Just conscious and lucid enough to apologise for the lack of reply... sorry, ball got rollin' at least (eventually).
As for the drivers.. on some level I wouldn't mind having a few issues here, at least I'd have experience. This computer seems to just shrug off every potential snag though.. latest drivers, checking every 2-4 weeks.
Running 10.10 and have been since 23/10, no issues.
Sapphire Radeon HD 5870 Vapor-X
My biggest problem is software conflicts, from what I can tell. And one rare intermittent issue with keyboard drivers that I've ignored (apart from updating them once without any change) since I just have to unplug & replug the keyboard to fix it.
Anyway.. crazy as I am I'm off to install the 11.11 drivers. I hope the 10.9 drivers and extra cooling fix it for you.
Oh and yeah, be wary of Windows Update. I did have several crashes and failed installs when I allowed windows update to update my graphics drivers. Do it manually and tell windows to keep its mitts off 'em. -
I've often seen that issue after maintenance and patches. Also on the Test and Beta servers. It usually goes away after a few hours or so. I can't say exactly what the cause is, however a couple (rhetorical) questions..
- Can your SG Mate log onto any other servers (Example: Virtue for a high load comparison and Pinnacle or Protector for a low load comparison)?
- Has there been a ticket submitted through to support?
I apologise that all I'm currently able to do is simply prompt a bit, but this isn't currently in my areas of knowledge, expertise or experience.
Regads,

Actually, je_saist is right.
Check this thread for details on the SLI things.
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=242328
And refer to the Issue 19 patch notes for a complete lack of any mention of SLI
http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/pat...tch_notes.html
Now I'm not exactly a repository of all knowledge in the universe.. but from what I know of SLI, it can work in several ways. The way mentioned in the aforelisted thread is based on nVidia's driver. The driver (and attached nVidia software) notice that City of Heroes is running, and gives you the option of using low level, inefficient, SLI to boost your performance. Any code that nVidia has in there, is likely not seeing CoH properly since we're a whole issue newer than what the driver update was made to address.
It is quite likely the failure of your SLI is caused by other things also. Try posting a CoH Helper and HijackThis log for us?
You can find a detailed guide on how to do just that over here. http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=231628

Some initial questions...
Is this on a Desktop or a Laptop (netbook or notebook)?
Could you post HijackThis and CoH Helper reports?
(Guide here http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=231628 )
Have you tried updating your drivers? This page here is useful for updating drivers, for AMD/ATI card users (I noticed you're using a Radeon HD 5800 series).
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
Presuming none of the above turns up anything useful... Some questions about the environment your computer is and has, been used in.
Do you have much dust in the room, around the computer or just in general in the building?
Do you have any furry animals inside or with access to the room(s) you use your computer in? (eg. cats or dogs)
Have you had any recent blackouts (power failures), brownouts (lack of electricity, often "visible" by lights dimming for more than a few seconds), or power spikes (harder to diagnose, often result in damage with noticable effects to things like Mircowave LCD panels, computers, televisions, etc.)?
Here's hoping we can find the solution.
~Phedra
PS. If you're wondering why so many questions? This amusing little article may lay some, although admittedly not much, light on the subject. http://www.pcauthority.com.au/News/2...e-mondays.aspx
I especially like this line..

You have no anti-malware programs running, according to the HijackThis log. Of course.. it may be that I don't recognise it... but then >.>
Try downloading these programs, installing them (as admin) and running them (as admin) and removing any and all detritus they find.
I'll note again, in Windows Vista and Windows 7 you MUST run anti-malware products with administrator priviledges so that they have access to remove all evils they find. While they will occasionally be able to remove malware without admin priviledges, it is far less guaranteed.
Spybot Search & Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Ad-Aware
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
And of course.. an anti-virus program of your choice. I'd suggest one of the following.
Avast!
http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
OR (Never more than two Anti-Virus and never more than two Firewall products should be installed let alone running, at the same time.)
AVG Free
http://free.avg.com/au-en/homepage
And of course for a general system clean up... I'd recommend trying CCleaner from Piriform. Link: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download
In the long term I'd suggest putting on a commercial firewall too, instead of relying on the one Windows has built-in. True, it has improved over the years but it's still a better idea to go with a third party one (which should require you to disable the windows one to avoid conflicts, when you install it). -
Ever since I found that emote in the Wedding Pack, I've wondered if it ever got used for just such an occassion.
From someone who has seen more than a couple of in-game weddings and considered having their own done (alongside a concurrent offline one of course!)...
Congratulations to the happy couple. Wish you all the best. -
Sorry to hear that, Tommy. For some reason I always view those types of posts with more sadness and regret.. than relief that my system seems to defy odds and not have problems with CoH (Or whatever other program is in question at the time. Although another game I recently purchased just doesn't want to work, at all. I guess I'll wait for the US release and repurchase it, at this point).
I personally hope that i21 involves a complete code-rewrite, even if that means that we only get one new Issue next year (although they'd be silly to release only that.. so if it does -by some miracle- happen They may just aim for something like i22 and put it on slow cook).
