Please enlighten me as to where I'm crying 'DOOOOM'?

I'm all-for this change! I really am! I'd be happy with any change that brought us new, or polished content that would improve our overall gaming quality. Whether it be a zone revamp, graphical update, or more levels.

But I think that it's fair to call this exactly what it is; progress beyond 50 that will make content 50 and below easier than it currently is for those advanced levels. You can call that however you'd like: Incarnate Level X, Level 60, whatever. The final idea is that it will be raising the 'Level Cap' in some form. Just because your enhancements still fit and your contacts still call you doesn't change this.
  2. I love how people so previously adamant about raising the level cap are now clamoring that this is some sort of divine work.

Yes, if you want to train for your 2nd and 3rd degree black belt, it's still a black belt, but it's still much stronger. You're still more powerful, and to delude yourself would be asinine.

I won't be surprised if the devs will introduce new IOs for incarnates. A Level 10 Incarnate will become the new 50.

You can call this whatever you'd like, but it is raising the level cap. And you know what? I like it. A great deal.
The only way this WOULDN'T be raising the level cap would be to have powers no stronger than we already have, having the Hero/Villain doing no more damage than before, etc etc... Basically, giving them a few more power choices and nothing else.

But then again, this is all just speculation, I confess. I'll have to wait and see for what incarnates really offer. Pure speculation, muddled by the manipulation of a speculative opinion. Nothing more.

    Animation!

    Much /signed.

I get tired of my Hero falling in the same exact way time after time. Even some ragdoll physics would be awesome.

  5. This entire topic annoys me; people getting upset over the changes made in the stride of progress just because they've taken some matter far too personally.

    To an extent?

First off, we'd need to establish the difference between the two branches: What would the purpose of A be and B be?

Let's say you wanted Stone Melee divided into Tree A, which uses the Stone Fists and a stone body in order to slow and snare enemies while dealing a good amount of DoT, while Tree B is the Stone Hammer is made for Smashing DPS pure and simple.

    So, you'd have a Slow&DoT/DPS set-up.
No, it wouldn't completely rip off Controllers' Stone Control, but it would borrow some ideas from it, like helping to give the user some crowd control over enemies. This means, over all, it would be more of a tank build for major AoE tanking.

It really depends on what the different branches are made to do.

(Admittedly for them it's just so you don't have two copies of the same power, as opposed to being "branch related," but still.)

Realistically, I'd expect to see this sort of thing added into a new set as opposed to "back-ported" to old sets. The idea itself, though, isn't too far off some of what we see elsewhere.
I'd love to see it tested out in some newer powersets, but I'd like it to find it's way in a retroactive way.

For example, let's take an imaginary powerset, Water Melee, shall we?

One one side, you could have a branch that involves punches and kicks with an aquatic twist; this branch embodies a single-target style with a great deal of utility, including a stun, a Drain Health power, and maybe even a summon power that would increase the damage of your water based attacks, maybe even something to give you a few moments of stealth after hitting.
On the other branch would be the Water Spear branch that would take the form of Multi-Target DPS. You'd have things like a short-reach, targetted AoE like Lightning Rod, you'd have your PBAoE, your cones, your thrust power like Headsplitter and such, but you'd get the feel of it- Multi-target DPS all the way; low utility. You'd have no summon, no drain health, no nothing but a lot of good, raw power.

This is the general feel I'd like to get; embody two different play styles in a single powerset. The trouble is modifying something in a way the community wouldn't lose it's balls over.

Precisely, but I'd like to see the other 'trees' not completely blocked out like in SoAs.

Again, the biggest problem is whether or not to allow selection from both trees.

Different effects. This is a prototype that I'd like to test to begin with.

In the end, I'd like to have completely different powers, but the Elemental/Weaponry sets are a strange beginning.

For example, Controllers? Give the options of choosing some other form of control instead of a summon or some single-target holds instead of multi-target, or vice versa.
  10. The Suggestion: Make Fiery Melee into a branch-style powerset to give it diversity!

The Reason: Because branching powersets could be a wonderful resource to add flavor to different characters and/or different builds. It adds a much deeper level of customization to the character and their play style.

Why Fiery Melee?!: We all need to start somewhere. Why not?

