Part of me feels reluctant to lose the cap with this guy, but I suppose going for more than I have is overkill in most content still. Still, if anyone has more direct experience and wants to share it, I'd love to hear it.
I've run lots of trials on my Ice Tanker, who's got less DEF than your Shield tanker will, even if just from the typed/positional difference. She sits at 45% or so to Smash/Lethal and Energy/NE and hasn't had too many issues on BAF or Lambda. Every once in a while the RNG gets her, but for the most part she's been solid.

For a lot of the trials you're getting buffs on top of what you're providing. With Fitness becoming inherent more people are taking Leadership. VEATS do a lot of stuff with Leadership type powers. The AoE change for things like FF makes buffs easier. And of course a lot of people have their Destiny slot filled with Barrier. I've run BAF/Lambda where I've been at the HARD CAP of defense for a period of time, much less the soft cap.

Overall, I feel that with the most likely available buffs, and with the extremely small amount of content that incarnate cap is relevent to, you're much better off aiming for 45% and then moving to some other stat that will also help you in ALL content, not just those few incarnate missions. Regen, HP, Res, whatever.
  2. I use Mozy for backing up photos. I had a friend that lost a hard drive and all the digital photos of his kids as they've grown up, and I didn't want that to happen to us. Almost all of our kid pictures are digital!

I think we have around 70GB of stuff backed up with Mozy. It updates every night. It also makes all the backups available anywhere you can log on to their site, which means I can get to the photos almost anywhere. The service has been reliable (we're in our second year). I can't remember what the price is, I want to say it's 10-15 bucks a month for up to 120GB, but for us it's like insurance: we're willing to pay on the off chance something happens because it would be horrible to lose those pictures.

Mozy is backed by EMC, so I feel like they aren't amateurs when it comes to storage.

Anyways, one of my two main characters will now be a DP/Poison Corruptor. The set is a lot of fun so far, but... It really feels lacking outside of Weaken, Envenom, Poison Trap and Venemous Gas. There is a massive wasteland of BLAH powers right in the middle of the set that are just rehashed clones of other skills with some minor value added.
    • Ohh look, Elixer of Life! Reminds me of Mutation for some reason (to name but one rez)...
    • Ohh look, Antidote! Reminds me of every other mez protection (but not much can be done here)...
    • Ohh look, Paralytic Poison! Reminds me of Petrifying Gaze with no secondary effects...

In particular, I would love it if something could be addressed about the tier 5, 6 and 7 rehashes. Not much can be done with Antidote, but Elixer of Life and especially Paralytic Poison could use some attention. Perhaps Elixer of Life could have a moderate debuff occur around the rezed body (rez + moderate fallout) or grant a minor AoE buff for the team (rez + moderate Vengeance-type effect granting Regeneraton. +damage, and Toxic resistance). Paralytic Poison should have a desirable secondary effect, because it is too easily skipped.

I would also love to see the splash effect added to Alkaloid, with a heal at 1/2 the value being granted in an 8' radius around the primary target. The targeting geometry on Neurotixic Breath is great if you are standing 50 feet from the spawn, but terrible if you are within 15 feet of enemies, which is EXACTLY where you will want to be once you get Poison Trap and Venemous Gas. Let's widen the cone here so that the set has a bit more synergy with this regard.

    **Edited for a goof**
MM's get to add a tier 9 blah power on top of all that.

Happily I just leave my "feedback" on it to a time when it's more appropriate.
My impression was that each stage of the SSA would be something that would have to be purchased separately, but I'm not sure about that. If it is, then it might be more appropriate to review each stage separately as well. OTOH, if you pay one time to get all the SSA's, then I think it would be better to review them as a whole extended arc.

Happily, both types can leave legitimate feedback.

I didn't like the level 20 thing either. The arc was OK, but very short. Certainly nothing I'd recommend anyone spend actual money on. Villain side was better. The maps were fine. Vigilantes and Rogues get much poorer rewards.

