Corsair is a quality brand at affordable prices and the specific model of Antec power supply there gets rave reviews. The Antec is somewhat higher build quality than the 400 Watt Corsair, is slightly more efficient (less of the electricity you pay for is lost as heat), and very quiet. Either one would support a 5770 card. The 550 Watt Corsair would support a 5830 or 5850.

    Note: Link to comparison broken.

As to PSUs, I tend to overspec them as a matter of personal preference. This way I don't run into issues of the PSU running on the high-end of it's output rating and burning out with prolonged use and leave room for expansion (more hard drives, another optical, fansFANSFANS etc).
  2. 1: You may want to look at bumping your RAM to 4GB. What you have is roughly enough for the OS to run okay, but you're start having resource contention issues once you start up the game.

Link to Crucial.com for your specific machine

2: It looks like you're running onboard video at the moment. That's NOT gonna cut it (it's also going to steal system memory).

As much as I'd like to boost for nVidia, their current solutions for gaming are either:

    • Unvavailable
    • Fare poorly against ATI/AMD (DAAMIT?) in "bang for buck" right now.
Here's the minimum for an ATI Card if you want to enjoy Ultra Mode:

Radeon 5770: $160 (Actual price, no shady rebates)

    A step up:

    Radeon 5830: $250

    Another step up:

    Radon 5850: $300

Beyond that you're into the really rarefied fields of top-end video cards and talking $400+

3: Also, note that all of the above cards require at least 1 (I believe both the 5830 and 5850 require 2) 6-pin PCI-E power connectors from your power supply unit.

If you still have the default Acer Power Supply unit in, it's a 250W unit and probably will NOT support any of the cards above. In which case you're likely talking about upgrading your PSU too.

Here's about the lowest cost unit I'd actually trust.

Here's one that's a couple bucks more that I've actually used in systems before.

4: As for the rest, the CPU is a little bit lower-end nowadays, but still perfectly fine for the game. If you WANT to upgrade it, you SHOULD be able to.

Your chip is a Pentium E2160. That's a Socket 775 chip. Your board is compatible with Core2 Duo Chips (which are still available).

Now you'll probably want to e-mail Acer Support.
Here's the link to Acer's Support Page for your computer.
Ask them how high-end of a chip you can put into the system.

Here's a list of currently available Socket 775 Core2Duo chips on Newegg.
All of which are 2x as fast (clockspeed wise) as your current chip.
Starting at $116 and going up.

Note: You'll probably also want to download the latest BIOS update and drivers from Acer as well.

Basically, if you're looking to upgrade ALL of the above (and can), you're looking at probably $470 (with the Radeon 5770), $570 (with the Radeon 5830), or $520 (with the Radeon 5850).

On the flip side, you COULD go with a new system for a bit more.

    CyberPowerPC

This system with bumped memory 4GB), PSU, and a Radeon 5770 goes for about $660 sans Operating System.

    "rare purples"

Tautology. Purples are, by definition rare.

Betting the purchase limit you have on the account (whatever the default is) is the problem.
    1. Go to PlayNC.com
    2. Log into your account
    3. Go to the Billing Summary page
    4. Check the line "30-Day Purchase Limit:" for how much you're going to allow. You may have this set to $50-60 by default.
    5. If it's that low, click on Change Card and re-enter your card info and bump the purchase limit higher.
    6. Give it a couple minutes to propagate
    7. Go buy the stuff you want.
Alternately: Wait another 27 days and then buy it....(Yeah, didn't say it was a GOOD alternative).
  6. In short, if you want to be absolutely incredible, be something else.
If you want to be GOD, go Invuln.

Much appreciated for the advice by the way, much better to get genuine reviews from you folks than some slick-rick salesman trying to fob me the latest tat at a stupid price.

Using a 690 myself. After several years of cursing myself with Antec Sonata cases, this one was a welcome relief. Lots of space, and put together quite nicely.

