I was on that particular TPN with you, and while I was able to move after the "teleported out of Visualcorp" thing, I don't believe it was actual movement, it was the kind of thing that happens when you've Mapserver'd and the game client hasn't realized it yet, so you're moving on the client but the server is just laughing derisively. I snapped back to the Visualcorp entrance (ie, the client realized the server wasn't accepting movement updates) before getting booted entirely.

Some things involve recurring costs (Invention license, AE license, SSAs as they are released), but most of the stuff being touted as critical to basic game play can be purchased outright without having to subscribe. The game isn't technically "free" anymore--and such accounts become premium accounts as a result, unlocking other features without further cost--but it is still a lot less expensive than a monthly subscription. About the only thing unavailable is the Incarnate System, and I doubt that alone is much of a draw to go VIP for most freebie players anyway. Other carrots are needed to dangle in front of noses. You know, like Supergroup access.
All you need for Supergroup access as a freemium player is Tier 2, or basically right away once you pay for anything. The thing is, if the content of this review is an accurate representation of freebie player experience, then being completely shut out of Supergroup stuff makes you feel rather isolated and thus lowers the chance that you'll pay for anything, on account of you're likely to just leave.

I would put forward the idea that Supergroup access fits better as a loss leader - something you should expect to make no money off of whatsoever and which people will not buy for what it's really worth - in order to create a situation where freebie players feel more involved in the community and thus more willing to become regular customers. Also, it possibly creates a situation where your own existing customers are likely to be doing some of the "upselling" by talking in supergroup chat about various things that the freeb can only access by paying out.

However, the question of wether the review is representative of the common experience is an open one. Only Paragon Studios really knows wether they're happy with the conversion rate of freebies into freemiums or not. On the other hand, the opening of the forums suggests that the need for community involvement as a retention/upselling device is not entirely absent from their thinking.

Well, opening up supergroup membership and supergroup chat, certainly, even if they shouldn't be allowed supergroup leadership, rent paying, base editing, etc. There are tons of supergroups who will gladly evangelize the game if only given half a chance to do so, and - particularly for the exact sort of extroverted supergroup that's likely to invite newly minted freebies - the awesome supergroup bases are ads all in and of themselves.

That's a totally seperate issue from the idea of unlocking global chat in general.

Maybe it's the Pirate history badge (Swashbuckler) that doesn't give a progress bar. Since prior to Going Rogue, you could get 2 of the plaques - the ones in Siren's Call and Bloody Bay - as a hero, but not the rest. So it makes sense for the progress bar to be hidden, even though progress is still counted.

Supergroup items are unlocked for the SG, not for the player. You may have to re-create any craftable items (such as telepads) if you delete them and want them back, though.

This badge is stupid. Make it "Defeat 6 (or 10) of Malaise's Nightmares to earn this badge" and it will be much, much more bearable. As it is, it's like the old "Cage Fighter" badge in Arena before map selection was available. Just load in, exit and load in and exit and load in and exit over and over until you get your explore badge.

    Blech.
Also, mission-reset farming in general, for anything, makes me throw up a little. In my mouth.

If something can only be reliably earned via that method then it's not worth having. (I'm willing to grant a sole exception for badges which are accolade requirements.)

I do realize I would only need fire defense, so if possible, please help me improve overall recharge/damage and add some chance to hits wherever possible if removing other defenses is necessary. Much obliged!
I really think you're probably overthinking this in terms of build tweaking. You've already made the only vitally important build choice to fill your objective: ie, you are a fire/fire brute.

The most useful possible thing you could do as a newly minted 50 to increase your, er, brutality is to add Incarnate abilities (Spiritual Alpha at least to Tier 3 to get the level shift and your choice of Interface ability to add delicious sprinkles to the murder cake), assuming of course that you're VIP.

You're sacrificing the ability to do anything else on the altar of increasingly marginal performance gain. Build normally - you'll still be able to solo +4/x8 fire farms, trust me. You'll just have to stay awake for it, is all, and occasionally partake of the delicious skittles... er... inspirations that drop like rain onto your head as you're igniting half the world.

It's 400 rep for the personal PVP badge, and 500 kills for the Fusion Generator plans... iirc.

Besides that, what is your opinion on the best primary, or top few, and why?

The way i see it, Willpower really thrives off of being in a big crowd, and if you can somehow stop incoming damage, survivability really skyrockets.

From my experiences with SS/WP, I found that for example, using Footstomp was amazing for survival, because you could get the full huge regen bonus from a group of mobs, with none of the damage for a few seconds when they get knocked down.

