Wait ... I thought I was in Kansas ....
A couple of observations:
I don't care what Mr Dead's resume is, he clearly has no understanding of how critical community is to the success of this or for that matter, any, MMO. He strongly implies that long time loyal customers who are central and highly visible members of the community leaving is of little concern as long as their are new people to replace them. Anyone who knows anything about business, let alone the MMO industry, knows this is pure garbage. Existing costumers are valuable because you do not have to expend additional resources to generate revenue from them. Attracting new customers is expensive and resource consuming. The general rule of thumb in business is that it takes $10 of new business to replace $1 of existing business. Long time existing costumers are even more valuable because they have proven willing to stick with your company or product and each have generated substantial revenue for you (a single 60 month vet in this game is worth a bare minimum of $750 in revenue over that time span). Long term existing costumers who are community leaders are pure gold to an MMO franchise, and are worth much more to that business than just the revenue their accounts generate. These players are pivotal in creating and building the community or sense therof, that is critical to any MMO's success. Players who feel a part of a community are more active and subscribe longer on average than those that don't.
Anyone who has followed the Justice forums for any significant length of time should regard Kat's lengthy post in this thread as a red flag in and of itself. Kat has been here since the beginning and been active both ingame and on the forums for the entire 5 years this game has been live. Yet in all that time, Kat has deliberately avoided becoming involved in heated discussions or heavily debated issues on the forums, preferring to take a positive albeit detached position on virtually all such matters. This is the longest post I've ever seen her make. I happen to agree with just about every she says in it, but even if I didn't, merely knowing her past history and posting habits would be enough to give me pause and consider her post as a red flag of the gravity of this situation.
Finally, a word to Mr Dead directly: It is true that your 15 bucks gives you exactly the same right to post here as anyone else. However your ignorance of, and obvious disrespect towards, the norms and established members of this community who were here before you has destroyed your credibility here. Having the right to speak in an online forum counts for little if no one has any respect for the poster. It is yelling gibberish in an empty stadium and is about as useful or meaningful.

You know, I was just surfing around and I happened to stumble across an interview with Craig Morrison, the Executive Producer and Game Director for Age of Conan on mmogamer.com. He has some interesting things to say about game design, that I thought I would share. He said:
"Players main disposition is to break things...I prefer to ask the designers to embrace the thought of putting their minds into the minds of a player, rather than seeing it as a challenge almost like, We must police them, we must force them to play the way that we want them to play!...I think it presumes the designer is smarter than the player...they might not play it in the way we want them to play it, or that we thought they would play it. They might look at it totally differently and I think that good designers can look at it and go, Ok, theyve reacted differently. They are not doing what I thought theyd do. Why? I think the predisposition in the industry has generally been to go, Ill stop them from doing that! Im going to draw a line here and, no they wont! Ill do everything in my power to roadblock them! And someone will find a way to do it anyway!...What I prefer to do is to ask my designers to go, WHY are they doing that? What at the fundamental level are they trying to achieve that you didnt want them to achieve?
The entire interview can be found at http://www.mmogamer.com/05/15/2009/w...os-just-be-fun
It really made me think about game design in ways I had not before. And, to MrDead, who said "People leave all the time. A few forumites isn't even a stastic." Yes you are right, but it is the quality lost, not the quantity, that people will miss. I'm sure Justice will recover in time of course, but in the short-term, there will be some loss. Hami raids, if there even are any in the near future, will be a much rougher experience. They may wonder why people do task forces when all the ones they have ever done have been 4 hour affairs for little reward. Perhaps, never knowing anything better, they may not notice the loss, and of course, in time, things will return to normal, we were all noobs once, but if you think this will have zero impact on the Justice community, of which you are obviously not interested in being a part of, you are wrong.
[ QUOTE ]
Now, anyone who's been here for longer than about 10 minutes is familiar with the people screaming that "if you do [x] people will leave!", and we all mock those claims. They're silly and hyperbolic and usually without merit. However, this is different... this isn't that... people are leaving now. They're already leaving. That effects me, even if I choose to stay.
[/ QUOTE ]
Agree with this
[ QUOTE ]
Lets start from the beginning
my position is this: I dont want people to leave. The only reason I play this game is because of the community. The more people who are here, the more fun the game is for me. I would hope most players agree with this. I am sure the Devs do also.
[/ QUOTE ]
Agree with this too.
[ QUOTE ]
The irony with all of this is that usually our Devs are fairly open about discussing their actions with us. They solicit player opinions, they hold open beta, they respond to and react to feedback that they receive. Our Devs DO care. But, because the response the Devs chose to deal with this whole issue, that being GM action, is specifically barred by forum rules from discussion, the feelings of those who are upset are being made worse.
[/ QUOTE ]
Also Bingo. Kats post speaks for a lot of folks it seems.
[ QUOTE ]
If a person you have on ignore for making an [censored] of himself makes a good point, and that point is shared through someone else, why should that bother anyone?
[/ QUOTE ]
You have an excellent point, Smoke. Sadly, it does and this is another thing thats impacting our quality of life in game as a result of the whole issue. And as Liv says, that effects me, even if the banning and thread locking dont. Which is the sole reason I kinda would like to see someone from Paragon Studios speak to the issue. Just to get everyone to calm down. (whether that works
) or say yes we know what happened and it didnt go the way we planned. Because this is seeping into all areas of the game, and impacts even someone like me, one of the most consistently absentee players around.
[ QUOTE ]
There needs to be a dialogue... a real one, where Mr. Millar heaves his considerable bulk off his pedestal and comes down to actually talk to us.
[/ QUOTE ]
As a woman of considerable bulk, Im saying, you shouldnt have gone there. But you know that
I appreciate some of the insight I am getting here in this thread. I am glad that most people can now talk about it a little calmer.
I was also pretty touched by Sasss thread. I met Scimi in COH, its how we keep in touch with me in Sac and him in Louisville. This has shook us both badly to see people we care about leaving. Thats why an issue that otherwise might have been more ignorable to me is causing me to also say more than I have in the past two years.
In closing I agree with Kaiser too, and I have tried to say something similar in other threads. Community is why I am in COH and not on a PS3 by myself. My RL friends got me in, I met wonderful people since, and theres no way I am emotionally prepared for how it feels when they start to leave.
Just my thoughts.

