What is the best build...

...to "farm" the Shadow Shard? Specifically the Storm Palace ring. I've already gotten a Fire/Regen Scrapper to 50, but he still gets trounced by the mobs there. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, of if it's just simply not a good powerset combo to face the Soldiers of Rularuu.

So... AM I doing something wrong, or is there a build that would be more "survivable" in the Storm Palace?

I would go with a Spines/dark for the shard

Dark has alot of the res you need in there to the damage types they do. Since the eyeballs hit threw def like it isn't even there. The shard creatures have recharge debuffs which is nasty for a regen so that may be why you regen is havng trouble. Dark has a heal in it's aresenal which is good.

Spines I would pick because it has some range to it some minus fly in impale and good AOE.

The Shadow Shard. Last thing in the game that's still hard for people.

Invuln tanks with significant IO'd up psi resist and def do OK. That's the best my wife and I could come up with, of what we've brought.

Usually there's ONE type of something that causes troubles. Like Wisps (with the Psi) for Invuln, or eyeballs for SR. (Well, everyone takes twice as much damage, but SR takes like ten times as much damage...)

Dark has a lot of resist to things that nobody else resists, so it may be a good choice. It'll stop the psi, it can heal with some frequency, although the Brutes may just squish you flat. . .

Shadow Shard's going to be hard no matter what you bring. Maybe granite tanks?

EDIT: I did surprisingly well with a FF/Elec defender in there, but it wasn't FAST. They hate end drain in the shadow shard. So some sort of Elec, maybe?

This is making INSANELY good sense. No wonder I'm having trouble.

What do you all think about a Fire/Dark?

I have a 50 spines/dk Wes I'll take him in there and test him out...get back to ya.

Ok after getting lost in there(first time in).I tried everything I could in lvl range and out, brutes are the weakness for /dark,it was more of a fight for survival then farming.Everything else was ok,overseers took alittle longer.

I wouldn't use /dark,spines was ok alittle too slow in my book for a farm but,I'm comparing my fire/kin speeds(so meh).Plus,my scrapper is frankenslotted and I still had some issues.Like constantly hittin heal, and acouple of rezzes. So hope this helps...

Recharge debuffs are murder on Dark Armor. Dark Regen is the lynchpin of DA survivability. Not having that heal up when you need it generally results in a pretty rapid faceplant. The only times I ever went down on my DA tank were after being hit by heavy -recharge.

Spewing up theory here: How about a Dark/Elec Scrapper? (or Elec/Dark Tanker I guess)

Elec has good resistance to Psi, that covers wisps.
Elec has abominably good resistance to Energy, that will laugh off Ranged attacks from Brutes and Eyeballs.
Dark Melee can help mitigate the pain from incoming smashing attacks with -tohit and the godly Siphon life.

Mmm, I want those powersets now.

Also, I seem to have had a lot of luck mobbing through hordes of Rularuu with my Ice/Fire Tanker. Everyone says this shouldn't be the case, but it is!

My softcapped BS/Dark waltzes through it with very little problem. The only time I drop is if stuff lands a few lucky hits in a row, or if I do something stupid. Spines/Dark would kill faster, but I'll take more survivability over increased kill speed any day, since the kill speed increase isn't THAT large.

A lot of Brutes at once is about the only thing that gives me trouble, and that's only if I miss with Parry more than once.

Panzerwaffen: The -recharge doesn't bother me that much. I have 3 layers of mitigation: Defense, Resistance (for what the defense doesn't prevent), and Dark Regen (which is not used that often due to the first two) One of the sword sets (Katana or Broadsword) would probably be a good bet for something like this.

My Claws/Regen can do it too, but he's nowhere near as good at it, and his build probably isn't as good as Catwhoorg's.

I can second this. My Dark/Elec brute is pretty darn sturdy against Rularuu. Makes some sense, since Electric Armor seems to be designed to be the anti-silver bullet set and Rularuu are trying to be the omni-silver bullet.

Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.

One key thing to realize: there are no eyeballs on the Storm Palace ring, just brutes and wisps IIRC. My Fire/SR Scrapper has farmed the Storm Palace numerous times. And as for the recharge debuffs, well, debuffs don't affect you if they can't hit.

So if you're looking for Storm Palace farming specifically and not any ol' arbitrary place in the Shard, my vote is for SR.