I'm also unsure of which direction to take WP when it comes to IOs. I don't have much influence, since this will be only my 3rd character on this account. Is it worth trying to enhance regen, def, or resist? I don't think i'd be able to cap defense, given the influence i have.
Titan Weapons seems to have some really good synergies with /WP, in terms of mitigation and working well with /WP's need to be in a big crowd.

Technically you'd keep it lower than that - the improved Exemplar system lets you use powers several levels higher than your exemplar level, so you'd keep it down to... 15? 16? I forget.

But go further and you're travelling back in time to when she was just a nameless minion. Of course she's going to lose the marks of having "made it" as a highly trained Night Widow assassin.

You're not going to be spending a lot of time Ex'd below 15 in any event... unless you have an unquenchable craving for Death From Below.

One of the biggest "game changing things that I didn't expect to be" was just powerset recoloring. It makes the world less artificial seeming, I guess, and adds the perception of depth and random weirdness that a world filled with random lunatics wielding the power of gods ought to have.

Part of this is server specific, and relates a lot to how often trials are run. If you're on a server where tons of +3s are just falling out of the woodwork to run trials, badge runs aren't completely uncommon, but if your server struggles to keep up with the people wanting to run trials on their +0s, well forget about it.

Might as well have badges you can only get by performing an action on a specific server.

Yeah, the bases were definitely something that must have had people on the development side beating their head against the wall. I mean, they were aimed at PvP, so you had to lock the editor down in a lot of ways to try and make sure that bases would be fair ground to fight in, but then after putting that restriction in... the base raid system didn't even work reliably. And this after a massive amount of development time and effort and a bunch of promotional focus was spent on the whole deal. So neither the people who just wanted "social housing" nor the people who liked PvP were really happy with it.

On the plus side, if they still do have any regrets over bases, the cure is a quick look through the "post your base images" thread. Some of the other problematic things mentioned in this thread may have resolved as kind of bittersweet at best, but the stuff people have managed to do with the base editor (clunky though it may still be) is all sweet, all the time.

Particularly with Titan Weapons you should go with something that has good synergy (or just minimizes weapon redraw like Willpower) over 'cheapness'. You can always get more inf, but you can't respec a new secondary (well, without starting over).

Spout is awesome, though. Leviathan all the way if those are your two choices. I mean, +40% hp sounds cool and all, but as a Plant/Storm I can't help but think that if things are able to attack you heavily as opposed to flailing around helplessly in a stew of all kinds of summoned nonsense then things have already gone horribly wrong and +40% hp will not be enough.

However, I have never been able to obtain Marketeer or Fashion Designer. The Trading House doesn't flash the day job icon. You should also be able to get Clubber, since you can get to Pocket D from Praetoria's Studio 55 even if you're below level 20.

No, I mean - getting UN action against the Rikti or Praetoria is easy. Would you like to not be destroyed by aliens [y/n]? And the aliens don't get to vote! Getting coherent action against a UN member state is another matter, particularly since in a comic book world there's probably a whole bloc of nations who are engaged in metahuman shenanigans, just not on as large a scale as Recluse.

However, the Vanguard's scope is limited. It's official position on Arachnos seems to be "stay out of our way and let us do our jobs."
It's easy to deploy your pet army against enemies who don't have representatives at the UN.

But Vanguard is certainly kept plenty busy with existing extradimensional threats in any event.

  25. Generally the two things that will help you most are +Recharge and defense. The "ultimate power" goal would be to soft-cap defense, which will take all the inf in the universe but make you virtually invincible. A lesser goal is just to grab as much +Defense as you can get while you're slotting other things.

For the shields, I generally 3-slot, two resist IOs and a Resistance/Endurance IO (from whichever set is cheapest to find on the market).

Healing flames gets 5-slotted with Doctored Wounds for +5% global recharge.

Temperature Protection does not get slotted. Put a Steadfast Protection Knockback Resistance in there.

Burn you can slot with Damage/Recharge IOs, cutting the slots down to 4 (or even 3).

With these slots you're freeing up, you can 5-slot Rise of the Phoenix. Stop laughing - the Disorient IO sets are cheaper than a lot of others, so you can go with Stupefy for +Recharge on the cheap, or even the purple set if you want to be more spendy.

Then the question is how to slot your melee attacks. Touch of Death (6 slots) if you want defense, or Crushing Impact (5 slots) if you want Recharge. The latter is much cheaper.

In general you'll find that unless there's something awesome from 6-slotting a set, or you want to add a damage proc in there, 5 slots of set IOs in your attacks will beat 6 slots of generic IOs, which means you have more slots available to fill out other abilities. This probably changes your build plan.
