  1. Level 50 AVs normally have 28270 hit points, so with a net DPS of 50, it would "only" take you 28270 / 50 = 565.4, or 9 minutes 25.4 seconds. Their regeneration is 5% every 15 seconds, so 28270 * 5% / 15 = 94.23 DPS.
  2. Eh, I'd pay two billion for it. Still hoping to get one for less, though. And yeah, that's the going rate for it crafted.
  3. My Katana/Dark Armor will be able to handle AVs when it's done, though I'm not building it specifically as an AV-soloer. I've also seen a Katana/Fire build that would have been able to handle AVs with minor tweaks. And if Fire could do it, I'm sure Electric Armor could do it. Electrical Melee and Spines can probably put out the DPS necessary, as it isn't all that high. So I'm guessing that just about anything can handle it if built for the job.

Granted, if I was wanting to solo AVs, I would NOT level up a Spines/Fire for the job. But I'm betting there's some build for it that could get the job done, at least on some of the easier AVs. It would just be a silly waste of Spines/Fire's true capabilities.
  4. Well, I've seen most Scrapper sets solo AVs no temps, no inspirations. If you're looking for the best combinations, I think right now that would be Dark Melee/Shield Defense if you have an unlimited budget, or Fire Melee/Super Reflexes if you don't have a lot to spend. But plenty of combinations can get the job done with the right build.
  5. I don't think anything is wrong with IO sets. I don't think there's any reason to have drop rates correspond to popularity. I don't think there's any reason to have every IO in a set be useful to a particular build. I don't think there's anything wrong with having some IOs worth two billion influence and others not even worth the time to vendor. I agree with Reptlbrain that trade offs are an important part of the game, and that IOs as currently-implemented are good at requiring build trade offs. I believe that acquiring expensive IOs is a separate sub game for people who really like playing their 50s, and I would be sad if this sub game was taken away from me through reduced prices/increased availability.

    Heretic!

However, I level up on a combination of SOs, IOs and frankenslotting. The basic rule is that I'm really frickin' lazy while I'm leveling up, so I use whatever is easiest to get NAO (SOs) unless I'm having an actual problem (typically endurance, typically addressed by taking the time to frankenslot attacks at buy it nao prices in the mid 30s).

    Kat/DA build

I'd say it's quite good overall. Very nice positional defense, though when you're that close, I'd suggest going all the way to the soft cap. Healing in Dark Regeneration doesn't bother me, as you aren't always surrounded, and don't always hit. I think of it as worst case scenario insurance. But it shouldn't come at the cost of recharge. Death Shroud is woefully underslotted - it's pretty much your best attack, an AoE with NO activation time that costs no more endurance than your single target attacks. You're also going to have trouble hitting uplevel enemies with no Kismet unique, Tactics or Focused Accuracy.

Since you're looking at an unlimited budget, let me toss out the current state of my plan for my own Katana/Dark. I'll mention one of the more unusual choices in it, which was to skip Soaring Dragon and Golden Dragonfly in favor of a Divine Avalanche -> Gambler's Cut -> Sting of the Wasp -> Gambler's Cut chain. It loses 10 to 15 DPS and knockdown, but saved a power choice and associated slots, allowing me to fit in everything else I wanted. I considered it a reasonable trade.

As for endurance usage, it isn't sustainable with all toggles going. The build will last about six minutes if all the procs fire at an average frequency. However, dropping Death Shroud (to avoid killing Dark Regen fodder in an AV fight) or Cloak of Fear makes it sustainable, again if the procs fire at an average frequency. In normal fights with inspirations allowed, I'd be spamming The Lotus Drops and using up a lot more endurance, but also getting and using blue drops, so I'm guessing it will be fine.

(Edit: Ignore the levels at which powers are taken. Cleaning that up is the last thing I do.)

  8. Having fun is certainly the important part. I can't speak for others, but I build my scrappers for survivability first, damage output second. While leveling, I frankenslot my attacks in the mid 30s, and have SOs and common IOs in everything else. I also put a Steadfast Protection and a Kismet in every build. The frankenslotting tends to be for a whole lot of endurance reduction to allow me to run a whole lot of toggles that help my survivability - Tough, Weave, Maneuvers, whatever. I also make liberal use of inspirations.

