Curses. I've been hunting folks interested in trying this and next week I'll be out of town. Curses!
-jared -
I'll be keeping an eye on this and swing buy if I can. One question:
When I first read the thread I thought it was "speed meeting" characters. Now I see it's speed meeting players. That's awesome. Particularly because I have issues finding people who roleplay in-game. I mean, it's one thing to have a serious roleplay in Pocket D or on a stormy rooftop, but it's another to keep roleplaying when Hellions are setting you on fire. For me, that's where it's at.
-jared
Edit: That wasn't a question. Oops. -
Someone just told me I've painted CoH art before without knowing it. I actually painted this a year ago, but the person who said "paint a super-power woman named The Pole Dancer" said the idea was based off her(yeah right, you know it was a dude) CoH character. Who, apparently, is a super-stripper. I don't get it either.
(WARNING: This picture is cute and abstracty, but it does have breasts with tassels on them. I think it's too poorly drawn to be offensive, but I try to cover my bases.)
The Pole Dancer
Man, it's weird to be posting old art, even if it is topical.
-jared
PS: Now that I'm a CoV player and sort of know the game, is it even possible to make a character that attacks enemies with a long pole? Or is "dancing" a pool power over on CoH?
PPS: Apparently all the dance abilities in CoH are toggles. There's joke there about turning them on and off, but I won't make it. -
I've got to get you to explain that....enemy alpha strike? You call in air support?
-
I think that was the first guide that actually explained everything, as opposed to the ones I've found where it just says: "Don't take this power it blows." The only thing that guide needs is screenshots of players enjoying some domination. Um. You know what I mean.
-jared -
That's awesome. I've always wanted to see a speed painting of Mr. Clean.

Update. Just had my first night of Brute therapy. By weird chance, I ran into an alt of Herculon, who showed me the way. Seriously. It was random that I ended up being a duo with his new brute.
I have to confess I chose Dark/Dark because of the weird toys that come later. But, in the spirit of this thread I did not buy the Fear power. As you all have pointed out, it has no SMASH. Now that I've declared my build, any other advice to share as Brute Therapy continues?
By the way I think I'm starting to figure out fury. At level 2 I just started running like a madman across mercy with the red at about 75 percent most of the time. Aside from rapid leveling, I was shocked at the one-hit murders that kept going on before me. It just seems so very wrong. But great. Thanks for the advice guys. And if you're on Defiant look up "Sybis" sometime.
-jared -
Since I can't edit one of my previous threads to become my new "dump it here" thread, forgive me making yet another thread. I figured after three or four it was time to consolidate. While I've got a bit of CoV stuff floating around my apartment, nothing quite starts a CoV art thread like pictures of your own character.
In-Game image:
Dak Bangla, as imagined by Cryptic Studios
I'm sure it's been done by everyone making a sonic blast corrupter, but making the screeching banshee/bat creature just made me happy. Happy enough to obsess a bit when my last painting session took hold.
Dak Bangla in Ink
and:
Dak Bangla acrylic doodle that isn't as good as the other one
Enjoy. I'll post more stuff.
Also if you want to see your character submitted to this treatment (visually tortured, whatever), send me a PM. I'm a art request [censored]. I've come to grips with that.

Fun > XP. Every day of the week. If I can make it, I'll be there.

Man, I hate opening overtly newbie threads. Sorry about this.
I've been playing a while now. I've tried all the archetypes and can, after a little while, get used to their style and the joy/doom they bring to the game...with one exception.
I can NOT for the life of me get very good at playing a Brute. Anyone got any advice for me? Think in general terms. Is there a certain level when the Brute experience just becomes a glorious thing?
I see LOTS of Brutes on CoV...what am I doing wrong? Am I missing my Brute gland?
-jared
(If it helps I've found that my brain works well with the Corrupter Archetype: Choose your targets with surgical precision, debuff what can potentially mess you up, and keep your friends alive. Oddly enough this does not seem to be working well with my Brute experience.) -
Sounds like it went really well. I'll curse the opera show I'm working on this week because, quite frankly caltrop acid mortar doom sounds hella more interesting than Don Giovanni right now. I'll do my best to hunt you guys down next week or so. Where's the regular meeting place for this bad boy?
-jared -
I'll second the Sonic suggestion. It's secondary effect is subtle...unless you actually care about damage. I'm a huge fan of energy because it's great having crowd control built into every damn power you have, but Sonic is, as the above post implies, the shield-eater. Really. It's splendid.
-jared -
I never have trouble finding teams...mostly because I send a couple of polite tells to folks (apologizing in advance for the trouble) or just broadcast a personal ad. Nothing as boring as "brute lv7 lft". Oh no. If you're wandering around Port or Cap and hear
"Single White Corrupt(lv14) seeks team for wining, dining, and dancing. Must like cats and the sound of a crushed spine." that would be me.
Now getting on a GOOD team that's another matter.
-jared
PS: Are there people out there who REALLY choose their teammates based off archetype/build alone? That's just crazy.
Again, I might not be the best person to make such statements...I've got an addiction to playing Corrupters and they're almost always useful to a team. So maybe I'm spoiled. -
"Did" makes it sound like I've stopped playing. : P
I haven't tried PvP yet...Whenever I stop by bloody bay (the only PVP area I've qualified for as of yet) it's pretty empty villain-wise. And running around solo in a PVP area strikes me as doom for a lonesome Dominator somehow.
I am afraid of PVP admittedly, mostly because everything I've read about it tells me that there are people waiting for me in there that will kill me with one hit while spamming the broadcast channel with tales of rectal doom and my mother.
If there's a time when lots of people are in PVP mode (or a particular PVP zone where everyone hangs out) by all means let me know where it is. I'd love to do it but most of what I play doesn't solo very well if that makes enough sense.
-jared -
Thanks for the break-down. Open Sore is lvl 18 right now...and since I've got a show to do this week and can't make it until next...I'll see you guys then.
and for what it's worth my vote goes to Ticking Toymasters of Terror, but only because I'm weird like that. And eventually we'll all have explosives. Lots and Lots of explosives.
-jared -
Oh man...sounds far too cool. You'll be getting a message from my Radiation/Traps boy Open Sore very soon.

