It's nice to dream of the devs changing blaster nukes to be crashless but I don't think that's going to happen. Now this suggestion isn't for everyone, but one option that you can try is to roll up a Kin Corruptor. On a team you can easily self-buff to the damage cap, then nuke, pop a small blue and do Transference to regain a full blue bar. Corruptor damage cap is substantially lower than a blaster, but being able to nuke every single time it's up (and it'll be up a LOT with Siphon Speed boosting your recharge) is pretty damn fun.
A lot of folks who like playing blasters will absolutely hate playing a Kin. Speed Boost is an awesome but short duration buff, so you'll either be doling it out a lot or you'll be resented as a "bad kin" by your teammates. So caveat emptor. But if you can handle the playstyle, it's a great option if you wan to be a nuke-maniac. -
Utterly fantastic. Great job, D_R!

I haven't played an SD tanker, only an SD brute. So take this with a big grain of salt since the tanker version of SD has better base defense and higher base HP, which helps a ton. Anyway, I found that as a solo brute it was not so easy in the low levels; defense sets like SD and SR start off relatively squishier compared to many other sets. I ended up teaming a lot: a bubbler or Cold defender will make life great for you, easily putting you at the defense softcap. Once I leveled up and got more stacked defenses it was easier to solo. At level 50, now that I'm softcapped, soloing is a breeze. (It was almost absurdly expensive to softcap the brute but it's much much easier/cheaper to softcap an SD tank.)
As a tanker you'll be able to solo easily, the only question is how aggressive you'll be able to go on the difficulty settings.
My advice would be to go against your instincts and force yourself to invite a few teammates to make those early levels fly by faster. Blueside, the synergies are awesome because squishies generally have a hard time soloing in the lower levels and greatly desire to team with a tank. In return they'll usually bring tools to the party that will enhance your survivability. Everyone wins.
EDIT: I saw in the tanker forum you intend to farm with this character. SD/SS is a good choice since once you softcap you can start investing in recharge. The goal is to get Footstomp to recharge as fast as possible. Luckily you'll have lots of places to slot those LotGs.

Quote:I'm hoping that they use Going Rogue as an opportunity to completely revamp the Search window. As nice as your suggestions are, they'd lead to unsolicited tells to team leaders. So instead, I'd like to see the ability for a team lead to set a "Team Looking for More" flag, and then unteamed players could do a search on teams looking for more just like we can do a search on individuals now.The grayed names could be more beneficial if they also indicated team leader status (which others have posted), the current level of that character (aka the current SSK'd mission level), and team size (which could include looking for more, not looking for more, and full status).
These things could help in trying to join a team that is already active. I don't make a habit of doing this, but I have sent a tell to a grayed out name asking if they had any more room on their team.
I really want the Add Note stars to show up in the team search window. -
Quote:This is why we need an "advanced bid mode" option that would let us bid on a single IO or recipe but specify an acceptable level spread. Putting in multiple bids isn't a problem for most of the folks who frequent this forum but many players don't have enough Inf to cover a wide spread of bids.I've had level 32 Kinetic Combat IOs sit in my market trays for weeks even though Kinetic Combat is a desperately popular set among WP, Ice and Energy Armor characters. I listed them at fire sale pricing as well and not a nibble for 3 weeks. The difference between a level 32 and a max level 35, a mere .7% enhancement.

I read an amusing theory once. It posited that a time travel machine would never exist because if it was invented, eventually someone somewhere would use it to go back and interfere with the creation of the machine. So it would essentially never stay invented.

Quote:Your mention of the words "birds" and "confused" in the same sentence somehow triggered a reference in my noggin to this. The video starts off cool, progresses to "wow" then ends up in the Twilight Zone.So you're telling me it has something to do with birds? Now I'm even MORE confused!

Quote:Sometimes the challenge is orthogonal to the actual topic of the thread. In this thread the OP, BillZ, and myself noted the low player population right now. But none of us complained that we couldn't form a team. So the challenge (and the cartoon you posted) is simply off the mark.Generally the reaction to a post that alludes to low server activity amounts to a) accusations of doom-crying, b) reminders that servers have gotten upgrades, c) assertions that huge percentages of players are on /hide, and d) Westley doing some flavor of team challenge.

