Which is why characters like Richard and Ellie seem to be angst-magnets - because they can (to a certain extent) laugh off things that other people would be afraid of, it takes a delve into their psyche to find out about their hopes, dreams and fears.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Absolutely spot on. Ellie IS pretty overpowered. That's what 3+ years of RPing will do to you, so it's counterbalanced by her being a creature of high emotion. She has several weaknesses which are a direct consequence of what she is, and these can be extremely debilitating, even potentially fatal. She's also somewhat unstable as well, not being as resilient of mind than your average hero; hell, during the Requiem War she ended up having a breakdown due to shell shock. Things like this enable me to make it a lot harder for her to break peoples plots, as if it looks likely, I just break her.

And of course, right now, she's REALLY broken... Almost terminally in fact... Thanks SG!
  2. Another place where game mechanics should be ignored... Damage scaling over level ranges just... doesn't work ICly... It's the one thing that kinda makes me wish all mobs used Rikti invasion code...
  3. [ QUOTE ]
And it also makes secret identities hell. Azure Arrow uses a moulded suit to make him look a bit more different physically to his alter ego, covers his face, puts on a different voice, uses a different kind of aftershave to mask his scent and even puts on a different attitude and walk, and all it will take is someone with that kind of ability to see him and Shay Bennet to point out that they're one in the same.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Remember when Ellie accidentally called Nevermore by his real name at GG? A few days later, he was wearing a pheremone masking device.

Yes, for many people she DOES know their ID's if she's met both, though scent is a far better key for her than a persons aura as she has to concentrate to see that, it's not an "always on" ability, unlike her nose.

These days, though, she's discrete enough to not actually TELL anyone that she nows their secret...
  4. Actually... Security level is a totally valid RP concept. I think you're getting mixed up with power level, a separate entity. Your SL is a measure of the trust the city puts in you. Your CL is a measure of your overall strength. Both can be used quite easily in RP, but SL being the far more useful one.

Ellie, for example, is partly an energy being, and is able to "see" a persons bio-electrical signature (or aura - Kirlian photography sort thing), and from that make a reasonable estimation of a persons strength. Of course, if they're suppressing it, then she'll make a false judgement, but generally she gets it fairly close. Of course, I make no claims that all Kheldians can do this; after all, Ellie's unique in that she's a mix of three lifeforms, so perhaps it's a side effect of that?

There's only a few things that could stop him, really (yes, I know what they are)

    [/ QUOTE ]
An insanely powerful gravity controller, perhaps?

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Naah. She's dead.

Easiest way to stop Richard is to throw a naked woman at him.
  6. [ QUOTE ]

If we all suspend our disbelief, and accept the official story, and attempt to avoid breaking that, and give at least a nod toward the game-mechanics, then any player-canon we create can be accepted by the majority - it becomes a case that there's a problem only when we contradict each other.

    [/ QUOTE ]

So, pretty much all the time then.
  7. Then perhaps get someone to proof read for you? Sorry, but these are basic rules you would have learned when you were in junior school!

Tell you what, I'll rewrite it for you to show you what I mean.

    *********************************************

    Chapter 1

    Lab 6

Once again, Alexander Detrich went into the lab. It was Saturday; another simple day at work and he muttered softly to himself as he walked through the corridors. Nobody else worked on a Saturday, except William of course; the lab's flunky. He failed in everything that the lab sent him to do, but you had to feel sorry for the kid. He worked 7 days a week, and was paid minimum wage.

Alexander slowly walked into lab six, and shut the door behind him. Moving over to a locked cabinet, he unlocked it carefully, checking for signs of tampering as he did so, and opened the doors. Inside, several sealed jars rested, filling with a mixture of chemicals, his discovery.

A strange smell permeated the air as he unsealed one of the bottles, not unlike the smell of hot ash, and Alexander wrinkled his nose. He wasn't completely sure what caused the odour, after all; none of the compounds he'd used had a similar odour.

    *********************************************

There, see? Much easier to read and understand. I eliminated the part with William because it was totally superfluous, and indeed, the question made absolutely no sense whatsoever. I suggest you look up what the properties of Mercury are, as no scientist would ask such a daft question.

