  1. Just how am I supposed to get that "Trucker" badge?

If I am a winner, I permit NC Interactive, Inc. and NCsoft Europe Limited to use my name, likeness, photograph, hometown, and any comments that I may make about myself or this contest that I provide for advertising and promotional activities. I also certify that I am at least 13 years of age and am eligible to participate in this contest.
  2. While I'm not nearly the expert that many that have spoken are, I will make a suggestion that I didn't manage to see. Defragment your drive that has CoH installed on it. Something that simple may just help.

Random: How do I check to see if I'm already in an event? I was on a team that had finished and when I queued again it said I was still in an event.

Wait, who's this person? A friend asking me a question? I check the global and it's nobody I know. So I ignore it and work on filling the team up.

Less than two minutes later I get:

Random: Okay, you might want to remove helper from your title...

Oh... someone was taking my helper title seriously? I remember using Helper when it first was introduced. I started putting it on all my characters. But nobody ever asked me any questions. I never saw any newbies running around with a Help Me title. It was usually level 50s with it (ironically I suppose). On one of my alts I use Help Me just because it's pink. I thought it was just one of those systems that nobody really uses, like the "looking for" selections in the search tool. Or PvP.

So I sent a tell back saying that I didn't think anyone used those titles seriously. But apologized for not really knowing the answer and said it may be under the LFG tab.

Have I been neglectful in my responsibilities as a helper? Should I be answering more newbie questions? Should I be taking my title more seriously? Then again, I feel like this is so rare this may be the only time a stranger asks me a question. Do other servers besides Virtue take the title more seriously?
Speaking from the perspective of someone that traffics in a lot of customer service, while this wasn't your best moment, they had an unreasonable expectation level. I will, of course, offer an explanation for this opinion.

The key tipoff to me is they suggest you remove "Helper" after only 1 attempt at a question. And a question without any attempt made to identify why they were sending you an otherwise random tell at that. To me, this was an undue sense of entitlement.

And of course, once you understood what was occuring, you gave your best effort to answer. Not that they offered an apology, which was another tipoff.

On a more personal note, most of my toons are not flagged as either Helper or Help Me. The few exceptions ARE labeled with Helper and I'm usually prepared for that when I play. If you ever on Victory redside you might just see me on Wee one, happily tossing out /Kin buffs and advice.
  4. Why did the thread title immediately inspire a Phineas and Ferb sequence in my head?

I vote for a platypus pet the despawns at random!

Well, while you certainly have some... dynamic... ideas, I'm merely going to point out that this forum is for players to answer questions for other players. As such it gets less Dev perusal than City Life forums.
  6. Great to see this thread again! We recently gave our 9 year old a F2P account and will surprise her with the VIP starter kit this weekend since she got an excellent report at school.

But the real news I have is about her 4 year old sister, whom I shall dub "Horsey". Well when she saw that her sister had an account, she demanded some playtime too! So after her sister had finished we let her on my account to see some toons her sister and other kids had made on Pinnacle. We got distracted by something and we come back to find Horsey is making a character! We were stunned and amazed that a four year old could be doing this, and on her own! We let her at it, helping her only to type the name in. She goes in the tutorial and actually manages to get past the part where she has taken down 4 Shivans before she gets lost and loses interest.

Later as I play, she asks to see a particular toon when I'm done. Well I figure why not? From what we can gather, it's another of the toons made by one of the kids that has been ignored for over a year on Pinnacle. (Not many of my creations feature a lot of pink, so it was easier to narrow down.) So I start showing her the selections on that server already and on the second one she says "That's her. Can I play her daddy? PLEEEEEAAAASE?" I ask "Well is it okay if I watch you?". "Sure daddy." Is the reply I get.

And so my 4 year old proudly logs onto a level 7 Blaster in the Hollows and starts to explore. I'm amazed at her grasp of the 3D world. She can navigate around buildings, through tight alleyways, and jump onto rooftops all on her own! She can even rez at the hospital with minimal instruction. (Combat isn't her best area yet.) Now mind you, she only turns to the right, but she gets where she wants to go, even if she has to turn full circle 2-3 times to line up the path right.

Later she manages to tell me she wants to play where she saw her sister playing, so I help her get to Atlas Park where she explores until bedtime. She hasn't been on since, but I imagine when she see her sister on again...

What I want to do is move a server slot from one server to another, thus going form 3/3 Virtue/Union to 5/1 or even 6/0
While I've seen returning players as premiums, I've yet to see anyone subscribe and go back to premium firsthand. So I can't say from experience, sorry.

Having said that, my instinct is that your slots would go back to global status for you to allocate anew.
  8. Well here's what I believe will happen. First please understand that the server and/or global slots aren't tied to a particular toon.

When you go premium, you will have at least 2 global slots that you can apply wherever you like. Regardless of whether or not that slot is occupied by a toon at the time.

Depending on your situation, you may have slots you've already allocated to a server. These are server slots. They will function just as global slots do, but they can only be applied on their designated server.
  9. If a pet can be slotted for something that the alpha enhances, like say damage, then yes it does filter to them.
  10. While I can see the attraction, it should be optional.

What chance have the rest of us?!?
  12. We used to get FULL debt when we died at level 5! Outside OR inside! And Blasters weren't the only ones grateful to hear the phrase "debt cap".

Oh and don't even get me STARTED on yer fancy rent-controlled bases now! By in MY day, your base rent kept going up if your prestige was growing at ALL!

    ... zzzzZZZ *ork* Huh?

