  1. I'd be willing to remove it from the bad list but one user saying its good isn't a big enough sample. I recall others trying 11.10 and having issues. Was that with 64 bit windows 7 or Vista?

Anyone else have good reports on 11.10?

Maybe I'll try 11.10 and see what happens, the worst that can happen is the game crashes.
  2. Thanks for updating us on your status
  3. With all of the issues with AMD/ATI drivers I thought it would be nice to list which drivers are good and which ones are bad.
Most of the issues were hitting people with 64 bit windows OS.

I have the following cards to test with 4650, 5750, 5770 and 6870

    Good
    10.6 (5xxx)
    10.8 (5xxx)
    10.9 (5xxx)
    11.2 (5xxx, 6xxx)
    11.3 (5xxx, 6xxx) <---recommended
    11.4 (5xxx, 6xxx)
    11.9 (5xxx, 6xxx) <---recommended
11.10 (5xxx, 6xxx) (people report issues with crossfire)
12.1 (5xxx, 6xxx) (good but some reports of crossfire not working) <--- works good
12.4 (5xxx, 6xxxx, 7xxx) been working fine, crossfire still an issue.

    Bad
    10.10
    10.11
    11.1
    11.5
    11.6
    11.7
    11.8
11.11 (reports have been mostly bad need confirmation that its truly 11.11 and not an update or preview)

    Unconfirmed
    10.7 (it should be good)
11.11a (mixed reviews, need more testing)
    11.11b (no data)
    11.11c (no data)
11.12 (mixed reviews, some have said it works fine, others say it crashes)
12.2 (works, but some claims of issues with multi-instances)
12.3 (serveral complaints that this one isn't good, I used this driver and I had no crashes. adds support for 7xxx)
    12.5 There is no 12.5
12.6 Its out, I'm going to test it

I'll update the list and add more based on feedback. Please help fellow AMD/ATI owners.

I am hearing that 4xxx models will soon be going onto "Leagacy" support.

Taken from Je_saist's Ultra mode posts - I added new cards as it appears he is no longer making posts.

For the AMD architecture then, cards that will run Ultra Mode Graphics Options include:
    • RadeonHD 4730**
    • RadeonHD 4770***
    • RadeonHD 4850
    • RadeonHD 4850x2#
    • RadeonHD 4860
    • RadeonHD 4870
    • RadeonHD 4870x2#
    • RadeonHD 4890
    • RadeonHD 5750
    • RadeonHD 5770
    • RadeonHD 5830
    • RadeonHD 5850
    • RadeonHD 5870
    • RadeonHD 5970#
    • RadeonHD 6750****
    • RadeonHD 6770****
    • RadeonHD 6790
    • RadeonHD 6850
    • RadeonHD 6870
    • RadeonHD 6950
    • RadeonHD 6970
    • RadeonHD 6990#
    • RadeonHD 7970
    • RadeonHD 7950
    • RadeonHD 7770
    • RadeonHD 7750
    • RadeonHD 7870
    • RadeonHD 7850
**I've never actually seen a 4730 for sale. On paper it has the shader and texture power to execute the OpenGL 3.0 calls in the 1280*720 resolution range.

***As far as I am aware the 4770 was only sold with a 512mb memory configuration. The card also had a 128-bit memory bus. While it's not far off from the 4850 in terms of theoretical power, the memory configuration places this cards target resolution more for 1280*720
    ****rebadged 5750/5770
#Crossfire is not yet supported for OpenGL 3.x or higher rendering targets.

Seems like the patch notes are always only related to fixing the latest Crossfire retardation with some game.
Well I generally go by the rule of "if its not broke...."

11.9 should be safe, when AMD made changes for other games in 11.10 and 11.11 well it broke the fixes they made for CoX in 11.9

I talked with serveral of the devs about that during the Pummit. (and Texas Justice too) Basically, we need a "safe" AMD/ATI driver list for CoH
  5. I know redlynne was talking with the devs about Peacebringers. It was suggested to Arbiter Hawk to come to the Kheldian forums to talk with us.
  6. The Pummit was lots of fun got to meet lots of players and devs.
  7. It was fun all, good food! OPH was great, I loved the 15 foot cell phone call from Turg.

