Your sound card installation is *****. As odd as it sounds, it could have a bearing on how the game is detecting the video.
The other thing I see that could be causing a problem is that you have DirectX 10 installed, and DirectX 10 is not officially supported by Microsoft. Yes, I know the Alky Project has put out a kludge to allow you to install DX10 on XP, however, it is making changes to Windows files and THAT could be causing part of the problems as well. Sure, CoH is an OpenGL game, but it used DirectX for sound, and anytime you start monkeying with the DX files, you are inviting potential problems.
I'd recommend wiping the OS installation, installing XP cleanly, installing the motherboard drivers and sound drivers, then installing the video drivers cleanly. Don't install the unsupported DirectX 10, just update to DirectX 9 since that is supported on XP. Update to Service Pack 3 then install the game and see if you get the same error. If you have everything installed correctly, I'm thinking you won't get that error and if you do, I'd be leaning towards suspecting that the video card was damaged in the "computer meltdown" (which is really not a helpful description for people trying to help troubleshoot a problem).
If you don't think a full reinstallation is needed (you've messed with enough system files that I think it is needed) be sure that the video drivers are loaded cleanly. A fouled up installation is often worse than the wrong drivers. Download the video drivers from nVidia, but don't install them yet. Download and install DriverSweeper, but don't run it yet. Uninstall any nVidia Video card programs from the Add/Remove Programs listing, uninstall the video drivers from Device Manager (if there was no listing for the drivers in Add/Remove Programs). Reboot into Safe Mode. Run DriverSweeper and have it remove any nVidia Video or Display entries it finds. Reboot into normal Windows mode and cancel any new hardware wizards that come up. Run the driver file you downloaded earlier to install the video drivers. Due to the DirectX 10 installation, I don't think that will resolve the problems anyway.
You can lower the graphics settings before getting into the game by using TweakCoH to set those graphics settings. -
I'm not sure who's putting the tags on this thread, but the "unsupported" tag is completely false.
The Minimum System Requirements for the game list a GeForce 2 series video card. The Recommended System Requirements for the game list a GeForce 6200 Series video card, the same card that the OP has. Oh, and those specs are on the PlayNC website and on the Architect Edition package, so don't try saying that those are old specs.
Yes, one of the error messages contains the word unsupported, but the game does support the card. It's not going to run it at the highest settings and it's certainly not going to look the best, but the card is supported.
Rather than offering wild speculation as to what the OP should do to correct the problem, or wild speculation as to whether or not the card will run the game, I'm going to wait for the OP to post some specific information so that we have a better picture of what is happening.

CoH Helper -
There have been several reports of problems with the game from the 186.xx series of drivers.

Quote:Bwahahahahahahahahahahaha! They're obviously working feverishly, but I would speculate that some of the quietness over the past couple of months is due to the "big announcement" over the lead Design change.
I'd surmise that Matt Miller was not meeting managements expectations, and due to stress and health didn't think he could, despite the PR spin that there was no demotion.
Personally I think the i13/i14 debacle, the ridiculous over the top AE leveling response, and the woefully enept job Marking has been allowed to do for multiple years now, are all signs of poor overall leadership.
My guess is the brass has given management level ultimatums after reviewing last Quarters subscription numbers and the project status of Going Rogue and or i17.
And I'm sure the stress has turned into frustration for many of the dept leads, just look at BaBs a few weeks ago.

Funniest thing I've read all day.
Thanks, I needed a good laugh. -
Happy Birthday Con. Couldn't think of a more fitting place to post that sentiment.

I've bought parts from NewEgg for several years with no problems. One RMA that I can recall and NewEgg cross-shipped the RMA part and included a Return label for the bad part.
Tiger Direct ... well ... I promised several years ago that I wouldn't elaborate on my problems with them. I'll keep that promise, but I'll still avoid them at all costs. -
Well, once it's "in the pipeline" it's pretty much out of BAB's hands and into the hands of the Publishing Producer and their staff. Since Ghost Falcon recently got promoted to Development Producer and Doc Delilah took his place, it seems we have someone to PM that should be able to answer your questions.
Doc Delilah, get ready for the incoming PM's about fixes we have been told are "in the pipeline".