I wouldn't suggest judging the capability of entire primaries and secondaries based on your experience with them through level 12 and 23. You've barely even scratched the surface of the sets at that point.
  10. I've "raced" up characters, and I've done it a lot more casually. Sergei is my best example of a character I raced. I already had an end game build planned for him before I even rolled him up, and I had goals I wanted to accomplish with that end game build. So I cranked as hard and as fast as I could, much of it over a double XP weekend, hit fifty, purpled him out, and set about doing what I wanted to do with him. His journey STARTED when I finished purpling him out.

Most of my other characters are a lot more casual about the journey to 50 and beyond. A handful have been level pacted to mostly-inactive characters, almost as much to slow down the journey as anything (I think it's too easy to hit 50 in this game for my personal preferences). I have one other purpled toon, my namesake. I have over 1500 hours on that character. He was all about the journey, never about a particular destination. I very slowly built and evolved a character I loved playing, then got curious what he could accomplish.

Both ended up accomplishing pretty much the same thing, but their journeys were very different.
  11. Well, lethal damage is at least as highly-resisted as smashing, and there are a lot of lethal sets. But yeah, Martial Arts seems lackluster. Not bad, just not particularly good either. To me, the main thing it needs is more consistent secondary effects. Maybe replace Crippling Axe Kick's immobilize with stun, and add stun to Storm Kick and Crane Kick. I don't want to use a useless attack (Cobra Strike) just to get some reliable secondary effects. Still, if they're porting over Energy Melee some day, maybe they don't want to have two stun sets. If so, Martial Arts just needs some general buffing to make up for the mess of mostly-useless secondary effects.

The idea would be to soft cap melee using powers and set bonuses, and not require Parry. Then you use the highest DPS Broad Sword chain, buffed nicely by Against All Odds. Result is very good DPS. I wouldn't personally go that route, as there are better combinations for DPS, like Dark Melee/Shield Defense. But if you have a level 50 BS/SD sitting around, and a few billion burning a hole in your pocket, why not?

Anyway, you don't need to get all the way to +305% recharge in Hack. I think it's the highest DPS chain while there's still a half second gap or so. I can't remember and am too lazy to calculate, though.

(Edit: I still want to make a Katana/Shield Defense. )
  13. I'd postulate Parry -> Hack -> Head Splitter -> Hack -> Disembowel as being the best chain for single-stacked Parry, particularly if you can fit an Achilles' Heel in Hack. But it takes a lot of recharge (+219%) in Hack to bookend Head Splitter like that, so it's definitely an end-game chain. And with Shields, you would probably be better off soft-capping melee without Parry and going for Head Splitter -> Hack -> Disembowel -> Hack. That would do some serious damage if built properly.

Me too. I can always find a way to spend endurance. And having my latest project be Katana/Dark makes burning endurance child's play! OK, there's probably some build out there with too much endurance recovery and nothing good to spend it on. I've never had a build like that, though.

That's not a long battle. THIS is a long battle.
  16. By your level, I was running the Head Splitter -> Parry -> Disembowel -> Hack -> Parry chain. I think that's the best chain that double-stacks Parry. For that, you need +108% recharge in Head Splitter, so it takes a little global recharge, or just some serious frankenslotting and living with a half-second pause. Parry needs +20% recharge, Disembowel +38% recharge, and Hack +5% recharge.

Make sure you have Shield Charge. That's big damage AND mitigation, at least when it comes up. Don't Shield Charge into a group; Shield Charge from within the group so you get the Against All Odds buff. Consider Whirling Sword. It's not a great AoE, but almost any AoE is going to do better damage than working your way through a group with a single-target chain.

On the defense side, you should have either Combat Jumping or Hover, and should probably have picked up Tough and Weave by now. I wouldn't bother adding slots to Combat Jumping for defense, but I WOULD put a defense IO in the default slot rather than a jump IO.

All that will have you very close to only needing a single Parry. If you pick up a Steadfast Protection and a Gaussian set as pyrite suggests, you probably will need only a single Parry. I continued double Parrying anyway, because it gets expensive to pull off a single Parry chain without adding another attack, and I don't suggest adding another attack due to it being a "waste" of a power and slots. Besides, double Parry gives you a nice buffer for debuffs and misses.

