Box Edition Requires Subscription?
You always have to provide a payment method but you can cancel or null out the payment method right away. You still get your free month. The subscription doesn't get charged until you run out of time.
Doesn't help with those who are looking to use only time cards I know.

Apologies if this has been asked before, but this is a little confusing and troubling to me.
I read that the Architect edition of CoH comes with one month free game time. I made the digital purchase today and tried to apply the serial code, only to find that at the end of the transaction I needed to input my subscription plan. Unless I do so, it seems I cannot upgrade my account. It's rather annoying because if this is the case, not only do I have to purchase a time card, but the "one month free" is rather misleading. Am I doing something wrong, maybe? Thanks for any help in advance ![]() |
I believe you need to register a valid credit card, or bank/atm card, or a game card. A time card isn't a game card.
Billing to a credit card/atm can be cancelled after registering the account and you won't be charged. The free time will expire at the end of 30 days.

The Architect Edition does include 1 free month of game-time. You still need to give the payment details for the subscription plan you want to take effect AFTER that one free month is over.
Most retail-release MMO's will allow you to cancel or change the continued subscription plan within that months time. Lets say you sign up for $15 a month, then decide that you want to go for that 3 months at a time plan, most MMO's will let you convert from the base 1 month to 3 months before you are actually charged a subscription fee.
First off, thanks for the quick answers! Wasn't expecting it that fast
Second, thanks for the info, clarified a lot. I probably sounded stupid saying it was misleading, as really it's not, but it was the way I looked at the situation. Anyway, I'll choose a credit-card subscription to activate the account, cancel, and use time cards after my 30 free days are up. It should work, and if not, I'll just have to find out a way to make the credit-card option work.
Thanks again to all for the answers!
actually when I went and upgraded my second account so I could do Pre I17 inf transfers and SG invites I just used a code from GvE Ed and a timecard.
that was after the trial accounts no longer being able to join SG's
