Turns out various companies like Raytheon have been working toward these kinds of suits for decades now.
My guess is that if these things were "easy" we'd have them by now.
Clearly they have more work to do to before they are deemed to be "practical".
But even if it takes another 10 or 20 years for that at least all the work done on them up until now will have finally paid off. -
Quote:The problem I have with artists like Lucas who say stuff like "I don't like this version of my artwork because I didn't have the technology back then to make it like I wanted" is that technology is pretty much ALWAYS going to improve. When does enough finally become enough? You never saw da Vinci keep going back to the Mona Lisa to "tinker" with it every couple of years. You never saw Beethoven go back to rework his symphonies on a regular basis. Just because Lucas has the ability to go back and monkey with his own work doesn't mean he OUGHT to.To be fair, Lucas said he would never release the original theatrical versions on DVD because they weren't the movies he wanted to make. There was severe fan-backlash, like there is just about every time George announces something, but this time he seemed to take the fans' pleas into consideration.
I realize much of the reason he does it is that there's huge amounts of money to be made every few years. It's only when he tries to pawn off sad excuses for it as being "artistically reasonable" is when most people get upset with him. -
Quote:Actually this is pretty much -exactly- what I said about it.The thing that hasn't been mentioned is that, when dealing with specific sets for set bonuses, many sets have been designed so that the do not add enough enhancement to get every type of enhancement to the ED cap.

But since you probably explained it a little better than I did I won't quibble too much.
-
I faced this same scenario with my main badging character and what Catastrophe mentioned is pretty much what happens.
I ended up transferring my Leader rank to another character I have in the SG with the help of one of my fellow SG members. It's too bad I had to bother to do that in the first place, but it was better to be certain about the Leader rank than to let the game handle stripping me of the star "automagically" with possible questionable results.

Quote:Well based on what I know you can get INF-wise from converting A-merits into recipes I probably wouldn't make SHOs cost more than 5 A-merits, maybe even less.Depends on what you want.
However, I don't really care what the price is so long as it isn't more than what I suggest though.
But to address the concern Ang_Rui_Shen came up with the Devs would probably peg them at your original 10 A-merits just to keep these from ruining the existing methods to get them.
The net effect is that yes, we'd have a new way to get them, but that way would be grossly overpriced and semi-pointless to anyone who considers the existing options. -
I wouldn't strictly be against this idea, but on the other hand asking 10 A-merits for these enhancers is grossly over priced to begin with. I can usually earn at least 50 million INF (and oftentimes much more) from spending an A-merit to roll for 5 rare recipes and sell them on the markets. I have to think it's much cheaper just buying what you need (like SHOs) from the market directly.

Quote:So you want to try to convince somebody (in this case the Devs) to go through the extra effort to change the way they did something in order to retroactively prove to them that the original way they did that something was wrong? Basically your "evidence" for why locked costume items are bad is the mere fact that they -could- be offered to us unlocked?I want to see as many different ways to unlock these locked costumes to the point of this becoming trivial, just to show how bad of an idea locked costume are, especially if they're actually good.
I realize you and others don't like locked costume items, but trying to claim they are bad simply because they are only one of many game design choices the Devs had at their disposal is probably not going to convince the Devs to do anything about this.
If you guys can come up with some valid evidence that locked costume items are somehow game-breaking or otherwise harmful to the game then you might have a case. Otherwise simply "not wanting to unlock them" is probably not going to be enough to do it for you. -
Quote:The critical difference between having an Underwater zone and something else equally challenging to create (like Power Customization) is the will of the Devs.If we look at the postings above, many have valid points with regards to things to watch out for, but precious few deals with how to handle those concerns; instead of solving problems, we fall back into ridicule and sarcasm.
So once more, please re-look a the suggestion, and this time a bit of objective thinking on the idea itself would be greatly appreciated, and yes it can be followed by your perceived weaknesses or faults; but do challenge yourself to also come up with ways that they can be solved...
In the case of Power Customization it took the Devs a long time to do it but they always WANTED to do it.
In the case of an Underwater zone the Devs apparently don't even want to entertain the idea to begin with.
Yours could very well be the definition of "fighting a lost cause". *shrugs*
You offer some interesting ideas about it and you clearly want it to happen. But unless you can collectively get the Devs onboard with your ideas anything any other player here says to either agree with you or not is basically academic. -
Quote:Well Star Wars is such a huge franchise (both culturally and financially) that eventually, with either George's blessing or not, someone somewhere will make something like a SW:TNG that will go far beyond anything George originally envisioned. It's going to be fun to see how it turns out. That's such an interesting idea. I'd love to see Star Wars - The Next Generation.

