  1. For me this choice would depend highly upon what epic pool you took. If you're using body mastery, chances are you probably won't need cardiac and can either focus on rech or dmg. On the other hand, if you took something with an extra AoE attack like blaze then you would probably benefit a lot from taking cardiac. My elec/sd has blaze mastery, and upon getting tier 3 alpha I went for muscalature since I figured the +recovery would help my end and the +dmg would help my ST attack chain which I've always felt could be a bit higher. It doesn't help as much as you'd think it does, for either aspect. In my experience, the main problem with elec/sd/fire is end comsumption, not end recovery.

    Fire/Fire Build

Gameplay is very nice with that build, I can usually survive alphas with no problem. Of course I always keep a few greens stocked, but it really isn't so bad not having a heal. For example: the other day before the servers went down we were just about to start the last mish of LGTF. I came back later that night still on the TF, went through the last mish hoping someone would come on. When it came to the 2 AVs at the end and no one else had come back, I pulled Hro'Dtohz away from the others and fought him one on one. He hit me once towards the end of the fight, so I used one green and that was it for that fight (turns out I wouldn't have even had to use the one). Of course the Honoree proved far too difficult, but I was still proud of the previous victory.

I probably could have taken Fire Breath but I hate having to line people up for cones and would just rather run in the middle and rip things apart. Enemies die quick enough already the way things are. Like I said before though, part of the fun of this game is being able to play your character the way you like to.

Oh yeah and I should have mentioned that, Twice. It did take quite a bit of time to switch over to villains and do the patron arc. Finally made my way rogue, so you can once again see Dreamwave in Paragon City
  3. Haven't looked at the build yet but just from reading your post I can tell you that you won't need the mez protection from psi if you already have permadom. That will give you all the mez protection you need. Have tried soul drain on a dom before and it was quite awesome. Only reason I don't still have it is because I went for a defense toggle instead. Also agree with Strato, and I don't think you need any end mod slotted in DP at all. I've always just had heal slotted in mine because you don't need to hit many targets to boost your recovery to sustainable levels.

    Fire/Fire Build

Just got my Fire/Fire to 50 this weekend, and have really enjoyed it so far. I took a much different approach in my build though. I worked on typed defenses, capping out s/l/e and leaving a decent amount of the rest. I also took all of the AoEs except for the nuke (I hate powers that leave me gimped afterwards), an AoE immob to keep the crowds together, and took acrobatics as well as trying to work in some extra mez resistance. Only running with the 1st tier cardiac and end use isn't that bad. Here's a look at my build:

Not saying you need to change yours or anything because the point of the game is to make your player the way you want to, just hoping this gives you some ideas or shows you something you may have overlooked.

    AoE Monster!

Thanks everyone for all of your suggestions. I've actually tried a few of the builds named here. Let's go down the list and I'll give some reasoning for why I hadn't considered them:

Spine/Fire - I have one of these at 50 (was one of my first 50s even) and while I really did enjoy the damage, the damage is somewhat accumulative with all the DoT, but what eventually turned me away was the frequency at which mobs would start running away.

Peacebringer/Warshade - I have a PB at 50, still haven't speced it out for i19 yet but I never got the feeling it would be able to match the AoE of my Elec/SD. Warshade on the other hand seems a lot more viable. I might have to start working on that (aside from it being the only hero AT I don't have at 50).

Fire/Fire Dom - I have heard great things about this build before. I've had a Fire/Psi that I've spent a great deal of time playing but when I play it now the damage just doesn't seem to stack up as much as I would like it to.

Blasters (in general) - This one I'm rather curious about. All of the blaster builds suggested seem like rather viable combos, although the one concern I have is do they kill the groups fast enough that you don't have to worry about them running away? Otherwise, how well does the Mace AoE immob work to counter that?

SS/Fire - Ahh this build. I actually have one of these at 50 already (and love it btw). Haven't updated the build yet for i19, and previous to that I was always too worried to pick an epic with another AoE because of the end usage. Anyone with this build care to share their experiences with the new Cardiac slots? Above all, I feel like this one has the most potential to top the AoE of my Elec/SD, but before I pour more millions into it I'd like to hear more about how well it performs.

Not trying to sound too picky here (sorry if it comes across that way) which is why I didn't state any playing preference from the beginning, because I didn't want to limit suggestions to any particular AT. Thanks again everyone for the suggestions and anyone who would like to elaborate on any of the builds mentioned your input is much appreciated.

    AoE Monster!