Quote:Amazing to see a vet admitting that player activity is low (I'd assert it's the lowest it's ever been). Generally the reaction to a post that alludes to low server activity amounts to a) accusations of doom-crying, b) reminders that servers have gotten upgrades, c) assertions that huge percentages of players are on /hide, and d) Westley doing some flavor of team challenge.I think "no signs of waning" is a bit overstated. For several months now, I've not seen Pinnacle's pop hit 1000. That's considering both sides. Granted, I have no idea what percentage of players run around hidden from searches like I always do.
But I do know it's been damn quiet in every zone. All the time.
I would hate to be a new player right now.
EDIT: Just logged in. 89 matches found blueside. 2 to 1 ratio has been mostly true forever. That means ~45 redside.
6PM on a night before many are off for 5 days. And Pinn's got less than 150 players not hidden.
When I've made observations in other threads about the remarkably low current population on Freedom, I've been strenuously assured that it must be a Freedom-only phenomenon and that other servers have literally experienced not even the slightest drop in player activity. /e shrug.
I'm hoping that we're just in a lull while folks wait for Going Rogue. -
Quote:I guess what we have to account for are different positions in the learning curve. If I hear someone bragging about their excellent build, I want them to share it. I've played the game enough years that I understand well how to personalize a build. I don't want to play 20 questions to tease out their pointers.No. Very no. Sharing a build is giving the man the fish.
Teaching him to fish is helping him to understand how to personalize a build.
On the other hand I can certainly understand, when a new player is asking for build advice, the reluctance to share a build that they'll slavishly copy without understanding the tradeoffs that build embodies. -
If you've worked hard on an unorthodox build, the best way you "can teach a man to fish" is simply by sharing it. I don't buy your reasoning at all.

To see an example of a nasty SS/SD build, look at ThugsRus's build in the Bruite guides. He first did an Elec/SD guide, then once he tried SS/SD he basically stripped his Elec/SD of IOs. He convinced me to do likewise. My SS/SD isn't as insanely expensive as his (his used purples, mine uses no purples) but was still by far the most expensive build I've ever done, primarily due to the Gladiator's Shield global defense IO. I got mine for about 300M and I nearly didn't pull the trigger because that was so absurdly expensive. Those same IOs have regularly gone for 2B since then. So in hindsight i guess I got a bargain.
Here's a link to an older post with my build in it. It's not exactly my current build, but close enough. Read the next few posts for some critiques of the build, and my responses. I'm not claiming it's an ultimate build but it's pretty damn strong. I've been very happy with it.
I also have a purpled Fire/Kin blueside that I have used for occasional farming. The brute is roughly the same speed. He kills faster, but I generally wait for mobs to clump around me for maximum Footstomp effectiveness so it ends up being a wash.
EDIT: one other thing that I don't think has been mentioned in this thread: normally farming is a solo activity but if you can duo farm with a Kin, a brute pulls well ahead of other ATs when it comes to Fulcrum Shift. A brute's damage cap is nearly double that of a controller's. -
Quote:I should put that link in a keybind. I especially appreciated the "your team must WAIT to attack" section. The most common pull mistake I see is the "reverse pull" where someone attempts to pull, then a teammate attacks the mob before they are close, the mob stops to fight back, and the rest of the team then runs to the mob to engage. It's often close enough that other members of the spawn notice the fighting and run to join. So instead of pulling, the team is getting pulled.

Quote:Just to be clear for anyone else reading this thread, this person had two separate problems: long load times and bad graphics. The cure for long load times was getting more memory (not graphics card memory, regular system memory). Getting a spiffy graphics card won't help with load times.I have the same worries with my computer because i am not techy at all. I had horrid load screen times(sometimes zoning would take 3-4 mins) and graphics were bad so i went from one gig mem and a graphics card nvidia 6150 to 3 gigs of mem and nvidia graphics card 9600 and it works alot better but im worried that with new graphics it will make me have to buy new card and more mem. I play at rec also just so my computer doesnt lag.

