Well, I don't have a scrapper, but the run speeds are consistent across all archtypes. I've got a stone-tanker who can manage 41mph : http://zerias.blogspot.com/2009/08/c...ank-build.html

I imagine that if you 3 slotted Sprint and Swift and maxed on available run speed IO boosts, you could probably hit 50, 55mph on sprint

If you mean without IO Boosts, at level 50, Sprint and Swift will only be adding around 7mph each to a base speed of 14mph, so you'll be in the realm of 28-30mph.

Short version is that UAC won't do a thing to actually stop the most common viral entry points. Clicking on a bad link in an email, visiting a web-page loaded with malicious java-script, or downloading a trojan-horse application. Nor would it stop more innovative attacks. Microsoft, for example, can use Windows Update to bypass UAC and install software anytime they want to as long as you have an internet connection. And no, this isn't wild theory, Microsoft has actually done this before. Microsoft has used Windows Update to force additional software onto computers even when admins had do not check for updates checked. So it's of little wonder that virus writers also had little problems getting around UAC.

In short, UAC doesn't actually do anything but annoy the user. As far as security jokes go though, it's right up there with the claims that IE is a secure browser.

    GR Advertising

The fall of player populations probably has more to do with school being back in session and other games coming out that people want to play (Uncharted 2, Ratchet and Clank Future 2, Borderlands, Left for Dead 2 just for example). The perceived drop this year is little different from last winter's perceived drop.

As to whether or not there will be a strong marketing push, that's... sort a of dumb question. NCSoft has already been buying up web-space to promote I14, I15, and I16. While I haven't seen as many CoH ads as I've seen CO ads, they've been out there.

We also know that marketing was at HeroCon keeping a lid on somethings they didn't want talked about. Ergo, if marketing didn't want Posi and company making some big reveals there, they've got big reveals planned for later.

We've also been hearing, multiple times, about the financial backing NCSoft is giving CoH. If you drop by the (old) www.plaync.com domain, which now directs to : http://us.ncsoft.com/en/ : you'll find that CoH is giving a rather hefty push on NCSoft's own websites. While nobody has outright stated it, the implication is that NCSoft is pushing CoH as hard as it's pushing AION. So, if you think about the marketing push that's been going on for AION, you'll probably see that same level of marketing for Going Rogue.

    um. no.

First things first. Nvidia's GTS / GTX cards use almost the exact same architecture as the Geforce 8800 released in 2006. http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=88&pgno=5 Now, don't get me wrong, the 8800 was an astoundingly good design when it launched, and it's produced extremely long lasting legs. However, on a feature standpoint, the line-up is rather long in the tooth.

Basically, the only reason Nvidia's still selling cards is because of inertia. People buy Nvidia cards because Nvidia used to have the best cards. They used to have the best drivers. They used to have the best price-points.

    However, that's all... used to

For the past several months Nvidia's been bleeding it's bread and butter gamer market to AMD cards. Fact is, when it came time to actually buy, most gamers found that the RadeonHD 3x00 series, RadeonHD 4x00 series, and the new RadeonHD 5x00 series offered better performance at a better price point.

Nvidia's drivers used to be the baseline standard for good, now it's the baseline standard for awful. A good case in point is their 64bit drivers. I've got a couple of Athlon64 systems, one with a Triple-SLI GTS 250 setup and another with an older factory overclocked 7900 GT. I've gotten used to applications that work in 32bit Linux, 32bit Xp, 32bit Vista, and 32bit Vista SP2 (Win7) featuring corrupted graphics, or no graphics in the 64bit versions of these OS's. On the surface this might not sound like such a big deal... till you realize that the most amount of memory a 32bit OS can use is about 4gig's... and if you hand say, 4gigs of ram to Windows 7, it will only be able to use 2.5gb. This means that in a 32bit OS, the fastest memory configuration is going to be a dual-channel 2gig configuration. Yes, that's a lot of memory, but really, if you're buying a new computer... why only 2gigs?

When I look at my Radeon cards though, going back to a Radeon 9600, I've yet to run into a graphics problem or corruption caused by the drivers across any of the 64bit OS's I've used.

There also other market practicalities to consider.

First off, Nvidia's pretty much abandoned multi-platform SLI.

If you want SLI support on AMD's Socket AM3 platform, you're pretty much stuck with buying an MSI board :

    http://www.pricewatch.com/search?q=S...n=Motherboards
Newegg Socket AM3 + SLI .. and you'd top at Triple SLI

If wanted, say, Quad-Crossfire though, an Asus is under $190 for a Socket AM3 board... and a little over / under $200 for an AsRock Intel Core I7 motherboard (that's also limited to Triple SLI.)

