to work Gloom into a chain?
For instance, if the following chain is close to top DPS:
Incin - Crem - FS - GFS
Would a Brute be better off with: Incin - Gloom - Crem - GFS
Thx. -
Any further thoughts? Anyone actually have good experience with the set?
I wish I could fit in more damage procs but that would mean losing the soft-cap (without full Thunderstrike sets) ... unless someone sees a way around that. -
I was sort of ruling out Fire Melee from having "good AOE" basd on FSC only being up with a base recharge of 20secs (like Foot Stomp). My guess is, in a build, it would have about 6-9 secs of recharge -- for example, on my 50 Shield/FM tank it has 7.7 secs -- and what do you do for AOE while you're waiting? (I think I've read that FM is better on Brutes than Scraps as Fury buffs the DOT ticks?).
By comparison a set like War Mace has pretty good chainable AOE between Crowd Control, Whirling Mace, and Shatter (wide cone, typically hits 3+). On my WM/SR brute, I can basically chain those 3 attacks. My concern with WM is endo usage and having a high DPS single-target chain achievable at reasonable recharge (I think it's Clobber-Shatter-Pulverize-Bash but not sure at DPS).
I'm not set on DB -- it just seemed to offer a reasonable mix of AOE and s-t damage (what with Sweeping in every BF->AV chain, and having Typhoon and 10K for huge groups). I had a 50 DB/WP scrap that I'm shelving, actually.
Hence my indecision. Open to further thoughts!! -
So Bass's crazy DM/INV build -- which is flat out awesome -- has had me thinking a lot lately about making an /INV toon. Something about being soft-capped to all positions with 70%+ S/L resist is quite appealing in a Scrapper. Same for a Brute which potentially pushes 85% resist.
What I can't figure out is, if /INV is going to let you stand among hordes of enemies and thrive, what's the best primary -- either Scrapper or Brute -- to pair with it. I keep thinking about KM but then get bummed out at the AOE potential with just Burst. I think about SS but have been there, done that. Stone Melee has meh AOE. Mace is good AOE & ST and smashing. Elec has good AOE but lame single target. Already have a Kat.
So I think I'm toying with the idea of DB/INV as providing the best mix of single-target (presumably BF->AV) and AOE (with Sweeping, Typhoon, 10K). What do folks think? I know BF benefits scrappers more, but the idea of higher resists on a brute is appealing. On the other hand, I mark down DB for being slashing which is resisted a lot late game.
Still, I can't get the coolness factor of KM/INV out of my head.

Here's an alternate rebuild.
Removes Tactics and replaces it with Hasten. Uses slots to reduce endo in Shadowfall, and to add procs like FF +recharge. Hasten helps HOB recharge (10 secs faster?), plus Tar Patch and Howling. Might be worth it. Still soft-capped to S/L/E/N.
You can go a step further and add Armageddon Proc to HOB, and stay soft-cap using Enzymes and an extra IO Def slot in CJ. But that priceys-ups the build.
Even w/o hasten the build should be able to run Pistols - DW - Exec, which appears to be close the the highest DPS (for Dual Pistols) single-target chain that doesn't require ridiculous recharge. Can't replace Exec with Piercing as recharge on the latter is too long. Anyone know actually the DPS of Pistols-DW-Exec? Assuming Incendiary?
