Okay, that oughtta do it. Pages are looking normal again, and we're upgraded to the latest and greatest version of MediaWiki. I'm about to fall over tired (long day at the day job), so I'm going to go to bed and upgrade the Ouroboros Portal tomorrow night.
-
Posted update in OP above. Putting Paragon Wiki in read-only mode for a while, then taking it down to upgrade MediaWiki. Don't think it will take long, I'll post again when I'm done.

Sweet ham on a toaster! Acanous Quietus is back!
(That's my new catchphrase, by the way. Is it working?) -
Needless to say...
(I'm always amused by people who say, "Needless to say," then finish the sentence. If it is needless to say, why are you telling me?) -
Here's a bit of serendipity that I think is maybe worth sharing. About three months before Web of Arachnos was published, I created a supergroup and web site named the Paragon City Free Press. When the novel was published, I bought and read it. Imagine my surprise when, in the story, Monica Richter (aka Maiden Justice, Lord Recluse's sister and eventually Statesman's Wife) worked for a newspaper called, you guessed it, the Paragon City Free Press. The newspaper is mentioned explicitly three times that I know of in the game: in a mission from Steven Sheridan, in Dennis Ewell's backstory, and it is featured prominently in a mission from Colleen Nelson. All of these instances were, to my knowledge, added after the novel was published.
The Paragon City Free Press is actually a HUGE reason the Paragon Wiki exists today. If you're curious about the history and linkage between the two, read a history I wrote up a while back. Also, although the current Paragon City Free Press site is currently dormant, don't expect that to be true much longer. Something is afoot... -
Here's one that I think is pretty neat. It's shamelessly ripped from the Paragon Wiki, but that's okay I guess, since I'm the one who originally put it there.
Although the protest signs are unreadable in the game, in the graphic file that is used as the texture, they are readable. They all say some variation of the following in a handwritten font (misspellings are deliberate):
Quote:We are generaly discontent with our current situation & would like to show our discontentiveness publicly! (If that's OK with you) -
Hey all, I just posted an update in the top message above. If you see any problems that weren't problems before, please let me know.
-
Quote:Hey now, I post my e-mail address publicly. Google's spam filters are second-to-none, and I'm pretty wise when it comes to avoiding scams like these.Unless you posted your email to the forums (a real bonehead move, honestly)...
(It's tonyv@cohtitan.com, by the way, in case you get bored and want to say hi, or more likely, have an issue with the Paragon Wiki or other Titan Network site. But if you want to e-mail me because of the latter, make sure the sites aren't under maintenance first!) -
Hey all, I just wanted to post a quick message saying that I'm going to be doing some maintenance on the Titan Network servers today. All of the sites may be periodically unavailable, including the Paragon Wiki, CIT, RedTomax's site, and the build planners. This is scheduled maintenance; nothing has crashed, so don't panic. (Yet.
)
Oh, and I don't mean that it's going to be down the whole day; it might be up and down. Just don't do something that critically depends on it. I'll post another message once the maintenance is done and we have the server in a stable up state.
Update! (23:06 Eastern, July 12)
Okay, that oughtta do it. Just in case, I've enabled full logging and notification in the wiki, so if anything's broken it will report it to us--and to you, too. If you see any weirdness, please let me know.
Update! (21:30 Eastern, July 12)
We still have a couple of lingering issues with the Paragon Wiki in that one of our extensions isn't working and causing some pages not to render correctly. Supposedly a couple of dot releases of MediaWiki fixes the problem. Accordingly, I'm going to place the Paragon Wiki in read-only mode for a while and will have it down a little while later while I try to get the MediaWiki software upgrade installed.
Sorry for the inconvenience!
Update! (22:45 Eastern, July 10)
Okay, I think I've got a handle on it now. I'm still mopping up a few minor things, and of course, I'm going through and trying to validate that everything is up and running, but hopefully the lion's share of the work--that is, the part that means extended outages--is done.
I'll be monitoring this thread for a while in case anyone reports any problems here. If you see something wrong that wasn't wrong before, please either post a reply here, post a message on our forums, or e-mail me at tonyv@cohtitan.com.
Sorry again for the inconvenience, but this should make everything work better in the long run and give us a few more widgets to develop new stuff with.
Update! (21:15 Eastern, July 10)
Scratch all of that... I just remembered you can't directly upgrade from Ubuntu 9.04 to 10.04, you have to go through 9.10. I have to do another upgrade. Still, the vast majority of the time I spent before was in backing up everything three times, including several gigabytes of offsite transfer, so this shouldn't take nearly as long. -
Just to add to everyone else's comments, the "top supergroups" are the supergroups that have farmed the most prestige, plain and simple. Very rarely will you run across any friendship or camaraderie in one of them. As a member, you are merely a tool to get more prestige to keep them in the top slots on the server, in a warped competition with other supergroups doing the same.
