    1 Tanker only

I remember long ago, I had my invul / SS and he was level 40, and was my highest level character, and there was an ITF forming. I showed up, chuffed to bits. Well, there happens to be a level 50 Tanker there, also Invulnerable. So naturally, I am requested to not use my Tanker. Yet, and I remember this because I scribbled it down because I was going to tell my mate another CoH player in work and I just found this bit of paper now. There were:

    3 controllers
    2 Scrappers
    1 Blaster
    2 Tankers

So, I remember I had a mini argument, and I basically said, well, you're happy to have 3 controllers, but won't allow a second tanker. I don't understand why I have to change, when going on the figures, asking a controller to change would be more prudent.

So it went back and forth, and I said, I can't do the ITF with anybody else, because this is my highest character and I dropped the team then feeling miserable and rejected. (lol awwwww.)

I see it a lot, people don't seem to want more than one Tanker, but will happily take multiple other AT's. Why is it, there is this "one Tanker only" unwritten rule? I get that DPS wise there are better to be had for sure in melee and ranged. But Tankers are not THAT bad, especially once their big nuke attacks are 6 slotted out and land after a tier 1. I've seen Tankers who readily one shot minions and two and three shotting lieutenants and they are done, are there other "support" AT's that can two shot some lieutenants?

On an 8 hero / villain team, I think having 2 tankers is not bad. I like all the AT's in the game, but for that sheer unstoppable melee feeling, there is NOTHING in CoH IMHO that compares to a tanker.
Okay, pretty much what everyone else said. HOWEVER, there are occasions (like fighting Romulus in the last mission) where multiple sources of elevated aggro can cause the Romulus AI to freak out. On one of the Tanker Tuesdays, we had a situation where Rommy broke contact and sprinted off to the front of the map.

    Why?

Some people HATE that kind of thing and go out of their way by perpetuating the "more tanks not needed" meme.

Remember how damage works in this game.

Most damage has multiple types/positions attached.

As such, in a lot of cases, psi damaged is alloyed with another damage type or position for which you have greater defense numbers.

Yes, there are a couple cases of pure psi in the game. But these are corner cases, not the norm.

Basically, if you're really worried about pure psi damage, chomp a purple before charging in just to buffer yourself.

If you're worried about MASSED psi damage (like on ship raids) eat some oranges.

We'll see. Just remember, the best time to buy is always NOW. You can "just wait a little longer for something better" forever. And yes, you'll wind up with something better...if you ever buy anything.

If you don't see actual shipping product by the end of July, go get yourself the i7 system (which is only going to keep getting cheaper).

Yeah. Sorry. Haven't gotten myself broken to typing *TB* yet.

    Maybe tech-fogeydom is setting in...

  6. Did you go into the Incarnate interface, click to another power type, then click back?

Unfortunately the Incarnate screen doesn't auto-refresh. So it may not really be "gone".

Every person I've ever known who has spouted something like that was either selling something or had bought, whole-hog, into one of these "solutions" that everyone and their brother seems to want to sell.

It's a failure to comprehend that "security" isn't a product. Thus, leveraging an economy of whatever scale isn't going to deliver you "security". It'll get you services at a better price, but security is still a process, not product.

    I dunno about bad luck.

    Everyone has it.

Also, you DID see where the system I built was:

A: More powerful as a gaming system
    B: $40 cheaper

    Right?

I know you may be wary. But, realistically, if you're building a high-end gaming rig, AMD just, unfortunately, isn't in the running. Maybe once we see Bulldozer specs. But until then, Intel's the best bang for the buck.

Also, as Newchemicals pointed out, ESPECIALLY for CoH, Crossfire and/or SLI aren't the best solution. It's better to go with a single, more powerful card. You don't run into any X-Fire/SLI issues and the card itself has more than enough "oomph" to play anything.
  10. 1: Going with 4 sticks of 2GB memory isn't as optimal (or expansion-ready) as going with 2 sticks of 4GB).

    2: DDR3 2000 is overkill.

3: No offense but the Velociraptors are a waste of money. You're better off going with a 128GB drive for OS/Game and a 2GB drive for storage.

