Maybe you should sign up for a spot at Paragon Studios. You obviously know they're half assing (whatever that means in this context). You could prevent them! Save us!

You don't even have the slightest clue whether or not they're "half assing" it. You don't even have the slightest idea of how much work has and will be put in Going Rogue. Stop basing your argument on assumptions.

Seriously, where is this notion that if the movie didn't show it, it won't be in the expansion coming from? We don't know almost anything, how do we know what WON'T be in it with such certainty?
Welcome to Earth. We have pie, popcorn, and whiners.

Since Issue 13 or so (when CO made its first appearances...coincidence?), there has been a group of CoH players that decided they're tired of CoH for various reasons.

In their minds, they KNEW that the only reason they're leaving CoH is that they're bored and they want new shiny. Perfectly acceptable. However, it appears that members of this group thought that the 'shiny theory' is a shallow reason to leave CoH by their own standards.

So in order to make it not seem shallow, they started flocking to the forums and began posting ridiculous threads, trying to justify why they're leaving CoH. They tried so hard to blame everything on the player base and developers.

Over the next several months, these people started attracting a crowd. Today, we know this crowd as "The Doomsayers". It's a sort of a trend now. Everytime a new feature is announced or implemented, these Doomsays see it as yet another nail in CoH's coffin and feel the urge to "spread the truth", as if they are a group of priests who are trying to warn civilization of an apocalypse.

Over time, the population of the Doomsayers has been decreasing. Most of them have gotten over their complex and left CoH. The few that remain are still trying to find a "justifiable" (only in their head) reason to leave CoH. And unless they are somehow justified, they just can't. I don't get the logic behind this.

People who are constantly whining about Going Rogue are merely people who are seeking a reason to leave CoH for that other superhero MMO. They just can't really find a reason that is not based on opinion. And that is why we have so many 'doom threads'.

    I am bored.

Edit: Also, to those people who think CoH is a professional software that should focus on functionality more than visual experience, I need to remind them that City of Heroes is a game. And while studying for my Game Design course, I stumbled upon a very nice quote:

    "A game is just a real-time database with a pretty front-end"

So please, stop pretending CoH would be better if it had all the points in your wishlist and was played through Notepad.

Now that someone mentioned it, I -am- a little disappointed we're not getting new travel powers.

I know, I'll go start a thread about it and cry doom!

I kindda love how people are thinking the entire CoH: GR feature list is limited to:

    2 New Powersets
    Praetoria
    Side Switching
    Graphics Upgrade

If that was the case, CoH: GR would've been already in closed beta right about now since we saw ALL those features on Hero Con videos, and they were functioning pretty smoothly.

And this is exactly why game developers are so hesitant in giving us pre-development information. Cause there are always idiots who rely on speculations as fact and try to skew what little information they have in order to justify their own stance towards something.

No matter what the developers do, there is always at least one person who is whining about it.

  9. I'm trying to use the /windowscale command to create a new chat window, with a tab inside it called 'Combat'. I then wanna put this window on a corner of my screen. But I don't want to be too obtrusive.

So, I want to decrease its scale compared to my regular chat window so that it could have a smaller font.

After looking up ParagonWiki, I'm only assuming the way to do this is:

    /windowscale chat1 0.7

...but it doesn't do anything! I can the same command on any other window and it works! For instance 'chat0' and 'chat'. But It doesn't work on chat1, chat2, chat3, or chat 4 (and yes, these are all seperated from the main chat window).

    What am I doing wrong?!

  11. You know, it's really amusing.

Every once in a while, we get a thread like this. The thread is usually a question about RP, or some new player asking about guidelines for RP, or just asking about Virtue in general.

And almost in every single one of these threads, the topic usually gets steered towards MRP, ERP, and catgirls, and similar sub-genres.

What's more amusing, is that this topic usually turns into a bunch of people bashing MRP/ERP/whateverRP and then 'lol'ing at people with social insecurities.

Then there comes a bunch of people who try to explain, justify, and "defend" ERP. And by "defend" I mean they take the "to each their own" stance.

Now what is REALLY amusing and ironic, is that the same people who steer the thread towards ERP, MRP, and their derivative, are the same people who are "bashing" it, for the lack of a better term.

I guess what I'm trying to point out is...are we, as a society, really that insecure about sexuality and eroticism? And if we -are-, then why do we actively seek out to 'bring it up' just for the sake of expressing that it's "unholy"?

It's like that homophobic person who actively talks about homosexuality solely for the sake of proving that they're not a homosexual. Isn't this what people did back in...high school?

    Anyways...

    Regarding the original post:

    1. I honestly can't say for sure that Virtue is MOSTLY dedicated to roleplayers. I've seen a fair share of non-roleplayers who have loads of fun here. But yes, we do RP. And we do love it.

    2. I can't say it's FULL of elitist cliques, either. But yes, there are cliques, and there are elitist cliques; just like in every society. You just have to find your own cup of tea.

