My first character was a Super Strength/Invulnerability Brute named War Tusk. I played him quite a bit those first few weeks, but then he got shelved for a while as I created and played more and more alts. Every few months I'd log onto him and gain a level or two and then move on.
Just last month he finally hit 50! -
Quote:Yeah, I've often used names of characters I created for roleplaying games as passwords. They're easy to remember (especially for a much beloved character) but aren't even real words and are completely unknown to anyone outside my group of gaming buddies. When I get asked to provide my own question (such as with NCSoft), I put down the following question (one detail removed to protect my account, naturally): What is X's middle name?
X is a roleplaying NPC that I created in 1993, and the middle name of that character is stored indelibly in my head. There are perhaps three people in the world who would be able to guess it, and it has an unusual spelling.
Quote:The answer to this is because of the upcoming move to the NCLauncher, which doesn't include a ToS acknowledgement. -
I haven't rolled a new character in months, but that's only because I have so many alts that I made an agreement with myself to play existing characters for a while before starting any new ones.
However, I have played plenty of low-level characters lately. I went the incarnate route with a couple of my 50s when it was first introduced but haven't touched them for a few weeks now. There's still plenty of lower level content I haven't done, so I don't really need or want to focus on the incarnate content right now. It'll still be there when I finish with my lowbies.
Of course, it helps that I solo more than I team. I've always enjoyed soloing, so I've never really had to care too much what everyone else in the game is or isn't doing. So no peer pressure for me. -
I always pick security questions with answers that don't change, something like "where were you born" rather than "what's your favorite book?" Of course, I also try to pick questions where there's only one way to answer it. So actually, "Where were you born" isn't really a good choice either, because I wont' remember if I answered just the city or the city and state--and did I abbreviate the state or spell it out? Fortunately, I made good choices for my CoH security questions and had no trouble answering.
My question is, why do we now have to agree to the terms of service again at the login screen? I know it's only one additional step that takes a second and I'll probably get used to it in no time, but don't I already agree to all that at the launcher?
And I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who has trouble with those Captcha things. -
Quote:Just out of curiosity, what's wrong with contacts and standard missions?(With the exception of contacts and standard missions, I gave up doing those at Level 30)
Understanding why you don't like that type of content will make it easier for us to suggest content that you might like. -
Quote:I have a polar bear character named Professor Ursine who uses one of the montrous heads. With small ears, I think it looks fairly bear-like. But I assume you've seen that head, and its probably the one you think is ugly, so no help there.I am really surprised that the Animal Pack didn't come with Bear face.
Bear is such a common "creature". I've made tons of Bear-related characters and I was really hoping the pack would come with a default, nice-looking (or cute looking) Bear head.
I've tried Monstrous head. It looks UGLY but is that the closest I can get?
I was hoping I can make something like a Panda character to fit my Kung Fu stalker.
I don't have the animal pack yet, but I sort of expected it to come with a bear head. I'm surpised to hear it doesn't. Guess when I get the pack I won't need to bother reworking Professor Ursinie's look. -
Quote:I was thinking the same thing, but then I reread the first post and saw that the OP said he was playing a Dom who is still a villain. Unless he switched sides to hero, picked up some arcs, then switched back to villain, it doesn't seem like side-switching is the problem here.Apparently this is common for people who side-switched and have a lot of open story arcs on the side they left. There's a limit to open story-arcs you can have and side-switching won't close the ones you left on the other side.
I would say check inactive contacts for open arcs, but I don't think outleveled contacts go to the inactive list if they have open arcs, do they? -
Quote:Whoa, there's a big difference between not wanting to "team almost all the time" and being a "primarily solo player." There are also the players who like to team most of the time (just not "almost all the time") and players who like an even mix of soloing and teaming.Listened to an interview with Scott Hartsman (Worked on many online games starting in 1986, including Warcraft 2, everquest, EQ2, LOTRO and many others) earlier today, one line stood out to me. "Of every 100 people who come into your game, only 5 of them want to team almost all the time."
When 95% of your player base is primarily solo players, and the new core character advancement mechanic specifically excludes them, you have a problem.
I primarily solo myself, and I know there's quite a few of us, but I doubt anywhere even remotely near 95%. -
I earned 8 shards after soloing 17 missions, so the drop rates weren't too bad for me. Don't know if my experience is typical or not, though. According to Paragon Wiki, the drop rate is 1/1000 per minion, 1/150 per Lt. and 1/50 per boss. Based on that, if you play a 2-3 hours a day, I would think you could probably average more than 1 per day.

Quote:The article did list healing, buffing, debuffing, and dropping foes as all means to earning the rewards:Not knowing the mechanics I'm not sure how much of a win this is. How will the rewards differ for a player that spends a majority of their time buffing a 48 man team as opposed to a player with 3-5 AoEs? Think a non slacking Kin or Emp versus a Fire blaster.
The Kin or Emp is busy buffing/healing me which is a crucial part of the encounter/survivability, if I go around spamming Fireball and RoF will my rewards be greater?
Quote:We also want you to feel rewarded for participation, and want everyone to have an equal chance at getting a reward, whether you are healing or buffing or debuffing or using pointy things to make moving things fall down. -
That really stinks, but how do you know they did it on purpose just to grief you? Did they say or do something to confirm that? I have a couple of friends who play, and they live in the same house and play over the same network. For a while they had connection problems and would sometimes both disappear at the same time. I knew what was up, but others didn't.
Maybe they were screwing with you, but unless there's more to the story than you've said, I think you could give them the benefit of the doubt. -
Okay, good to know. From now on, I TRUST NO ONE! Although, really, my villains should already have long adopted this policy.

