ATICFX32.DLL Errors on launch after Loading

The following error is occuring on launch of COH. The updated runs, a loading bar appears and then after a few seconds it errors out to the following:
"City of Heroes has encountered a problem and needs to close. The crash occured in aticfx32.dll."

I am sure this is an issue with the version of the driver used. If I update to a more recent driver from ATI COH launches perfectly fine. Unfortunately this particular driver package is the latest from ASUS (I am running COH on a Asus G73HJ-A1 Laptop) and any more recent drivers from ATI make the laptop unstable in general which is a known issue which hopefully ASUS will fix at some point so I am unable to update my drivers without impacting everything else I do on my LT. So far COH is the only application which has issues with the ASUS drivers and I am wondering if there are any fixes for this.

Here is my COH Helper info. Hopefully this is something easily resolved, otherwise I'll probably have to cancel my account until ASUS produces stable updated drivers.

Well it's possible your video driver got corrupted. Also it's "old".

Sorry I'm not to verse in laptop drivers or if ATI has versions for the HD 5870 mobility. So check both Asus's and ATI site for newer drivers.

Unfortunately this is the lastest driver that ASUS has at this time. I have used various ones from ATI including the latests 10.8 package and they all work for COH, but produce crashes in general (Know issue on this laptop .

As far as these drivers being corrupt, I have done a complete clean install of the drivers a couple of times while playing around with the different ATI ones, and whenever I go back to the ASUS package.. the "official" drivers for the LT, COH wont launch.

I am not sure why COH has this issue and no other game/program that I run has a problem with these drivers. Just wondering if anyone has seen this before or can think of something other then update drivers (only because I have done that already.

I direct your attention to Catalyst mobility:

32bit: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...b_win7-32.aspx
64bit: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...b_win7-64.aspx

I also direct you to this thread: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=219502

you'll also need to run Driver-Sweeper when swapping between drivers: http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/

Un-Install the current driver through Programs and Features in the control panel, run driver-sweeper, THEN run the Catalyst Mobility installer.

Thanks for your response, however I have already indicated that I have used the latest drivers from ATI which make my Laptop unstable, this is a known issue with G73J. The links your provided are generally helpful but the advice "Do not go to your computer vendors site" is really misplaced. Vendor driver packages exist for a reason, at this time the ones thta ASUS provides for this LT are stable while various more recent ones from ATI/AMD are not on this model of laptop. The drivers are around 9 months old, which even by IT standards are not old especially on a game which has existed for almost half a decade.

If anyone knows of fixes for this version of the drivers please let me know. I would simply create a second hardware profile with the updated drivers for playing COH, unfortunately this is not an option in Windows 7 :'(

aticfx32.dll is definitely part of the drivers for your GPU.

Since you are having stability issues with the latest drivers from AMD/ATI and you would rather use the official video drivers from ASUS, my advice to you would be to let ASUS know of the issues you are having with their video drivers for you GPU. You should also make sure that they know that City of Heroes uses the OpenGL API (not DirectX) so they know which part of the drivers to look at.

hello, i just had this issue

i am in love with FSAA, and with the g73jh, and its ati card, it s a dead end...

catalyst10.8 solve this problem.

so i tried the 10.8

FSAA ok in X8 mode.. and 10sec after... BSOD

So back in FSAA X2... BSOD

no more FSAA... BSOD...

i knew the catalyst issue with g73jh, but i had to try it, i need FSAA, COH is so ugly without it... but... ATI drivers are not ok with COH

So i went back to my old drivers, the asus one... and then i had the same error message than you with COH...

I had two choices at this point... restore DVD or system restore... i tried system restore.

It worked.
