Actually, I think they did at least once. I'd have to break out my DLM DVDs to make sure though. And during the last DLM movie, where they were shooting the ashes into space, IIRC they were in the same scene.

You're talking stuff like human papilloma virus, Hepatitis, HIV, etc. In these cases, acquisition is seldom as simple as occupying the same room as the infected patient. Usually it requires contct with blood or other bodily fluids. STD, blood transfusion, sharing needles, etc. Why? Because these agents aren't really hardy enough to survive without a host. Hell, open air and sufficient sunlight kills HIV ex-vivo.

BIG difference between that and the Flu. Now if we somehow get an airborne version of Hepatitis, or something like an hardy, airborne version of polyomavirus or Epstein-Barr, the human race would be in deep, DEEP dookie.

Okay, cancers are caused by mutation of what would otherwise be normal, healthy cells. Usually this is caused by "transcription" errors introduced (or induced) during the cellular reproduction (copying) process. And there are myriad possible causes. Including just random chance, as well as genetic predisposition (born with it or born with a condition that leads to it).

Okay the rest of your post I can understand. It's how you feel. Kudos to you.

But the issue with the forums logging people out every day is not a "problem". It's a "WAI" security measure that happens to be inconvenient for users. It doesn't mean this behavior is wrong or broken, any more than requiring you to change passwords every X-number of months, or requiring Admin logon privs to perform certain tasks are in Windows.

Cancer is essentially a mutation in an otherwise normal cell structure. There are various things built into cells to make sure they multiply and die off in a fairly controlled fashion. Cancerous cells have been altered in a way that disrupts this. Essentially you have an cell that doesn't die off when or how it should and is replicating out of control. It keeps replicating copies of itself, at the expense of healthy cells in surrounding tissue.

So cancer isn't something you can really catch like a cold.

Just posted this in the other thread too.

    **********

Okay, did a little digging into the cookies. Because the 24 hour logout is getting to be a pain in the *BEEEP*.

Now, the vBulletin board doesn't just drop ONE cookie with all your data on it (at least not for firefox).

    It drops several.
It drops a randomly named session cookie. (expires with the session)
It drops a bbthread_lastview. (expires with the session)
It drops bbsessionhash. (expires with the session)
It drops PHPSESSID. (expires with the session)

And for me at least, it's also dropping:
    vbulletin_userlist_hide_avatars_incomingreqs
    vbulletin_userlist_hid_avatars_buddylist

Now it's ALSO dropping two final cookies:
    bbpassword
    bbuserid

Both these cookies are set to expire 24 hours after logon.

With IE, I'm getting a single, unified cookie that holds the data for both bbpassword and bbuserid. And, again, set to expire 24 hours after logon.

Now, what can you do about this? Not a whole hell of a lot.
You could find a tool that allows you to edit the cookie, but that doesn't work unless you know what you're editing. It's not as simple as opening it up in notepad and changing 11/11/2010 to 11/11/2020.

And, I understand why the timeout is set so low.

People may be accessing from public computers (and too stupid to check the public computer box). So they limit the damage by keeping the timeout reasonably short (stupid-short would be 1 hour, which is probably the setting on their public computer cookies).

    1. If the scrapper has wiped the spawn, there's no aggro to pull.
    2. A Stoner versus an Elec/Shield? Yeah, I could see that. Remember, it's all about threat level. Taunt or no, if the scrapper is vastly out-damaging the tank (and a tank in-Granite isn't necessarily a massive engine of damage all the time), and the scrapper got to the spawn first, yeah. It's going to be damn hard to strip aggro from the scrapper.
    3. Note: Please note that CMA said "aggro management tools". There's a difference between aggro acquisition and management.

    Quote:
My 40 SD/SS tanker can not pull agro back of a Katana/Invul on an AV unless I use taunt
Yep. But you DO have Taunt. A nice AUTO HIT tool. Not Confront (which requires an Acc check). One that WILL strip aggro from another player.

    Quote:
41 is a far as I have made it with my tankers. because I always get discouraged when a brute or Scrapper come in the group and show me up and yes this happens.
Yep. Some of it is play style. Some of it is build. Some of it is the player.

Do you get frustrated on your level 30 SO'ed scrapper when some billion-inf-build level 50 Brute comes in and makes you feel like a Defender?

    Quote:
I die every now and again and several people get scared. Then the scrapper or brute step up and tank the rest of the mob while the rest of the group whittles them away.
Okay, if you're a tank, Death is a regular companion. You should, ideally, be the first one to die. If you're the last one on the team still standing, you've technically failed.

