Quote:When I get asked to provide my own question (such as with NCSoft), I put down the following question (one detail removed to protect my account, naturally): What is X's middle name?I always pick security questions with answers that don't change, something like "where were you born" rather than "what's your favorite book?" Of course, I also try to pick questions where there's only one way to answer it. So actually, "Where were you born" isn't really a good choice either, because I wont' remember if I answered just the city or the city and state--and did I abbreviate the state or spell it out? Fortunately, I made good choices for my CoH security questions and had no trouble answering.
X is a roleplaying NPC that I created in 1993, and the middle name of that character is stored indelibly in my head. There are perhaps three people in the world who would be able to guess it, and it has an unusual spelling.
The trick with questions like this is to choose something that simply cannot change. Like "Favourite colouryear born" to me would always be "Black1975" (I have never used this, by the way). Or how about "First 10 char of LotR, no spaces": "WhenMrBilb". Still, everyone is different, but there are lots of ways to avoid problems in the future.
Quote:My question is, why do we now have to agree to the terms of service again at the login screen? I know it's only one additional step that takes a second and I'll probably get used to it in no time, but don't I already agree to all that at the launcher? -
Currently playing: Pathfinder campaign with 2 GMs (of which I'm one, and we trade off every 3-6 weeks).
Owned:
D&D (Red, Blue, Green, Black and Gold boxes)
AD&D 1E
AD&D 2E
D&D 3E
D&D 3.5E
D&D 4E
Star Wars D6
Star Wars d20 (Original, Revised and Saga Editions)
SpaceMaster 2E
SpaceMaster: Privateers
RoleMaster 2E
RoleMaster Standard System
Middle Earth Role Playing
Battletech/MechWarrior (2E and 3E)
Buffy
GURPS
Alternity
Vampire: The Masquerade
Mutants & Masterminds 2E (waiting for 3E to be available)
DC Adventures (got that 2 days ago)
Shadowrun (1E, 2E and 3E)
... and probably a few more that I can't remember, but my wife asked me to not bother trying to think of all of them.
I've played Twilight 2000 and Marvel Superheroes, but don't own them.
For AD&D 1E, 2E, 3E and 3.5E, I own (I believe), every single general rulebook and all of the Forgotten Realms setting material (not including adventures), and a smattering of stuff from other settings.
I cut my RPing teeth on the old red box in the mid 1980's, and haven't looked back since.
More recently, I ran a successful online Mutants & Masterminds game over IRC that only floundered because I struggled with management as GM (but I learned A LOT doing it). I fully intend to pick that up again, using the 3E rules. -
Thanks for the clarification, Shat, and yep, it does sound like F)
For my own "Why play a God?"
I have two "God" characters, one of whom is so disconnected from the source of his power while on Primal Earth that he's really nothing more than a powerful mortal, so he's very much a guy who remembers being a god, but isn't one in-game - this affects his behaviour and attitudes, and sometimes gets him in sticky situations because he can't do all of the godlike things he's used to being able to do.
The other is far more fun, for me, and has an extremely convoluted and confusing backstory (and seriously needs a character rename, actually), as s/he is an ascended being who really isn't used to being a god. (And since her ability to affect reality is so new and unknown to her, she really can't do very much.) Her story is all about exploring the confusion and disconnection caused by suddenly gaining a certain type of cosmic power (if severely restricted in her current incarnation). Her most common complaint is "why would anyone want this job?"
Ultimately, it all boils down to stories. Interesting characters to explore certain aspects of the human condition.
As for Demons/Devils/Angels, I have one toon who is a 'reformed' succubus. She was forcibly reformed by "God Number One" mentioned above, and cares deeply for him, but a few years as a "good guy" hasn't managed to erase over a thousand years of demonic activity. She's a lot of fun because she's very much about redemption and how it's hard to learn to be a good person when your entire existence has been about evil.
It all comes back to story, every single time: Do I have something interesting to explore with this character? If not, I won't play them much, or they'll be a bit-character who hardly ever sees the light of day (and since I play my main far more than any other toon, that means secondary characters hardly ever get a look in). -
Quote:I have got to ask, because otherwise this will bug me. Does this meanNamely, being able to tear the soul from an unsuspecting victim.
a) Being able to rip the soul out of any victim that has one?
b) Being able to rip the soul out of any victim that has one, provided that they are unaware ED means them harm?
c) Being able to rip the soul out of any victim that has one, provided that they are unaware that ED is a demon?
d) Being able to rip the soul out of any victim that has one, provided that they are unaware of ED's soul-ripping ability?
e) There is one poor person somewhere in all of the realities that ED is able to rip the soul out of whenever he wants? -
My main used to be the leader of my one-man-band SG (okay, two or three if we count my darling wife and the prestige monkeys of a friend).
When he was a Hero, he was SG leader.
When he became a Vigilante, he was still the SG leader and had base access.
When he became a Villain, he lost SG leadership and lost base access.
Now he is a Rogue, he still does not have SG leadership, and he cannot access the base.
When he becomes a hero again (and I persuade my wife to be nice to me), he will be SG leader once more, and have full base access.
Throughout this, though, he has remained a member of the SG, is showing on the SG roster as a member, and has retained his Prestige Earned.
I really can't think of a better way to explain it than that. -
Sacrifice a goat (or any appropriate minion) to the great Goddess of CoH Machinima that is Dark Respite (aka Samuraiko aka Michelle) and the knowledge will be passed down unto you.

