  2. I too think that Boomtown is a forlorn place, one to which a Dark Astoria type revamp would be nifty, indeed. And also the Shadow Shard, while we're talking about revamping zones.

And as such, since DA got redone, perhaps it is in the mix. The things you speak of for Boomtown and Perez can be said about the previous Dark Astoria and Faultline zones.

I would also hope the bridge to nowhere in Cap would finally go somewhere, and whatever that now, what, 3 years? construction project in NW Steel Canyon would get fleshed out.

/And let's get a real Moon Base. 'That place' doesn't count, it's not a base.
  3. Like I said, it was a guess on the video drivers, pending the helper upload from ya.

I see nothing in the log that looks suspicious, although it obviously doesn't think your sound drivers are all that current. Still, if it works don't mess with them.

I also see nothing else except maybe a software interaction issue, and so, per your request, here's the things I'd take out for testing:

I'm not real sure why these are in the Hosts file, as usually you wouldn't do that unless you had real issues with the particular website/domain name. However, they won't necessarily hurt anything, as long as they're absolutely correct.

Remember, you are *testing* to see if the thing will work in a basic form. KISS is what is to be employed here, *only* enough to get it working. If you then add one and it works, great. Add another, work, awesome. Add a third, boom it breaks... you've found ONE of the possibles. Test them all.

And also, combinations might cause the issue. Perhaps the Malwarebytes and the Killer Network don't like each others. Or the Steroscopic 3D from NVidia coupled with the Sidebar. Kinda like Joker Products in Batman.

Finally, no guarantees. You can have a brand new blank, only Windows, the required drivers only, and Co* setup, and something about the motherboard or video or ? hardware wise isn't going to let you run. It does happen. It could be your power supply can't handle what it once could, as it's aged a little. It could be literally anything. So you are testing to see how you can affect the machine with the software. AND... you can break something else you're doing with these, such as without the Punkbuster, some game won't run.

It sucks. I know, I've had to do it before. But you have to do it. Hope that helps ya figure it out... if it's any of these in the first place, that is. Good luck!

    Tron: Uprising

Yeah, I wanna say that somewhere in the first Tron, Flynn... or maybe it was the MCP when he's talking to Dillinger, talks about the 7th time... so 6 previous Clus to that one, and the one in the new grid is 8.

Although, really, the Clu in Legacy is Clu 1.0 for the new operating system, yeah?

I'll pull it up and watch the scenes again and report back. Later.
  5. Guide at the top will tell you how to submit a CoH Helper log, which will be of benefit here.

I can say that you have some interesting services/start ups that you can disable with msconfig. You can uncheck them in the start up and service tabs.

I'm going to go with the video drivers, though, are outdated and you probably need to upgrade them. That's where the CoH Helper log will be handy. As of now, that's just a guess.

Revolution? Heck yeah. I'm all for a non-electric world at this point. It'd teach us how arrogant we is.

///The incarnate stuff will be... interesting.

re: Enders... Yeah, disappointing if that's how Card has played this all-too-long-in-the-making movie.

It's gonna be as awesome as The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was. Which is to say... it's not really all that possible to make the book in real life. So you'll have to accept that and enjoy the movie for what it is.

At least Card's directly involved, so maybe it won't suck a metric ton, but just a portion of one.

/Will be there when it's out.

    Tron: Uprising

This is awesome. Too bad I don't have a means to watch it on the actual channel.

Re: Tron/Rinzler, and other overall plot arcs I thought of...

He said it himself: "Clu left me with scars that will never heal." (I think that's the line. It's very close.) I take it to mean this: He's slowly being 'eaten alive', if you will, by the Clu rewrite and he's destined to become Rinzler. (as has been suggested)

BUt... I think Flynn's the one keeping the Rinzler code at bay. Flynn IS THERE, remember... he never got out when Clu attacked Tron. We'll see him sometime, and probably at next season, if not the cliffhanger the end of the first.