Edit: Sorry I couldn't meet you all at Holders on Sunday, I was a bit too drained from the long saturday. Thanks to Red for the ride for the fred's steak, it was really good.
  8. Well swapping cards would most certainly answer the software vs hardware question. So let us know how it turns out.

    2. the most recent times i had logged in at a door mission and went inside, cast ice patch and then burn. but generally its about 5 minutes after i start up, it has happened when i got invited to a team, while i was moving around, while i was standing, and on all sorts of characters.
    3. yes, i use evga precision to keep the fan at around 70(rpm?) while running anything graphically intensive. in my experience with this particular card, that keeps its temp at mid 70c. I have come to the conclusion that if it is going to overheat, it will do it no matter what the fan is at, but if it isn't going to overheat, the fan can be at baseline speed with no issues. I'm just kind of hoping to break the fan or something, so i can definitely rma it. we dust our rigs including the fans on cards and whatnot monthly, and last time it did it i applied arctic silver thermal paste on it, but i haven't noticed a difference, other than idle temps sit at 35c which is nice, i guess.
    4. i have this case http://store.antec.com/Product/enclo...5-15260-0.aspx. i don't have a card fan, but i am not sure that would really matter, since sometimes it sits at 75c with COH running in ultra, and just minutes before i would've had to reboot it since the temp shot up to 100c after 5 minutes of being in game. I know the heat is my card - I've run eurosoft on everything in my rig, and ive documented the same behavior in many other 3d applications.

i did find a quick and dirty work around. every other reboot it would get a wild hair up its *** and overheat, so i stopped rebooting and just put it on standby when it was behaving. this fixed the problem! I am hesitant to RMA it since I am not sure they will see it malfunction. our last step is going to be swapping my hubby's card with mine, since we have identical cards, just mine was bought more recently than his. if it overheats in his, we can rma it and hope EVGA doesn't give me a stinky replacement.

but yeah back on topic, its been crashing in coh and it definitely isn't a heating issue for me, for once
  9. I was there too, I saw Redlynne there talking with the devs.

I did speak to the devs about pvp and stalkers (and yes Peacebringers) sounds like they got some real powergamers working on Stalkers for us.
  10. Yes, pigs are flying and hell has indeed frozen over.

Talked to a couple of devs during the Pummit about stalkers and they are working on improvements to stalkers! Oh I so can't wait, now I just have to figure out what new stalker I am going to create.

They stated there would be a thing in place to prevent duplicates.
Yes, it would be a good idea...but I can see why they have issues, but I'll be the second MM to have them (after yours!)

Nice meeting you at the Pummit.
  12. I don't pvp much either, yet 1/2 my time talking with devs was ironically about pvp, mainly because I have friends who pvp. I get dragged into pvp so they can "test" their build.

Oh yeah, nice seeing you at the Pummit Turg!

PVP is a hotbed of a topic (as this thread demonstrates). What I did was not just ask a question of "what about PVP", but rather "here's a PVP mechanic that could not only work, but introduce the idea painlessly to the average player". A claim like that takes, I'll say, maybe two minutes of explaining.

I'll be honest: I'm not a PVPer in any light. My investment in the idea was from the perspective of fleshing out the game as a whole, rather than make things better for a particular faction of players. I speak clearly - to the point to where people in my office think I'm being a jerk, but honestly, I just had vocal training, so that's what I do. There was no anger in my presentation. Maybe a little excitement. Forgive me if I geeked out. XD

FYI, I have tried delivering this concept before on the forums back about 2 years ago with no redname response, but since I had a captive audience with the Devs, I figured "What the heck, the least that could happen is they look blankly at you and go 'lolpvp'". They didn't, and with the audience reaction to the idea of evolving the PVP mechanic, a lot of people who don't PVP seemed willing to try. My first post was primarily to fluff out what Xanatos and others asked in way of detail, but I wanted to express my response to the "lol" section.

Thanks for the apology, VK. I'll let it be known when the Flowbie video of Positron's haircut is on Youtube.
  13. Several questions,

    1. Have you tried rolling back video drivers to an earlier version.
    2. What are you doing in CoH when the crashes occur?
    3. If your video card is running hot, have you tried using manual GPU fan settings to make the fan run at higher settings?
    4. Does your case have places to add more case fans?

