Video Card recommendations?

Howdy!

My ATI card done blowed up. Green spots all over even the BIOS screen and nothing comprehensible is visible in Windows. This was a progressive thing, I started having trouble a couple weeks ago, first noticed in CoH.

Does anyone have any video card recommendations? I'm thinking under 200$. I want to run CoH of course, but also a couple other NCSoft games, one released and its sequel on the horizon.

How do I tell what version of PCI-E my MB supports?

Here's a thread with info on my machine. Both the CoH Helper and Hijakthis. I can't boot to run anything right now.

Thanks for any thoughts!

Judging by your specs, it should certainly be a PCIE 2.0 slot. Your former card is a Radeon 4850. So that should be your starting point for a replacement. Upgrade-wise, a 5770 or 6770 would be a low level upgrade. Above that would be most anything in the 58xx or 68xx range. I personally use a 5850 and it runs the game maxed out very well. If you want to go Nvidia instead of staying AMD, something in a GTX 4xx or GTX 5xx would be your best bets. Whatever you get, make sure it's compatible with your power supply and will fit in the case. So do your research before you buy.

It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.

Tom's Hardware Graphics Hierarchy

If you are wanting to upgrade, your starting point should be a 5850 or 6870, for the ATI brand. Using that chart, you should start looking at cards a minimum of 3 tiers higher than your present card (going by Back Blast's id of a 4850). Anything lower than 3 tiers is comparable in performance, but maybe not in price.

It looks to me like my power supply only has one power output for video. The old card was using one anyway, and I don't see any similar plugs. How does that limit what I can get? How do I tell how many power ports a card has, and where's a good spot to see their sizes?

Thanks tons, I really appreciate your help. I had seen the Tom's link in a different thread too and I've been looking at their recommendations.

If you want to go nVidia, go for the non-TI GTX 560.

If you wan to go AMD/ATI, go for the Radeon 6870.

Either one of these should be a nice swift kick in the pants for your graphics.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Here's a nice looking card and for a good price too. Looks like it needs one power supply, is that right? That card is thicker and longer than the card I had though, I need to measure the case.

EDIT: Was apparently communicating psychically with Hyperstrike.

Card description will normally say what sort of power connector(s) it needs. PCIE power comes in 6 and 8-pin varieties and cards typically need one or two connectors. Requirements vary by make and model. In addition to the right connector(s), you also need the right amount of wattage in your power supply. The more top tier the card, the hungrier it tends to be. So you'll need to have a look at your PSU and see what it's capabilities are. The bad news there is that name-brand computers almost always have minimalist PSUs, just enough juice to run the system on it's built spec with little room for upgrade. So for a card like what Hyperstrike suggests, I'd bet you need a new PSU to match.

I think I got lucky when it came to PSUs. On my now defunct Dell Dimension 8400, I had the stock PSU. Was able to stick in a Radeon 5750 in there and it worked just fine. For frame of reference, I got that box in 2004. Would I have been able to get any better of a card in there? Dunno, but for a stock PSU, it was fairly good. Naturally, I may have just gotten lucky on it.

Either one of these would be good.

Personally, I would lean towards nvidia with some of the ATI driver issues we have been seeing with CoX.

If $200 is not a hard cap, I might suggest moving up to the 560 Ti.

Edit: 560 Ti is $205 on newegg.

H: Blaster 50, Defender 50, Tank 50, Scrapper 50, Controller 50, PB 50, WS 50
V: Brute 50, Corruptor 50, MM 50, Dominator 50, Stalker 50, AW 50, AS 50
Top 4: Controller, Brute, Scrapper, Corruptor
Bottom 4: (Peacebringer) way below everything else, Mastermind, Dominator, Blaster
CoH in WQHD

I'd tend to discount drivers as a reason to pick a particular card. Price and performance are better qualifiers. Nvidia has had it's share of bugged drivers in the past and will again I'm sure. And there is some suggestion that the 11.7 drivers, which should drop soon, fix the issue.

It seems like I've had less trouble in the past with Nvida, but that's just a "seems like".

I'm going to get something early next week to at least carry me over. One of my SG had an extra card he's mailing to me. Nvidia something, not sure what.
