  1. Nice job with the chart, Tony. I thought about doing that with my Chart of COH Metrics after NCsoft stopped releasing sub numbers, but I didn't because the numbers don't take inflation into account. As others have pointed, the Won has fluctuated a lot, and I don't consider it a reliable indicator. If we could get the numbers normalized, that would tells us a lot more.
  2. I tried to join but it said it was private, so I'm not there. I don't believe in private channels unless they're SG-based.
  3. I agree with Laevateinn. Good players matter more than ATs, and that's how most my TFs are run.
  4. I'm with the ULTRA coalition/channel. We have lots of active people and about a dozen of them have leader mentality, which leads to tons of Task Forces being run each day, and we've recently started organizing Hamidon raids on the weekends.

  5. Grats, Kheldarn. I still need Fashion Designer, Vanguard Recruit, Duelist and Predator -- I play my main way, way too much and they keep getting delayed. Three more months, though, and I can finally park my characters wherever I darn well please.

I heard that if someone gets the hostage and someone else uses the veteran reward Assemble the Team power to port everyone to the lab, the scientist will be ported together with the player it's attached to. Haven't personally tested it because I don't play villains, but I'd love to know if that's true; could be a good workaround.
  7. Memphis, I couldn't get it to work either on a E5300 (dual core) nor a Q8200 (quad core, which is very high end here). When a quad core processor still won't run it, I call it high end... though you're right, I hadn't seen that table. Intel did make a mess of things. I haven't used AMD since the Core2Duos were released.

Also, take into consideration my geographical location. We're hammered with huge import taxes and a weak currency here. Most systems don't have anything past a Celeron 530. A computer with the E5300? $1600, equivalent to two months average salary. An AMD X2 240 is only slightly cheaper, at $1550. My system is considered "high end" here, as things like the Radeon HD 5770 are luxuries; it costed me $1060. I can count the number of Core 2 Quad systems I've sold or maintained with one hand. They are "extreme high end", here.

Nope. ATI card. It's an Aero issue, not a drivers issue; the Desktop Window Manager doesn't play completely nice with OpenGL apps.

Even if it wasn't, I really cannot understand how someone can refuse upgrading their entire system to a more user-friendly, efficient, and streamlined environment just cause they can't send crash reports on a single video game.
You're ignoring the rest of the minor issues. Yes, they were all minor, but cummulative they got really annoying. It's the little things that happen more frequently the ones that bug me. The specific issue that made me go back to XP was driver issues with several devices, and my sound editing software crashing often because of the changes to the audio interface.

Seven tends to be too quick to believe a program is not responding just because its message queue freezes. While it's not great programming to let your message queue stay unprocessed for a long time, it's not uncommon; lots of programs stop processing messages while in loading loops, and Seven would constantly bug me to close them. I prefer to decide myself if a program is taking too long or not, and terminate it if and when I feel like it; I don't want the OS getting in my way.

User friendly: I'm an advanced user. I can make Windows XP as friendly or more friendly than seven (as in features included). Pretty transparent windows do not equal user friendliness. Searching everywhere can be done with several third party apps. The only thing I liked from Windows 7 was the better Bluetooth stack, but a third-party program takes care of that

Efficient: you have a weird definition for efficient. I found seven to be slower (not much, but noticeably so) and to use more system resources for several tasks; video encoding in particular, but also I found the system to be much less responsive under load than XP (in XP, if the system is at 100% CPU usage, I can still click "My Computer" and it loads; in Seven, I clicked it several times because it was doing nothing, and then after like 30 seconds, a bunch of instances of Explorer opened. Another of those "little things" that got very, very annoying.)

Streamlined environment: define what you mean by this, because it sounds like you're throwing buzzwords rather than praising specific features.

I like to be in control of my computer. I clean and optimize Windows XP for my personal needs and it runs much faster than Seven. I am quite comfortable with my security, so I don't need the OS babysitting me.