I also think Beck is destined to be derezzed, and I imagine it will be when the ISOs are destroyed by Clu, as he'll be fighting 'the system' there, probably leading the defense. Then 'boom', and he's done. Oh, but his big thing is he's gonna save Quorra as his last heroic thing. A la Tron telling Flynn to get out.

And it's a possible that Flynn will have to come to grips about his friend, Tron, by finally admitting there's nothing else that can be done, in effect having to release Rinzler. But what will be worse is he'll have to in effect kill or lobotomize Tron, so that Flynn's whereabouts aren't known by Clu when Rinzler becomes dominant, and Clu's puppet. This part is less 'for sure' for me as a guess, but I'd think it'd be a great twist sometime in the series. Of course, that's assuming the above involvement with Tron.

My issue with this possible is this: Flynn says "Oh, Tron... what as Clu done to you?" in the 2nd movie. (Paraphrased.) This can be explained away as something like Flynn is aghast, if you will, at how far 'down' the Rinzler program has taken Tron, farther than he would have guessed.

The series endings will be maybe a 3 parter. Flynn will see Tron get turned, and see the ISOs being taken out. Beck, the last best hope, is no more... He'll have a new mouth to feed, if you will, with Quorra... His 'inward turn' begins, the series ending with a soliliquy by him, lost in his thoughts... and on the Grid.

Overall, though, I bet I'm right and it's just details of these characters from here on out. The 'end' for Beck and Tron can come at any time they want the series to end, and it'll flow right into the movie, and that pretty well.

/Oh, and Beck and the bad girl will become an item. Watch.
  14. Just to talk about the sounds... there are sounds from Quake I in here too. And perhaps some Quake II.

There are generic sounds that anyone can have, so they get propagated. Kinda like the Whilehlm Screem that gets in to just about every movie as an industry wide running gag, if it will fit the scene:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_scream

/Miss Stargate too, and Caprica. SyFy sucked when they did that, and I haven't reupped Cable because of it.
//That's right, SyFy. YOU were the only reason I had cable in the first place, and you messed it up!
///Miss the good Doctor too. Sigh.
  15. No it wouldn't. I mean, yeah, sure the car physics would be, but just make it another 'sprint' and it's all good. You could do Automan turns.

/And a Flintstone-mobile sounds like the plan... through the courtesy of hero's feet!
    //But BRB first. Definitely.
  16. The harsh bit I gotta say now... sorry...
The game is fine. It *is* the computer, and I know that's frustrating to hear, but I speak not only truth, but near-gospel. If the game itself were the problem, I, and others, would simply not be running. My computer, and yours on your other computer, run with no issues, yes? So... what's that leave? The computer itself. This has been the case since Co* started. There are *occasional* systemwide/cross computer issues with the client or servers, but invariably, the onesies like these are the comptuers themselves. Period.

    ---

Now, having said that so we're clear... I'm not tryin' to harsh ya out. It's just the facts.

Go get a PCI network card (not a USB one) and stick it in there. If that solves it, you have it figured out: the onboard network port is bad.

However, it could also be the bios on the motherboard. Your current BIOS is saying V6.00PG, which *COULD* be F6 on the list here:
    http://www.gigabyte.us/products/prod...?pid=3806#bios

And if that's the case, there's a new one, F8. Maybe you can upload that onto the motherboard and fix it.

Beyond that, perhaps a flaky motherboard. It sounds likely to me at this point.

Ask a few of us: We use Co* to KILL THINGS. It is, still, so far as I know, the baddest thing you can do to any computer. I don't know why, but it maxes CPUs, Memory, North/south bridges, network ports, and video cards. Only thing it doesn't stress is the hard drive. Well, and if you happen to have a floppy drive, that doesn't get hit at all.

You are experiencing one of those computers that it kills, sounds like.

