Quote:I'm pretty sure that Justice has more than it's fair share of people who know how to lead a raid. Unfortunately, raid burnout seems to happen frequently enough where a regular schedule seems to hard to keep. They aren't really regularly scheduled, although Justice could certainly gather enough folks on a regular basis. (In fact, we had an impromptu raid last week and it actually went pretty well.) Trouble is, there just aren't enough people who know how to run them. Hell, I know I don't. (Perhaps, I should learn.) Ice Knight has been great about running them lately.
I think part of the problem/reason is that the new style raid scheme severely limits the number of people in the hive, forcing good raid leaders/sub-leaders to either come extra early or be locked out of the hive. This, combined with a substantial number of raid leechers, makes people question why they want to keep leading after an extended period. -
Quote:Very nice! I was a bit disappointed in watching the video keynote that no one had asked about the tech behind Ultra mode, but you've allayed much of my concern regarding the graphics update.I mentioned this in the HeroCon updates thread, but I figure this is a good place to bring it up too! There's no need to hope the AMD/ATi issues will get fixed for Ultra-mode, the system running the Ultra-mode demos was sporting two AMD/ATi 4870X2 cards! Jimmy the IT guy says they're overkill, but since AMD was providing them to help make sure the demo ran flawlessly, he wasn't going to complain! I also asked Vince D'Amelio if there were going to be efforts to resolve the ATi issues or if users were SOL due to legacy code. That was when I found out the demo was run on a system with ATi cards.
(Actually, I guess that doesn't directly address the concerns with regard to non-Ultra-mode game settings. Nor does the info that Paragon is working closely with AMD & NVidia to ensure neither system is at a display disadvantage, as presumably that would be geared to the new graphics features.) *shrugs* sorry... didn't think to ask about that.
Also, I found out from TJ that Vince had told him that his AMD/ATi 4850HD 1MB would run all but a few or the Ultra-mode features at maxed out settings. I think he also said the next step up would handle features at maxed out settings. One presumes "handles" means it runs in something other than pathetic frame-rates.
Did you or anyone else manage to pin them down on SLI, Eyefinity, Hydra, and/or Nvidia 3D (glasses) compatibility? I would guess that the target platform was DirectX 9 clean code such that the Mac port would be smooth as possible and to ensure Windows XP was still a viable platform for CoX.
Were there any questions regarding the PhysX code or is that going to be ported over to OpenCL/Cuda/Havoc/DirectCompute?
Did anyone ask about anti-aliasing on the Mac port?
I'm asking here cuz I'm too lazy to find the main thread. :P -

Command return works ok for me still...I always hit it before entering my login, and it's always been ok for me.

Quote:Looks like Ultra mode announced at Hero Con is going to change a lot of things and hopefully fix the ongoing ATi issues.*I suspect that many of the issues that CoX has with Radeon drivers is tied to the whole SLI and general compatibility issue. As cards and architectures are getting more sophisticated and varied, there may be pressure to update the graphics engine, solving the Radeon issues and SLI in one fell swoop. This is a complete WAG on my part though. I haven't decompiled any CoX code to peek under the hood, so to speak.

Quote:Powergaming with SOs will get you banned from Justice.I don't think of myself as a min/maxer, though others might. I think of myself as a "just-enougher." I need to have just enough to run with the big dogs and compete, hold my own, or at least not slow them down.
While I do like having nice sets and some of the "premier" unique IOs, not all my characters have them. Hell, I have a couple of level 50s that still have mainly SOs in them. And you can see from my list that many of my characters are not FOTMs. I love my grav/FF, lots of fun and unique tactics but damn he was slow to level.
And stop stealing my stuff in WW. -
Quote:Justice ship raids can be brutal because of the unrepentant min/maxxers herding all the bloody rikti.I recently had to replace my 8800 as well. I ran over to Best Buy and took the last 9800 GTX they had and added another 2 gigs of RAM while I had the box open.
Things run very smooth, even with two accounts running on high settings, except for last night's ship raid. Lots of lag last night.

Too bad you can't herd hami.

I suspect that memory leak crashes are dependent on configuration of graphics cards and options within CoX (and graphics drivers).
The current version of CoX will crash after grabbing 1.5 GB and then zoning or loading a sound, although I've gotten up to 1.7 GB before crashing.
Reloadgfx doesn't fix things, although it may purge *some* memory, usually for me it will creep back up over 1.5GB and crash. With the latest patches hitting reloadgfx may reduce memory but it may still crash upon zoning even without going past 1.5GB.
Lately, it seems that I've crashed at 1.45GB without even using reloadgfx, and the times between crashes are much shorter (~1-2 hours of play vs 2-3)
I know 2 other people who I regularly play with that crash. We have a running tally/joke of how high our CoX partition gets before we crash out. All of us are running nVidia cards, although none of us have sat down to attempt to find out what else we've got in common. Another person we play with has rock solid stability, although I haven't asked him what configuration he has (yet).
All of us play TFs regularly, both sides, usually LGTF, ITF, most of the hero ones. Of course dropping off things at the auction house is part of post TF activities, but no one seems to have noted any correlation with zones, powers etc, since we tend to go all over the place. -
Quote:Just remember that CoX does not take advantage of SLI configurations (dual GPU), even if they are on a single card or not. Perhaps the devs will rework the engine to take advantage of SLI but there has been no indication that they are working towards that at the moment.*It'll really depend on your budget. If you plan on upgrading around January, I'd recommend getting an Nvidia 295 GTX. The price should drop quite a bit by then. I can load 6 instances of City of Heroes on my comp before I get any lag with that video card.
The other thing to keep in mind when you upgrade to a new card is your Power Supply Unit (PSU). Your current PSU might not have enough juice to handle one of the newer cards.
Although the Radeon 5x50s are very tempting, the poor interaction of features/drivers with CoX does give me pause when recommending AMD/ATi graphic cards for CoX. For every other application, I think the Radeons are superior.
If you want the best capability and compatibility of your card with CoX, then your best bet is to go with a GTX275 or GTX285, if CoX is all that matters to you. The best thing with the introduction of the new Radeons is that there is now massive pressure for nVidia to drop prices on those cards. GTX260s are getting to be reasonable too.
The biggest downside is that the GTX2xx cards are power hungry.
This is a handy chart that shows the relative performance of the cards since it is a total number and alphabet soup, and it's hard to tell what is considered to be a better performer than other GPU architecture.