I'm positive this game has just had too much stuff tacked on. Sort of a "feature bloat" situation (CoV, GR, Ultra Mode, new Events, etc), where re-writing the game so the code is designed with support for these features (And some "possibly in the future" ones? Please?) from the ground up instead of being extended. I don't envy them such a task though.. not having done some programming before.... -

A very minor thing but I thought I'd point it out.
But I do encourage you to submit a bug report on it (in-game go to the Menu then Support then click the Bug button.. fill in the details and send it off). -
Quote:Surely at least partially forgivable considering the game was released over 6 years ago and has since had a companion game released, then merged into it (CoV) and even recently had an upgraded "modern graphics" mode stuck onto the side of it. About the only way for the game to compare in terms of performance per parts is for them to reprogram it (nearly entirely) from scratch with the current incarnation as a goal. Who knows, maybe we'll get only 1 new issue in 2011 and it'll be just that.. a complete rework of the game so it runs as efficiently as more modern stuff. Currently though it's pretty cool that it runs as well as it does, and does what it does, considering its age and the complexity of the modifications it has gone through.I'm still disappointed that my gtx 480 doesn't smoke coh. It isn't the card though because it smokes all the newer games, it's this game.
I run a: QX9650
4 gb ddr3 ram
windows 7 64 bit
GTX 480
Coh is installed on a 80gb SSD
This system runs better than my old gtx 280, windows xp, 2 gb ram, e8400 and coh on a standard sata drive but I still don't see whats up with this game with it being a performace hog.
Originally it was said that a gtx 285/295 should run ultra mode with little problems but I'm sure not running at 60 fps or higher at all times. Especially when 20 or more players are near me.
I think I'll wait and hope for a optimization patch of the coh before I invest anymore dollars in computer hardware. -
*activates Verbose Mode* (Anyone else love that feature of the old XP Command Prompt?)
Quote:Should I be ashamed that my very first action upon reading this was to use regedit to check for my windowed resolution? 1024x768Not sure what resolution you're running at but I can always suck up the performance of the GPU so SLI/Crossfire is important to me.
As for my windowed resolution? I'm guessing 1920x1080 since that's the biggest I can run on my main monitor. I did the tests a month or two back when I saw a thread asking about what it takes to max ultra mode (oddly enough I never posted in it).
For the "maxing" I manually adjusted every slider as high as I could... from memory, again I did this a few weeks back but that's the most logical way to approach the definition of "maxium settings".
My FPS varied from 40 upwards in most of the game with spikes of 28 in some places in praetoria..
I'm still not sure how looking at a dozen or so trees in a park with a pond between a few skyscrapers that are higher than the rest of the game's vertical limit could do such a horrendous thing. /sarcasm
Of course.. tests were done running HeroStats, Firefox, etc. I didn't bother closing anything. Then again I never do. Maybe I'll have to run HijackThis just out of curiosity some time soon.....
To be on-topic... what I've heard of the card is mostly the same as what I've seen said here. An apparent revision of the 480 aimed at closing the gap between nVidia and AMD.
I'm brand-neutral for the most part, if it's cheap enough and does the job I'm happy enough. Running a full-amd system right now but looking at upgrading to a Core i7 with a Radeon HD 6000 series. I've never really understood that kind of silly brand-fanaticism. If it falls in my lap, I'll do my best to make sure it gets used (this also means not giving 90 year olds who want to check their email once a month Core i5's....).
Edit: And a note in regard to PumBumbler's post. I too, tend to run my systems hard. I start wondering what's going wrong when my CPU drops below 38% usage.. or the RAM below 60%... et cetera. Usually only wonder what's wrong when the CPU hits 90% (especially if it's only one core.. ahem "plugin-container.exe")... -
Check out this article.
http://www.pcauthority.com.au/News/2...e-gtx-580.aspx
Personally I'd stick with a 480, based on that. There's bound to be some more up-to-date information of course, I just remembered reading this one a lil while back.
I'm also not really sure what the fuss is about multiple-GPU support. I'm running a Radeon HD 5870 and I can max ultra mode (on ALL settings, including my supported max resolution, etc.) on a single client with 40+ FPS constantly. Of course I run windowed so I can do 2 or 3 clients with mid to high UM settings, when needed. -
Make something that you enjoy playing otherwise it's probably a waste of your time. Another useful tack to take would be to find something that is supposed to be "bad" and make it work, very well, for you (presuming you like a challenge). When I made my only lvl 50 tanker, it was because everyone said electric armor was useless. I've got her nearly exclusively on Single Origin enhancements right now and usually when I die... it's because I hit agro cap (often twice over) and nobody else is left standing to fix the problem.
Quote:Programming taught me something WONDERFUL. A quick way to type "character" is "char". I don't think I quite understand your post, I'll try to address it anyway though.
- The "last objective" feature only works when there is only one objective left. Be that a glowy, enemy, destrutible object, et cetera.
- For non-defeat objectives you often need to clean the map of defeats before the Last Objective feature will kick-in.
- There also appears to be a bug regarding fog of war, often you'll need to explore the part of the map that the objective is in before it will show up.
-
Could you post a CoHHelper and HijackThis log, please? That way we'll have a bit more information about your game settings and what's running on your computer, which in turn makes it easier to find out what is wrong.