And we LIKED it that way!
  13. Just finished the last Graves arc tonight. I actually thought it was some of the better writing in CoH. I particularly cared for the writing of the Facemaker, Fateweaver, and Tech Quartermaster. Seemed to me they accomplished the job of telling you their function better than their heroside counterparts. I found the lackey request more engaging than the sidekick one as well. I felt no need to go to the clues on these with Graves whereas with Twinshot I did.

Overall I do like Twinshot better because it's a long slog of "Wait,... why am I doing this?" with Graves 1st 2 arcs before you get to the excellent 3rd.
  14. One more tidbit. Free players cannot enter a SG base.

    You can check vet badges.

One thing to add. You can global friend freebies. (I've done this twice so far.)

I've verified personally that they can be global friends. Twice in fact. But I'll admit I was relying on other forum posts for the Friends channel. I will check the next time I'm able.

The way I've been doing so is by sending tells to players in the 'Search' window asking them if they'd like to group with me. If, after a minute or so they haven't responded, I'll send them an invite.

However, you're never given any kind of warning that a player can't send tells if you send them one and they don't have access.

This evening, using this 'hesitant blind invite' method, I grouped with a new storm corrupter in King's Row. She'd been playing the game for three days and was really enjoying it. She'd made a really good lizard woman costume and wrote an interesting bio.

I'd already run into a few frustrations trying to drop inspirations on her when she was low on health and being told she didn't have permissions to trade. But what really took the cake for me was when I sent her a tell praising her costume and bio. I realized after a few seconds she probably wouldn't be able to respond. However a few seconds later she sent a message to the group window saying, "Thank you! I'm sorry I can't figure out the tell interface."

"If you hit backspace, you can reply to tells," I responded. "But you may not have access to it if you're a free-to-play player."

"That's probably it. I'm poor. " was her response.

I grouped with her for quite a bit more during the evening, and was very careful to let her know exactly what was going on since she was a new player. The whole time I was seething.

By keeping BASIC chat functionality away from f2p players, I realized, the restrictions are also making the game more difficult for me. I'm a paying player, a 'VIP', yet I have to go through EXACTLY the same hoops to communicate that f2p players do.

    This needs to be fixed.

In addition to a 'Free to Play' channel, we need an option like 'Receive tells from free players'. At the very least, if I, the paying VIP, send a tell to a free player, they should be able to respond to me.
Free players can access the Friends channel. And you can also Global friend them as well. They can also receive emails.

So there ARE options. Free options at that. They just don't happen to be where you're looking.

And of course it should be mentioned that the ability to use tells costs as little as $5. This can be paid at any point after they decide to do so. If they don't decide to spend their own money, then quite frankly, they deal with what they get for FREE. The entire point of the hybrid business model is to allow folks to pay for as much as they WANT to pay for. From the business side, there HAS to be incentive to buy something or no one will pay anything anymore.

Of course, you could send your new friends $5 yourself if you REALLY want to.

Do they stay within range if you fly straight up, thus providing the least range for them to fall behind due to a non-spherical Group Fly bubble(if it is non-spherical, I do not know)?

Do Demons specifically do well with Group Fly?

Does lag affect Group Fly with pets too badly?
I imagine a bad rubber-band may mean the pets are out of range and fall. Does this happen?
(I have to be concerned about lag as my internet is not exactly fast or perfect all day, every day.)

I'm rather curious about the above because I have gotten a bit tired of my Demons taking too long to follow me and being killed by enemy groups they run through. If Group Fly works with them well, that would alleviate the issues and allow me to take my pets quickly through messy areas.

It would also be interesting to see how a combination of Group Fly and Team Teleport would perform, which some builds may have the space to allow.
I haven't tried Group Fly with demons yet, But my Merc/Dark is my badger and has both Group Fly and Team Teleport. I took both for zone PvP reasons. Yes pets will drop out of Group Fly. My solution has always been to pause after every 4 seconds to let pets catch up. This is really only practical in PvP where not having pets near equals dead MM. In PvE, yeah pets die in transit. The summon powers recharge quick enough

Oh and the Group Fly bubble is indeed spherical.

So if I make 6 new free toons, what happens when I go back to VIP? I still have 12 more slots? It is a Vet thing? (66 months or so).
Ah yes. Server slots vs global slots. Server slots are specific to that server and can only be used to unlock previously available slots. If that slot is occupied by a MM or a controller, make sure you can use those BEFORE unlocking that slot! Unless you wanted to delete that toon anyway...

Now as to what happens when you go back to VIP. You will get server slots, on every server you checked out while not VIP, equal to your normal remaining unlocked allotment. So if say you had 18 slots on Freedom while VIP, and you unlocked 4 while premium, you would get 14 server tokens when you go back to VIP on the Freedom server. Basically you will be put back to your previous VIP state assuming nothing else happens to change your available number of slots.

Servers you did not look at while premium will not need to have anything unlocked.
  20. Thanks for all the replies! He is now happily killing Longbow in Mercy. Only adjustment we had to make was to adjust the graphics to absolute minimum due to his system.
  21. Apologies for my weak search-fu. I have managed to interest a friend and his fiancee in CoH. He will be F2P and she will be premium. I have a few questions.

    1. What's the best way to install the game? I'm bringing over my up to date copy and the NCsoft launcher on a flash drive. How do I do the install so that the launcher doesn't try a fresh download?

    2. I gave her the Architect Edition box set as a birthday gift some time ago. Will that box set alone allow her to use AE?

    Thanks in advance!