Branching System?! What kind of a game do you think this is?!:

When people think of 'branching', we think to games like D&D on the old tabletops, perhaps, or other MMOs that we're so adamant about staying away from to preserve the individuality of the game and the familiarity that our players feel while playing the game. There's nothing wrong with this until it begins to hinder progress because of the vocal minority, but that's an entirely different thread entirely.
Branching won't be the end of the 'Fiery Melee we all know and love', in fact, it will expand it to make it more friendly to those around!

So, what could possibly be added that the community would agree on? How do you make a radical change amongst a community that goes into a small uproar over the most meager of changes? The answer is a simple comparison I made in MSPaint:
    http://i643.photobucket.com/albums/u...SiggyModel.png

Now, as you'll see, there are branches, but they get back to things like Build Up/Confront/Breath of Fire. This is pretty important, considering those powers are relatively staple. But let's get some raw facts, shall we?

    What stays the same:
Powers will still do the same amount of damage (Moderate/Minor, etc.), they will still have the same area of effect, they will still be */Fire damage and they will be available at the same level ranges.

    What changes:
Some powers have Smashing/Fire while others have Lethal/Fire, some powers will have their secondary effects altered to give the sets a different appeal.
For instance, Fiery Melee might add a few stuns to make it closer to Martial Arts with a twist, while the Fiery Blade might utilize the DoT effect much more.

    The problems:
There are problems, who would argue that?
    1. Let them choose both branches?!
-- I'd lean towards 'no', myself, but I see a number of people who like having Fire Sword/Circle alongside with Cremate/Incinerate. I don't see the community endorsing a change that would force them to re-choose some of their own powers from what they currently are and are comfortable with.

    2. Too similar to others?
-- I'd like to think that the Fiery Melee hand attacks are pretty unique, in that they would have the authenticity of being new powers with a kick to them (literally). But what about people who say "Just take Martial Arts and get Fiery Aura?" I don't have an answer for the people who will insist that the sets are too similar (despite the differences.)

    3. Proliferation?
-- It would take a damn long time to proliferate this to the point where it would be feasible to introduce Live. Imagine if the original powersets (for those of you who still have your original Game Manuals) just had these? It would take a long, long time to get everything done, don't you think?

But as it is, this is a ROUGH DRAFT of an idea. I present you, the community, this idea to tear apart at your leisure. Thanks!
  11. Sigium

    Old issues

    /NOOOOOOOooooooooo

CoH is a game that is so staunchly opposed to 98% of all progress by the community that the idea of taking AWAY some of that and essentially relying on old, outdated content just escapes me for words. No. Nay. Nada. Not a chance. No such thing.
  12. Alright, alright, so let's cut to brass tacks with the idea then, shall we?

Your illusions take on the same form as you? Awesome. Which ones?

Does Phantom Army? How 'bout the Phantasm? Or the Spectral Terror? It'd suck to think that you couldn't customize one without them all.

And why does only Illusion Control get this? Why can't I make an Ice Sculpture of myself instead of Jack Frost? Or something along those lines?

The point is that when it gets down to the bare coding? Sure, I'd LOVE to see more customization options for anything summonable, but it's always gonna have to follow the SCR. The developers can't allocate resources they don't have to a power that doesn't really need any changes.
  13. This entire thread strikes me as overly-controlling to a point of neurosis. It is a cognitive dissonance, to me, how someone can be so awe-struck at the reality that they will be fighting enemies of their own level or-- dev forbid-- +1 con.

I don't support this suggestion simply because it seems so overly unnecessary. If your idea of 'hard' is to fight even-level minions, then there may be some problems beyond the game.
  14. Yes to:
    - Electric Mastery - Tankers
    - Darkness Mastery - Tankers
    - Electric Mastery - Scrappers
    - Pyre Mastery - Scrappers
    - Arctic Mastery - Defenders
    - Radiation Manipulation - Blasters
    - Poison - Corruptors

    Everything else can wait.
  15. Been asked about before; no.

Frankly, the idea of making clones of yourself sounds like a Defender/Healer's worst nightmare.

Reading the book allows you to run a mission where your character model, skill bar, equipment, and stats are all replaced by those of the hero whose story you're playing. Successfully completing the mission gives you a bonus and a selection from a list of equipment themed after either the hero or someone/thing in the mission you completed.