I'll agree with everything Kat has said, and not just because I'm hiding in her closet.
I'm not going to quote Peep's post, because it fairly well sums it up for me. This game, this server really, is how I connect with a great many of the people I care about and respect. The fact that so many are leaving is distressing; the reasons behind it are understandable and disturbing. The situation with MA didn't impact me directly; because of the poor CS and well...fallout management, it's impacting me a great deal indirectly.

You all that are being snarky do realize that a very large part of the force that drives Justice has unsubbed? Pvp people... raid leaders... you name it ..... all gone. Those people and their friends fuel alot of what goes on daily.
What I typed above is removed from the "human" aspect.Doesnt take into account the close friends and subgroups disrupted by Tyrant...... oops Positron.
So while some that stay will mourn the loss of good friends.. who's gonna step up and lead the community on its( to be expected multi weekly hamis and pug itf's that last 45 mins)new path?
Sorry for being Dolly Doom but had to point that out to the jackasses that have posted in response to a very well written Op with a great point.
I was never worked up over any of it. Frankly, I can't get past "its a game" and none of it matters. none. of. it. not really. There is no justification or point or anything that substantiated any of the noise. But I respected the right of the noise to be made.
But now, sadly, I am firmly right here.

Holy crap I was late...and it took me abour half an hour to read this all.
Nice to see some of my old friends posting again.....and Kat...and Sass.....[censored] must have really hit the fan.
I missed most of the incident being discussed, but I heard about it. You dont need my opinion. What i DO want to say is to all of you "its just a game" ers.
This may be, in exact definition, just a game, But thfis GAME has been a small to large part of some of our lives going on 5 years. I dont care that some of the people I know in game are only known digitally; I'm more comfortable discussing life situations with them than some of my rl friends. Ive talked to some of them MORE than real life friends. Im sure most of you have too.
So before we "just a game", "there will be more to replace them", "a few forumites arent even a statistic" Have a thought about the people you've met, the fun you've had, the chatlogs you've saved and the vent/ts conversations you wished you would have recorded.
I hate to see you go, but I salute you Justices. You made this game a great, informative and memorable experience for me over the last 51 months.

So I know that I'm late to the party here, but I still wanted to say that I'm sorry to see you(s) leave, you were pillars of the community, and irreplacable in my eyes.
Thankyou for all you have done for us, especially you Merm for the many Fabulous Hami raids that couldn't have happened without you.
Pretty much everything that could be said on this issue, has been said, but just because you were not directly affected does not mean you were not affected. And the game, and Justice especially, is a poorer place today than it was yesterday.