Personally, I think the best way to see if Virtue is right for you, is to just take a dive. Try it out for yourself. Every opinion you get from this thread is just that: Opinion. And opinions tend to be biased.
  12. It's just that if it's too often and repetitive, it'd break the immersion more than enhancing it.

When I do things like that, I bind it to a power that has a cool down period of AT LEAST 5 minutes, if it's only a single line with no alternatives.

The more variety I have (using bind files), the more often I let myself use it!

Either in combat or even out of combat when your brain is working overtime trying to work out what YOUR character would do or what the others in your rp group are going to do, sometimes a mispelled word here or there is gonna happen AND backtracking to retype it correctly can break the flow of the RP. As long as the idea gets across with a minimum of signal noise "spelling and text" and and doesn't bother the flow of the RP I'm usually good with it.

On the other hand, if after Rping with a bad speller leaves me with a headache for trying to figure out what they were saying, I might not be soo excited to do so again. :P
Well yah, a few typos and misspelled here and there (especially if you're someone who RPs in combat teams. I even don't mind 'txt' speak in combat teams) are nothing to cause a headache. I agree with you.

"My God!" said the queen, "I'm pregnant! I wonder who the father is?"

Any of those works, just depends on the character and their attitudes, A flippant one might use the <dun Dun DUUUUN> or a more serious one would not.

Funny enough, when roleplaying with others I stopped worrying if they were doing it right or wrong, cause the moment Ii began thinking the other person didn't know what they were doing, I would find out they were already three steps ahead of me, and I was too slow to figure out what was going on.

Now not in all cases, but what appears as leet speak might just be an individual from an alternate earth where humans and machines have merged and are almost interchangeable and speech has become onelongdatastring.punctuatedbyl33tjargon.IMHO.KTHX BYE which became a shorthand way of idea exchange for humans who were trying to communicate ideas very fast. :P
This is true. And I always believe that there is no right or wrong way of roleplaying. There is, however, a right or wrong in communicating in English. And when I'm roleplaying with someone (and part of roleplaying is communicating in English) and it gets to the point that it breaks my immersion of the scene, or it makes it hard for me to understand what the person is expressing, my roleplaying experience starts going down.

Einstein failed English, yet we know him as a brilliant mind. It just goes to show, you can be intellectual and yet still have faults that would label you as "improper" within a society.
Stryph, I don't think anyone here is criticizing people who literally cannot spell or write for various reason. We're saying that if a person is CAPABLE of writing properly, in the widely accepted format of English writing, and has the KNOWLEDGE to do so, and yet they STILL insist on using 'txt' speak, or they refuse to improve their spelling in a social environment to make it easier for everyone else to understand them, then they ARE being "improper", and they ARE having faults, as far as I am concerned. Because I have no other way of respecting the person than the view point I can see them through. And this view point just happens to be internet and roleplaying, and both rely HEAVILY on written text as a medium of communication.

If someone has failed their English courses, or has no desire in writing properly, there is very little chance they would be interested in free-form, online roleplay to begin with. You know, something that REQUIRES them to constantly write.

I've said it many times. I, myself, am a terrible writer. English is not my first language, and my vocabulary is severely limited. But I tried really really hard, and still am, to improve my writing. Hell, I hated my English courses. I'm a math person! Why? Because I love roleplay! And artistic writing, to me, is simply a component of roleplaying.

I'm usually the only one on my group who seems to have bothered with it, but so far, I've received no outward complaints. Although when I group with a particular quiet set of people, I kind of feel I'm doing it too much when the chat space is filled with my character yelling out stuff in local speak... But about a quarter of the time, I find that one or two others start attempting the same in-character fighting, though I can tell that a lot of it isn't binded.

Just wanted to know how many of you guys would find that sort of thing annoying.
I actually had that on one of my characters. I played a giant robot who was based on Liberty Prime from Fallout 3. Except he was a commie!

He would keep spitting out these pro-communist one liners during combat. However, to make it not annoying, me and my friend sat down and came up with about 20 or so one-liners.

Then I made 20 bind files and linked them in such a way that every time I pressed a button on my keyboard, it would load a new one-liner. And I just pressed the button every 10-15 minutes on the team. It wasn't repetitive for the team, and some of them even enjoyed it!

But if it's someone saying the same thing in local over and over again every 20 seconds, then yes, I would find it annoying.