It wasn't "eh", but it wasn't much more than "good".

Heh, for all the grinding that goes into getting Incarnate stuff you can only use it in way less than 1% of the game.

The arc was good, but I didn't like the level 20 thing either. It was short, I sure wouldn't be ponying up any real money for this.

What happens if you repeat the arc? What rewards repeat?

I mean, come on. I'd love to play the set, but jesus. Whenever I go to level my poison, I think "Oh man, gonna get closer to 38 so I can get that sweet PBAOE debuff!", but then I realize...Oh man, I gotta get to 38 before I can use that sweet PBAOE debuff. There's not really anything this set does that radiation doesn't also do, and better. At least until you hit level 38, and by then, you praise the gods that they have granted you such respite.

You're not really killing gobs of AVs during normal leveling at 1-37. (And even when you do, it doesn't matter because the debuffs don't stack.)
Dark also eclipses Poison, for AV's or not, by about level 10. Darkest Night, Tar Patch, and the Dark heal are pretty much just as effective as all of Poison (never mind adding in the rest of Dark). Plus the Dark stuff is nice big AoE's.

I've got a Poison MM that I like a lot, but I'm really disappointed that when Poison did get some attention because of the proliferation the changes they made, especially to MM's, were so incredibly minor. I'm thinking that was Poison's big chance, and it won't get any more attention for years.

EDIT: Forgot to add, Envenom does stack with itself, but it's only a certain part of it. The -regen part. The rest doesn't stack.
  8. I did a comparison between Axe and Mace a long time ago, and Mace comes out on top IMO. Mace's cone hits twice as many foes for starters, but Mace also, oddly, has more consistent knockdown than Axe, and that's supposed to be Axe's thing.

I'll see if I can dig it up. But really comparing Axe and Mace isn't all that productive. Better to compare with something like Stone Melee or SS. A top performer.

I still think the max foes on Pendulum (180 degree cone, max foes 5) and Cleave (20 degree cone, max foes 10) were swapped at some point. Why in the WORLD would you give a 20 degree cone a max of 10 foes, and a 180 a max of 5? Baffling.

Axe isn't bad, not at all, but it is very very solidly mediocre. Mediocre performance on a set that shares animations with two other sets in the game makes for a pretty non-tempting set unless you're working with a theme. Really what needs to happen is that both Axe and Mace should be brought up to par with sets like Stone Melee or SS.

I think there's a redraw issue that effects Axe and Mace too, but I can't remember the details.

  10. Dang, no love for Electric? Maybe I'll do that then, just to be contrary!

I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be able to do Shield. If I didn't have to carry a shield I would, but I just can't get past that (totally understandable) limitation.

I've already got an SR scrapper, an SR Brute, and a Widow (which is very close to SR). I really really like SR, and would absolutely recommend it, but I want to do something different.

WP seems to have everything going for it. Low graphics, which I like, and it's very effective. Just the taunt limitation would be the problem, and I could maybe slot some taunt in the aura to help that (and I certainly would take taunt). The stacking recovery would be awesome too.

Still, I find Electric Armor interesting. It seems to have a high ceiling. But maybe it's just the fascination of the unknown that makes it so tempting.

Thanks to all who have replied so far!

EDIT: I should add that my concept is pretty flexible. Right now I'm planning a red haired, freckled, Irish teen but will adapt her to fit the primary. WP would certainly be pretty easy to throw in there, but Elec shouldn't be much trouble either. She doesn't have to be "Natural".
  11. EDIT: Dang, I wish I could edit that thread title. Ugh. Sorry about that!

I'm planning a Street Justice tank when that set gets released but I'm really stuck on what I should do as a primary to go along with it. Right now I've got it down to three choices:

Willpower: I've played a WP tank up to about 30 and found it really effective. I worry a little about the lack of taunt though.

Electric Armor: I know very little about EA, other than a good guide I read over in the Brute forums. I've never played it. It sounds very effective and fun, and for me would be new.