Quote:++Of the two cards you listed the 7900GS is much faster than the HD 3450. The only thing the HD 3450 has going for it is Dx10.1 compatibility which is small consolation for a card 2 to 3 times slower.
Hierarchy of Graphics Cards -
If AMD/ATi were as well supported in drivers for this game (as Nvidia's), I'd make the switch over to the 58x0 series right away.

Quote:If that ever came to pass, I'd change my global to PumBubbler or something like that. No one would ever discover my previous alias.I absolutely understand what you're saying and I'm a big fan of venting and recovering. But I also know that it's generally never a good idea to capture all that raw emotion in writing and on an internet forum. You never know what your legacy will be, but there's a better than average chance that you'll be remembered by someone for the worst thing you said or did, despite any good you've done the other 364 days a year. The devs do read the forums and while they can't read everything, Murphy's Law suggests they'll somehow stumble on the one where you called them names and cussed them out.
Anyone who knows me knows I love a good rant and even the occasional full-on freak out. But pick your rant-mates with care. Rant in your team channel, on Skype, with your neighbor, whatever. But always think twice before you put it in writing for the world to see.
And believe me, if I've given good advice here, it's not because I think I'm above all that or would never do it myself. I'm giving it because I know first hand that it can work against you and if anyone else can learn something from my experiences, hopefully before they make the mistake on their own, then I think that's making the best out of a bad situation. -
Funnily enough, one of the people on the OPs link actually used to play CoH.

Quote:++I'd love to have base access as well (in addition to all my other fantasies like a pvp "danger room" using the base map as an arena map, an in-house tailor to avoid costume runs to those obscure corners where the tailors wet up shop, and a telepad to the Midnight Club), but I actually like the "meeting place" aspect of WW and BM... you go there and maybe see folks you haven't seen in awhile, akin to what might happen at the mall
I think it's always nice when there are natural "gathering spots" in-game, since it promotes a mode of socialization exterior to teaming; granted, this can be mind-meltingly idiotic (Atlas statue), but on the whole it's fun to run into people.
Too bad villains don't have a prime spot 'cept Cap BM. -
Quote:Seems to work for me.Perhaps if you calmed down and wrote a well-reasoned letter to the Devs and had your affected friends do the same, you might get a better response. Ranting and name-calling isn't the best option for accomplishing change, especially when it's done in an emotional state and in writing.

For most mid range and higher end CPUs now CoX won't be CPU starved, regardless of number of cores. I think the new AMDs have the best bang for the buck right now, especially if your primary game is this game.
With regards to frame rates and benchmarking, I have noticed that the fps upon starting the game is much smoother and higher than later on. This can have a noticeable effect on game play. I usually start off in the 40-50fps range just logging in, but as time goes on, zoning, TFs etc., the frame rate will slow.
During heavy action I do notice fps as low as the low teens, say when herding more than 20 or 30 mobs in itf or ship raids. If I do crash during those times and relaunch the app, the frame rate starts back in the high 30s (in the same area where I had crashed out).
FWIW, I think this slowdown may be due to settings in my Nvidia driver interacting with CoX, since I also get a memory leak that slowly accumulates, crashing out usually once past 1.5GB.
Only two other people I know have this (that I team with regularly), and both of them have Nvidia cards. Too bad I'm too lazy to find out what is leaking. Maybe one of these days. -
I dunno if 2GB of RAM is making the game hit the page file during heavy action. Just a WAG.

Quote:I'd peg your respective CPUs as being pretty close actually...some benching can be found here.I get 60FPS 90% of the time with everything completely set to the highest settings with the in-game options at 1920x1200. Certain areas in cap and grandville cause me to drop into the 40-50FPS range at times.
AMD X4 Phenom II 955 BE (OCed to 3.6ghz)
Nvidia 275GTX
4 gigs DDR3
Your video card is definately a little better than what I have, but my CPU is much more powerful. CoX is very CPU intensive, but I would imagine your Q6600 should be good enough to get more than 30FPS when you're just standing around. Some of the areas redside do cause a lot more stress on the hardware than blue, so theres nothing to worry about there.
Note that Quad core CPUs are a bit of a mismatch for CoX, as it only supports 2 threads. Offloading non CoX tasks to a third CPU/core generally helps but dual cores usually overclock (a lot) better, which usually give the duallies an edge.
I certainly would be nice to have a thread with benchmarks about CoX instead of relying on outside reviews, which *never* benchmark CoX.
Either a demo playback or various areas in zones would be something interesting to see how CPUs and GPUs perform and what optimizations would be best for them. -