It's also repeatable, so you could for example deck yourself out in Tengu armor with Tengu-themed weapons after running the mission about the peace conference with the Tengu a few times.

tl;dr: Yes, I think it would be an interesting thing to have.
Actually, Fleet, I was thinking of the same exact game, the same exact interface, with the only change being that your character is replaced by the Signature Hero/Villain's, as are your powers.

The only 'reward' I could see would be gaining a badge or two.
  17. Disclaimer: This post is NOT to be taken as a suggestion! It is a simple clarifying question that I'm posting to make the community think about it for a bit.

If you had the option to play as signature Heroes along their storylines, would you? Would you like to take command of Blue Shield for his fight with the Clockwork King? Control Statesman along his campaign to bring justice to Paragon? Back Alley Brawler's hardened campaign against superadine (or whatever he's against?)

Would you willingly enter an interface not unlike MA to play a series of instances in which you'd control that signature Hero or Villain for better or for worse?

Maybe Atlas? With a goal of surviving just long enough? Or Scirroco with the goal to become possessed in the end?

Would you play the roles of those that, rather than triumph, are memorable because of their defeat?

I ask this because this wonderful community is very lore-focused on all of the Heroes/Villains. It knows what's what and how it got to that what, and it's got a big hard-on for the stories of the memorable stuff.
But then again, it also values it's own players; the Rouge Angle of Satin and Darkfrost wouldn't want to lose their place in Paragon City, that's for sure. Would controlling someone who wasn't them even be worth it?

I ask this glorious community if they would want to play such a thing; the tales of new characters and thensome? How many people would really be interested in this?
  18. Some things I'd like to also mention:

My blaster has never been 'feiry', nor 'firey'. People who assume this make me want to make them fiery.

Comas, however useful, should, in most case, such as this, only be used, as I've stated, in careful, considerate moderation.

If a king as an 'air' to the throne, his heir might be annoyed.

    Apostrophe's should be' used spa'rsely.''''

And finally; if a word ends in 'k' or 'ck', the plural form is NEVER 'x'.
  19. I'd like my custom group added; Heresy.

Who are they? A group of mutants that believe in mutant superiority (I suppose you could compare them to Magneto and the brood.) However, their leader, 'Heretyk' is a mutant also possessed by an entity of darkness. There's a ton of twists and turns that makes it fun.
  20. I'm on board with the 'play for fun, dammit!' boat.

I could easily re-roll my main as a Brute and do significantly more damage than I would as a Scrapper... But I'm not that big a fan of Furylock. Scrapperlock is where it's at for me.

    Do multiple Trip Mines count?

Cause if they do I was able to take out a Ballista in one shot.
This, and Crystal Titan's special attack. How lovely it is to do around 2,600 damage PLUS a second 1,300 damage (these are wild estimates, by the way) to ignore the one-shot code.
  22. I'll be one of those that agrees with CO's costume creator in MANY aspects. Allow me to break them down:

    1. City of Heroes
    - The facial selection means that we get to have more than a single face, which provides a VAST number of improved possibilities.
    - We not only can select the texture of our costumes, but the overlaying mesh of graphics and/or augmentation for the texture-specific meshes.
    - Our creator receives many FREE updates, rather than having +60% of all updates purchasable in an e-currency store.
    - We allow a high amount of weapon customization, and have at least 85% of our costume pieces clearly labeled and categorized.
    - Our power customization is simply awesome; most powersets have the ability to be very detailed. While this isn't ALWAYS the case, it's very nice to have.

    2. Champions Online
    - Their facial construction, when dealing with dimensions of the face, is hard to compete with in many aspects. The selection of only one face limits this, however.
    - While they may not have as many texture/mesh combinations as we do, Champions uses shading to make their textures come to life and appear more realistic.
    - The ability to customize things like eyes really stuck out to me; these little details make HUGE impacts; just like the Walk power, or shadows.
    - The simple choice to allow asymmetrical costumes. I'll never forget how much fun I had making someone who was half-white and angelic and half-black with a demonic theme.
    - Things like having swords, sheaths, guns mounted on your back and thensome was just incredible. I renewed my subscription just to test them out.