I bet the network card fixes it. But only a small bet. I'm sorta leaning bad mobo. I've also kinda fallen off the Gigabyte bandwagon, and use only Intel at work these days. Seems to have been a really good move so far, I've had a few problems with the Gigabyte boards in recent months. Perhaps this is your issue too. That being said, I am running on an Intel Core2Duo, Gigabyte board, EVGA NVidia 9600GT, Win Vista, 4G ram, no issues whatsoever, and this Gigabyte is a good board. (so far. Now that I've bragged, watch it burn on me. Heh.)

I hope that helps. I know it's wordy. But I really do want you to feel good about the game, and place suspicion where it's warranted: the computer.

    Good luck!

CoH stresses hardware more than any other game I've played in years.

I use it to stress test computers after repairing them. I got that idea from houtex.

Also, one of the guys I work with doesn't believe in just replacing parts. He's repaired several of our video cards, power supplies and motherboards rather than just replacing them. Since much of it involved replacing capacitors, it's mostly a tedious job of desoldering the old caps and resoldering the new caps. For the video cards and motherboards he's sometimes reflowing the solder for the chips on the board as well.

Using CoH as a stress test has shown him a few flaws in his repairs before we put those parts back out on the campuses.
Wanted to say 'Good catch, TJ, I missed that!', so, uh... well, there, I just did.

Also... nifty! I influenced someone. Heh. Co* is still the worst thing for a computer to do, far as I can tell, and that's pretty cool that y'all are rebuilding video cards and using it to test. Awesomesauce.

As power supplies get used, and moreover, ones on the ragged edge like sounds like might be the case here, they lose their capabilities a bit. So what you might have been getting before, you might not be able to keep up now. It's a valid point that the 470W rating (constant, I'm sure, from PCPC, not peak, way different) is now not really able to get there. It may be that it's got 440 or 430 constant. And you're pushing it. Possibly. You did say years.

Also, I'm not in total agreement with the side not helping... indeed it can. A lot. And in the case of this dell, it may just be ok. It does, however, use a passive heat sink under that goofy green chute, with the rear fan pulling air from the underside and 'front' of the sink. The power supply fan sucks air from above that chute. There's no fan on the front, and the video card would get any passive air from the front and seams, and with the side on, it's air intake is in front of the hard drive, over the hard drive and then towards the CPU... laminar flow might just make it possible, if not likely, the airflow at the card is horrid by then (and the fan is on the other side to boot!), and the case side being off is actually more helpful than not. I would agree with not having it on, by far, given the design of this horrid case. However, having said that, the graphics card, if it's the same overall design, is exhausting air out the back as well, so there is a vaccum for new air in the middle of the case. It may make no difference either way. Air only cooling is funny that way...

But you might wanna check into another power supply... maybe.

  20. If they make Trek 3, they need to use Gary Seven and the Guardian to prevent the Temporal Cold War from screwing up the timeline further. Oh, and there has to be a saving of the Air Force guy while we're at it. Oh, and we gotta make sure that Zarabeth gets a visit from Spock, and Mr. Atoz is dealt with. All while the Talosians have gotten desperate and have actually ventured forth from their planet to capture breeding stock, but the Doomsday machine is barreling down on their planet. And during that, somehow, the Romulans get all uppity and use their cloaked ships to take out San Fransisco, and the UFP's representatives from all worlds.

And then Q shows up and says "now, how in the HELL am I ever going to match wits with Picard and Janeway while all you idiots are screwing up things?", snaps his fingers, and Gene Roddenberry and Gene Coon are resurrected and right the ship called The Franchise. Whereupon the movie then explores predjudices based on skin color (Black on the right side vs left, but with a female as the 'convict', and her and the cop kiss, which up to now was a major taboo for TV...) while Charlie X somehow gets Rand to love him, so he doesn't go all ape****, and the Feds convince him to be a cool person and do things for him.

They find Trelane, of course, and then they use Charlie to battle him... when the Catspaw people decide both of those idiots need a talking to. But then Spock's brain is taken away, and Kirk disappears to be a buzzing sound...

Then the Borg show up and assimilate them all, finally bringing the end of the franchise.

And tribbles somewhere. Can't forget the tribbles.