Shimla Pinks, here we come...

Quote:Taking my fairly typical UK-centric (okay, England-centric) view of things, it partly depends what you mean by "venue".I agree with you that the lack of official Meet & Greets is an area of concern, and one that I would love to address, time and budget permitting.
Here's a question for the EU players, aside from something like GamesCom, what do you feel would be the most appropriate venue were something like this possible?
If you mean city location: Birmingham. It's about as central as you can get, with good transport routes by rail, road and air.
If you mean pre-existing event: Memorabilia has proven to be a hit with CoH players in the past.
If you mean actual down-to-earth "where to meet": The pub. -

Going to agree with the majority of posters here: I read pretty much any time, but between 8.00 and 11.00pm UK time I tend to actually be playing the game, and therefore too busy to read the boards. Having "Redname" availability during peak playing hours is really very good, so I'm also going to say that having someone during my forum-reading hours isn't essential by any stretch of the imagination.
And yet another cry for a server list merge. I am aware that there are potential technical difficulties, I am aware that there are potential issues with Global Names, but I also believe that those can be overcome by frank discussion and while there may be a few edge-cases where people aren't willing to compromise in some way, I think that the majority will be happy. List-merge just seems to be win/win for everyone - we're already on the same maintenance window, so the EU players won't notice any changes there, we have the same forum, the only thing we don't have is access to the same server list. By keeping the servers separate, it almost puts across the message "we don't want the EU players and the US players to be able to play together". I can assure you that the majority of us would love to play together.
Sure, there would be some odd blurring as EU players suddenly descend on Freedom and Virtue, but I suspect that Union would get an influx of US roleplayers, for example, and even as a dedicated Unionite, I'm willing to acknowledge that Defiant has boatloads of mature, considerate, discerning players who would welcome a larger potential playerbase. I can't speak for the French or German servers, of course. -
Another good choice in Sharkhead is to wait for a miner's strike zone event and go pound a shedload of them with AoEs.

I have a long-term, ongoing project to create Mutants & Mastermind 2nd Ed statblocks for the various villain groups in CoH. So far I have a number of them done (including a passable Tyrant that probably needs a lot of work). Here's a teaser of some Clockwork that should pass muster.

Quote:While people may not understand your reasons for choosing to play the way you do, for anyone to be 'upset' by it is more than a little ridiculous. It's your cash, and your tournament is of no detriment to others. Keep going.I would like to make a public apology to everyone in the Forums. I was not aware that the nature of my prefered method of playing the game would cause confusion or upset so many people.
Quote:I know my methodology for playing this game is different and self-constraining. My reason for making the original post was an effort towards self-satire. I was poking fun at myself for being the way I am and inviting my fellow Forumites in to get a chuckle as well.
Quote:Apparently my attempt at humor has engendered the exact opposite response from some people and for that I am truly sorry. In the future I shall keep my humorist posts limited to the broader game and avoid my personal gaming preferences.
Thank you all and once more, sorry to those I have offended.
You are one of the (many) bright spots on these boards, but never doubt for one minute that you are a bright spot, and that some of us eagerly await your latest witticism with unconstrained glee.
Not to mention the somewhat casual interest I, personally, take in knowing (very generally) how your tournament is going in its current form.
Never, ever doubt that you are a welcome part of ths community, and never, ever doubt that there are people who want to know what you want to tell us. Even if it's just me, I want to know. -