It also had several problems in it which weren't exactly easy to fix. Such as how did Alexander know it was William knocking at the door before answering it? What authority does Alex have to ask what Will was doing out of his lab, if he's just a lab flunky?

The piece needs a lot more to it also; where you left it, and indeed where I left it also, is pretty much still at the very start of whatever is going on. This isn't a chapter; it's not even a page. Before posting, you need to give your stories some kind of substance, some reason to make the reader WANT to come back to read more, and your story doesn't have ANY of that.

I suggest that before you post any more fiction, you actually finish it first. At the very least, write a complete chapter, giving each a proper closing or break point, rather just leaving it dangling nowhere.
  8. Then I suggest you learn some basic rules of the English language.
  9. Paragraphs and sentence structure; you should use them.

Had a PB on the team last night. PB left after a while. Couple of hours later and we're still getting Void and Quantum Spawns. It's like the Kheld with team flag gets set and just never gets unset.

    [/ QUOTE ]

This is a long running bug that's been with us since I3. If ANY member of a team has teamed with a Kheld in their current play session, any team they're on is likely to get quants, voids and cysts. You have to relog to clear the flag.

Plus if CO was actually CoH2 I might be tempted, its not though its a wholly new game, the graphics, gameplay and engine are all new and not intended to copy CoH.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Actually, going by current screenies and those videos, CO is using a fair number of video and audio assets from CoX... Possibly they're placeholders for final stuff to be added later, but don't count on it.
  12. [ QUOTE ]
you dont understand ,champions online its COX 2 ,same company ,more expirence ,more budget ,and alot of improvemnt ,why do you hate cryptic?becosh of them you play cox ,ncsoft just keeping it alive ,i dont hate ncsoft i mean i fill sorry for them about the money issues that they have ,but cox cant survive this 2 new games ,most of the cox fans hate ncsoft ,they will go to the new cryptic game ,and dcuo ,will DC ...

    [/ QUOTE ]

What makes you think we don't understand it? It's quite possible we have a far better understanding of what will happen than you, you know. Ever considered that you're wrong?

Sure, CO is what would originally have been CoX 2, which then became MUO, and then CO; but that does NOT mean it would be better. Jack Emert showed time and again with CoX that he isn't interested in what the players want to see, and that's going to continue in CO as well, count on it.

As for NCSoft just "keeping CoX alive". Look at the updates since Cyptic left the picture, look at all the QoL changes we've had since. Hell, if Jack were still in charge, we STILL wouldn't have the real numbers... NC are investing large amounts of money in the game, but these things take time before they become readily apparent. 2009 is going to be a BIG year for CoX, you'll see.

Right now, people are doom mongering because it's been a long gap between updates, pretty much the longest actually... Of course that's not a good thing, but things WILL pick up soon.

  14. (QR)

Guys, be nice! It's pretty clear from his posts that English isn't his first language, so cut him a little slack. OK, so I think his message is completely and utterly wrong, but you shouldn't just dismiss him because of HOW he phrased it.

@Arigold, to address your original post...

    [ QUOTE ]

why ncsoft purchased city of heroes/villians from cryptic if they did know that cryptic is developing a new super hero mmorpg?i dont want to be rude but we all know when Champions Online[the new super hero mmorpg by cryptic]will releash so its the dead of COX ,then nc soft will close the servers of cox if the game was still by cryptic i guess they will make Champions online accounts to play COX on free ,but ncsoft purchased the game ,and we are all doomed ,ohh by the way i understand that DC Universe Online will releash before Champions Online ,that bummer that SOE will kill COX and not Cryptic ,the company that create COX .

    [/ QUOTE ]

NCSoft purchased the game due to (probably), not having sufficient control over an IP that they saw great potential in, and were working with a developer who were committing more and more resources to OTHER products.

CO is an unknown entity; all we have so far are some screenies and some blurry and buggy videos. From what we've seen, it's going me a completely different type of game to CoH; intended mainly for console gamers and designed primarily for joypad play. Looking at it, it's going to be twitch style gameplay which doesn't generally suit MMO's. Of course, we'll have to see just how it DOES work in reality, so there's just no way we can say that it will be better than CoX.

