There's a post in the announcement sections about the new security levels on the NCSoft Master Accounts.

If I remember right, there are instructions on what to do if you can't remember your security questions.

This was not one of their better strategies. (I suspect this is across the board because of problems with Lineage account hacking, but what the heck do I know?) I got my unlock codes and Unique IDs and all that stuff seven years and five computers ago. Sometimes files got copied to the new drives, and sometimes they didn't. In this case, when I needed serial numbers, I'd just log into account support. I have no way of knowing what the me of seven years ago was intending as the answer to my unique password hint question, so I'm stuck until Support deigns to respond.

What a lovely system, and so much warning ahead of time!

It's the NCSoft master account, so it is System wide.

And on top of that, phone support is available for five hours a day. Five hours a day? Even banks are open longer than that. What ever happened to eight-hour work days?

Well I couldn't remember what my clue means, or I keep getting that little "type the words as you see them" security thing wrong. I wish the system would at least tell you what you were getting wrong.

No clue. But you know, you can just refresh and have it give you a new Captcha until you get one you're sure you can read. That's by far the easiest way to deal with that problem, IMO.

its a shame only about 10% of the things that it shows are fully readable. Everyone has rolled it out and its the bggest pain ever having to sit there hitting refresh until you occasionally see something where not a single character needs guessing at.

Captcha probably doesn't know. You're helping humanity by transcribing all of written English into digital form.

The first 'word' is made by Captcha and the only one you're being tested on. The second word is an image from a written manuscript you're being 'asked' to transcribe. If you get the first word right, the system trusts you to transcribe the scanned word. They probably pass the second word on to many people, and if they agree, then it's a trusted transcription.

So, the second 'word', since it obviously contains the number '6', is most likely a three digit number: 162. Or, it's '162-'. Sometimes only context can give an accurate reading. And if people disagree or skip on it, it gets kicked to a human being to look it up and try to decipher it from context.

Man... I don't even remember doing a security question when I joined up, I hope I can remember it if/when the time comes. :P

Edit: to test, I just went and logged into my account. My questions were about the street I grew up on (not really, but it's an easy one for me to remember) and my dad's middle name, which is easy to spell. I guess I got off lightly compaired to others.

Contact support, telling them that you need your security question reset.

I was able to get it reset by giving my name, address, last 4 digits of a credit card used, DoB, and account name (I wrote that I didn't remember my codes). I sent it in yesterday afternoon, and when I woke up this morning I had an email waiting for me to reset the security questions.

I sent a support ticket that had my name, account name, date of birth and address. I even added my dad's to be sure since I sort of remember setting up some stuff under his name. It may be necessary, but waiting sucks.

Yeah, I finally figured out when I was getting into my daughter's account that she used my husband's birthday.

I didn't have any problem with the answers to the security questions, but I did have to experiment to determine how they capitalized them, since it's case sensitive.

Yeah I called them and it was pretty easy... they sent me a link I reset the secuirty question to something I would remember this time and it's all set

I always pick security questions with answers that don't change, something like "where were you born" rather than "what's your favorite book?" Of course, I also try to pick questions where there's only one way to answer it. So actually, "Where were you born" isn't really a good choice either, because I wont' remember if I answered just the city or the city and state--and did I abbreviate the state or spell it out? Fortunately, I made good choices for my CoH security questions and had no trouble answering.

My question is, why do we now have to agree to the terms of service again at the login screen? I know it's only one additional step that takes a second and I'll probably get used to it in no time, but don't I already agree to all that at the launcher?

And I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who has trouble with those Captcha things.

When I get asked to provide my own question (such as with NCSoft), I put down the following question (one detail removed to protect my account, naturally): What is X's middle name?

X is a roleplaying NPC that I created in 1993, and the middle name of that character is stored indelibly in my head. There are perhaps three people in the world who would be able to guess it, and it has an unusual spelling.

The trick with questions like this is to choose something that simply cannot change. Like "Favourite colouryear born" to me would always be "Black1975" (I have never used this, by the way). Or how about "First 10 char of LotR, no spaces": "WhenMrBilb". Still, everyone is different, but there are lots of ways to avoid problems in the future.

The answer to this is because of the upcoming move to the NCLauncher, which doesn't include a ToS acknowledgement.

While I agree, it's also a good idea to go with question/answer combos that can't be easily googled if someone connects your user name to your real name.

Sadly, the more static the response to the question, the more likely it could be discovered by other means. The best way would be to update the security question every now and then. But considering some of us haven't had to use our security question in 7 years, there hasn't really been much reminder that it exists in order to update it .

I believe this is part of the push to use the NCSoft launcher, which may or may not include the ToS as far as I know. I have no intention to switch until the existing updater is no longer supported. And it also catches those who skip the launcher with the -projectcoh tag.

There was one site I used to go to that used a horrible captcha - it wasn't one of those colourblind test ones, or this one that can be hard to read if you have 20/20 vision... It was just straight up text, but the font was such that you couldn't tell 'I' '1' or 'l' apart (likewise 0 and O), which meant that half the time it was random whether it would let you in or not.

Yeah, I've often used names of characters I created for roleplaying games as passwords. They're easy to remember (especially for a much beloved character) but aren't even real words and are completely unknown to anyone outside my group of gaming buddies.

I had a feeling it might have something to do with that, I did see the prompt to install the NCLauncher but didn't do it. I believe the NCLauncher has been around for a while already, but someone mentioned that you don't get the CoH announcements that appear with the CoH launcher if you use it. Is that still the case I wonder?