Yeah, you know you want to revisit and mash all that together. It'll be epic and awesome, cubed.

  21. Hm. Nothing looks hugely wrong with any of that... Although I do applaud you for puttin' up with a single core P4 2.8G. I know what that chip can and can't do... it must be a real slide show sometimes, even with HT going on. And with all that background stuff... Perhaps a MSConfig and turn all that off might help...

Still. The point is very clear, you can *specifically* recreate the issue, so it points to a couple of things:

There is a bad .PIGG file regarding the Universty in Steel. Or, perhaps just the university textures or something. You should probably do a full check of the files and see if they fix themselves.

Could be a bad piece of main memory that happens to trigger when you load that. I would be very curious if turning off some of the background processes and then running the game again changes this in anyway, as the bad spot might not 'get hit'.

Could be a bad piece of video memory, but... there's no real checking that, and generally, the resultant video errors on screen are what you see, not a full system reboot.

I don't suppose you've checked your event viewer to see if it has any information regarding the reboots... I see the dumprep being called for, which can be called for after a bad reboot... so there should be an event log associated with this problem...?

Fully check your hard drive out. Full scan, sectors too. Could be the .PIGG for that Steel University is sitting on a bad sector or something.

Here's an easy test for the hard drive thing: Make a copy of the original. Then change the name of the original folder, then rename the new copy to the old original's name. Retest. If that changes the game, then it's a hard drive issue. If it doesn't, it's a system issue, see the above.

    Hope that helps!
  22. I have taken to using Pandora and selecting moody, brooding movie soundtracks. Seems to fit pretty well, and some of the timing of them is uncanny with what's going on.

Or... a station I made called Fish Heads which has comedic/parodical music. Guess where I got that name.
  23. N300 refers to a Netgear spec on communications speeds over the wireless. The router itself is going to actually be a a WNR2000 or some such like that.

Having said that, any Netgear N300 capable router is going to work on the 802.11g mode, which is faster than the 802.11b, and also does 802.11n, which is faster than both:

    b=up to 11M
    g=up to 54M
    n=up to 150M

These are for the wireless, depending on the equipment and environment. Wired is always 10/100/1000 depending on the equipment at both ends of the cable, and usually is auto-negotiated.

Also, the more items on the wireless, the less each item gets to use when all are talking. It's a 'pie' of wireless, and if 5 things need to use it, then each gets 1/5th of a pie. One gets it all, if the others are silent. This plays into the 'up to' part as well.

Generally, though, from a *local* wireless speed viewpoint, sure, makes sense. And it may for the reset thing too.

    ---

Having said all that backgrounder, though, the internet itself, unless you have a monster connection, is rarely over 10M anyway, and most homes are in the 3-6 range. The overhead for the wireless may or may not be enough to make a significant change in the INTERNET speed between the two boxes. From that standpoint, it's more difficult to say "yep, that'll be better".

And finally, if all your equipment excepting the router is 802.11b, then it will be about zero difference in the first place.

There is also some thought that the lowest item in the list of 802.11b or g will make the entire wireless revert to b only. I am not sure about that one, myself, as I only use G these days, and force the router to not accept b connections anymore. We've not upgraded to N because there's just frankly no need to for us for what we use at the workplaces. Yet. Never know what the future needs.

    ---

You might look into upgrading the firmware of the current router if it's old, and resetting it. But if you're doing that, may as well do the Netgear. They're pretty good stuff, actually.

I hope this helped in some way!

What they NEED is to go back to closed beta testing. That way, people won't be under the impression that they can go posting information/pictures about stuff on beta that may not be part of the content being tested in the general discussion forum.
Could not agree more with the closed beta. Seriously.

Even though the statistics show I'd not be invited, I'd be way more than ok with this.

I wonder if there's not enough VIPs that'd do it, so they went open to entice more...

/I find playing it to test, then having, in a certain sense, to play it again on the mains sorta makes it not special when it goes live, for myself.
//I also try to avoid spoilers about Beta stuff, but this one intrigued me.