My honest advice is to not be a tool like they are. Group up with your friends and players you like and respect. Some of the real top supergroups in the game are quite small. -
Hey all, I'm frustrated beyond all belief. The thing is, there used to be some decent wireless keyboards on the market that were decent for gaming. Nowadays, though, keyboard manufacturers seem to have decided that they all have to go mucking around with a good thing. I'm currently in the market for a decent wireless keyboard that can be used for gaming, and I just haven't been able to find one.
Here are my criteria of what makes a good wireless keyboard:
- The Insert, Delete, Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down keys must be in their correct traditional positions. Insert, Home, Page Up on the top row, Delete, End, and Page Down on the bottom row. This is a game breaker to me, no pun intended.
- The function keys have to be full-sized keys. No stupid tiny little plastic tabs that are hard to find or hit. Ditto the escape key and the Print Screen, Scroll Lock (yes, I do use it) and Pause/Break keys.
- It has to have a numeric keypad, and all of the keys have to be in their correct traditional positions.
- It has to be able to handle chording at least decently well. For those unfamiliar with the term, many non-gaming keyboards shortcut the manufacturing process by putting keys that are not usually pressed together on the same circuits. For example, they think that no one would ever hold down the W key, Alt key, and 4 key at the same time, so if you're running forward in the game and you want to fire off some power on your secondary tray, you're screwed.
- I'd like to have at least a volume control button and a mute button. Other media control buttons are okay, but not required.
- I'd prefer Bluetooth, but RF is livable.
- I'd like an LCD on it, but it's not required.
- Special "macro" or function keys are okay, but really, unnecessary.
I'm really frustrated at how like 90% of all wireless keyboards manufactured today violate the first requirement above. Each manufacturer has their own layout now, and some manufacturers even use several different layouts among their different product lines. For example, Logitech, which I used to buy all the time, has no less than five different layouts for their keyboards!
Anyway, anyone have suggestions? -
You know that "Coming Storm" thing that has been alluded to for a while? Well now you know what it's all about.
(I don't really believe that, I'm fine with the markets merging. It was just something too funny to say to pass up.) -

When Jimmy "Scotty" Doohan was 54, he married a 17-year-old fan, to whom he remained married until his death at 85 in 2005. In 2000, at the ripe young age of 80, he had a baby girl, Sarah. The guy is a personal hero of mine for several reasons, and that's one of them.
I met him in person when I was a teenager. Being a pretty hard-core Trekkie at the time, it was one of the biggest thrills of my life. The best part about it is that the guy was just so incredibly nice and genuinely interesting that, although I'm not as big into Star Trek these days, it still is. I've never met anyone who was famous who was quite like him. I met Leonard Nimoy later, who is arguably much more important to the Trek franchise. For god's sake, he was Spock, but after meeting Jimmy, I was just "meh" when I met Leonard.
Granted, I didn't really want to see him in spandex, but the guy is a hero in every sense of the word. Did you know that he fought in World War II at Juno Beach on D-Day, taking six bullets, including one in the chest that was blocked by a cigarette case, and one that took off his right middle finger?
Anyway, I digress. Some old people, even really old people, truly rock. -
Quote:If they were to offer some kind of "costume pack," I'll see your suggestion and raise you one. I'd like to see a "mobile tailor" power, kind of like the mobile crafting station and mobile AE interface. You'd be able to access a tailor from pretty much anywhere.A booster like this should include a Tailor Teleporter power. Pop the power, and it takes you directly to the nearest Icon or Facemaker.
Personally, I've dreamed of that as a vet reward, but it'd be incredibly handy for everyone (certainly more useful than 1/2 off tailor costs when you have umpteen free tailor tokens), so including it in a costume booster would benefit far more players.
If they really wanted to pull out all of the stops and impress me, I'd like to see them consider developing and releasing a full-fledged offline costume editor. I know, it's been suggested umpteen times before and they used to have a Korean version of one, but I'm suggesting that it all be part of an integrated package. For $30 (or whatever), you get the offline costume editor, the in-game mobile tailor power, and five extra costume slots.
Win!
I'd also like to see a "mobile market" power for accessing Wentworth's/the Black Market also, but that would fall under a different integrated expansion that would include an offline market manager and a few extra market slots. -
Well, the thing with me is that unlike a lot of other players, I do not subscribe to the "more options is better" mentality. We already have so many options and settings that I have a hard time finding the exact one(s) I'm looking for. Consider that when a new player joins the game, all of those nitty grittly little options can seriously get in the way, and it's not obvious what a lot of them do. Also, I'd bet that a majority of players do not know about the /option_save(_file) and /option_load(_file) commands, so a lot of these people are going in and resetting all of their personal preferences for every character they create.
Sure, they could add options for every buff and every other way one player affects another, but I think that it gets to the point where it's counterproductive. Looking at all of the options that we can already set, I really think we're well past the point where the developers should decide what a sensible default is and let that be that, especially on things like this where the down side, if it exists, is so rare and meaningless that it's practically non-existent. To be honest, I'd like to see some options removed, not added. -
Quote:My honest advice is to have patience and, above all, keep working on it yourself. It took a long time of me writing articles and answering questions here with links before word kind of got around and people really started editing the Paragon Wiki hot and heavy. And as for the wiki... I needs people to help with it, otherwise it shall never be done... well done enough to be considered done anyways.