A good resource is John Printemps' guide to Shields, which also has some hard core IO builds, including a great one for Broad Sword/Shields. Worth a look.

I'll post the end game build I had planned for mine before I decided to retire that toon when I hit 50 and work on a Katana/Dark. Note that this is before Physical Perfection came out, and I'd definitely be trying to fit that in now. Also note that this is a survivability build intended for AE with all of its to-hit buffs and 75% to-hit pets, which is why I'm running around with my melee defense at 81.5%. That's serious overkill for most of the game. DPS is pretty bad as a result of double-stacking Parry and not taking advantage of the Achilles' Heel proc. Now that the luster of AE has worn off, I'd definitely build it a little differently.

You barely have to spend at all to soft cap. Here's softcapped by 36 with a single IO. In practice, you'd probably drop Maneuvers and pick up Hasten or Aid Self, and make up the difference with Gaussians and a few other set bonuses here and there. But the basic idea is that if you take Combat Jumping and Weave, and slot out your defensive powers, you're almost there.

  18. Physical Perfection is the worst thing to happen to my Katana/Dark - now I have one more power I can't live without. Frickin' tight builds. *grumble* *grumble*
  19. Practiced Brawler used perfectly is 1.72 seconds out of every 120, which is to say about a 1.4% DPS loss. A few people might try to double stack it, which would be a 2.8% DPS loss. Figure the average person is somewhere between those two numbers. Let's call it 2%, which I consider to be pretty small.

I don't have Practiced Brawler on auto, and I have it slotted for endurance reduction instead of recharge. I tend to click it when convenient, such as during the couple seconds that Soul Drain is down. The Battle Maiden video was in I12, prior to the Dark Melee buffs, so prior to me picking up Soul Drain. So I probably didn't have any specific moments I was waiting for, and might well have been clicking much earlier than I needed to. However, even if I had it on auto, it would only fire every 75 seconds, which would be a 2.3% DPS loss total, or a 0.7% DPS loss compared to optimal. With that sort of minimal difference, I err on the side of caution, and don't wait for it to start blinking.
  20. Right now I'm playing +0x8 for the drops. I was playing +2x5 while leveling.

Doh! I can't believe I forgot the purple patch.

    OK, so with my current slotting (53% enhancement), I get 11.5 seconds against even-level enemies, so 5.52 seconds against +4s. With 69.8% accuracy against +4s, for the first 0.52 seconds, there's a 100%-(100%-69.8%)^2 = 90.9% chance they're afraid, and then for 4.48 seconds, a 69.8% chance they're afraid, for an overall average of (0.52*90.9% + 4.48*69.8%)/5 = 72.0%.

    If I add a +3 Endoplasm, I get 6.82 seconds and 83.3% accuracy. (1.82*(100%-(100%-83.3%)^2)+3.18*83.3%)/5 = 88.4%.

    If I remove the fear enhancement, I get 3.58 seconds and 69.8% accuracy. (3.58*69.8%+1.42*0%)/5 = 50.0%.

OK, I guess I know where I stand, then. Not sure how many slots I'll end up devoting to the cause, but at least I know what I'm getting for those slots. Thanks!
  22. I want to make sure I have the correct understanding of Cloak of Fear. Both Mids' and City of Data show an activation time of 5 seconds in Cloak of Fear. I believe that means that Cloak of Fear only pulses (activates) every 5 seconds. So if a single pulse misses, the default duration of 7.45 seconds means the enemy would become unafraid for at least 2.55 seconds.

If that is correct, I'll probably want to enhance the fear portion of it to at least 10 seconds so that two misses in a row would be required for a minion to become unafraid. But I don't want to waste the slot if I'm misunderstanding how it works.
  23. Much as I love Regen, go Dark.
  24. I wasn't particularly ebil. One of my niches had a bit of a run, doubling my profit per from maybe one million to two million and allowing me to dump much of my accumulated stock. Probably sold a hundred or hundred and fifty of that set. My other main niche seemed unaffected, and I only sold a handful and for normal profit margins. The stock I built up there may take a while to liquidate.
  25. Oops, yeah, definitely use Blinding Feint.