    Quote:
yes it makes me very upset. Why am I sacrificing so much damage when another AT can tank as well as me or better.
Playing a tanker requires something that isn't really encouraged by Scrappers and Brutes. Patience. Scrappers and brutes are meant to kill stuff as fast as possible as a form of mitigation, since they aren't as durable as tanks. Brutes have the additional incentive of chasing fury that offsets this as well.

    Quote:
I agree the tanker has more of everything you mentioned but does the % of tanking match the % of damage you give up?
At the top end, the differences between heavily IO-optimized tanks, brutes, and scrappers in terms of durability are somewhat negligible. But you can't really compare the so-called billion-inf builds. Because they're heavily abusing other systems in the game to offset inherent holes in each AT's mitigation schemes.

    Quote:
I don't care about the average scrappers I want to know top level tank VS. TL scrapper and TL brute % in differences.
Sure, if you're going to spend 10+ digits on IOs, then your scrapper and brute are going to massively out-damage your tank. Period. However, the scrapper and brute are still going to be more fragile. Their debuff resists, and overall hit point totals mean that they're unable to absorb the same massive spikes in damage as tanks when "lucky shot" syndrome takes over (try fighting a couple 8-man-team spawns of Level 54 Rikti if you don't believe me).

Also, if you want to be accurate, you have to compare like-to-like. Trying to compare a Fire/Fire tank to an Inv/Fire Brute is relatively pointless. Sure, they both have the same damage mechanism, but the Brute has better passive damage mitigation.

    Quote:
Trust me sir I have been following your SD/Fire like a hawk on its prey. I even started one based on your comments about the massive damage the problem is I look at the numbers and say to myself I could start a brute and have the same defense along with better damage.
Just remember, while defense is king, it's not complete protection (ask any SR scrapper). You DO still get hit. It's the tank's ability to soak damage, even after taking resists into account, that still sets it apart from brutes and scrappers. That and the fact that said greater HP totals means they get more out of HP regeneration than brutes or scrappers.

    Quote:
If the defense cap was 55 and I had to work my **** off as a tank to get there and no other AT could beat me there then I would be satisfied. The issue is 3 or more other ATs can be the same as me while maintaining their choke hold on damage.
That's just it, they aren't the same. Superficially you all have similar numbers for defense. But that big-*** ocean of HP and the even higher resist cap is what sets you head and shoulders above a scrapper or brute when the fit hits the shan.

    Quote:
I can understand that the tanker will take less damage as far as resist goes but how does this compare to the amount of
    damage being dished out?
Depends. You farming -1's in your preferred damage type? Go with the Brute or Scrapper. Simply put, you kill stuff faster.

    Tanking Hamidon? Lord Recluse? Reichsman?

Tanks are still preferable. You're more survivable against all but the nastiest run of bad luck on the RNG (and yes, I've had a defense-capped Stone/Fire tank get three-shotted by tower-buffed LR when the RNG has hated me).

    Quote:
I am going to keep bruise out of the situation because even from a N00b it is clear 99.9% of this game that I have seen is AOE based.
Don't tell that to an EM tank.

    Quote:
That is why my question refers to issue 19. In the end all end is it more of the same or does a true tanker have a real role?
Yes. The tank is still the preferred aggro-management specialist on a team. Now, in a steamroll situation, where you're mowing down stuff as fast as you can, aggro management is less important. But you aren't always in a steamroll scenario.

    Quote:
So is there anything in the game that is harder than that? will I19 bring the tanker to the forefront or will the status qua remain the same?
There's a lot of stuff. Much of it already mentioned.

    Quote:
I want the BEST tank in the game that can maximize 100% of his damage. I want to be able to tank the hardest content in the game and I want to be able to pump out the most damage I can while tanking the hardest content in the game.
Remember opinions on this are like ********, everyone has one.

    Quote:
If this is a stone/strawberry tank then that's what it is. I just want to know what that is.
Okay, while stone is the baseline benchmark for tank durability, it's also the poorest selection in terms of damage output (granite's damage and recharge debuff pretty much insures that).

Fire/Fire will likely rule for damage output (since Fire/*'s main damage mitigation IS damage), but it's not necessarily the most survivable next to Shield, Inv, and Stone.

Shield/Fire would probably be your best bet for raw damage output, though the Shield/Super Strength would probably be nothing to sneeze at. Think about it, the combination of +DMG from both Against All Odds and Rage (or even better, Rage that's got enough recharge to both be perma and overlap.