    Boomer!

    Happy Berfday to you!
    Happy Berfday to you!
    You look like a Rikti!
Now my brain's on fire too!
  9. I'm an nVidiot and even I agree with the advice above. The 5770 will give you better bang for the buck.

BUT YOU WILL HAVE TO HOCK YOUR SOUL!

I decided recently that I wanted to start playing again (I've had an active account for nearly this whole time). Well, needless to say, I'm no longer a part of the SG, but it is still showing up on the Super Group Register. Does anyone play in, or know of, an SG called "Pinnacle Punk Patrol"? I want to know if it's still active at all, and possibly jump back in. If it's not active, is it possible for me to "get it back"? Sorry if this seems really noob (it has been nearly 5 years) and thanks for taking the time.

Unfortunately, if you've been booted from the group, active or not, there's no way to regain access to it unless someone invites you.
  11. You forgot Blue Steel: Incarnate of Chuck Norris.

    The *I Win* button.

You enter a mission, press the button and everyone in the public zone hears a bunch of screaming, loud bangs, etc and the building you enter begins shooting dead bodies of the enemy type you're supposed to fight a-la repel. After a minute it stops, and you exit the now completed mission dusting your hands off.
  13. Okay thus far:

Hyperstrike: (Inv/SS-Tank) Former cop, got caught in a superbrawl in a nuclear power plant (retcon'ed to Terra Volta). Severely wounded, irradiated, and then ported out using another hero's reclaimator, so it wasn't really calibrated for his physiology.

Blastion: (Fire/Fire/Fire-Blaster) Crey experiment trying to use an artificially created metahuman body as a container for a mystically summoned being of elemental fire.

Eclipse Phase: (PB) who, after years of clandestine military superhuman work has retired home to Paragon City and is ROYALLY ticked at how fscked up it is. Essentially "get off my lawn" who explodes into a "crab" if you tick him off.

Inion Iomlain Gealai (I THINK I've got it spelled right...): (WS) Midnighter researcher merged with the nictus progeny of the unseen master from the Romulus ITF cut scene). The ITF is one big predestination paradox for her.

Bubbleshot: (FF/Arch-Defender) Offspring of another Incarnate. And she's just a bit *KABOOM!*...sensitive about it...

Tectonica: (Stone/Fire-Tank) An experimental precursor to the Devouring Earth's Terra.

Cosmic Rae: (Rad/Elec-Blaster) Midnighter Apprentice who went to the North Pole as part of an expedition to stop a Rikti mission to temporarily interfere with the Earth's magnetic field and irradiate the planet. The fight touched off a radiation cascade that killed everything in the area, including her. Mystically merged her consciousness into the radiation storm and resurrected.

Arachnosanguinatus (What can I say, if I don't want to team, I choose tough names...): (SOA/Bane) Assassin, saboteur, terrorist. Oh yeah, and a highly paid Arachnos freelancer.
  14. I support Paragon FC over Rogue Isles United.

I'll make the same offer to you I make to everyone asking about this.

Shoot me a PM via the board with a time and day good for you.
    Create a toon on Protector.
Be on Protector at that time.
I'll recruit you into my SG and turn you loose with a couple hundred thousand prestige and show you how to stack stuff.
  16. As noted above, look at upgrading your video card.

Also, consider throwing another 2GB of RAM into your system. The game can (and will, if you let it) consume over a gig by itself. Going with 4GB, even if you only see 3.0-3.5, allows you to give the game a decent amount of dedicated memory space without choking off the rest of the apps/services/etc running on the system and forcing a swap to hard drive (*SHUDDER*).

You've completely missed what others have told you. WoW is a mutant. Quite literally NO other MMO has anything CLOSE to WoW's numbers.

A "successful" MMO is usually considered to be one with between 75-120K active subscribers at the 12 month mark. WoW, with it's numbers 10-20x that is an anomaly. And anyone using WoW's numbers as a benchmark is pretty much doomed to be disappointed.