Check here for instructions.
In the meantime, where is this happening? In-game only? Costume editor? Character creation? Character selection?
Have you tried verifying your files? (Button on the CoH Launcher)
Does it happen in Safe Mode (little checkbox in the CoH Launcher).
If it is only happening during gameplay, try typing /reloadgfx
You may need to enter it a few times for it to work. -
A bit surprised nobody else posted this yet... but you seem to have both Norton and Sophos security products installed and running at the same time.
Multiple security products usually conflict and cause system instability, although usually and especially when they have real-time scanning.
I'd recommend uninstalling Norton myself (you can get a seperate program from their website..the uninstaller that comes with it doesn't work, never has).
(I'm so glad I never bothered counting how many broken computers I've seen that had Norton installed... Big numbers can be sooo unatractive sometimes.)
Edit: Geez it's a nightmare finding this... Try this page: http://preview.tinyurl.com/2d7jvst -
Quote:The "quick and dirty" solution to that is to put blankers on the screen for PvP maps. *shrug*Well it'll still be fixed FOV, just fixed vertically, not horizontally.
Assuming the the horizontal FOV is 90 degrees for a 4:3 monitor, that makes the vertical about 74 degrees (73.74).
Now if the vertical FOV is locked and not the horizontal, the horizontal FOV will be;
100.39 degrees on a 16:10 monitor, 148.95 degrees on 3, 16:10 monitors.
106.26 degrees on a 16:9 monitor, 151.93 degrees on 3, 16:9 monitors.
You can see how this, three monitors, could be an advantage in PVP, which is why it was locked on the horizontal FOV.
Sort of a non-issue if they use the extra screen space for HUD and UI though, which is what I'd prefer to see anyway. I can usually just zoom out if I need to see more. -
Drop it in the Developers' section. This area is just for players and.. well.. yeah. All a player can tell you is to respec, which you obviously don't want.
-
Two monitors here, both running at 1920 wide desktop resolution. Got a HD 5870 so I can already max out Ultra Mode too..
I, too, would love to see the UI tweaking capabilities suggested above. -
If you can't accept trade invites either, you'd best go through support and maybe bug it too.
Mine was in an SG not long after getting out. Have you tried any missions yet? You can start off with something like the Midnighter arc (practical!) to try to unstick it, if you haven't done any yet. -
If you want to future-proof yourself for the next 3 to 5 years, grab the DDR3 RAM and AM3 Motherboard/CPU.
If you're just looking for either something to give you a quick cheap experience with building or a short term fix, go the cheaper option.
I've got a 6 core 3.2GHz CPU that I often max out and 8GB of RAM that I often use 5GB to 7GB of (sure, I'm probably the general exception..).
For most people the 3 cores is likely to be sustainable for another 2 or 3 years. For gamers and other high-end users (video editing, photoshop, etc) you'll want 4 cores at least. Similar situation with RAM. Either lots of slower RAM (my 8GB of DDR2 800) or decent chunks of faster RAM (eg. 4GB of DDR3 1333). -
Just bug it in game or go post in the Devs' section of the forum. Only players bother to look at 98% of the posts in this section.
Also... as hinted at above, you're not likely to get a friendly response from that "1-5%". -
Quote:I've got a AMD Phenom II X6 1090T (Socket AM3 only) CPU and 8.0GB Dual-Channel DDR2.DDR2 RAM: the motherboard you're looking it at is a socket AM3, which does not support DDR2.
So I'm guessing (with the presumption that you're correct) that you're speaking specifically about that motherboard, since mine has no problems.
Edit: Although... come to think of it... my Motherboard is AM2+ (which AM3 CPUs are compatable with) and I had to update to the latest BIOS version to install this CPU. -
QR
I've got a 5870 as well, so it's not that. All fine here.
My stuff:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
AMD Phenom II x6 (the big one.. 1090T I think? I'd have to go check) at standard clock speed (3.2GHz).
8 GB RAM (DDR2 800)
Sapphire 5870 Vapor-X
Latest drivers.
No problem on the Live servers.
more HDD space than is good for me... -
After I get more sleep I'll have to come back here and read a bit more. I do have one (long) thing to say though, I'm running a Radeon HD 5870 without any notable problems. There's a tiny bit of triangular stretch on some fire powers (most notable Thermal Radiation heals) but that's nothing I haven't seen in several other games.. and my nVidia rig had the problem too (last upgrade to that was a GeForce 6200LE).
With my current setup 3 CoH clients with medium UM settings is no issue and if I run one.. I can max Ultra Mode easy (and keep 50+ FPS).
I'll definitely have to read those two long posts above.. they did indeed look interesting but sleep is needed. -
Like already said, it's generally a sign of worse things to come.
The last time I saw something like that "first" hand was when my best friend's graphics card melted itself, part of his motherboard and some of the power supply cables.
Of course it's not too likely yours will be that bad.. it could simply be a problem of overheating.
Check nothing is overheating (60 to 80 degrees Celsius for a graphics card is generally as high as it should go) and that your power supply is adequate (a little trickier, I've always gone for overkill so someone else had better give advice on that).
