If Freezing Rain is hated in teams I missed the memo, but Ice Storm and Rain of Fire must be much worse in that case as they only do damage but have the same "scatter" effect.

Things have been changed with Freedom that will mean it won't work any more because it's "replacing" the wrong textures.
  3. Presumably you've /bug'd it in game so that people are aware of it?

    Synapse?

Of course, it all makes perfect sense in the context of the current Signature Story Arc...
  6. I'm not one for attracting a lot of attention to myself (no, really, stop laughing), so I think my approach would best be summed up by a quote from Futurama:

You'd be surprised; good players will notice you. The rest won't until you're gone.

I ran an ITF the other day on my Storm/Ice Defender; I was the only really support toon in the team. We were at the console and had it down to about 10% HP, all was going well and everyone was happy. Then the final wave kicked in and all my toggles, pseudopets and AoEs attracted a bit of attention, I died before I could react. Within about 10 seconds, we had a team wipe.

The effects of Freezing Rain + Hurriance + Snow Storm + Tornado + Steamy Mist + Lightning Storm + Ice Storm along with Leadership toggles make one hell of a difference to the survivability of anyone nearby (and piss off melee toons no end ) but it's not that obvious until they're not there any more and suddenly people start getting hit.

The same is true of other ATs. A good tank can often look like they're standing around not doing much, but if they go down it's suddenly extremely apparent exactly what they were doing - namely keeping everything focused on them rather than you.

It's nice to know that you're making a difference, even if it doesn't seem like the team has noticed.
  8. Personally, I'd have suggested/requested a little more in the healing/buff department and maybe given it another team wipe before quitting.

One of the challenges with City of Heroes rather free-form team makeup is that you often find yourself as the only Defender or only Melee toon in a team and it can make it hard to work out who should be doing what. Of course, a good team leader should be helping out by telling people what their roles are if they're clearly not figuring them out for themselves (and I apologise for starting this sentence with "of").

You were, arguably, marginally in the wrong for not saying anything and just expecting people to support you correctly (for all you know they may all have been brand new players who just didn't know what was expected of them, but the chances are slim), though I wouldn't blame you for it.

  10. My presumption is that all the recent downtime & patching is because they want to make really, really sure that the Freedom launch goes smoothly.

If I've learnt anything from watching other MMOs it's that the single most important thing is to have a game that *works* at launch. Look at all the "Gorilla Killers" that have been launched in the last 7 years and failed. Now look at how many of them were laggy, buggy content-free messes at launch.

It sucks for us, in my case the last 3 weeks I've had off work (well, I quit my job, so I guess that counts as "off work") and so I've been hit hard by the downtime, but ultimately I would rather have a month of heavy downtime if it means a smooth launch for Freedom and a large influx of new players who hang around and buy stuff.

This is something you see all the time in Europe and just live with, a quirk of learning the English language.
It's something I see *far* more commonly amongst supposed native English speakers. Most of the people I know who have English as a second language speak and write it far more proficiently than people I encounter day-to-day in the UK.

Probably doable but the cost/benefit economics things won't work
My understanding from the ustreams is that it isn't doable, there are too many interconnects (like WW, Global Chat, AE) which need all the servers to be running the same code or that require no I/O to update.

On a side note, Zwill, if you're reading this, we want that Techie uStream you said we couldn't have because it would be too boring
  13. The devs said in a recent ustream that depending on how easy it is to do within the framework of the forum software it's something that they're looking at doing.

Certainly it's possible in vBulletin to give different groups different rights in different sections, I'm not sure how they've integrated the forum authentication into their own game authentication system and what challenges it introduces.
  14. It's not often I say this, but write Boomtown out of the game. Apart from a couple of hunts and a couple of door missions, the zone serves no purpose. There's nothing unique about it, nothing to draw you there if you don't have to go and the whole "destroyed city area" thing has been so epically superseded by First Ward that it just doesn't seem worth keeping it around any more.

Another is T5/6, and hates it. He is using 2 builds full of IOs already. Unless he's going to put some cash in he either loses the IOs by respecing, or he fights unenhanced.

There should be a middle ground. Say T3 you can't buy, make or slot IOs, but the ones you already have perform scaled down to as good as SOs with no set bonuses or special abilities. T5 you can buy/craft/use the common single stat IOs.

It's not a major incentive, but loses some of the disincentive to come back to the game, I fear we won't see him again unless this changes as he doesn't have enough free time at the moment to wish to subscribe. When he does have time, I suspect he'll, have moved on to another game as the freedom offering doesn't work for him.
As I'm sure I've mentioned in other threads, we don't know what technical limitations the devs are working with here. It may simply be that they *can't* offer us the ability to use existing IOs but not slot new ones at the moment, the same applies to only allowing the use of common IOs rather than sets - if the game doesn't distinguish between them then it wouldn't be possible.

It's something they've mentioned in the past that they're hoping to offer.
  17. Looking at it from a purely functional perspective, free players are basically starting off with the Good vs Evil edition of the game.

No Auction House, no Invention System, no AE, no Incarnates - though they do have Ouroboros & Pocket D - whilst keeping all the QoL and Content improvements that we've seen since then. In that context, it's not such a bad deal.

Its grating.

I realize some of the maintenance needs to be gird wide, but at least SOME of it should be possible to do at 4 am in the morning, EU time. Just as most of it is done at around 4am US time now.
Playing devil's advocate here; 4am BST is between 8pm & 11pm in the US, which is virtually peak times for them, so it's just not going to happen.

They have to work their downtime to affect as few people as possible whist not making it unworkable for their engineers. As much as it pains me to say it, it comes down to numbers; more US players means that we get the short end of the stick. As for some token US Primetime Downtime to make us "happy", if you think we complain about the downtime, the backlash they get when the US servers are down is in a whole other league...

    Houston, we have dead hamsters.
  21. You know you can use /wdwsavefile [name] and /wdwloadfile [name] to save and load both window layout and colour/opacity settings?

I know it's not a fix, but it is a workaround that avoids you having to set everything manually every time it resets itself.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but changing in-game sounds doesn't require anything other than knowledge of the PIGG structure or order to correctly locate the replacement sounds, does it? If so then it's unlikely to fall foul of that provision.

I'm sorry, but your pigeonholing archetypes and merging these forums together will just create an unreadable mess where we, as forum posters and readers, CANNOT find the information we're looking for.

Seriously. "I'm playing a Dominator. I should look for the Dominator forum" is not a hard thing to grasp.
I have to agree, it's not like the sections are under-used compared to some of the other areas of the board.

Specifically: Multi-Media City of Heroes and Villains, Forum Games, Badges and Gladiators and sadly but understandably the EU, AU & Mac sections, all have less than 1,000 threads (some much less) and in the case of the first 3 could easily be merged in with other sections or removed entirely.
  24. They're all the "normal" auras which can only be unlocked by purchasing Aura Unlocks on the Paragon Market or running the Lv30 Aura mission on each character, so it sounds like a bug.

I see this discussed in game a lot too, and it really is putting off some returning vets.
To be fair, we don't know what technical limitations they're working with.