One of the reasons Marvel Universe Online was dropped (and became Champions Online) was the fact that they couldn't promise the publisher WoW-type numbers. AND THEY WERE RIGHT NOT TO.

The epic fantasy genre has far greater penetration than does the superhero comic book fantasy genre.

There are niches, the there are niches.

Epic Fantasy is an "everyone who owns a cell phone" type of niche.
Comic Book Superhero Fantasy is an "everyone who owns an iPhone" niche.

I know alot of people who can stand running around in chain armor and shields slaying dragons and stuff. I know tons of people who grew up on comics rather than DnD. Each is it's own genre. CoX just hasn't been capitalizing on all the comic movies/shows that have came out and continue to come out.
We're just waiting for you to pony up on a multi-million dollar marketing blitz for us.

"Better" is a value judgement. Everyone's is different. As such, the question itself is fairly pointless.

But outside of that how is it that WoW remains on top? Is it that it has longevity? Is it that it's genre is the most popular? Is it that it has great expansion packs? Is it the graphics? What gives?
The fact that they can boast millions of players. Granted, 2/3 of them are RMT accounts but hey... Some people get off on perceiving themselves as part of a massive community.

I just want to see CoX reign supreme.
    My advice. Get over it.

This game isn't for everyone. I, for one, love it. And so do a lot of people. But it's a waste of time for the devs to go chasing some mutant behemoth like WoW.

Brawl isn't completely useless. Especially now that it's an end-free attack.
ESPECIALLY for Brutes. Throw one Acc into it (unless you have massive global Acc or +ToHit, then dump in damage procs, then throw in a Rech).

Currently your choices of proc are:

Negative Energy: Hecatomb and Touch of Death
    Disorient: Pounding Slugfest
    Knockdown: Kinetic Combat
    Smashing: Gladiator's Strike
    Lethal: Mako's Bite

Simply six-slotting it with a set would yield more steady damage, but the proc route has the potential to yield nearly 3x that damage and spread it out through some other, more exotic, damage types.
  20. Okay, this has come up before. There was a marketing challenge a while back to see how much you could generate within the first hour of creating a toon.

The goal was 1 million inf. During the day, on a weekday, using sub-optimal flipping and vendoring on a toon with only one recipe slot, I was able to generate just under half a million inf.

1 hour to create enough wealth to SO out a toon at L25-30.

Given more time and more patient market use, the wealth generation would be much higher on a per-minute-in-game basis.

I've noted things like this in the past. On the STF, when we're not running MO, everything is nice and smooth. No deaths, and everyone's going "We shoulda MO'ed".

The second we flip to an MO run, we get SOMETHING that goes wrong. Like LR simply loses interest in the tank and runs over to spatter a squishy. The tank has a massive defense failure (lucky shot syndrome) and gets two-shotted.

Runs during the tower technician bug era.

The puller gets instantly soul-stormed by GW.

Random disconnects, super-lag, and other connectivity-related deaths.

That and, let's face it, the stress of it being a master run sometimes gets to people. I know it did me. After my third or fourth failed MOSTF, I was NOT someone you wanted to be around.

Losing fairly (someone screws up, or we just get overwhelmed), I can deal with. Aggravating, but i can deal.

Losing because some random fillip in the system (lag-DEAD, lucky shot syndrome, etc) brings out Hyper's ugly (well, uglier) side.

And my monitors and keyboard have the toothmarks to show for it...

Agreed. This would essentially depopulate the market of just about everything. You think it's hard to find stuff NOW? It'd also wind up making the slots more valuable than most of the items put up for sale in them. Premium drayage anyone?

    Question for clarification.

You have no SG? As in you go to the SG tab and it tells you you're not in one?

Or you can't access your base?

If the former, I think you're boned.

If the latter, sometimes long-delinquent bases can have all sorts of weird side effects.