Motherboard support isn't the only place Nvidia plays a less than pleasant game.

Right now AMD, Apple, Intel, and other vendors are pushing game developers to use OpenCL for hardware accelerated physics: http://www.khronos.org/#tab-opencl

The only other vendor with a hardware physics solution is Nvidia, and they offer PhsyX. As gamers found out with recent Nvidia driver updates, if you aren't actually using an Nvidia card to render graphics, PhysX is turned off. Yes, right now that's only a problem for gamers using an Nvidia card for PhysX and an ATi card to render graphics. Only Intel's looking to enter the add-in board market with the mid-ranged Larrabee set next year... and that could be very interesting.

Nvidia's reputation for slimy behavior also extends to game development. Nvidia was caught pretty much paying off Rocksteady to not allow some filtering affects, such as Anti-Aliasing, on Non-Nvidia graphics cards. Again, this pretty much only affected ATi users since no current Intel GPU owner probably tried to run Batman: Arkham Asylum.

These artificial knock-downs behind the scenes only help contribute to a poor picture of Nvidia. Investors were left more than a little shaky after the Nvidia’s GPU Technology conference. Right now the Fermi card doesn't actually exist, and Nvidia reportedly could not even show the architecture working in IKOS boxes. Coupled with extremely bad relations with Original Design Manufacturers (ODM) and Original Equipment Manufactures (OEM) over the exploding laptop fiasco's...

And it's actually questionable whether or not Nvidia is going to exist as the company we know it as next year.

    ***

Now, this all does stand to change.

Right now ATi cards are the clear choice, on price, on performance, on driver support, on everything that matters.

However, it wasn't that long ago that ATi was pushing out the RadeonHD 2600 series... which was overly warm... while Nvidia was pumping out it's first of many 8800 derivatives.. which romped all over the Radeon cards.

It is very possible that another company, maybe Apple, could come in and purchase Nvidia up, and put the company back on track. It is possible that Nvidia could actually deliver a successor to Fermi that delivers on gaming and computational performance.

It is possible that AMD stumbles, that they follow-up the RadeonHD 5x00 series with a Freedom Pug. It is possible that Intel's Larrabee architecture will be more price competitive and performance competitive than initial reports suggest.

In the graphics realm, the position of each vendor can change really quickly.

Yes, AMD is the best... right now.

That doesn't mean they'll be the best in 6 months... or even 4 months.

At least you can tell the difference between games. So you got half of this little segment right. CoH is indeed not WoW. Yes. Players do have roles on teams. Yes, Players should attempt to play their roles on teams.

Yes, multiple players on this forum do not like being told that they are bad players and outright dangerous for playing like idiots. Case in point, stalkers that try to land continuous and consistent melee damage rather than stalking. Controllers that try to play in scrapper range. At some point players have to be told what they are doing is wrong... and too many players honestly believe that there is nothing that can be done in the game that is wrong.

Yes, you as the tanker will hold aggro better...seems like the Fire/Kin was doing just fine...the problem it would seem was the other teammates dying.

I would have a very different viewpoint. I'd be asking why the Fire / Kin wasn't staying with the group and passing out SB and ID. A team that is on crack and haz mez protection can plow through enemies a lot faster than a simple fire / kin leading on their own.

And no, this isn't up for debate, so don't even try it. This is established fact, get over it.

You are both right and wrong on this. Yes, in some cases, it is bad to quit a TF.

That being said, there are cases, such as the one that is described, where the only real option is to one-star everybody else, quit the TF, and promptly warn the server's badge channels not to play with that particular group of players.

You might be surprised as to how quickly players will learn to play properly when they can't get any teams at all.

    Quote:
Now personally, I've beaten the ITF many times without a tank, I don't see why your team couldn't...
Soooo? What does your personal experience have to do with this particular team? I've been on all defender STF's. I've been on an all Stalker ITF. I've been on an all controller Dr. K. I've been on several different themed groups.

And I've had the pleasure / displeasure of managing the ends of tf's that were lacking people who dropped out. Such as an ITF where the /kin dc'd.

Just because I've been on teams that can do this stuff, doesn't mean that any other team can come along. We don't know the slotting. We don't know the rest of the team make-up. We don't know what sort of buffs / debuffs they had.

So it's not really surprising to find an ITF team that relies on a tank to hold aggro.

    Quote:
That said, nothing wrong with being a damage dealer for awhile, even if you're not the highest damage dealers on the team.

