I've hit the hard cap on the trials without running any of my defensive toggles. Zombie's right, there's a very good chance you'll be getting so much defense from league mates that you won't need any of your own.

My SG all up and quit when the trials came out and there was no small group/SG path. Since then I've leveled a character to 50 but have no way to get her into the SG. I'd love to see a way to self invite.

People can throw out a lot of reasons why they avoid it, but it all boils down to it being the most difficult and time consuming of the 3. Two Emp Merits already cover the time consuming factor in i21, and whether you enjoy difficulty or not is a personal matter.

It's just my feeling if all 3 were around the same difficulty, people wouldn't outcast one of them. I have no idea how Snow Globe thinks less people will play the trials if they were tougher. I guess that speaks more about himself as a person than anything.
Here's the thing. If I were being asked to run trials one time, then that arc could be like Keyes and I'd run it. But if I'm being asked to run something multiple times, 20+ times per character (at minimum), and I'm given a choice between repeating Keyes or BAF/Lambda, I'm going to choose BAF/Lambda every time. That's not backing down before a challenge, that's wisdom.

If the game asks for ginding, then the game is going to have to acknowledge that people are going to choose the easiest path through that grinding.

On the topic of the ITF, I like it for one main reason: it's tons of foes, even waves of foes, presenting themselves for a good smacking. If I can wind up hip deep in piles of defeated enemies then I'm probably going to like that arc, and the ITF is the best IMO at presenting that situation.

You know, until I looked at that thread I had forgotten that I played the CoH RPG at GenCon (I think). I played Ms Liberty if I remember correctly. Funny that I had forgotten that until now!

I don't recall it being a bad system at all. I remember having a good time.

    Thanks for that link!

Stacking other sources of -dmg with this is highly beneficial for plugging up those holes, like Psi. Kinetic Melee can hand out more -dmg than other sets, but any combo can get at least 35% total in -dmg by taking Darkest Night. Choosing the right Interface slot will add more, as well as Void Radial Judgement. Basically you can get in excess of 85-90% -dmg for a period of time. This isn't as resisted by AVs as some debuffs are, too.
Just a quick, and hopefully inoffensive, correction. -DMG isn't like having personal resistance for yourself, it's like giving everyone in the area resistance! In other words, it's even better than what you're stating.

I know you know that, we've participated in enough Ice tanker threads, and you got me started on the -DMG path. But I think it's worth clarifying for anyone reading that might not have realized just how effective -DMG is.

I think Interface: Reactive is a much better way to get more damage than adding Musculature or Judgement.

You're right. I swear I did know that, I just forgot it in the discussion.

But activating IOs in your build that way seems wrong, because as a general rule those things become part of the character not easy to swap or remove, explicitly by design. And while I have no problem unlocking access to the incarnate trials on a time-limited basis, I'm much more conflicted about turning off what you earn in those trials once you earn them. If it was me, I would probably say you can unlock the trials for a month for a fee, but if you earn an Incarnate power during that month its yours to keep forever. I recognize that can be a gameable policy so its not clear cut, but that's probably where I would fall. As a general principle, I would say that things the players earn in-game through actual gameplay should be permanently usable in *most* cases. There are obvious exceptions for sanity sake. If the reward for running mission X is that it unlocks mission Y, but both X and Y are part of mission content in an unlockable part of the game, then obviously if you temporarily unlock that part of the game when it runs out you might be unable to do Y even after doing X. But progressional rewards in general seem more important to treat as "if the player earns them, they get to keep them" things.
Are things like Incarnate and IO's unlocked per account or per character? I haven't looked closely enough.

If they're set up per account I'd change that. I'd set it up so there would be a higher fee, but the Incarnate or IO feature would only be unlocked per character. But permanently on a character.

I don't like the overwhelming Ice graphics so I color them all dark to make them as subtle as possible. Then I use suppressclosefx to turn them off altogether (for my screen anyway).

There really should be low/no FX options for sets like Ice and Stone.

I haven't gotten around to making the second but I'm currently using Reactive on my Icer.
That's what I did. Reactive for soloing and Paralytic for grouping/tanking. It works very well.

That's what I thought. That works out fine, I haven't leveled a scrapper in years and it'll be with two sets I've never played: shield and street justice. Sounds like a good plan. Now I just need to come up with an angle.

I went through the shields to see if any of them struck a concept in my mind, but nothing has hit me thus far.

Dual aggro auras, a really useful tier 9, and complete immunity to slows are pretty nice to have as well.

It's not the strongest tank out there, but I've found my ice tank to be solid. Had some trouble with Arachnos psi bosses in the thirties, but even they're relatively easy to deal with now at level 45.

    Mine's an Ice/Kin/Soul. It's good fun.
I don't think the aggro auras stack. I think I read that in Dechs tanking guide maybe?

I'm Ice/Axe. I've done just fine in all situations, and if I want aggro there's really no one that can stop me from getting it. I don't know that I would recommend Axe though, it's pretty mediocre. Not bad, but on the low side of the secondary effectiveness scale.

I do think Ice should get more DDR, but it'll never happen. I don't need it though.

That's what I was thinking too. I wish the animations with Shield showed in the character creator. Still deciding on Brute vs Scrapper and looking for a concept. My beta SJ/Shield was just the classic Steampunk chick with a round shield with the Gothic design. I'd rather come up with something different though. It's not like I don't have time.

I'm thinking if I do Shield it would be better to go Scrapper. Is that the case?