DCU looks even MORE like a twitch game, so is just as unlikely to cause CoX too much worry, but again, we'll have to see. There are big things in the works.
  15. Pocket D is kind of a tricky one really. The game canon tells us that there can be no fighting there, but just how do you stop it? Sure there could be some kinda of technomagical field that prevents use of powers (also non-offensive abilities work), but how does it stop you smacking someone in the mouth?

Personally, I allow physical contact such as punches or kicks; but disallow powers use. Makes more logical sense to me as otherwise, if physical contact were prevented, then why would you even go to a nightclub?
  16. [ QUOTE ]
The worst bit of player canon storyline I can remember was probably FFM's uber-Nictus, but I think he can argue a case for even that, it just wasn't the kind of thing I'd have done.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Hey! I've seen FAR FAR worse than him, and in my defense, I was relatively new to RP at the time.

He CAN be made to work though, with a few changes... After all, who says what he claimed was true? Bear in mind though, that when he was around, ALL he did was <bleep> Ellie up, and wind Jester up. And explain to me how the latter was a bad thing?
  17. God modding is defined as forcing others to accept your player-canon. As long as they have the option not to, they're not being god modded. The events at UV plaza only affected those who chose to be involved, and indeed, its very existence only affects those who choose to be affected by it; ergo it cannot be god modding.

If we take your view, then my character Ellie was never married to her aprtner (as the game mechanic doesn't allow it), and she wasn't recently widowed (as the game mechanic doesn't allow it).
  18. [ QUOTE ]

Hence the fiction part, you know like in DC or Marvel, where you get the whole obsidian age, age of Apocalypse stuff, stuff that simple couldn't happen in main stream because when you get down to it several characters could just single handily prevent it, Captain Marvel, Dr Fate, Franklin Richards, Dr Strange etc

    [/ QUOTE ]

As a piece of fiction there's nothing at all wrong with it; though I'd suggest NOT placing it at public RP locations. As an RP plot, I wouldn't advise doing it.
  19. [ QUOTE ]
but FFM you where quite happy with for example ...the Unity plaza attack god moding the actions of major villian groups ...

which if taken as cannon means there is a new war in the city .. which effects everyone interactions UV and malta , the knives et al ...

    [/ QUOTE ]

How does that affect anyone? The Malta and KoA are mercenaries, they work for whoever pays them. Perfectly within the canon for them to take on such a job.

Also, it only affects people in the UV and NV groups, because it's plot intended only for them. No one else was affected.

    [ QUOTE ]

take Doc Mech new trolls .. creating a new race how god mode it that ......

    [/ QUOTE ]

Not really paying attention to that atm, have enough to do. CB asked a specific question though, so I answered it.

    [ QUOTE ]

take the attempt on the Zig to free tiger white .. you are creating cannon on how hard /easy it is to attack the Zig ..

    [/ QUOTE ]

Again, small scale RP affecting only those characters who CHOSE to take part. And we ALL know how easy it is to break out of the Zig; we have evidence in the CoV tutorial and all the escapes cons in Brickstown.

    [ QUOTE ]

your toons are still free to act .. and trying to ignore is a responce .. but that does not mean things cant happen ...it just changes the background colour from red to blue ...

    [/ QUOTE ]

My toons are free to act IF they can't be affected. Given CB gave some specific avoidance techniques, those of my chars without said gives ARE affected directly, hence are god modded. This is why RP on a world scale just doesn't work.

Look at the Requiem War the other year... Some people didn't want to take part; to them, it NEVER happened.
  20. Nope, because it wouldn't be happening as far as any of my characters are concerned. Sorry, but I'm not going to pay ANY attention to some god type character trying to dictate what's going on around my chars. As far as they're concerned, it's not happening.

I think you'll find it will be a common attitude too. What you're proposing is quite literally god modding. You're dictating how the game world is responding, forcing it on others; and lots of people just won't accept that.
  21. What would my characters do? Same as any other "god" character, ignore it or treat it like a loon if ignoring isn't possible.
  22. Have you tried a reboot? I used to get this from time to time in XP, and a reboot usually cleared it.
  23. It breaks the core rules of ALL power sets. Apart from HEATs, NO powerset has any kind of travel power; that's what the pools are for.
  24. I think that's EXACTLY like TP and Team TP, actually...

    Oh, and