Okay, found what I was looking for. And I think it puts it into perspective better.
Quote:Yes, he was talking specifically about weapon draw/redraw, but he does enumerate fairly well all of the combat animation stances, etc.Well that and the 'stabbing-head-with-shield' factor.
FYI, we have seven combat modes:- Combat - unarmed combat mode, used by most powers
- Weapon - weapon in right hand. Broadsword, Mace, Axe, Arachnos Mace, etc.
- Dual Wield - Dual Blades, Dual Pistols
- *Lefthand - used by lefthand weapons. Archery and Katana
- *Claws - used by...hang on a sec...oh right, Claws.
- Shield - Shield and Shield Weapon combat mode
- Gun - two handed rifles. Assault Rifle and Robotics Mastermind
So really looking at 12-16 animations per power, counting the varients for Male, Female, and Huge for Gun combat mode and doubling everything for Flight. To put that in perspective, that's basically a powerset. That's also not counting the massive bloat that would happen to our sequencers from having 5-7 versions of every power animation.
I've actually looked at getting rid of weapon draw entirely, but even that is problematic. The system is very inflexible as far as different combat modes goes. -
Quote:Every attack power in the game, each of the three body types, then toss in hover and fly animations to use with those (yeah, someone will likely have hover or fly turned on while underwater, it's inevitable). For each of the three body types, I think was another deciding factor.
Makes for a rather long list of animations.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and for those that it fits, I think a Shield Combat mode and Shield non-Combat mode as well may be needed, but I can't recall if he's said that was additional animations or not. Possibly making a pass through emotes to see what emotes cause unacceptable clipping in the underwater modes as well and trying to smooth those out.
Glad it's BAB's headache if it ever comes to pass and not mine. I'd probably end up with a life sentence for multiple homicides. -
Along with what Sharker_Quint says, your HJT log shows some things that should be taken care of. I will stress though, updating to Service Pack 2 is one of the best things you can do to improve the performance, and with the problems many people reported with CoH and the 186.xx series of drivers those very much need to be upgraded or possibly even downgraded.
In you HJT log, all of those entries that start with O4 are programs that start when you start your computer. They are eating resources you need while gaming. Most of them don't need to be running unless you open the program that uses them, and they should turn themselves off. But, a lot of programmers take the easy way out and just have their program add itself to your startup list and they don't care what it does to your system performance.
For most of these, you can go to Start and type msconfig in the Search box then click on msconfig.exe when it shows up in the list. Click Yes or Allow on any security warnings Vista gives, and then when the Window opens, click on the Startup tab. Once you are there, I'd recommend unchecking the boxes for the following programs since they don't NEED to be running every time you start your computer:
CyberLink Update Power2Go shortcut
CyberLink LabelPrint Updater shortcut
CyberLink PowerStarter Updater shortcut
HP DVDAgent
HP SoftwareUpdater
Adobe Reader Speed Launcher
Logitech QuickCam Ribbon
QuickTime Task
Java Update Scheduler
CyberLink UpdatePDRShortcut
HP Advisor
DaemonTools
SinglesNet
YahooMessenger
LimeWire
Adobe Acrobat Speed Launcher
There are a few other startup items that I would do without, but stopping these from loading at startup should help. When you open the program that needs them, they will run, so you aren't hurting anything by getting them out of Startup.
The one line that really bothers me is the following line:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555
I believe this is either due to malware (spyware or a virus) that you currently have on your computer or previously had on your computer. If it is from malware that was previously on your computer, your malware solution didn't get rid of all of it.
I'd recommend downloading, updating and running a Full Scan with Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware (get the free edition). Be sure to Update it before running the scan. Remove any problems it finds. -
Well, you've provided basically no useful information to allow us to assist you in troubleshooting the problem.
I'd recommend starting with Zloth's ++ Common Solutions & Posting Guidelines ++ thread that is stickied in this forum.
Secondly, post a log from running CoH Helper as it will give information about your system and the CoH installation and settings.
Thirdly, post a log from running HijackThis. This will show what else is going on on your computer while you are playing CoH. -
If it is choppy in Windowed mode at Desktop Resolution, you have other problems. I've had no choppiness at all running in Windowed mode on Vista or Windows 7.

