  2. I really hate the shriek too. I don't remember GFS having the shriek but I've respec'ed out of that a long time ago.
  3. I like Whisky_Jack's build quite a bit, but it differs from yours by having different pool picks, which may or may not fit your concept. His is far easier to soft cap (get to 45% in each position) largely because he has tough (so he can slot the Steadfast Res/Def - 3% def) and combat jumping which gives around 3% defense when slotted. Combat jumping also allows you to slot Blessing of the Zephyrs for some easy range and AoE damage.

However, your build has neither CJ or tough but instead has aid self, which is a valid choice, but one that I find isn't that necessary for a soft cappped build. Aid self is great if you're into soloing AVs without inspirations (like many people in this forum like to do), but if your ambitions are different, then it's largely unneeded (keep 2-3 greens handy). On my soft capped builds, I can go a very long time without using inspirations and I do not have aid self. I ascribe to the philosophy of having good native regen and some resistance on soft capped defense characters instead of using the tricorder.

Here's your build with some minor modifications and keeping your pool and power choices. I'm not completely happy with it because I'm sure it could be tweaked further, but it's the best I can do with the limited time I have this morning. It's soft capped to melee/range but only has 37% to AoE (which stinks when you're fighting things like Jack in Irons (foot stomp) and some AVs). In those cases, use 1 small purple before the fight.

This isn't going to help but fireball is extremely good.

However, if you're going to focus on AV soloing then I'll agree with Santorican that body mastery is better. However, my build can do well pretty well with AVs as well and fireball adds quite a bit of oomph to your AoE damage. However, there's no real wrong choice here, just a decision on what you want to focus on.
  7. I have in-game friends who are perfectly happy with 20M at level 50. They buy SOs, the occasional -kb or stealth IO and are completely happy just with that. They have zero desire to slot inventions, not because they don't understand them, but because they're team oriented and IO set bonuses help their builds far less in those types of situations. They actually tend to be more generous than I am since they giveaway any purples or high value recipes that drop to people that need/want them.

Meanwhile I'm like Catwhoorg in that I have characters which have IOs that exceed 10B+ inf if you count their market value. For some of my builds, 20M is merely the difference in the variation of the current market price and not a significant amount. I tend to solo a lot so I prize what inventions can bring.

    You're doing it wrong.

You'd never farm +4s...that's too slow. Your sweet spot will depend largely on build/investment, but most settle on +2s.

Also, farming for influence is super inefficient. You're pretty much at the mercy of the random number generator for good purple drops. If you don't get them, then your influence generation is terribad.

If your goal is to make influence then learn to market, and farm on the side. I'll never get people who make a fire/kin for farmin' uber loot and find that it's largely a tedious and inefficient exercise.

Here's my first attempt on trying to perma them both, though I didn't seem to reach it. Please give me your input on what to do to fix this!! =)
It is impossible to get perma hasten without purples on a spines/regen scrapper. I'd set your expectations to something far more modest. Perma-DP with modest amounts of defense (either smash/lethal or melee) is very possible to do without purples and PvP sets.

I don't have the time for a full critique, but I will tell you that you have a number of things in your build that are mis-slotted. IH, Instant Healing and Reconstruction are badly slotted. The regen secondary doesn't really get that much help from regen set bonuses and it seems that's what you were slotting for. Exchange out the Numinas for the most part with Doctored Wounds. Also, going for range defense isn't that optimal since you have mostly PBAoE attacks (spine burst, quills). You can take slots from those powers that grant that and shift them to melee (or smash/lethal) defense or go for recharge bonuses.

Casual is a mindset and an approach to the game, not temporal measurement of time played.
I wouldn't consider someone who played the game 30+ hours a week to be casual by any definition. So I disagree. There is some correlation between time played and this intrinsic quality that we refer as "casual".

I've been very gratified about how this contest turned out, the quality of the costumes, and the sheer amount of participants. I do have a couple of more ideas for future contests, but I'll wait on those to allow the Virtue forum to return to its regular programming. As it was, I felt that the Virtue forum goers have been gracious about allowing this huge thread to intrude in their space.

