Defenders have better heals than Brutes. So why would anyone play one? Brutes are becoming obsolete now that we can make Villain Defenders.

Osnap I just summarized the thread.

Whatever you do, make sure you run a Flashback of appropriate conditions to pick up the Cliche badge.
  4. I don't have that problem personally, since I'm an economist. I don't like going through the trouble to slot a bunch of low-level IOs just to throw them in the trash when I want to upgrade them.

What I do instead is use Single-Origin Enhancements all the way up to level 47, at which point I generally respec and frankenslot with level 50 IOs. Those last three levels are epic.
  5. For what it's worth, I like the Cathedral of Pain and I think it's good for something to be challenging.

If you slap some half-strung PuG of 24 people together (some of whom generally wander around Pocket D uninvited asking for spots in case someone doesn't show up) and end up failing, I wouldn't automatically point the finger at the trial itself.

Having said that, there are some demonstrated errors in the trial. Most notably the difficulty of dealing damage to the Lanaruu Aspect, and the Aspect's regeneration rate in general.

While I don't agree with cherry picking which temporary powers can be used in the trial, I'm honestly not too upset that people aren't allowed to use the nukes for this task. The problem, on the other hand, is that even groups who know what they're doing and have good coordination are still unable to complete it.

The overall encounter is very enjoyable, but the Aspect just won't go down. Decreasing its Regeneration, or maybe just switching Arch-villain out with the Reichsman class wholesale (think Lord Winter) would go a long way to addressing the issues players are facing in Cathedral of Pain.

The Random Number God and I aren't exactly on speaking terms. My first thought was to go pick off Prisoner bosses in Brickstown, and my chat log later showed that it took 37 of those before I got a tip. So I went to Dark Astoria and started killing zombies, but for all my trouble and, again according to the chat log, 184 random minions later, I didn't think that was my cup of tea either.

I wound up in Moth Cemetery due to the abundance of bosses, and the big, tightly-packed groups are always nice for a well placed Tip Mine. Nowadays, tips take in the order of 30 seconds each.

Meanwhile, in Sharkhead Isle, it's not unusual for me to get tips off of three consecutive enemies:

  7. Yeah, my character's 50 and he's toe-bombing Banished Pantheon in Dark Astoria. Trip Mine deals with entire spawns.
  8. I'm only using that character for Hero Merits right now. Why waste the time doing missions when I can nuke zombies instead?
  9. Trip Mine? More like Tip Mine, am I right!?

I finally found a way to get tips hero-side that isn't mind-numbingly tedious.

I'm not entirely certain that failures are factored into the reward calculations; only completions. If that's the case, then only the handful of groups able to pull if off are counting, and they'll more than likely do it quickly.

  13. Slot Endurance Reduction in place of your Recharge Enhancements and none of your characters will ever need Stamina. (-:

Though in the event you do want a free refill before Domination recharges, you may want to consider Hibernate from Ice Mastery or Leviathan Mastery.
  14. The Dominator epic power Ice Mastery/Sleet is being canceled out by the NoPhase applied by casting Hibernate from the same powerset. Even if Sleet is recharged, it cannot be cast after the first 30 seconds that NoPhase is active and until it goes away.

Same-level SOs at level 30 are less effective than common IOs, but +3 SOs are more powerful.

I agree. To someone who is not interested in PvP and just rushes headlong into PvP zones for badges, ganking is certainly what it feels like, and that's the context they'll use when complaining about it.

It's not at all why PvP was changed.

I'm not certain what the best approach would be, but this does sound better than letting people zoom by and dealing irretaliable (it should totally be a word!) damage by exploiting the powers' activation times. As far as the I13 changes are concerned, travel suppression is one I fully condone and support.

    A) Don't get close if you're a ranged damage dealer. You don't do that in PvE do you?
    B) Seeing as how you can't Assassin Strike someone while jumping past them at high speed, I wouldn't say it was ever much of an issue.

    I agree completely.

The quote I remember was something more along the lines of "It's a bunch of people with Super Speed and Super Jump, and every so often one of them dies." That's quite a bit removed from "A bunch of people getting ganked while hunting badges." And I'd agree that if some yellow glowy balls bouncing around was what PvP looked like, then there was a definite problem with it.

I don't fault the devs for what they were trying to do: they wanted to make PvP more accessible so that some casual person with a PvE build could wander into a PvP zone and do reasonably well. I disagree with their solution, though, where they nerfed the ever-loving crap out of everyone.

Regardless, that has nothing to do with badges. Maybe it was badgers who were complaining, but the changes in PvP weren't made for the purpose of badge hunting.

Remove "while badge hunting" from this sentence and I'll agree wholesale.

    The Best Build

That would fall under both laziness and timidness, I think. Someone who's not willing to, say, scroll down and find the solution to their problem. To them, it's important enough to merit its own thread, and specific attention from the people who know about things and stuff.

    The Best Build

There is no best power or powerset. There is no best tank, or best farmer, or best damage dealer. There is no best way to get to 50, and no best PvP toon. There is no best build.

    Words to live by.