Before listening to anyone else here (myself included), plonk down a CoH Helper report so we know what kind of system you're running (makes no sense to recommend a GTX580 if you're running a P4 system with a 300W PSU).

As to the 580. It's nVidia's "refresh" product. Normally with nVidia, you'll see a new product released with a bunch of new technology, architecture, etc. That's what the 470 and 480 were.

Six months to a year down the road, they release their refresh product. They've respun and/or downsized the core, made some optimizations, fixed some nastiness from the original releases and gotten a better handle on the drivers. Performance is better, everyone's happy, etc.

The only thing you need to keep in mind is that the 580 is basically going to be going for a price premium. You can buy whole computers for less than the cost of the 580.

As to the people who're saying "wait till AMD releases their next chip".

That's great, fine and wonderful. And yes, the next iteration of the Radeon line looks to be a doozy.

And a piss-poor, self-defeating argument. If you wait, you'll ALWAYS get something better "down the road".

My advice is "buy the best available to you, in your price range, at the time you're looking to buy. If the timetable for "something better is more than a month, forget about it and buy now.

As for AMD vs nVidia. Pay attention to people's biases here (even mine). Both cards work equally well in the game. Both cards have their own flaws and high points with regards to this game.

Now a word from my bias. Notice there's a couple nice amalgamated threads for issues with ATI/AMD cards. Notice that there really isn't anything similar with nVidia. Also keep in mind the game was originally optimized with nVidia's cards/drivers in mind. Yes, there's been attempts to clean the game up and make it more vendor neutral. But still.

In the end, do your research, make your own decision.

On Recluse itself? Well, if you hit him, he'll probably burn it off almost instantly.

A better use of DetField is on one of the towers. It doesn't last very long, but it can help the tank out a bit by denying Recluse the buff for a short interval. Simply det-field the next tower in the chain, then go back to beating on the current tower. Usually, you can get DetField on each of towers 2, 3 and 4 unless your team is doing insane amounts of damage.

Reminds me of when I got my first nVidia TNT card.

Play until my head hurt too much to continue because my stomach was empty and I've touched off a migraine.
Took a couple weeks, but I was finally able to play for extended periods without projectile vomiting and without wishing my head would explode instead of having a migraine.

To this day though, watching someone else play 3D gives me motion sickness.

  14. Was a comic book and RPG geek when I was a kid. Well, at least on the surface. I've been a computer geek since I was 6. Still, got hooked on D&D, BatttleDroids, and the like. Even got to playtest for StarFleet Battles when I was in High School.

Due to being stationed overseas with the Army, it was a bit tough to keep up on comic books (but my bank account thanked me). So I RP'ed a lot. Kudos to Wargames West for keeping me in cool supplements. I was MAJORLY bummed when they closed down in 2001 (the Internet did them in, oddly enough).

Anyhoo, I'd seen CoH when it first came out. But at the time I wasn't playing much of anything. And coming from a Quake/UT background, I was somewhat...condescending of "rent to pwn". The closest I got was the last iteration of MultiPlayer BattleTech before EA took a nice, greasy **** all over it. ALMOST considered paying for it (or at least abusing my connections to get a free account). That and the fact that I was broke and putting myself through college working two full-time jobs kinda put a crimp in it. Knowing what I know now, had I picked it up, I'd have never completed college...

Fast forward to 2007. I saw the TV Commercial for Pirates of the Caribbean Online, stating "free to play". Having enjoyed the movies, I signed in and had a blast. Paid for 6 months. A year later, I'd built a new computer finally (the last one was built in 2000 and while it wasn't on it's last legs, it'd been upgraded as much as it was going to). I was perusing at Fry's and saw CoH again. I'd remembered being interested in it. But never really picked it up. So I did (narrowly choosing it over Freedom Force).

    The rest...is legend...

Internet connection is AT&T DSL 6.0 Mbps/768 Kbps

    Network connection:

    Computer: Gigabit
    Router: Gigabit
DSL Gateway: *Unsure* Probably 10 MBit.

I am not at the computer currently so I can't provide a CoH Helper or HijackThis (But I will later if necessary.)

Just looking for opinions on this and whether I might see a load speed improvement by getting an SSD and using it for CoH.

Note: Game performance, otherwise, is just fine. Just the zone loads are unconscionably slow. This happens on pretty much every server, regardless (Freedom, Protector, Champion, Justice, etc).