    And now for the negatives:

    1. City of Heroes
    - Let's face it; this is a veteran MMO that's been on the market for nearly 6 years, and it's just now getting a graphical update. Adding things like a better polygon count might be too little too late.
    - There are no available backpacks, leg/shin guards, (extensive) asymmetrical gear, and thensome. It makes the creator feel a bit limited.
    - There are a total of 2 color choices; Primary and Secondary. Upgrading to CO's choice of having 4 would give a much better experience for me.
    - Many pieces are held back from the players due to thematic concerns and clipping issues. I can understand hesitation, but I think the community would have a lot of fun.
    - We still use mittens and slippers. I understand BAB's concern for those running low-tier computers, but there comes a point where you need to bite the bullet to appease the majority.

    2. Champions Online
    - There's only 1 face! Yes, there are a number of different 'styles' to wear your face, like 'Guant' or 'Chubby', or even 'Stern', but I only see these polar certainties; you're either Rambo, Obese, or Ancient.
    - Some things are just so very blown out of proportion that it becomes ridiculous; Gundam-like costumes make me wonder if this game was just made so players could have the ability to plagiarize.
    - While there are a lot of great costume pieces, they are greatness surrounded by sub-par, and mediocrity. I look at some pieces and want to laugh at anyone who could find a use for them.
    - I'm a fan of giving things to players with tons of freedom, but even that was stretched with the amount of clipping issues seen abroad.
    - The 'C-Store'. Never have I been so furious with a company than the C-Store, whose only goal seems to be to nickel-and-dime the playerbase at every corner. "We got new costumes! Buy 'em now!"
  23. I'm all for this idea as long I get one thing:

The Assassin's Strike must include the club being brought back behind the head in a very cartoon-ish manner... Think Daffy Duck, when trying to nail Bugs Bunny with a baseball bat from behind a corner: leaning back, back, back, baaaaack, and then- WHAM!

    He hits a bear.
  24. Give them Ninja Run.

    Problem AWESOME!

this could really add to the immersiveness of AE arcs. I will take it a step further and say that we should have this added to the creation system, in other words, let an arc designer create an costume that you wear inside the mish, if you choose to. Could be used for things like "here, strap on this device, it'll protect you"

    My two cents
Absolutely not. There are some missions that take control away from the player's costume via disguises; Freakshow, or Arachnos. Allowing others to do the same on a whim would NOT happen.
Any and all arcs would not require you to wear a particular piece, nor would they be allowed to force any piece of your costume to change.

And I'm not even going to get into all the "naked" skins and other questionable material. I'm talking about the utter FAIL that systems like this produce, even when moderated, which such a thing cannot and will not be.

I've seen the user-side mods on things like UT2003. Yes, there were a few (VERY few) good ones, which eventually made it into the Developers' Choice bonus pack, but the vast majority were just utter crap. I remember seeing a Duke Nukem skin that was just Brock with clow-style flat colouring over his armour plates, and that's the mild stupidity.

Some people hold the Architect to be some kind of next step in MMO evolution, but to me it's just a cesspool for bad fan fiction, and I'm saying that as someone with two story arcs in it. I did my best to try and dredge something interesting out of it, but unless I'm specifically asked by specific people to review a specific story arc (which have mostly been pretty good) and instead try to look through them at random, I keep hitting up horrible arcs. I've even tried the Developer's Choice arcs, but I'm starting to think they just pick the arcs they think are funny, and even the ones that weren't I couldn't really get behind.

With the limitations on tools in the architect, the limitations on size and location and the fact that this is fan-made really killed the thing for me. It's a LOT of work to make a decent arc, and I've already seen that it's more work than many authors are willing to commit to. There is greatness in there, but it's not worth dredging through the much to find it.

If you want to keep this suggestion to just the architect, then fine. Easier to just avoid it entirely that way. But if you want to dump these things in the player character creator, then no. I do not want it spammed with everyone's idea of "cool." There's a reason Paragon Studios hire professional graphic designers.
That's quite a mouthful, Sam (that's what she said.) However, while you may find yourself unable to get behind arcs, you may find yourself in a minority here. CoH isn't UT2003, it's not some other game, it's simply City of Heroes, and I'm sure many of the developers wouldn't mind further tapping into the potential of the community.
Yes, Paragon Studios has professional graphic designers, and they do not NEED to rely on the community, but I honestly think that, based on how much people just enjoyed Architect in one way or another, they would have a great deal of fun with this.
Not only fun, but Architect was a huge milestone, like it or not. It put City of Heroes back on the map on a market where it had faded substantially. It was a boost of players, of utilities, and a general consensus of fun amongst the community.
