Which Video card is better?
By some fortune, I ended up with two video cards. Which would be better for City of Heroes?
Radeon HD 3450 vs. NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS Either way, since my power supply is 280 W and my RAM is 1 Gig (On VISTA!), I'm thinking I still need upgrades to get to even a bearable performance... Thanks! |

The 3450 has a clock of 600mhz with a 64bit memory bus, and has 40 unified shaders.
The 7900 GS has a clock of 450mhz with a 256bit memory bus, 7 dedicated vertex shaders and 20 dedicated pixel shaders.
When looking at fill rate, the RadeonHD 3450 can do 2400 Mpixels and 2400 Mtexels.
The 7900 GS can do 7200 Mpixels and 9000 Mtexels.
On paper, the 7900 GS offers more performance
Now, I don't have a 7900 GS. I've got a 7900 GT KO, a factory overclocked edition... and I know from personal experience that the card will not run on a 250 watt power supply. I also know it wouldn't run on a 300 watt power supply. (if you're wondering, I was trying to use the card in a Soltek SFF)
You might be able to get the 7900 GS to run on a 280 power supply... it's power requirements aren't as high as the GT varients. I just really doubt it.
I do know that the 250 watt power supply I had in the Soltek was capable of pushing both a Radeon x1900 AIW and a RadeonHD 3650... so it shouldn't have any problems pushing the RadeonHD 3450.
I'm currently using the 7900 with a 280 power supply. It works, but would it work better with an better supply?
And yes... trying to get RAM tomorrow.
Marcian : I'd seriously wonder if it was getting enough power to run at full speed, yes.
I know that my own 7900 GT KO will function in 2D mode without the additional power-cord plugged in, so even if you don't have enough power, the card will still try to function. Knowing what a power-sink the G7x chips are, I just find it hard to believe that a 7900 GS could be running at full tilt on such a lower-power source.
Well at 7900GS uses under 50 watts, nearly all at +12 volts so around 4 and a bit amps at 12 volts.
If the 7900GS is currently working in 3D with your current PSU, then a better PSU isn't going to do much other than give you the peace of mind that your computer isn't going to not start up one day because the PSU finally couldn't take it any longer. It won't make the 7900GS run any faster but you won't be "redlining" they 12 volt supply.
Of the two cards you listed the 7900GS is much faster than the HD 3450. The only thing the HD 3450 has going for it is Dx10.1 compatibility which is small consolation for a card 2 to 3 times slower.

Hierarchy of Graphics Cards
I love my 7900GS, but I upgraded my ps frrom 350 to 550. Rarely lag or dc, and all my game settings are maxed. (I did turn off bloom and depth of field.)