Quote:Well, if you would bother to read the very first post, Positron names that card specifically. I'll edit it down to that specific part so as not to stress you much.I don't know if this question has been answered, but I use a GeForce 9800 GT, so will I be able to run ultra-mode? I don't care either way, I'm just curious.

If you are looking to spend under US$100, then an NVidia 9800 GT is your best bet. For AMD (ATI/Radeon), we dont have enough of these cards at this price point to get you good data. This would be the minimum card for enabling all the features, only at reduced quality settings.
----------snip----------
Note: This is based on our current internal testing and might change by the time Going Rogue is released. Also, a video card is not the ONLY thing you should take into consideration. Your PC having a decent processor and memory will also enhance your performance. As we continue to test and get more information available we will update you. I hope this helps, and happy holidays! -
It's not a fix, but it is a workaround. Like je-saist said, run it in Windowed Mode at your Desktop resolution.
It's worked for me since late May when I got a new computer with Vista on it. -
I think you are going to want to get into the 4xxx series of Radeon cards at the minimum for Ultra Mode in an ATI card or the 9800 series or higher for an nVidia card.
And only 2 Gb of memory? Seriously? That's a bit low with how the game runs now. I'd go with at least 4 Gb unless you are sticking with XP in which case I'd go with 3 Gb. -
Quote:Only if they are in the list of 24 non-critical processes that Game Booster lets you turn off.
(Yes, it says a lot of processes are running. How would I stop these from starting at start up? Also, Game Booster deals with these... right? Right!?)
You seem to have a lot of instances of Chrome running. Stop browsing so much while you are trying to play, it's not helping.
Turn off the Media Booster, that's a drag on network resources that you don't need while you are gaming.
Turn off all of your extraneous chat programs like AIM, Skype, etc. Again, that's a drag on network resources that you don't need while you are gaming.
All of those O4 listings are items loading at startup. Most don't need to run at startup. They only need to run when you specifically need them. You can turn those off by going to Start and typing in msconfig in the Search box. Click on msconfig in the list, click on the Startup tab and then uncheck the unneeded items. I'd recommend getting rid of the Adobe Reader entry, the Quicktime Task entry, the iTunesHelper entry, the Media Booster entry, and the Google Updater entry. If it were me, I'd also kill the Steam entry and set Skype and Messenger NOT to run at Startup. In short, try to keep as little as possible running while you are gaming. You may even want to turn off your AVG while you are gaming. You can wait until after the game launches so that it is running while updates come in (if there are any) but otherwise it isn't needed when gaming unless you are doing other things online (which I've already indicated is not good for gaming). When you can upgrade to a better system, sure, you might be able to run all those things in the background, but for now let's just leave them off. Or just use your phone for you FB, Twitter and other needs. -
Odd. I went to the nVidia site and selected your video card and OS and that was what it came up with. Not sure why it gave you that message.
Although, when I run through it now, it gives me the same link that Eislor has in his post. Very odd.
EDIT: And if you like the avatar, you should try the arc that stars most of them. A Day with the South Texas Knights. Arc ID 42969. -
DXDiag does nothing for us. We want CoHHelper and HiJackThis logs.

Update your video drivers here as they are about 3 1/2 years out of date.

Did anyone on the team have an AE mission in their mission list?
I'd recommend sending a PM to Arbiter Kim with as much information as you can. Include player names, globals if you have them, date, approximate time, server, etc. The more details the better.