This weekend I ran the mission Stop Nemesis Attack from Black Scoripion. It's the last mission in the Destiny Raids arc, the one where you destroy the mole machines.
Because I was there to help Arachnos fend off Nemesis, I assumed at first that the Arachnos on the scene would be friendly. However, the first group of Arachnos I passed attacked me. With the exception of a few bane spiders that were bracketed in blue, most of the Arachnos on the map were hostile to me, including Black Scoripion and the other Patrons.
My initial thought was that it was a ruse and these Arachnos were actually automatons, but unlike the fake Arachnos soldiers I encountered earlier in the arc, these listed their faction as Arachnos, not Nemesis. Then I thought it was a trap set by Black Scorpion to pay me back for the betrayal mission (in every piece of dialogue, he reminded me he hadn't forgotten about that). But I don't know what beef Captain Mako and the rest had with me.
Afterwards, when I turned the mission in to Black Scorpion, he gave no explanation for the hostile Arachnos (nor even commented on how I had yet again given him a beat-down). I checked Paragon Wiki and found that it lists the Arachnos faction in this mission as "neutral."
Was this not working as intended? Is this a known bug? Are Arachnos always hostile in this mission, or was this random? It wasn't a big problem, in fact it actually made the mission more interesting, and fighting all four patrons in one mission was pretty cool, but now I'm curious about it. -
After unlocking my Alpha slot, I ran 9 missions without getting a single shard (then started averaging 1 shard per mission from the 10th mission on). I thought that was a pretty bad dry spell, but I was mostly running level 50 tip missions solo, so that wasn't so unlikely. I've never heard of anyone running multiple task forces and coming away empty handed on shards.

Quote:If that is indeed what you were saying, I don't think there's any room for argument. At this point, I beleive everyone including the OP is now aware that he overlooked a crucial step.Wait.
Firstly, no one is accusing him of hiding anything. What I'm saying is that he overlooked a ridiculously crucial step: he already earned the WTF rewards.
However, this is the comment I was responding to:
Quote:They said they unlocked their alpha, slotted it, and ran the TF. In that order.
Crazy me, I thought they did those things in that order.
And without knowing the specific game mechanics before hand, I don't think the omission was really all that ridiculous. As far as the OP knew, the only flag that triggered the NoTW reward was whether or not that specific reward had been earned that week by that character. I imagine I might have thought the same thing had I not read this thread first. -
Quote:It sounds to me like that's exactly what he did, in that order. They said they unlocked their alpha, slotted it, and ran the TF. In that order.
Crazy me, I thought they did those things in that order.
What he left out of his original post was that he had also run the same TF this week prior to taking those three steps. I don't think he was deliberately hiding anything, I just don't think it occured to him that anything he did prior to unlocking his alpha should have affected his qualifications for the NoTW after unlocking it. Were I in his situation, I don't know if it would have occurred to me, either. -
Sometimes it feels that way, but I think it's our imaginations. It may be the whole annoyance of "how could I miss that guy? He's completely stunned and unable to defend himself!" that makes these instances stand out in our minds. The same way that missing after popping a yellow inspiration causes a "how could I miss!?" moments that makes if feel like yellow inspirations sometimes actually debuff accuracy.

Quote:Yeah, but a lot of badges require grinding. You can't be a serious badger without signing up for some grinding. I'm not really into grinding, that's why I only care about getting badges on two characters (one hero and one villain), and I'm not obsessed with collecting anywhere near the max number of badges.not on a badger....once per week to get the component and once per week for credit for the badge (or more if you like) since you don't get credit towards the badge, since you don't get badge credit unless you've already done it for the week, that is what the badge is about, just saying.

Quote:Here are some names that I consider pretty good:Those are what you consider "good" names. Here's a few examples of what I consider "good" names:
Atom Master
Ingot
Illusion
The Decoy
Gingerbread
See the difference? I don't expect I'll ever pick up a comic book and see the superhero In Silent Lucidity fighting an evil plot to conquer the world by he villainous Not Without Incident.
Look, up in the sky - it's a bird, it's a plane, it's... uh... Let Them Not Weep?
Death Warrant
Doctor Mischief
Doctor Arboreal
Professor Ursine
Pale Tiger
Sir Brimstone
Father Wicked
Steel Locust
Neon Flash
These are all names I've found available over the last two years. I think I could realistically see any of them appearing in a comic as a superhero/villain name. -
Quote:Finding the mission door is usually very easy, but there are a small number of cases where it can be tricky due to the geography. I have generally found that a few minutes of searching around is sufficient to locate most hard-to-find mission doors. The one exception for me was Faultline, where there really is a secret tunnel to the mission door. I asked about it on these forums and received an answer in lerss than 5 minutes. I tend to not like asking for help, but I've found that this community is friendly and makes doing so rather easy. The biggest is the poor navigational instructions many of these quests have, this being the latest. If there is a secret tunnel that leads to the door to the quest then at least SAY SO in the quest description.
Quote:Other quests say you need to wipe out every one, when you don't, yet some would say to kill the boss, but they mean kill the boss and everyone else in the instance.
Quote:I would surmise that for other ppl who come into this game cold, with no posse to help them navigate the pitfalls that await a noob, this is not a good thing. If the brass who pay attention to subscription rates read this; they might want to take note of this. CoH is a mature game in that the bulk of the player base has been around for a while and already know the ins and outs of just about every aspect except the new stuff. They also have a pretty good support system with their buds who have been at it for a while as well. It's easy therefore to get complacent about quest flows and design. -
Also popular as an end date for the Silver Age is Jack Kirby's departure from Marvel Comics. In fact that's the one I hear mentioned the most. Although I always found that a bit odd because 1) Jack Kirby continued to work in comics for a long time (it's the Silver Age of Comics, not the Silver Age of Marvel Comics), and 2) Kirby came back and continued to do quite a bit of work for Marvel for the next decade.