Steelclaw is the KING, no, EMPEROR, no, GOD of taking what he's given and finding ways to have fun with them, by setting his own rules.
The Tournament really should go down in history. -
While playing on my high-level blaster (my main) I've noticed that I can kill Lieuts easily with my Tier 1 & 2 attacks, even while held, thanks to the 12.5% base damage boost and Defiance 2.0 stacking damage buff, whereas with Defiance 1.0 I was frequently dead myself and utterly unable to use any of that sweet, sweet 400% Damage buff because I was too busy cursing "HELD" on my screen and praying for a Break Free.
Do I like being able to solo Malta, now? Yes.
Did I avoid Malta like the plague, if I was solo, before Defiant 2.0? Yes.
Conclusion: Defiance 2.0 has widened my enjoyment of the game.
So, my response to this is (even at the risk of getting a telling off from the mods):
/jranger -
Malice is spot on with his revised syntax: essentially, the '/bind g' part tells the game to bind what follows to the g key, and the bit in "s is the command you want it to execute. The "-marks are needed because the power name has a space in it, because otherwise the game treats a space as the end of an instruction.

Italian Super-News Spotlight, Monday 7 Feb 2011
Super-Stud, or Super-Sneak?
This reporter was thoroughly shocked earlier today when she saw, appearing out of thin air, three Super-powered beings. Not hugely surprising, you might think, but it gets far more interesting when you learn that they were the fashion icon Ellie Stoneberg (Tiger White), Doctor Richard Huntington (Shadowe), and Shanna Connell (Fea), dropping in on Venice.
All reports suggest that Huntington and Connell are a happily 'together' couple, which begs the question of what they are doing appearing in one of our most romantic cities with another woman in tow? Is the Huntington-Connell relationship in need of some spicing up?
Also, this reporter has to wonder if their visit was a secret, or if they actually went through customs to get here - unlikely, I must admit, since all of my research has found no hint that they came into the country by commercial flight, and a quick check at Paragon International indicates that Huntington's company jet is still there.
So, one man, two women, Venice, and a lot of secrecy and sneaking around - the only conclusion I can reach is that we're looking at a new threesome, who are trying to hide their relationship from their friends. -
Glad to be of assistance. After I19 launched and I got enough Shards to make my first Alpha Boost, I spent AGES (well, okay, a good 10-15 minutes), cursing that it didn't seem to work. So I started from scratch, brought up the window, checked that I had converted shards, checked that I had crafted the blasted thing and then... I spotted the equip tab.
D'OH! -
Only thing I can think of is to make sure you equipped your Musc Total Rad Revamp.
-
Petition anyway. At the very least the GM's should be able to check the server logs for the player name of whoever dropped the portal at that location.
And yes, it's amusing to think of it in an abstract way, but I can well imagine it being VERY annoying when it happens to you. -
Somehow I think this might be pointed in my direction :P
I know it's not, though the discussion in the GG thread recently may have prompted it.
That said, why is Richard Huntington one of the ultra-rich, when he has frankly awesome superpowers?
The answer there is because it fit the character background. I wanted an independently wealthy, but fundamentally lonely, scientist who interacts with people because of his powers and his deceased father's moral lessons. At first glance it seems that he has everything he needs, but he has learned that he does not have the thing he wants (I'm painting this from the perspective of the original concept, not his current social situation), and the challenges he faces are as much about him confronting his loneliness and desire for companionship, friendship and love, as about him being able to blow up cars.
I needed a foil for him, which is his sister, Samantha, and I needed them to be on good terms. Since I'd already determined that Richard was independently wealthy as a result of family money, she needed to be just as wealthy. For her, though, it's almost irrelevant - while Richard uses the money he has, Sammy is flighty, frivolous, carefree, and, again in contrast to Richard, friendly and sociable.
The tragedy is that despite all of their riches, (and originally unbeknownst to Richard), Samantha is dying of radiation poisoning as a result of the accident that triggered both of their powers - the money doesn't help, because you can't buy your way out of death.
At the very core, then, the combined Richard/Samantha story is very much that money cannot buy happiness. -
Union and Defiant aren't US servers.
Still, I hope Damz appreciated the EoE's.