Quote:Regarding the use of Ventrilo, it is not necessary, but helpful. I have had several people join CoPs I've lead that couldn't use Vent, and I simply typed things out for them. I generally advise people to at least listen in on Vent if possible, because once the trial is explained, coordinating people after that is as simple as "Buff up"......"Ok, attack"......Yeah the debate about VoIP for this game has been surfacing for years. It's not really surprising that this CoP trial has provided yet another example of where it can be useful.Quote:The game needs better multi team tools so that we don't have to go OUTSIDE the game to find them.
But even though it can be usuful I'm still firmly in the camp that this game should never dabble with creating a voice chat feature embedded directly in the game. I think it's fairly easy for the people who want to use it to set up their own third party voice chat servers using Vent and the like. I don't really want our Devs to waste any time trying to work in a clone of that capability here, especially as long as there's still a significant percentage of the playerbase who would never use it or would never WANT to use it.
Viable solutions for VoIP for this game exist already. Use them if you want, but please let's stop collectively suggesting the Devs waste time "reinventing the wheel" for this here. I'm for the Devs developing other tools that make the current in-game chat system work better. Those improvements would ultimately benefit everyone, not just the voice chat advocates. -
Quote:There's always going to be some subset of a playerbase which is going to consider a certain bit of MMO content to be trivial and another subset which considers that same content to be impossible. But when it comes to overall game balance for the majority the experiences of those fringe groups really don't matter. *shrugs*Sorry if I'm not sensitive to some of the complaints. After completing CoP a handful of times only a day or two after GR launched, it just seemed very doable. Set a time for capable players with appropriate powersets and skills to show up to give yourselves the best chance to succeed. If you can't throw all that together, you deserve to fail. Like my Pirates in MLB for the past 18 seasons.
Ultimately if it can be said that the use of Warburg nukes in the CoP did not equal automatic success and the LACK of Warburg nukes in the CoP does not equal automatic failure then why did the Devs ban the nukes from the trial in the first place? That should be the real question we should be asking here. -
Quote:Yes you always have to factor ED into your planning. But the thing about IO sets is that they usually affect so many different aspects of what you can buff up that ED doesn't really get in the way as much as you'd think.Assuming you're slotting say 3-4 of the set wouldnt' you hit ED really fast when using lvl 50 versions? So you wouldn't benefit from their higher +% amounts much more than say using lvl 30 ones
For example if you slot all 6 of an IO set into a power it might collectively buff up Damage, Accuracy, Recharge, END, Range and so on. Because the set buffs up so many different things there's not really any one single aspect (like Damage for instance) that gets buffed up so much that ED chops it down too much. Instead of having one quality buffed up too high a set usually balances out all the collective buffs well enough that you don't lose any significant benefit to ED.
The real advantage of IO sets is the fact that each enhancement usually buffs up 2 or 3 different things. It's like getting extra slots for a power WITHOUT suffering most of the ED drawbacks.

Well to be perfectly clear I'm not all that impressed with what I've seen of DCUO either.

But since it is a brand new superhero MMO based on a major comic book label it does represent new source of competition for this game and I would expect our Devs to treat it with the respect that deserves. I don't seriously expect it to harm the playerbase of this game in the long run, but I'd rather our Devs treat it like it has the potential to do that and make sure they do everything in their power to confront any threat this new MMO might represent.
This is why I would expect to hear about 2xp weekends, account reactivation events and/or I19 launching all around November 2nd.

I'm not really upset about the Devs banning Warburg nukes from the CoP Trial from the point of view that "they made completing the trial too easy and now it's going to be too hard" or some nonsense like that. As others have been pointing out people will eventually "figure out" the best way to beat this trial regardless of the nukes.
The problem I have with this change is that I believe, IIRC, this is the first time a specific set of temp powers have been uniquely banned from a particular trial/TF/SF of the game. I'm not really sure that's a good precedent for the Devs to be establishing here. If the Devs feel that unique power X shouldn't be allowed during Trial Y then what's going to stop them from doing other weirdly arbitrary piecemeal nerfs or bans in the future? This seems like it could be the beginning of a spiral that leads to a loss of overall game balance.
If the Devs felt there was something wrong with using nukes in this trial they should have either modified the nukes or modified the trial, NOT just ban these unique nukes from this single trial. Their hamfisted 'solution' in this case seems overly reactionary and shortsighted all things considered. *shrugs* -
I've never understood or experienced the idea that getting Tips is a long, tedious thing to do. *shrugs*
Whenever I want a Tip I just street-sweep for level 20+ bosses. It's never taken me more than about 5 minutes from the time I start hunting to the time I have my first Tip. Often it only takes one or two bosses tops. I've done this reliably at least 30 times on both red and blue sides.
Better luck to those having trouble with this... -
Quote:Whenever news like this pops up I find myself wondering what's going to happen to Star Wars after Lucas passes away. Don't get me wrong, I'm not really hoping he's going to die anytime soon. But like everyone else he's going to die sooner or later.
I'm sure Lucas has all sorts of wills and plans set up to try to have his "vision" carry on as long after his passing as possible. But as we see by Star Trek's example there are already people like J.J. Abrams who are steering a course for that franchise ever farther beyond the limits of what Gene Roddenberry was able to accomplish.
You have to wonder what the fate of Star Wars will be post Lucas. Will they constantly try to rehash and retrofit the same material every 10 years with the latest silly fad film technology or will someone finally have a bold idea and actually try to create something NEW and DIFFERENT with the foundation they have to work with.
As with everything I guess time will tell. -
All they have to do is figure out how it can be used to better kill people or how it can be used as some kind of "sexbot" enhancement.
After either one of those things happen you'd soon after be able to buy one of these for $19.95 at Radio Shack.