Shield: I've never played Shield either, but find myself having a hard time getting past the whole having to use a shield part! Weird I know, but that just seems to pigeonhole my concept, where the other two don't. I don't think this one is going to make the cut, but I suspect it's going to be the best match with StJ.

Any thoughts on other primaries? Speculation on which primary (out of all of them, not just those three) might match up best with StJ?

Which of the three listed above would you choose, and why?

    Thanks!
  12. Especially if they tested it in beta and it wasn't working the way they thought. All they had to do was come out at that time and say "hey, we want it to work this way, but right now it's not. We're going to try and have this ready by launch, but we can't guarantee it." Expectations are then set accurately.

Now if they didn't test in beta until the day before release, well, I won't even go there.

Having a job in software support, it hasn't been an unusual occurrence to test a release of software, beta test a release of software, and then release said software only to find something broke we weren't unaware of. And I don't recall beta being set up to test lump sum token dumps to begin with.
Then don't set expectations that a feature "will" be in a product. Or be smart enough to test it in beta.

I've got a ton of tech support experience and setting accurate expectations with customers is one of the most important things to do to keep your customers happy. You're in tech support, you know this.

Paragon set the expectation. If they didn't test in beta, that makes this result even worse, because they might have been able to re-set expectations based on their beta failures.

There's one big thing that I think sets this issue apart from others Paragon has had. In this case their mistake has directly affected their customers' wallets. This isn't about a virtual power, or currency, or PvP, or ED or anything else that's "just a game". These were expectations set that resulted in customers spending real money that they might not have spent otherwise (as seen in this thread and others) only to find out that the reward they were expecting, based on Paragon's statements, wasn't going to happen.

Paragon gets its reward: a nice lump payment. The customer however doesn't get the same consideration back.

When you're dealing with people's money, real world money, you have to be more cautious about setting and fulfilling expectations.

There are always undiscovered bugs or whatever (although I would hope this was tested in beta). The bug here isn't the problem. The mishandled expectations hitting customers right in the wallet are.

The short answer was that continued proliferation of Power Customization was "not a current focus" because resources could be better used to make things like more powers. Later in the podcast they talk about the new Rocket Board and perhaps expanding to other board-related travel powers for purchase in the future.

Although I've become a bit more even-keeled about CoH development, this stance struck me as a little disingenuous. Hear me out.

Here's what I mean: for example, Travel Pool powers have no current customization. Fly poses are already in the game, but so tricky to use that they'll be beyond the grasp of many players. A lot of players would like to get rid of the Hasten pom-pom hands or the Super Speed blaze trail, but can't. And yet, NCSoft will be happy to sell you a Rocket Board power (and perhaps other similar powers in the future).

Obviously, this isn't an honest comparison, since the Rocket Board locks out other powers in use (whereas one can still attack when using Fly, Hover, etc.). Nevertheless, as demonstrated by the Intrepid Informer article, even using tricks like borrowing animations from Prestige Power Slide, it took quite a bit of dev time to produce the Rocket Board (perhaps not as much to add PwrCust to Fly). I'd argue that the main reason is because NCSoft can sell a Rocket Board, but they'd have to give out proliferated Power Customization for free (well, in regards to the Market anyhow).

My only hope is, that with all of the money coming into the game now that the Paragon Market has launched, that this issue will be revisited, especially for Travel Pool powers.

    Powers still lacking Power Customization:
    • Granite Armor
    • Pool Powers (Travel and otherwise)
    • Soldiers of Arachnos powers (besides weapons)
    • Kheldian Powers
    • Patron Powers
    • Epic Powers
    • Probably others I missed

Am I off base? What do you think about my assertion? How do you feel about the future of Power Customization?
Ice Armor too. IMO all the powersets should have low/no effects options.

