My very first character was a Defender. I built her around the concept of two of my favourite PnP characters, so I rolled up a Kinetics/Archer.
It was my first foray into CoX, so how was I supposed to know it was supposed to be a difficult combination. o.O
Took me a while to understand positional awareness, for both Kinetics and Archery, especially on the AoE's. But I find it most entertaining to use Explosive Arrow to blow straggling foes over to the feet of the damage dealers. It's like X-mas for them, "Oooo, look! A present!" -

It seems that the "DemonLieu_Taunt_01.ogg" is not what the Ember Demon uses. Any ideas on what is might be?

What are your SG colours?
That's the first thing I check when a colour wont display properly outside of the costume editor.
As for taking screenshots in the editor, Win7 has a handy little app called the 'Snipping Tool'. Look for it under Accessories. -

I usually set mine at 20', that way I can zoom out and see my buff/shields, but anything with say 3 mouse-tics it goes 'poof'. A necessity on my Fire/fire Scrapper.

You may also want to check out the Mentor Project located at the Player Help section. A group for new, returning, and not-so-new players, that will answer your questions in-game, and give you tips and tricks, and the ends and outs of CoX.
As for what class to start out on... What type of play-stile do you like?
Edit: Since you're coming from WoW, you should realize that in CoX, there is no 'holy trinity'. No one AT (Archtype/class) is absolutely required for a teams success. -

This is true, however, i believe that if rent isnt paid for a long time, you can not even enter the SG base, until it is paid. So if your able to enter, this may not be the case. but i cant be 100% sure on this.
Im leaning toward the idea that you do not have enough power or control in your base.
Be warned that there is also a bug with long overdue rent, even though it's been brought up to date, power may not be restored and a GM has to be brought in to resolve the issue. -

Place your cursor over the line that separates where you enter text, and the window about, then click and hold, and drag up. Might have to try to grab it to the right of all the little tabs.

In my experience, those types are either
a.) Playing at too high a difficulty and wiping constantly
b.) Have no concept of tactics and are wiping constantly
c.) We're having problems with survivability and the minute they get a "healor" immediately go bump the difficulty
d.) All of the above.
I have also been on PuG's where the team sits around twiddling their thumbs because the person with the star refused to start the mission without a "healor".
That's why I have such an issue with the whole "We need a healor!" mentality. -
Possible because they are having to carry the load of a whole new graphics upgrade...
That'd be my guess anyway.

It's likely that your laptop drivers also need to be updated.
Be aware that most laptop video cards are just GPU's built on to the motherboard, so it's not like you can pull out the video card and replace it like you can with a desktop. Heat is a real issue, I blew up two video cards on my HP laptop with an nVidia GPU.
When it comes to upgrading your desktop video card there are two things you need to take into consideration, the dimensions of the new video card and will it fit, and your power supply, it's got to be able to power the new video card. Most stock power supply units are woefully underpowered when it comes to the new video cards.
You should go ahead and run the CoH Helper for your laptop and post it here as well.

Those are awesome, Caem. I particularly like Caemgen, both the ink and the coloured version and I love the power emissions coming off of Alpha.