    Quote:
Furthermore, if you REALLY can't separate yourself from the almost-decade-old XP, you can download "XP Mode" or something to run it on Windows 7 for when you just need XP.
Doesn't work on all CPUs; it requires hardware virtualization. Only high end CPUs currently support that.

In the end, the OS is there to run software and get out of your way. That's how I see it, anyway. Seven kept getting in the way, with a bunch of minor glitches that caused major annoyances over time. Until I can be guaranteed that ALL my software will run JUST AS WELL as it does on XP, I'm staying on XP.

And it's not for lack of trying. I gave Vista a try. I beta tested Seven. I installed Seven after it released. I wasted a lot of time trying to like it. It still won't work for me.

  10. This is perfectly normal. It's a trend that was started with Google Chrome's Multi Process Architecture, to have each tab be a separate process and sandbox them; that isolates each page from the rest, minimizing the impact of security vulnerabilities, and also keeping the browser intact when one of the tabs crashes.

You have one processs for the IE "main frame", and several processes the tabs. Microsoft calls this "Loosely-Coupled IE".

Rylas, I was in the same boat (all my cards since 2003 have been NVIDIA cards), until a couple of months ago I had two NVIDIA cards fail on me and I waited a month for my distributor to get me a replacement (and in the end they couldn't; NVIDIA is making the cards scarce). I bought a Radeon HD 5770.

Yes, there are minor issues with COH. You're going to need to mess with the Catalyst Control Center in order to have FSAA back in COH. However, once I got past that, I'm really happy with the performance of the card, and it DOES run quieter and cooler than the GTX 260.

In Windows XP you'll have a few issues that a new driver should fix (the COH loading screens get corrupted if you alt-tab out of the game; doesn't affect the game at all, just the loading screens) and in Windows 7 you also have a few issues that are probably Aero's fault and would appear on a NVIDIA card anyway (I dumped Windows 7 last night and went back to XP, and they're gone).

If you don't miss messing with the Catalyst Control Center a bit, the 5770 is an excellent buy.
  13. The Sidekick system. My nephews got stuck playing WOW (poor young souls...) and I can't ever play with them because of the whole level mix thing.
  14. Similar to the ideas above, but probably easier to implement: a game mode that as soon as you enter the arena, turns off all your character's powers (everything, passives included), fixes your HP at a given value (say 1000 HP) and grants each player a couple of ranged attacks, a couple of melee attacks, a control attack and a jetpack (as temporary powers that only work in that game mode and go away after the match). That doesn't just level the playing field, it flattens it: people keep their costumes and interface, but everybody has the exact same tools. The map could be CTF based: each team starts at each side of a long base and they have to go to the other team's base, and click on an NPC to have them follow (like the scientists in Warburg) and bring them to their base. An story could be easily worked in there, villains kidnapping the scientist and heroes rescuing it, with a central feature (similar to a radio tower) responsible for shutting down all the character's own powers.

I'm going to disagree with you this time. Positron has two of the most painful mobs to face at that level: COT and Vahz. And the Clockwork's endurance drain doesn't help. By playing with a team of 8, you'll get a lot of bosses in every mission, and both COT bosses and Vahz bosses are pretty brutal at that level.

I think you got extremely lucky with that 8-man PUG Posi. An 8-person PUG is more likely to have at least a couple of players that "don't know what they're doing, don't cooperate, don't fight and travel efficiently, tend to go AFK or obsessively shop". Keeping it small means that if one of the four is not pulling their weight, you only have to face 4-man spawns, and not 8-man spawns, with a smaller team.

Also, the fastest Positron time we ever had was 1hr 16min, with a 4-man team. I don't remember the team right now, other than my sonic/rad defender.
  16. A few people in my SG PVP. I've joined them occasionally , but I feel really useless most of the time. So I asked them to give me a PVP build I could work with.

The build had only 4 attacks. And I was told one of them was useless and there for the sets, "only 3 attacks is all you need" (direct quote). Then it had both SS and SJ for mobility because otherwise "everybody will leave you behind"; as well as acrobatics and several powers (like Vengeance) only there to slot KB protection, because "you need mag 41 protection or the doms will be using you as a pinball". Also Hibernate in order to escape from battles that go bad.