Or are you one of those tanks that grabs the first attack, the AOE, and Taunt, and consider yourself done with your secondary?
So, you finally ask a question, and instead of asking about what was going on with the team, you ask about the players particular style.

I'm about to be highly offensive when I say this BrandX, but I think the original Poster has a better handle on being flexible on a team than you do.

    Quote:
If your that...not saying you are...they were better off without you...that's as bad as the Defenders who don't grab any attacks (in fact, just the other day I ran with a level 50 Empathy/Archery Defender...had Snap Shot. Didn't even have Rain of Arrows! The nuke that wouldn't hurt them at all!).
And... where you going somewhere with this little segment? Or is it just a tangent to relate how you've interacted with other players?

Responding to Golden Girl first: If you're going to buy new, and going to buy now, buy from the RadeonHD 5x00 series. Doesn't matter which one really, the 5750, 5770, 5850, and 5870 cards are powerful enough to drive 1920*1200 on just about every single game shipping : http://hardocp.com/article/2009/10/1...0_5750_review/
    http://hardocp.com/article/2009/09/3...o_card_review/
    http://hardocp.com/article/2009/09/2...o_card_review/

If you are really trying to future proof, until Nvidia can show that Fermi isn't just a pipe-dream, the HD 5x00 series is the only real option.

And don't think that the problems that currently affect ATi card users are going to affect users with the upcoming engine improvements. The demonstration at HeroCon was run on Crossfired 4870 X2's... but according to the developers, even the RadeonHD 4850 1gig can handle just about everything Ultra-Mode does and maintain a playable frame rate. http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showp...5&postcount=25

So yes, those issues have finally been fixed.

    ***

Now, onto the original post. A 6200 hasn't got a prayer. If the RadeonHD 4850 is the base point of reference for the minimum card that can handle Ultra-Mode, you'd be looking at Geforce GTX 260 or better.

While I feel certain that this is a sarcastic post with no expectation of a real answer:

Welcome to MMO Game Design Basics 101

The code base for a MMO, or any game for that matter, is exceedingly complex. What many players may view as a simple button press or click may involve hundreds of underlying sub-routines. When changes to one part of a code cause problems in another part of code that were not intended, you have Software Regressions.

Yes, NCSoft and Paragon Studios do employ a certain number of Quality Assurance Testers. Yes, these testers do attempt to find bugs and fix those bugs in-house.

However, the actual content in an MMO is, as the name implies, massive. It is quite literally physically impossible for a small Quality Assurance team to police all of the content possible in a game such as City of Heroes.

This is why MMO's have CLOSED AND OPEN BETA tests. The company depends on external users to play through the content and locate bugs, then report those bugs. While a MMO company can simulate the effect of 5,000 players on a server at once, they won't actually know how the system performs and works until they actually have 5,000 players... at once. For more background information on the point and purpose of betas in an MMO, read this article: http://saist.fateback.com/what-part-of-beta.html

In the case of recent patches to City of Heroes, the developers have been making small changes to the game, such as enabling the Halloween Event content, and then speeding up the Halloween event timers.

However, these superficial changes have created additional problems that the QA teams simply either didn't have time to look at, or simply couldn't reproduce on their limited internal systems.

It is very likely that some issues simply didn't occur to the QA team since the affected code shouldn't have been touched or modified, indicating deeper problems.

What-ever the case, patches causing problems that they weren't supposed to is a part of life for this type of game.

From what I've read so far, the above doesn't seem at all likely to happen in a real-world army, but what I want to know is is it even POSSIBLE? I know that movies misappropriate what high-ranking officers and agents mean, via authority equals asskicking, but I also realize this is fiction divorcing from fact in a big way. But can this work the other way? I've already been told that specialists like doctors get a high-ish rank, but how about a truly high one, like Colonel or Major for someone who is, for all intents and purposes, a field operative with no actual command to speak of?
I alluded to this back in my first post on the subject. During WWII the British High Command, as well as the American Armed Forces, were known to commission undercover or underground agents with the rank of Captain, Major, and in a few cases, Lieutenant Colonel / Commander / Wing Commander. The last three being of roughly equivalent rank across the Land Army, Naval Forces, and Air Forces.

I'm unaware of any cases of civilians being commissioned as Group Captain / Full Colonel as such, but it that might have been possible as well. I'm also unaware if the practice extended into the Korean and Vietnam wars, although I suspect it did.

