Would You Play This?

Disclaimer: This post is NOT to be taken as a suggestion! It is a simple clarifying question that I'm posting to make the community think about it for a bit.

If you had the option to play as signature Heroes along their storylines, would you? Would you like to take command of Blue Shield for his fight with the Clockwork King? Control Statesman along his campaign to bring justice to Paragon? Back Alley Brawler's hardened campaign against superadine (or whatever he's against?)

Would you willingly enter an interface not unlike MA to play a series of instances in which you'd control that signature Hero or Villain for better or for worse?

Maybe Atlas? With a goal of surviving just long enough? Or Scirroco with the goal to become possessed in the end?

Would you play the roles of those that, rather than triumph, are memorable because of their defeat?

I ask this because this wonderful community is very lore-focused on all of the Heroes/Villains. It knows what's what and how it got to that what, and it's got a big hard-on for the stories of the memorable stuff.
But then again, it also values it's own players; the Rouge Angle of Satin and Darkfrost wouldn't want to lose their place in Paragon City, that's for sure. Would controlling someone who wasn't them even be worth it?

I ask this glorious community if they would want to play such a thing; the tales of new characters and thensome? How many people would really be interested in this?

As a console game offshoot of City of Heroes, yes, provided it had good controls.

As an addition to the current game, not likely. I've heard a couple devs complain about piloting signature characters. Basically, it's not fun because the powers are balanced wrong for being a player - the signature characters are meant to be fought against.

But a well done console could wasily spawn a few sequels.

This proposition reminds me a lot of the "Bonus Mission Pack" in Guild Wars. If you've bought the pack (because, since GW has no subscription fee, they need add-on packs ), you've got access to 4 books about various characters in the game's history (and the weapons used by the 3 that used weapons).

Reading the book allows you to run a mission where your character model, skill bar, equipment, and stats are all replaced by those of the hero whose story you're playing. Successfully completing the mission gives you a bonus and a selection from a list of equipment themed after either the hero or someone/thing in the mission you completed.

It's also repeatable, so you could for example deck yourself out in Tengu armor with Tengu-themed weapons after running the mission about the peace conference with the Tengu a few times.

tl;dr: Yes, I think it would be an interesting thing to have.

I could see this.

Actually, Fleet, I was thinking of the same exact game, the same exact interface, with the only change being that your character is replaced by the Signature Hero/Villain's, as are your powers.

The only 'reward' I could see would be gaining a badge or two.

That would be more awesome then a RTS EQ.

No, and I wouldn't even consider it. This game's chief selling point is the ability to play MY characters as I envision them. What reason would I have to want to play other people's pre-fab characters at all? It completely negates the whole point of the exercise. You know, we tend to take it for granted, but every day I remind myself that what I am playing which looks and plays so well is not someone else's construct that I'm just given. This is MY character as I designed it, as I made it as I envisioned it. No other game, not even Champions Online, gives me that. Trading it for the ability to play someone else's character, specifically since I'm not as inspired by the big-name characters as I am by my own, doesn't fit into this world view.

And for another thing, being yanked out of my layout, build and power choices is NOT FUN. I have very particular tastes, and I always go a long way towards tailoring my game to how I prefer to play it. Running a signature character with an entirely different layout, power selection and with powers I don't actually know... I don't think that's such a good idea.

And, really, do I REALLY need to be reminded yet again that my characters will never be on the same level as the signature heroes? I can pretend I'm high and mighty by beating up -1 EBs, but playing them as AVs "as they are meant to be" just doesn't sit well with me.

Basically, the game's key selling point is that it's about ME. I'd rather not fiddle with that.