So I wanted to thank the Virtue forum goers for their patience and support. It has been a pleasure in hosting / judging this contest.

I think you might be obsessing over the wrong thing.
This isn't necessarily true. A while ago, I started a thread in the General forum asking for a definition of a casual player and whether or not the forum goers would fit that definition. My definition was that a casual player didn't play that many hours per week and didn't focus on the market.

The responses I got back indicated that while many self described "casual players" didn't play that many hours, many indeed worked the markets. In fact, they felt that the market actually allowed them to be competitive with their more active brethren since they could gain inf while being offline. "Casual" players do play the market and many players who play hundreds of hours don't.

I really dig this costume, especially the pin-stripes, the boots, and the symbol. Only thing is that head is too out there. It looks like he has blue skin and hair, and that threw me off.

Probably would have went with this one by a small margin over Matt's, even though I don't like the metal boots.

Two of those were on our short list of choices. So maybe we're not as insane as you may think we are. Even though we didn't end up with the choice you wanted.

And I agree all three of the costumes you picked were very strong costumes.
  20. I'm in game at the moment, so if any of the winners see this, I'll happily give you your winnings. I'll be online for the next couple of hours or so.

There's just not much in it that makes me think, "oh yea, this is Synapse". But I'm a sucker for homages and value finding a balance between updating and staying true to the original.

Still, there were some more original versions out there that I think would have been better choices than nitpicking over small details of the obvious spandex with lightning pattern that was done by so many.
Heh. This sounds exactly like us when we were arguing about some of the choices.

I'd be interested to know which one you would pick if you couldn't pick your own.

As I related in the other post, a number of the final choices came down to the choice that is the next best if you couldn't have your favorite. I'm not trying to make excuses or anything, but if you eliminate a clear favorite or sometimes the top 2 choices, the decision making can get a lot tougher.

Ultimately, "best" is often subjective. You realize that whether you think that the criteria should be best balance of an update and a homage, or the costume that best goes against type but still is recognizable, it's a set of decision making blinders that you put on yourself...those blinders will be different for just about anybody.

Yes. Unfortunately, just a pat on the back. I listed them just so the participants would know that the entry was highly considered. It's also an indication that the entry scored very well with at least one of the judges, maybe more than one. I've actually had other PMs about this issue so don't feel bad about asking it. It's better that I'm clear about it.

You have no idea how many times I wanted to go socialist on you all and just split the entire 2.1B into 50 small prizes and declare everyone a winner. However, that's a cop out so we forced ourselves to make the decision that we publicized.

The quality of the entries was beyond anything any of us expected and, as you can imagine, made judging extremely difficult.

Aside from the action shot, I don't see what this winner has over any of those other Synapses. And if I saw a picture of the original synapse and that one, I'm not sure I would really make a connection between the two.

I'm not trying to hate on Hydro. His fantasy edition was awesome and definitely deserved one of the top spots. I just don't see much originality compared to other entries or homages to the original in his 2010 synapse.
Contests like these really boil down to subjective opinion no matter how much we attempt to add objectivity to them. We had an extremely difficult time with some of the entries because they looked so close. A better example than Synapse were the Numina entries, just about all of them had the magic bolero cloak for example and were primarily done in white/purple, including the winner. Manticore was similarly problematic and it's the one individual category where the judges deadlocked and a run off had to be used. Even then the best we were able to come up with was a tie.

As for this particular Synapse, it came down to color choice, the expression of the character, the seemlessness of the costume instead of discrete boots, etc. Those are all subjective criteria. So it boils down to whether or not it grabbed the attention of the judge (i.e., did we like it).

I will let you know that some of the winners won on the basis of a majority vote versus consensus. If we had to go for a consensus on every single choice, the contest would be literally impossible for us to decide. Many times we had several favorites, or several close entries and the winner was decided by "if you can't have your favorite and had to vote for what one of the other judges picked, what would you pick" style of decision making.

Hopefully, this gives you at least a partial view on what we tried to do.