The RP environment doesn't encourage writing or spelling properly; to keep people engaged, a relatively quick response is required and does not encourage the multiple revisions needed by some to turn out grammatically great product. I don't think these mmo speaks can be used as a judge for peoples intellect. Billions of bright, articulate, well educated, folks cannot spell on the fly. Their text messages are odd, they dash of quick Emails that are horrible, I myself get ahead of my hands and think words that somehow never make it to paper. I'm incapable of editing my own work (god knows how many reviews my dissertation went through), I just don't see the errors, so I tend to cut people a break on the mechanics. Ideas though? Quality? Total snob.
    Would you prefer:

    Or:

    Quote:
    Jessica: "im pregnent"
    Joseph: "omg whose teh father?"
    Jessica: "u are."
    Or would you rather have:

    Quote:
Jessica fidgets a little, looking down at the floor. She didn't know how to explain it. Finally, she look up into his eyes, mumbling with teary eyes. "Joseph...I think I'm pregnant."

Joseph's eyes go wide. He couldn't believe it! He gasps a little and blinks a few times, clearly shocked. "...who is the father, Jessica?"

Jessica looks down at the floor between then again, sniffling once before mumbling in a shy, quiet voice. "...you are."
Now, don't get me wrong. I'm a terrible writer. Hell, English isn't even my first language. But personally, I'd prefer to RP with Case 3. I can tolerate and may even enjoy Case 1. But I refuse to tolerate Case 2.

However, in my experience, someone who consistantly talks/types in chatspeak is usually less mature and rarely capable of engaging in heavy and/or complex roleplay. To me, it also shows a lack of care towards the roleplay. If you cannot take the time to write a word out properly, can I expect you to take the time to think of quality ideas for the story?

When text fighting, I've never seen anyone use chatspeak to type (even with the dubious reason of lack of time to type). Mind, in the circle I play with, its kind of an unspoken rule to give the other person a chance to answer your attack. Just because I can type faster than my RP friends, doesn't mean I need to launch 10 attacks in the time it takes for them to type one.

My favorite memory was one random chatspeaking person telling me that they were "more michure" than me after a discussion on the need to type things out (this one was so illegible, it wasn't understandable). I walked away laughing from that one and moved on with my day, which probably should be the reaction if you come across someone who's RP style clashes with yours.

Edit: Edited the 3rd paragraph for making no sense...
    Exactly.

As I said before, if you have the ABILITY to write properly, if you have the KNOWLEDGE to write properly, and you still refuse to do so, then you're just being either lazy, or stupid. Or u r usin it 2 mak fun of sumting!111!!!!
  20. Yup. Your slow-down was the World Detail. That is the most intensive game setting. It's basically how far the game 'renders' for you in the game.

    Character detail isn't really significant.

And Particle Physics only starts eating on your resources when you're in big combat scenes.

Personally, I like World Detail at 100%. I find at 200% to be a little full of 'clutter', and I don't like the FPS cost.

But my personal suggestion to you, seeing you like the eye candy, is to set it to 150%. That way you'll sit around 40 FPS or so. Anything above 35 frames per second is not really noticeable to human eye anyways. So by setting it to 150% you lose minimal eye candy, but have enough FPS to handle large out-door teams!

I doesn't move to zero. Just a random number. I only notice it when it goes below 50%.

I have my default opacity at 100%, and I dim all my windows when they're inactive. When they are active, they're at 100%, because I role play and I like to have a readable text.

And thanks for the info Zombie Man. But I could've sworn it was fixed when I16 hit, and it was broken again just when the immediate patch after it hit live.

Note that Quad core CPUs are a bit of a mismatch for CoX, as it only supports 2 rendering threads. Offloading non CoX tasks to a third CPU/core generally helps but dual cores usually overclock (a lot) better, which usually give the duallies an edge.

I certainly would be nice to have a thread with benchmarks about CoX instead of relying on outside reviews, which *never* benchmark CoX.

Either a demo playback or various areas in zones would be something interesting to see how CPUs and GPUs perform and what optimizations would be best for them.
Mine's a Q9300. Not over-clocked, at 2.5 GHz. And I can run CoH and Fallout 3 both at the same time, and CoH would still have 60 FPS (even red side, in teams), and no lag on Fallout 3, along with a browser, messanger, and a bunch of other tiny apps.

For a Quad Core, CoH/CoV is not really CPU intensive.
  24. Bright Shadow

    Window Opacity

I believe this issue was 'fixed' a while. But I'm starting to experience it again.

A lot of times when I zone, my windows change opacity to something random. It's really annoying, as they turn almost transparent most of the time.

It also happens if I click "Apply Now" in the options window.

    Is anyone else experiencing this?
  25. I have 60 FPS both in CoH and CoV. I actually play red side a thousand times more often.

As for what game settings I run at, I set everything to maximum, except:

World Detail, which is at 100% default,
Character Detail, which is at 100% default,
and Particle Physics, which is at medium.

As you don't have a PhysiX card, I'd suggest you turn Physics to medium as well.

Then, as I stated previously, the first step in your troubleshooting (in my opinion) would be disabling all the 'nVidia enhancements' and settings, and letting the game take charge.

If you still have the low FPS, then one by one, tweak a setting, test the game, tweak a setting, test the game, rinse and repeat, until you can reproduce the issue again. That would tell you exactly what's wrong.