Quote:If anyone's really worried about it they can always set their mission difficulty settings to the easiest/lowest values possible as well. And don't let it worry you -- the timed missions in question really aren't that difficult, and most ATs/builds should have plenty of time to complete them.

When I18/GR went live a few weeks ago there were two badges which had the same names as two other preexisting badges. When this happens (amazingly it's happened about 10 other times over the history of the game so far) it makes it difficult for automated badge verifiers to tell the difference on the fan-based badge tracking sites until the Devs fix them with unique names.
In the latest patch the Devs included the following patch note:- The Achievement badge for completing a Hero Morality Mission has been renamed "Gallant" from "Resolute" to correct a duplicate title with the Veteran badge "Resolute".
Well for some unknown reason it turns out the Devs also fixed this other badge without mentioning it in the patch notes. The villain name for the Exploration badge in question was changed from "Socialite" to "Social Climber". I stumbled over it when I was having to readjust my /settitle binds for the new patch.
So in summary these badges changed from:
Explore badge Justice Avenger / Socialite (settitle 1517)
Achievement badge Resolute (settitle 1165)
to:
Explore badge Justice Avenger / Social Climber (settitle 1517)
Achievement badge Gallant (settitle 1165)
Which fixes both problems. -
I haven't kept exact written records on it but every time I've rolled for 5 random level 50 recipes from an A-merit I've been able to easily yield at least 50 million from the sale of those crafted recipes. I've done this at least 20 times at this point. Many times I'll net over 100 million from that exchange with a LotG or some-such.
You might get lucky doing the level 35-39 recipes, but I seem to get more reliable results from the level 50s. As always YMMV. -
I'm guessing we'll get one to coincide with I19 and/or whatever else the Devs are planning to do to "respond" to DCUO's launch in November.

Remember the Devs have a history of throwing out Issues to match up with other MMO launches: Issue 12 launched the same day Age of Conan did and Issue 16 launched about a week after Champions Online. Since DCUO is launching November 2nd I'd expect to see I19 and/or 2xp weekend to happen within a week or so of that date. -
Quote:As long as you're talking "normal" merits and not A-merits that'd probably be fine.Costume/Accessory unlocks with merits... hmm. If this were to happen I might actually use them.
Assuming of course the Devs ever consider -any- alternate method to get these things. -
Quote:If argument is hogwash then explain why -you- think the Devs designed it to work the way it does that doesn't include something like "They're just mean poopy-heads" or "the Devs hate villains".Sorry, I don't buy that.
Reason? Well, these things were run before weapon customisation even existed. So the 'Running it for the reward' arguement is flawed from the get go. Not to mention most people run the TFs for the merits and, more importantly, the rather nifty accolade anyway. Isn't that enough reward without also gating a decent costume part behind some rather ardous content?
The weapon unlocks are, with the exception of the Council weapons, tied to specific badges. And, for the most part, it's these badge choices that suck.
Red Caps; Heroes get a whole zone full, totally inaccesible to Villains most of the year round
Fake Nems; Incredibly hard to find redside, spawn plenty blueside on Peregrine
Family Bosses; Better than they were, but still 1/2 don't actually give progress to the badge redside.
Paragon Protectors: Entire missions filled with nothing but in Portal Corps, very rare spawns in the Fab in GV Redside, and all at level 53
So...really, that arguement is so much hogwash.
P.S. I've unlocked all these things on villains prior to I18/GR as well. It's hard but hardly impossible. -
Quote:The Devs might be willing to entertain the idea of making the number of Tips you have to do to switch alignments be variable but I doubt they would make it relatively easy or certain to get it done in one day. Remember the main reason they created the system to work the way it does now is to PREVENT people from being able to switch alignments quickly. In my opinion, this is the best suggestion on this subject so far! Good call! Just make it a straight 10% chance increase per Tip completed so that it is guaranteed by the 10th Tip mission completion. I would still drop any limit on Tips per day though.

This is why I suggested it be much more likely to trigger after say 8 or 9 missions than just 2. Getting it in only 2 would still be possible, but very unlikely. -
Like I said you clearly don't like the requirements to get these things and that's fine.
Obviously you're suggesting some kind of shortcut method to get these things. More power to you.
I realize you're going to think the Devs are pretty twisted and mean after I say this but I suspect part of the reason why the Devs made these items rewards for completing these tasks is precisely because many of the tasks in question are boring and tedious. It's quite possible if there was no bonus reward then NO ONE would do them. Chicken, meet egg.
Now obviously you could counter that point by blaming the Devs for making sucky content to begin with. True, many of these TFs/missions could be vastly improved to make them more interesting. But here's the rub: No matter what the Devs do to make their game more fun to play there's always going to be some part of it that everyone thinks is the most boring/sucky part. And guess what: whatever that part is will likely have a bonus reward like a costume item attached to it to make people want to run it.
You can either let this issue continue to frustrate you or just let it go.
The choice is ultimately yours.
P.S. I've had all these things unlocked for years on many alts so I hardly give them a second thought even if it was a BAD idea... *shrugs*