4: If you're looking for max performance, going to a 6-core AMD isn't the way to go. Right now, until we see something for the next-gen AMD chips, the Intel i7 is the way to go. It's even more OC-friendly with the K-series processors. My boss is running a 2600K right now and with a MILD overclock is seeing 3.8Ghz with no adverse thermal or processing effects.

Here's an Intel rework of your system:

    http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/Pu...umber=23881028

    Intel 2600K Processor
z68 Motherboard (This is a Gigabyte "bare bones" version. But you still have lots of budget if you want to step up to the "enthusiast" boards.)
    8GB RAM (4GBx2): DDR3 1600 (Not really necessary since spec is DDR3 1333)
    128GB Crucial SSD
2GB Hard drive with 64MB cache
Radeon 6950 (2GB variant...helpful with higher FSAA levels)
    750W PSU (Thermaltake ToughPower)
    64-Bit Win7 Home Premium
    12x Blu-Ray burner

If you're in the US: $1679.89

Basically, save in a couple of MASSIVELY multithreaded apps (none of which are games), this system will eat the AMD system's lunch and steal its milk money.
  11. Had a nice run tonight. Short, but we tore it up.

Sorry it was as short as it was. I'm due to ship out to a convention early tomorrow morning and half the stuff I was supposed to get accomplished today by working from home didn't get done because I had a 8 solid hours of customers calling up with their hair on fire.

I should be back in plenty of time for the run next week though. Might be a little car-lagged. But hey.

And if you're in the Columbus area this week, stop by Origins and look me up at the Catalyst Game Labs booth.

Yeah, but what happens if you have a Mag-Infinity-Plus-Three fear aura that you can't shut off? Any time I get within 10 feet of a real female (and usually within 30 feet of "the other kind"), they immediately take off, usually screaming, mostly at the top of their lungs, always in fear.

    Is Fire/Elec. Not Invuln/Fire.

So, my first suggestion would be to get us a build that results in an Invuln/Fire tank.

Thing is, he's going to hit swap regardless. And given the state of his space issues right now, that's absolutely ruinous for performance.

He doesn't really have enough free space to defrag his drives properly.

I'm betting that what's going on is his system is going to hit swap space (based on how little free memory he has), and halting while his drives find enough contiguous free space to write stuff to.

He needs to look at cleaning things off his drives and/or upgrading to larger ones.

And even in '79, there was talk that full-blown computer systems weren't needed at home and that other appliance-type devices would serve better.

While it may be hyperbole, it's not quite as hyperbolic as you'd imagine.

One thing that came to mind while reading the thread: what of the potential to move CoH to "the Cloud". (I'm not a big fan of the Cloud, yet, mostly due to the headaches with work email it gives me. Headaches that were supposed to have been resolved by migrating to the Cloud.) Back to CoH though. Might the game be migrated to Cloud technology at some point?
Right now? I think it'd be uneconomical in current cloud-based billing structures.

    Need I go on?

The devs never intended a LOT of the stuff that's come to pass in this game. Yet players have gone ahead and done them, regardless of artificial impediments put into place.

  24. Sorry I won't be at the Virtue event guys. Heading out to a convention that day. And while I could probably hop on with my phone as an access point, it's not really suitable for teaming.

Will hopefully see you at the Union event.

My 21 year old son, @Kinetic Jaunt, became suddenly ill about two months ago and after many, many tests it was determined that he has a rare disease know as Aplastic Anemia. He requires a bone marrow transplant and we were extremely lucky, if anything about this can be called lucky, in that his only full sibling is a match (there is only a 25% chance full siblings will match). He is currently in the hospital and as soon as he's strong enough, hopefully in the next week, he will start chemo and a week after that his brother will go in to make the donation.

Once he is strong enough, he will return to CoH thanks to the great people at NCSOFT who gave him two free months of game time. He does have his computer in the hospital and may even try logging in from there once he's up to it.

Both of my sons started playing CoH in May 04 and are the ones responsible for getting me into it. Though, my younger son no longer plays (college and all that), he still listens to my stories about what I've been up to writing/playing MA arcs.

Anyways, I just wanted to thank NCSOFT and let you all know because I consider so many of you my friends.

Hope he makes it back soon. These villains have been getting out of hand whilst he's been gone!

    Best wishes.