So, to answer you're question... is it possible? Depending on the scope of the mission, yes. In the War-torn story of Paragon City, it might be entirely possible that yes, the military forces have promoted a Metahuman / Superpower to a high rank to deal with some of the super-powered forces.

However, in in-game continuity, the only significant hero-side military faction is the Vanguard, and they do use the rank of Colonel for some of their officers : http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Vanguard

Two days later my computer is still borked (<---- think I made that up) and I am considering having to do a full reinstall of the OS. Conincidence? Or, did CoH make hash out of my Windows XP box?

Group Fly, nor the Pets, are broken at the system level. However, the behavior of both is not in line with the behavior Another_Fan expects. The event is NOT a Kludge as Another_Fan calls it.

Something Another_Fan doesn't seem to realize is that Group_Fly has been around a heck of a lot longer than the ExpandAlone City of Villains. It, and the Tier 4 Teleport Power, were designed for a different style of gameplay and with different intentions, than they wound up being used for. Group Fly wasn't ever intended to be used as a Travel Power for Mastermind's, and the base power-system never really has been modified to account for the gameplay changes City of Villains brought to the game.

What Another_Fan expects is to be able to activate Group_Fly, hit the Heel Button for the Pets, and have all of them keep close proximity to him as he flys through the air. However, the travel logic of the Pets means that even if you just casually walk down the street with Heel on, the pets don't actually stay preciously with you. They also generally travel at a slower rate than you. So it's very easy to out-run, out-jump, out-fly, the pets. Part of this is down to the basic pathing of the game. As most of us realize, NPC's have next to no AI. They simply pick a path, and follow-it.

Because the radius of Group Fly is limited, it's very easy for pets to fall out of the radius of the cloud as the player flys, simply due to the limited pathing knowledge that forces the pets to avoid impacting with each other in casual travel, and the lower travel speed caps.

The result is that there's no simple Fix, as Another_Fan expects.

First, the developers would need to implement context specific recognizing capabilities in the pets. Thus the pet system would be able to recognize when the MasterMind's Group Fly had been activated.

Second, the developers would need to implement more advanced following NPC follow routines, in order to insure that all the pets moved together as one at the same speed of the owner of the power. This also means buffing or modifying the pets to have the same fly speed caps as the player.

Now, there are a couple of quick fixes that could be implemented. One option might be to implement a speed-check for players with fly. A Mastermind might be able to hit a button and only travel at 10% increments of their maximum speed. This might be possible without having to rewrite or create entirely new sections of code.

Now, I've looked into military ranks before, and I know there are about a zillion of them, with lots in-between (not that I know what any of them mean), so to narrow the question a bit, let me specify a few ranks I'm looking at. Specifically, I'm looking to understand what the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant, Major and Colonel mean, what their responsibilities and authorities are, and what someone holding these ranks would do, just as a general thing.
    Sergeant : . Non-Commissioned Officer

These are the enlisted guys. They talked to an Army Recruiter, got a job doing something in the Army, moved up through the working ranks, and have practical experience in their job field. They work for a living.

After attending Basic Training, they head onwards to AIT, or Advanced Individual Training, to begin their career paths.

    ***

Commissioned Officer: A Commissioned Officer enters the Army with some formal training, like a college degree. After passing Basic Training, they attend Officers School to learn the basics of leadership and the core tenants of being an Officer. Once they graduate they receive their Commission which basically says they are of such and such a rank.

It is possible, and non exactly uncommon in War-Time environments, for Civilians to be made Commissioned Officers for protection purposes or for practical purposes.

In the US Army, the Lieutenant Rank is the lowest rank, with First and Second Lieutenants. They've just graduated from Officers School and get stuck running the lowest amount of paperwork and acting as the direct commanders of squads and platoons.

The Major is above the Lieutenant. They've passed the rank of Captain, and have authority over a wider range of resources. Although they are of a higher rank, a Major can spend a lot of time in the field on assignment. In fiction, a Major is often used to identify an officer that's got some time in the service behind him, and is in charge of the crack team of sociopaths that are going to blow the smithereens out of something... or more often... the sole sociopath going behind enemy lines to blow the smithereens out of something.

In realistic life, most Majors are a bit boring. They often get small duty assignments or lost in the paper-work shuffling.

The Colonel is another double rank, with both Lieutenant Colonel, and the Full Bird. These guys have made a career out of being in the armed forces, and they also happen to be where the useless paper-pushers tend to float to. Effective Colonel's rise to become Generals. Ineffective Colonel's... don't.

In realistic life, you'll generall find Colonels either acting as direct gophers for Generals, or commanding larger installations.