I'll be giving it a try anyway, but when in order to not be "a lolbuild" I need to use more than half my power choices to utility powers I'm not even going to use, it doesn't get me very excited about the character.

My ideal entry-level PVP would be an arena mode that put the PPD vs. different villain mobs and you took control of NPCs, giving everybody the exact same powers with only cosmetic differences. That way I could just start an event and PLAY, without spending a week wrecking my build and a month hunting down IOs.

No, Gladiator matches don't count because I'm controlling NPCs and not playing as one; some of those NPCs are absurdly powerful and break any possibility of a fair fight. I don't know how much has changed, but I remember the Arch Mage of Agony could take on entire squads by itself.
  17. Never run Positron on a full team. Last time I had 8 players, we split in two teams of 4. Some people (probably not experienced in Positron) complained, but we gave deaf ears and started it anyway. My team had an ill/rad troller (me), two blasters and a scrapper. We finished in 1hr 36 mins. The other team had a kin troller, two scrappers, and I forget what else. They finished in 2hrs 10 mins.

    A clock.

Simple request here: a realtime clock somewhere in the screen. We have /showfps, why not /showclock? I play fullscreen and I really would like a reminder that it's 2am beefore I say "sure, I'll do the Faathim TF".
  19. I usually only play in full screen, so I did not try to reproduce in Windowed mode. I'll set it to Windowed mode now and next time it crashes, I'll post.

Win7 is a significant improvement over Vista, but assuming you're reasonably competent with computer security, it doesn't offer any "must-have" benefits over XP yet. Sooner or later, somebody will start providing software you need that doesn't work with XP, but until then, I'd wait.
This. A COH-specific problem is that when COH hangs, the hanging dialog ("coh hanged, tell us what was wrong") does NOT display (it's hidden "behind" the game screen) so you can't get to it to close the game. You have to ctrl+alt+del into the welcome screen, then pop the task manager from there in order to close the game. And it means you can't send crash reports.

A similar problem I'm running into is that sometimes I alt-tab out of COH and any program I try to activate also apperas "behind" the game window and I can't get to it. I have to close the game and restart it to open it. This doesn't happen all the time, but when it does, darn it's annoying.

    Server Merger...

If you think FREEDOM, of all places, is empty, no amount of server merging will ever help you. Last night, freakin' New Years Eve, there were 600 heroes and 300 villains online. I logged in my villain, which is the low-population side, and still had a LRSF running within 15 minutes.

You're just not looking for team in the right places. The maps (aka. zones) are ALWAYS going to feel empty; people play on instances, not in the game world.
  22. I'm completely "meh" on the upgrade to Windows 7. I have run into more problems than it's worth, and COH-related, several utilities don't work as well as they do on XP (the herostats overlay doesn't seem to work, and a certain file format viewing utility doesn't work at all). My next system reinstall is going to be to go back to XP, but I'm indifferent enough about 7 that I'm not rushing to reinstall XP right now.

There's nothing about Windows 7 worth rushing for. If you're happy with XP, you have no reason to migrate to 7.

Nope. You said: "But those aren't as effective as Single Origin, let alone dual origin, enhancements."

IOs are more effective than both SOs and DOs as you level up. SOs are more effective than DOs, as well. So nope, what you stated is not correct at all.

DOs: they enhance 16.66% an attribute, and you can slot them at level 15 (character level 12). If instead, you slot a level 15 IO, you get 19.2%. Better than DOs.

SOs: they enhance 33.33% an attribute, and you can slot them at level 25 (character level 22). Level 25 IOs don't quite match the stregth (at 32%) but they're still viable to slotting once and forgetting about it (because they don't go bad), and they get stronger as you level up. Level 30 IOs = 34.8%; stronger than same-level SOs. Level 35 IOs = 36.7%; even stronger. Level 40 IOs = 38.6%; as strong as +3 SOs. Level 50 IOs = 42.4%, way above SOs.