But not a week goes by without a new thread asking about the "best" whatever it is they want. The psychological implications are intriguing, to say in the least, and it got me thinking (which happens from time to time). What makes people pursue these notions and constantly ask for input from those of us in the know? The game's so easy as it is; why is a "best" even required in the first place?

I've been observing this trend for a while, and I think I've gotten a pretty good idea of why people seek out the ultimate build. I've figured that most of the time someone queries what's best, they fit into one or more of the following categories:

    Some People are Lazy

You know how it is: you want your first level 50 ever, and that Defender you rolled up when you started playing and refuse to team with (no social skills maybe; this is an internet game) just isn't cutting it for you. Rather than stick it out, swallow your pride and maybe join your first team, you just say "screw it" and ask people who care about express tickets to get you to Fiftytown in less time than the average interval between DOOOM threads.

It may be a misplaced perception of achievement; that there's some kind of award or special status that is bestowed on you with level 50... but there isn't. Maybe it was the epic archetypes back in the day, but we've seen how that goes: people rarely feel they were worth the level 50 and anyone who's anyone would have known that ahead of time. I think a better explanation is that people forget this is a video game: play it to have fun; don't fool yourself and focus your time and energy on achieving things that, in the real world, bear no significance whatsoever.

But whatever the case, some people just really want level 50 and they're not willing to spend the time to get it. So they come to us, asking about the build that can defeat the most enemies the fastest, or in some other way yields a higher XP:time ratio than any other. They don't ask for advice; they ask for builds, and they go out and make that build verbatim and pretend they're enjoying themselves. It's fun to screw with these people by suggesting builds that are arguably less than optimal.

    Some People Sell Money

This one's not really much of an issue for City of Heroes anymore, but it used to be. There are these companies out there who make their living on selling people in-game money. Remember that whole "no real-world significance" bit? It applies here too, and grubby hands are capitalizing on people's laziness. The higher-level characters can make the most money the fastest, and when that's how you get food into your mouth every day, you tend to take it seriously.

But since these companies aren't too keen on spending money, you'll be hard-pressed to find any of their employees learned enough in the art of gameplay to actually do their own research and determine the best builds for their needs themselves. So instead, they wind up back in the laps of the paying customers, begging for scraps of info to help them do their own jobs.

Be careful when replying to these "best build" threads, because the person on the other side of the internet just might be asking you to help them steal from you. The moral of the story? Don't be lazy! If a fool and his money are soon parted, then it's depressing just now much money that fool has to part with; and the recipient isn't all that outstanding a citizen either.

    Some People are Timid

There's this type of person out there who got picked on a lot in school (even got picked on in home school, the loser) and is so terrified of making mistakes or not looking cool to the cool kids that they throw away any semblance of an identity and just try to find some kind of flow to go with. All their lazy, money-selling friends are tearing it up on the battlefield, and they're still sitting there wondering if it was worth it to put that fifth Training Enhancement in Rest.

The solution? Get educated, of course! Consult The Players' Guide to the Cities; visit The Mentor Project; get some help so you know what the crap you're doing! But no, that requires initiative. That requires effort without any guaranteed success. Surely there's a better way?

Well, practically, no there isn't a better way, but in the mind of the timid player, there is: ask the cool kids for a cool build. These people are immune to logic and understanding: all they want is something that will make them unconditionally successful, and everything else just goes in one ear and out the other. If you haven't noticed the running trend here, it's this: people who ask for best builds tend to be more focused on achieving something than enjoying the game for what it's worth.

Some People Don't Ask for Best Builds

Ooh, curveball. Bet you weren't expecting that! No, the mathematical inverse of those mentioned above are the ones who know the game and what they can do. These people don't tend to ask for builds, because frankly, they're busy designing builds of their own. I'd like to say that this accounts for the vast majority of players, which is a good thing.

People generally know what they want, and people are aware that once they get to level 50, there's not a lot left to do and part of the fun is just starting anew with a powerset combination they've never used before. Others like to test their limits, and take an unorthodox approach or just make something completely awesome.

These are the people who enjoy the game. These are the people who aren't trying to obtain some imaginary achievement. These people make the best builds: the ones that are fun.

I think you missed the part where I said "petless." No Henchmen; therefore, no Bodyguard. I was a petless Mastermind, and I beat a Tanker who had Granite Armor running.

You want more people to PvP? It's not gonna happen so long as PvP Math suuuuucks.

Supremacy only affects the Henchmen, actually.

My Mastermind has 1144.52 HP, but I was hitting the Tanker with -Dmg and -ToHit debuffs. No heavies were involved.

None of the changes they made make badges easier, since the only real PvP badges revolve around defeating other players, which, if you really want a badge, you'll set up a little group in the corner of a map somewhere.

B Samson and I did that for the Reputation badges. We let the PvPers to themselves.

The rest of the "PvP" badges are PvE badges in PvP zones: Bloody Bay firebases, Warburg nukes, time-spent, Recluse's Victory heavies and AVs... All of that is arguably made worse by the PvP changes, which dumped offense and defense to the point that petless Masterminds can beat Granite Tankers (I did just that while farming pillboxes, so it's not an exaggeration.)

Saying that PvP was changed for whiny badgers is laughably wrong.