:relief:
Honestly, I had no idea what the reaction to this would be. Apparently my SG was right. In response to random things in a completely disorganized way:
1. You've got a point about Lord OMG-LOOK-AT-MY-8-STIFF-RODS-OF DOOM. As for my thoughts, I've already posted all that I can say on the topic here:
http://uk.boards.cityofvillains.com/show...ge=3#Post799713
2. I'm sure CoH is very cool. It has to be, despite a few quirky things that I've noticed. You know like how it seems you have to go talk to a cowboy ( http://paragonwiki.com/index.php?tit...ld_Analyst.jpg ) to change your reputation.Seriously though I may end up trying out Heroes one day. I didn't actually get a "box" with my CoV, as my 6-month subscription was a gift from one of my readers on the condition that I review it. So while I didn't get an instruction book (causing no end of drama when I couldn't figure out how to descend using a jetpack thereby causing all flights to conclude with a deadly plummet to the earth) I did get the whole "the first one's free, kid" treatment. Yes, I still think of CoV as a drug.
3. Pocket D filled with the vibrating report of a man stuck on eteral chunk churling? I'm sure the roleplayers loved that.
4. Paint your character? Drop me a line. My friends know I'm a guest art/comic/request [censored] that can't help himself. Even better I'm one of those that has a lot of free time...or who did until I got introduced to CoV.
-jared
(global Billy Horrorshow if anyone is curious) -
Man, I wish there was some way to look for roleplayers when looking for teams (in CoV). I put it in my description a while back and the downside was no one sent invites if they weren't willing to roleplay. So the drama was: Label yourself and hang out alone or not label yourself and not roleplay?
:sigh:
Stupid catch 22's.
If anyone's serious about getting Villain roleplay going, I'd love to be included. I found an Roleplaying SG, but you know...there has to be more roleplayers on the servers. -
While I've got some more art to post in a moment (oh how my CoV addiction swallows ALL things), my SG and a few CoV friends told me I needed to share this on the CoV board. Told might be too relaxed a term. Bodily harm was mentioned and, later, maybe I'd wished I'd gone that route. Now that I've played the game more since I wrote this...there's certain things I would add and some things I would take back. But like I said, my SG is making me share this.
Btw like CoV, I think the rant is rated 16+. So it's not for little kids...I don't think. It's unlikely.

PS: Btw totally smite this if it looks like self-pimping of another site or something. I totally understand if that's the case....I just found hosting my own goofy things to be the best route to go. Also I don't know if comedic reviews of CoV count for this category. Then again, for what it's worth, after playing for one week I got inspired and churned this out. For better or for worse.
PPS: I'll make up for this with more paintings. I swear. -
My only question about Phase shift is that if it can only last 30 seconds tops (as in the description) why the hell are there so many "extend intangibility duration" enhancements? Off topic I know, but I lost sight of the "pool power" forum category.
-jared
PS: Chelsea, please tell me that your avatar was a screenshot of some variety. You can lie to me if you want....it brings me far too much joy. -
I simply change the names of my zombie minions to match those of people on the team. Playing a Necromancer from the future who's animating the soon-to-be-dead bodies of his friends (you know, from the future) just brings me so much joy. My "alpha" is always named after the guy we're trying to kidnap or capture....because somehow the idea of a time traveler murdering you with your own animated corpse just makes weird sense.
-jared -
I'll second the Hasten+Superspeed option. The SS works great for what I need it for, but I will admit that the inability to get OVER obstacles has been annoying when traveling. So I ended up later taking Super Jump just to get around without restrain (particularly in Cap). Sure, I now have Hasten and Combat Jumping in my arsenal (both great abilities) but obviously if I just wanted an all-terrain dominator I should have taken flight.
-jared
Edit: Not that flight would have fit the character's theme at all, but that's neither here nor there. -
I'm sure the joke has been made a dozen times already, but I was doodling today and decided to actually finish one of the City of Villains things that brought me a bit of joy.
What Ghost Widow has to put up with....
I swear, if anyone has a spider fetish, you know it's got to be him.
-jared -
Well, I know you can enter more than once, so I did something a little different. Mostly because the 1st one didn't make me smile.

Hope you dig it.
I only wish I'd remembered to post it before Valentine's day.