If you build it, they will come. But you really do have to build it, and prove that you're willing to put effort into it yourself. -
If you're willing to dual-boot, you might want to give PiTiVi a try.

Quote:Okay, here you go. It was actually after it was reinstated, but still, I think most people would agree these are pretty harsh words.*See, this is the kind of thing that pisses me off. Next time you try to accuse me of doing something, make sure I actually did it. Or you can go make sure now. I'd LOVE to see a quote where I yelled about reinstating the prompt BEFORE it was reinstated. A link to the post would be very handy, too.
Quote:Yeah? Go to hell! And you know what else? I'm GLAD they changed it to something that pisses you off. *******!
* Lest anyone take this post seriously, Sam did say that, but it's grossly taken out of context for humorous and satirical purposes. Please be sure to click on the little arrow linky to see the original post and the full context. -
Quote:This is my thought exactly. It sounds to me like the only kind of person who would be interested in this book is the kind who wants to engage in some extreme shortcuts to getting to the end of the game. (Which, by the way, is rather pointless, since as almost any City of Heroes player will tell you, the fun is in the journey to 50. Once you actually hit level 50, most players get quite bored with those characters.)Are you here to PLAY, or have people play FOR you?
Exactly what is your hurry to get to 50? This is not one of the games where you rush to max level so you can do end-game raids, be useful to your guild, whatever. Once they hit 50, most people either start a new character or continue doing the same stuff they did on the way to 50.
The problem is, the demographic that this guide is targeted at would be much better served by asking questions here, glancing at some of the archetype forums, and reading a few articles on the wiki. It would be significantly faster than reading this guide, and the information would be orders of magnitude more current and relevant. As a bonus, you don't waste $30.
I've always felt that in the age of the Internet, having these paid guides are silly. I really just don't get why one guy thinks he's smarter than over a hundred thousand players, many of which are willing to freely share their hard-won knowledge and information. But hey, whatever, if he can convince people to pay $30 for his guide and make some money at it, more power to him I guess. Still, as a player, I just can't imagine exactly what it is he thinks he has to offer over the resources already mentioned several times. I'd trust pretty much anyone who has posted in this thread--veterans of the game who have been here for over six years and who have proven their mettle repeatedly--over some guy I've never heard of who wants me to pay him $30. Sounds like snake oil to me. -
Quote:This has been covered already.People keep saying one side is a majority and the other is a minority, but I have yet to see any actual evidence of said claims.

Quote:From his posts, I think the OP is looking for two primary things different from the Paragon Wiki. First, he wants to be able to find the lore much more easily. As an example, when you go to Statesman's page on the Paragon Wiki, there's information there's a lot of lore there, but there's also information on Statesman's Task Force, badges you can get for helping or defeating Statesman, even a link to a page about Jack "Statesman" Emmert. When he types in Statesman, he wants to see game lore about Statesman, period, without having to sift through all of the other stuff. Second, he wants a more specialized index of lore resources than what we have at the Paragon Wiki. That's actually doable on the Paragon Wiki, though we've always preferred using categories to group related topics. This is where I think I'm sitting in this whole thing. I'm not trying to deter the OP from carrying on, because their mind's made up and I've no issue with that. I just think that a more useful solution would have been to get some people dedicated to updating ParagonWiki with lore information. Even if they make a copy of some pages, such as "Lord Nemesis: Lore", and store it all there. I think that as much information at one source is a great idea, and even though I only use it infrequently, the Titan Network is doing a wonderful job with that at the moment.
I hope this new wiki does well. I don't see it as a "competing" wiki; it's more like a wiki of specialized information. Ultimately, I'd like for the information that is in his lore wiki to also be in the Paragon Wiki also in some shape, form, or fashion, as long as it's part of the game's canon, which I think he is striving for. But if having it consolidated succinctly in one place helps people find what they're looking for more quickly, hey, I'm all for that and I hope it does well.
Quote:I was even a tad uneasy when the Ouroboros Portal opened up. It's something I'm sure I'd be a little more active with if more people moved over from their respective server handbooks, and if a more uniform page setup was determined. I can't feel myself settling in when every page has a different style of character box. But until then, having at least three character databases makes me feel less inclined to use any of them. -
Quote:This is patently false. I honestly have no clue where you got this crazy idea from, but it's wrong, wrong, wrong. The people that cried in the Dev's ears are the RP crowd for most part...
Quote:Oh good, another idiotic Rp'er bringing annoyance to the masses.....if only the Rp'ers would Rp in the game, instead of about game mechanics.
The only reason I can think of for not liking the buff is that sometimes I want to get clean screenshots without stuff like cards circling around avatars. Still, even that has nothing to do with RP, and such occasions are rare enough that I really don't care.
If you don't like RP, fine. But seriously, what the hell is up with the misguided and misdirected hate? What's next, did RPers cause the Gulf oil spill, too? Did RPers also get Conan O'Brien fired? The whole housing bubble/crushing recession thing? Yup. Friggin' RPers.