I would put this stuff at the top of the list too. I would hope that it wouldn't be something we'd have to buy, but honestly, the above is one of the very few things I would consider spending money on over and above my subscription.
  15. I could just do a screenshot of one of my characters and put it in there then? This is very cool, and SO MUCH BETTER than that crummy Freedom screen.

Two weeks ago I bought a vacuum cleaner. In the online literature, on the floor model, and in the salesman's pitch it was presented to me that the vacuum cleaner had a hose attachment. Not something I'd use very much, not integral to the performance of the vacuum cleaner, additional functionality but not necessary. I bought the vacuum, presented my credit card, and they ordered one for me because they didn't have one in stock. If that vacuum cleaner shows up and it doesn't have a hose attachment, is it beyond understanding that I might ask where it is? If they tell me that their ads, floor model, and salesman were all incorrect and I don't get that attachment, what do you feel would be an understandable and logical reaction on my part? Should I pay them for the attachment in the hopes that my money will go to them providing the attachment for free in the future?

I go to buy a minivan. The dealership's ad says that I can get a free DVD player if I buy it. The salesman says I can get a free DVD player if I buy it. So I buy it, only to find, on delivery (or say, the day before delivery) that the minivan doesn't have the DVD player. Now, that's a luxury item, it's not integral at all to the purpose of the car. What do you feel would be an understandable reaction on my part in that case? Paying them to install a DVD player so that they can maybe have the resources to install that DVD for someone else in the future?

As a customer it is not wrong to expect a company to live up to the expectations that they themselves put forth. It is completely understandable. In the same way that I would expect that Sears would provide the hose attachment (I really did buy a new vacuum, my man card is already in the mail back to HQ ), or my mythical car dealership to provide the DVD player, I expect that Paragon will live up to the expectations that again, they themselves set.

Quite honestly, from the tone and text of Z's posts, he at least (and I suspect a lot of the Paragon crew) feels very badly about this last minute and mismanaged setting of customer expecatations. That's to their credit. No one has any cause to complain about my investment in the game, I've been here forever and I've bought all but one of the boosters. I've put my resources toward helping.

This isn't a world ending thing. It's not a ragequit, or even a rage. It's not something that has cost me any money, as I didn't extend my subscription yet. I think I'm reacting in a very understandable way. I'm not going to reward Paragon, much as I may love them, for failing to fulfull the expections that they set. I'm going to do what I would do at Sears or the car dealership. Well, not exactly, because in those cases I would be asking for my money back. In this case I'm simply going to hold off on giving Paragon more money.

Errr... what? She/he is certainly qualified to make their own decisions. There's no right or wrong or should.

Personally, I was going to do a year subscription tomorrow. Now I'm not. The expectation set by the company I was going to give the money to turned out to be false, and admitted as such by that company. I think that's a valid reason to withhold any larger investment and approach further investment cautiously. And, since it's my money, I'm the one that gets to decide, and my reasons are valid. Whether you think so or not is completely and utterly irrelevant.

This is poor. If Paragon didn't KNOW that was the way it was going to work, then they shouldn't have been "sharing" it as a certainty with players. This is real money stuff here, not virtual currencies, and anything dealing with subscribers' wallets should be treated cautiously. I hope anyone that changed their sub to get those tokens can still change back, or get refunded.

I'm not totally sure I understand the question but hey, this is the internet, I can still try to answer!

A defense debuff will subtract from your total defense. So if you get hit with a 5% defense debuff and your total melee defense is 48% then your resulting defense will be 43%. The extra defense above 45% is counted.

Note that SR has awesome defense debuff resistance. Right up to around 95% at level 50. That means that for SR defense debuffs have to be significant and stacking to really have a large effect.

    Hope that helps!

Personally I don't think it is. There's so many buffs flying around on the trials that I've hit the defense hardcap without running any of my defense toggles. The 59%, at this point, applies to so little of the content in the game that I think it's much more effective to concentrate on things that do apply over a wider area, like regen, damage, HP, etc.