Somewhat off topic, but did you register the card with EVGA? It has a lifetime warranty if you did, its possible that the card is having issues and may require an RMA.
  14. Which video driver version are you running? 11.9 is considered the only recent driver to be stable with the game. Several of us are on older 11.3 (or 11.2 or 11.4) drivers after dismal results on 11.5, 11.6, 11.7, 11.8 oh yeah and 11.1, 10.10, 10.11 and 10.12 etc....

    Are you running 11.9 beta?

If you are running 11.5 or later, it will auto update your video drivers to possibly an unstable newer version.

/this. There were lots of issues with graphics drivers crashing the game, so its helpful to see what people are running.

When I see posts from someone saying, "the game crashed please help!" my thought is, "Well tell me more so I CAN help silly!" Sorry, I can't mind read what you have.

So, until I see more info, I'll just keep playing on my stable system...

(suspects the auto update ATI catalyst drivers post 11.5 are the culprit but who knows, need more info for diagnosis)
  16. The only new one that seems to be stable is 11.9

Otherwise, you're in my boat sticking with 11.3 Seems like CoX get broken everytime they make changes
  17. Going with Windows 7 "retail" can be used in the current and next system but it won't make much of a performance gain.

Heck, looking at things, I would say buy 2x4gb 1333 DDR3 (8gb) 1.5V ram now while its really cheap. Never know when the next disaster will hit and make comptuer prices go bonkers (see Thailand and Hard Drive prices)

I don't like the idea of hoarding computer parts, so I don't really see much in the way of low hanging fruit for you Bionic. While its certainly possible to get a CPU + MB + RAM for $200, it would not yield enough gains to be worth it.

So not in any order with a $200 budget.

    1. Windows 7 "retail"
    2. New Video card
    3. Buy cheap DDR3 ram for the CPU+MB upgrade later.
    4. SSD hard drive, but you probably want Windows 7 first.

My concern is making sure what he buys today can be used in a future system. That pretty much eliminates more DDR2 ram or a Socket 775 CPU upgrade.

Otherwise it's a full CPU/RAM/MB transplant and that just kicks the cost way up.
  18. With the next gen 28nm video cards coming soon, a 460 1GB would be a reasonable choice (esp if someone is buying 3)...Of course, its not the best choice. Note, I already said MB + CPU + RAM.

TLR get a new CPU + MB + RAM.

Hyper, the video card "upgrade" would be a fairly horizontal one, it won't improve zoning times, lag etc...It will increase fps somewhat, but as I said, it not really a good choice. It would yield better results than buying more DDR2 ram for a dead end socket 775 MB + windows 7 64.

Bionic, if you don't have a microcenter, its about $100 more at newegg. For whatever reason microcenter likes selling CPUs at a loss. Newegg is considered the "standard" price for many since they do sell a wide variety of computer stuff at pretty tough to beat prices.

Essentially what is going to happen here is that you're cutting down on available system memory for things besides the OS. This may or may not impact performance in the game, but it'll definitely impact long-term stability of the client in-game.

So we're kinda 6 of one, a half dozen of the other.

Bionic, what kind of budget do you have?
Also, are you planning on overclocking?

    I know it's a pain but:

You've answered a good chunk of what's needed already. But your budget is the big one here.

Both for yourself and your kids' computers.
  19. New CPU + MB + RAM. I have no idea if you a near a microcenter, but the current deal they have going if you buy a 2500k/2600k + MB is very sweet. Its $100 less than newegg.

    Look on page 27

    http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/...ac#/33e9daac/1
  20. I agree that a video card would be a better choice over RAM/OS but probably not the choice I would do.
  21. A GTX 460 1GB might be a good choice for a "cheap" video card.
  22. Tough choice...Socket 775 is a dead end and buying more ram and upgrading OS won't yield performance gains. Those upgrades would just be a big waste of money.

A new video card would be a decent boost, but at least for CoX would be held back somewhat by the old CPU. So its an easy upgrade, but it will be a modest gain.

If you live near a Microcenter. Its possible to pickup a new 2500K + AsusP67 MB for $250. Toss in 8GB of DDR3 ram for another $50 and for $300 you would get a very nice boost in performance.