Quote:One key thing to realize: there are no eyeballs on the Storm Palace ring, just brutes and wisps IIRC. My Fire/SR Scrapper has farmed the Storm Palace numerous times. And as for the recharge debuffs, well, debuffs don't affect you if they can't hit.Dark has alot of the res you need in there to the damage types they do. Since the eyeballs hit threw def like it isn't even there.
So if you're looking for Storm Palace farming specifically and not any ol' arbitrary place in the Shard, my vote is for SR. -

I'm sure they turned off rep comments entirely because that was a simple configuration change in the forum software. But I would've preferred a different solution: allow optional comments for positive rep and disallow comments entirely for negative rep. It's enough that someone neg reps you; I haven't seen any comments in negative rep that made me go "Wow, insightful. That comment changed my opinion." Even though I didn't get any Perfect_Pain-style nasty comments, they were frustrating because half of them were based on misinformation, yet I was unable to engage in any dialog.
As others have said, though, the comments associated with postive rep are nice because you get the compliment across without derailing the thread with an empty "kudos" post.
I'm guessing my suggestion won't be implemented because it'd require some custom coding, and I assume that there are exactly zero coding hours budgeted for customizing the forums. -
Quote:If you were to create a Mission Architect virtual world that included the ability to change sides gradually by doing a series of missions, what would be the most exciting features you'd include in it?Please keep in mind that I won't be able to answer any questions regarding what we have planned for Going Rogue, though I can happily answer questions about techniques in Architect, different forms of narrative, etc. Just keep in mind that I'll have to remain silent about anything related to Going Rogue!

Quote:One of the strongest temp power pets is the Shivan. You get a temp power good for 5 uses. It's acquired outdoors in the Bloody Bay PVP zone, not in a normal mission. They're great when you're facing a tough Arch Villain (AV) that's giving your team a hard time.Oh ok thanks! That helps. But there are also was to get helpers through missions..?

One con puppy didn't mention about Willpower: horrible taunt aura. Don't expect to use your taunt aura to grab and hold aggro if you go WP.
Shields
Pros: Self damage buff/enemy debuff in Against All Odds. Huge damage AoE in Shield Charge. Grant Cover includes noticeably helps teammates (if they're close). If you can afford to soft-cap, high survivability.
Cons: Incredibly expensive to soft-cap defense. Weak defense debuff protection so cascading defense failures can happen fast if you're not quick to pop a purple.
Shields is a great choice if you are a min-maxer but for the average player I wouldn't recommend it. It's pretty squishy without serious investment in set bonuses. -
Quote:Posi has explicitly said it's about the imbalance of inf. If he thought that RP reasons made it mandatory, he'd say so. What possible reason would he have to lie about it? That makes no sense.I feel that the whole thing is being done for RP reasons more so than one faction makes more money than the other. They are just saying its money.
But since you brought it up, think about these questions:
1) If RP reasoning drives the fundamental structure of the market, how is it that alternate friggin' universes participate in the market? There's no RP explanation of how a player on Guardian can sell something to a player on Freedom.
2) If RP reasoning drives the structure of the market, please explain how we are paying and receiving inf at all. Think about what inf was originally asserted to be (literally reputation) and how it's evolved. Guess what: it's money. Any RP pretense that it isn't fell away a long time ago.
3) Observe an actual real life auction. Please tell me how you can tell that none of the goods was stolen. If the owners of Wentworths were dealing with black marketeers, heroes wouldn't know thus it can't be objected to on RP grounds. -
Yeah the key is using the "Show Posts" option. It should be made the default.

Don't get me wrong; I'd love to see a movie made out of my favorite game. But in the business world I've had many people pitch me ideas while asking for an investment in their brilliant, "can't miss" venture. They've often represented themselves as being much farther along than they really were. All I see here is a guy who bought the option, paid a writer to create a story outline, and is now shopping it looking for investors. For every story that gets greenlighted and funded, there are hundreds that get circulated and nothing ever happens. If DeSanto gets enough funding to begin production, then I'll consider it real.

I don't want to repeat or quote everything Fleeting Whisper has said in this thread. As usual, he's spot on. So I'll make an observation: Posi is a bright guy. I have a ton of respect for his game design acumen. The game has improved tremendously while he's been the head designer, and I am confident that GR is going to be awesome.
That said, his stated reason for not merging the markets is indefensible. And what's worse, it seems like his blind spot is causing a complex and awkward market mechanic to be implemented in GR. Beyond wasting programmer resources to prop up a bad idea, it just bothers me when an otherwise bright guy clings to a position that should be abandoned.