I really like SJ. It's very cool, and I think it will get better the closer it gets to release.

It's being processed. I just did a quick-ee and don't feel like doing a full tutorial do to being only level 8.

EDIT: Also, check back shortly while it processes. Be patient. EDIT2: Voila, video is up and in HD!
Is there a low/no effects option for these animations? I don't want bright or dark flashes, I just want to hit things.

I was up there early this morning, at least three hours before it was scheduled to start, and I'm pretty sure double XP was up and cooking. I just look at my Patrol XP and if it's not getting used up then double XP must be in play.
  16. I think it's already started. I was just in and doing missions and my Patrol XP wasn't going down.
  17. I'm wondering if TW is going to make selections like Axe or Mace essentially obsolete. I know in my case I have an Ice/Axe tanker that is my main and despite loving the character I am still thinking of rebuilding as Titan Weapons simply because Axe is so solidly on the low end of mediocre. If TW comes out and is more effective and looks better (Axe shares animations with at least two other sets) I'll be rebuilding, and I think Axe will be a powerset taken only rarely.

It'd be interesting to see if there are any other Titan Weapon powers in the game, but I guess this one was just a lucky find and until we know power names any others will be lucky finds as well.

Question tho.... How can you have a 15 foot pbaoe attack, but only hit 5 targets? O_o
Welcome to Axeville, where a 180 degree cone can be limited to 5 targets. And the same attack in Mace can hit 10.

The OTHER changes are nice though.
This doesn't preclude improving Noxious. They can take away the varying effectiveness based on pet tier, that would open up Poison to more Primaries. They could lower the recharge, or even make Noxious a toggle. Both would be legit and non-overpowering changes.

I'm not a fan of the eight foot splash at 50%. Why is it OK for Dark to have Tar Patch and Darkest Night at full strength on large numbers of foes, but Envenom and Weaken can't be similar? It's not like Poison's numbers are that much more powerful than Dark's.

EDIT: Just asked Synapse about changing Noxious in any of the above ways and he said there's no changes coming for Noxious. Unfortunate. They can make all the changes they want to the earlier powers, until Noxious changes Poison will always be a sub-par selection for MM's.
  19. Issue 21 hits open beta today I think. My DSL is down, so I can't play right now (just hoping it'll be back for the weekend). I'm hoping some people will go up there and do some testing with Poison.
  20. I've got an Ice/Axe tanker, my main, that I'll consider moving to Titan Weapons when they come out. It'll be painful to rebuild her, but Axe is so solidly mediocre that if TW looks better and plays better I'll do it.

Can anyone think of some good Ice themed weapons? Obviously I'd do an Axe, that's what she's had forever, but would there be any other good things for an Inuit goddess? A pick maybe? Oooooo, maybe a giant bone sword/axe, like a jawbone or something! Anyone know of any pics of something like that?

Who really 'clicks' with you? Who looks the coolest/most intriguing/scariest, etc? Which costumes are the best fit for the particular character's story? Feel free to look at GMs, AVs, and even enemy group bosses while you're at it, but I'm curious which NPC costumes really capture your attention and why.

Not really looking for player costume requests in this thread (please put those in All Things Art); rather, I'd like to know which characters make the game come alive for you visually.

Ghost Widow is by far the best overall. She's the character I can most easily see in a comic book. Costume, name, story, it all works for me.

Second on the list for me is Mirror Spirit. She's just wasted in Faultline. Excellent look, totally unique, great name. She'd be first on my list on the hero side.

I like Tunnel Rat too, she's a good supporting character. Scirocco always had a good look to me.
  22. I'd sure love to get one of those codes, but I'm not on Facebook. How about throwing stuff on Google+? I'm on there and follow WW, Posi, SM, and Zwill.
  23. I thought Felicia Day was better this week than last. She didn't drop seamlessly into the Eureka cast like the new guy on Warehouse did but she's getting there. I find myself liking Warehouse more than Eureka pretty consistently and this week was no exception.

Loved Stan Lee, that was excellent. I thought the bonus artifacts in the Warehouse were fun (Nixon's shoes!), Pete had some great lines, and evil Wil Wheaton was good too (I heard there's going to be a love triangle on Eureka).

I thought the preview for next week's Eureka was funny, where Carter is jubilant because someone committed a normal crime like robbing a bank! Alas, it's not a normal bank robbery though...

If I'm leader, I shoot for recruiting the minimum league size; I'll recruit above the minimum size if there are people (who haven't earned a 1-star rating from me) still looking to join a trial, but will queue to start as soon as I can.
    * Individual players make more of a difference on small leagues. You can't AFK by the door for half the trial on an 8 player Lambda. Well, you can, but people will notice. On the downside, you need better players (on the average) to succeed with a small league. But I like playing with good players, so this isn't totally a bad thing.
    * Less lag.

Regarding leadership issues, if I'm leader, I try to issue instructions for every phase of the trial, so that there's always something that people should be doing, even if I know that 90% of the members of the league are veterans of the trial. Some leaders have a different strategy than others, so it helps to be clear on what we're doing, and if someone is relatively new, it helps them out too. When I'm not leader, I try to follow the instructions given by the leader (if any), unless they are conspicuously foolish.

    Just my 2 inf.
Excellent post, I agree with all of that. I've done plenty of BAF and Lambda but I still like it and pay attention when the leader gives direction.

I haven't lead any trials, but I've been thinking about doing so.