As the title implies, I'm looking for an absolute beast of an AoE toon. Most of the time I am playing my Elec/Shield/Blaze scrapper, which as most of you know can take out a crowd very quickly. My question for everyone is: what (if anything) would be able to kill a group even faster? This toon has been spoiling me for far too long to the point where any other character I make doesn't seem to interest me as much because they just can't kill things as fast. Now I've become an AoE addict and for a toon to actually hold my interest it would have to be able to put out some better numbers than the ones I already have. I'd really like to make a new toon, so hopefully someone will be able to point me in the right direction.
  7. I know that slotting for defense is certainly not the most popular option for /fire builds, but I've found it to be quite useful on mine. Most people that farm with these builds seem to stick to farms where the enemies only have fire damage, which is totally understandable but I tend to get bored fighting the same enemies over and over again. I've got about 40% s/l def on my SS/fire and it is pretty survivable in most cases. Did the Eden trial last night and when our tank died I had no problem taking his place, so I guess it's really a matter of preference which route you pick.

    DB/DA build help

Thank you so much for your feedback. While the changes are subtle, they definitely make a difference for the better. As for the power choices, I was considering dropping OG for Soul Transfer anyways because I'm sure the stun would have gotten annoying. I got this toon up to lvl 44 today so this comes at a very good time since I will be taking it to 50 very soon. I already have most of the Eradications and Kinetic Combats so other than the LoTGs it won't cost that much more. Thanks again, I will definitely be using the build you gave me!

    DB/DA build help

So I've been working on a dual blades/dark armor brute, and while I realize that neither are extremely popular power sets (part of the reason why I like it, aside from the fact that it looks so cool), I've been having quite a bit of fun with it. I put together a decent build, but it could definitely use some improvement. I managed to get s/l def up to 38% and e/n to 34%, but I feel like I could do better than that. If anyone could take a look at my build and let me know if there's anything I could do to make this better I would very much appreciate it. Here's what I've got so far (btw, it is pre-i19 because I already know what to do with the other 3 powers and the slots are irrelevant at this point):

  10. You could still post the build that you came up with so that you can get some feedback. It's like magik said, they are that rare, so chances are nobody had a build sitting around to provide one for you. You shouldn't be afraid of people tearing it down either, because afterward you're either going to a) find a lot of flaws that you hadn't noticed b) find out you're on the right track or just need subtle changes, or c) disagree with what everyone says and go with the build you wanted in the first place. Either way you should come out of it with more knowledge than you previously had.
  11. So I was playing around with Mids trying to come up with a blaster to make, and I came back to this build that I had once considered making. What I came up with appears to be an absolute beast in terms of AoE, with soft-capped s/l defense to top it off. The only problem is that it looks to be killer on end use. I would very much like to keep my defense numbers up since this is a very blappish build, but any suggestions on how to improve endurance or anything else would be much appreciated.

Thank you very much for posting that build, that gives me a really good idea of what to go for. I think I know how I'm going to do this now, thanks again everyone for your input.

Oh that's right, you can't prevent the nuke crash. I think I was confusing it with the Force of Nature crash (haven't played my other blaster in a long time), which IIRC doesn't drain ALL of your endurance, but since it stunts your recovery, your toggles would otherwise run it dry in no time without Drain Psyche.

I think I'll just post a build that people can tear apart at their will. That might give me a better idea of what route to take. I've slotted for moderate defense and recharge, but I'm wondering if I have enough of either for it to be viable. I took my nuke but didn't slot it. I also took acrobatics instead of slotting KB protection IOs since the hold protection might help a bit. I'm pretty knowledgeable with Mids, but not so much with blasters so I could really use a few pointers on this one.

(BTW, I'm still undecided on an epic set seeing as how that will change soon anyways, so I'm not too worried about that right now)

    Rad/MM tips

So I've been rolling a rad/mm for a while now, up to lvl 31 and I'm really enjoying it so far. I'm definitely more used to melee toons, and am trying to go for a blapper-like build since I have several close range powers. I guess what I'm really wondering is what kind of set bonuses I would benefit most from. Should I be trying to work more towards defense, or go the route of recharge to keep Drain Psyche up as much as possible?

Another thing I've always wondered is how people feel about nukes. I know that with Drain Psyche up it is possible to prevent the end crash, but I feel it's an awful lot of slots for a power that isn't up too often, considering I can easily get my 3 main AoEs under 8 secs for recharge. What I'm really going for is melee ranged AoE onslaught, so any insights on what powers to choose and slotting methods would be greatly appreciated.
  15. While I do appreciate you posting the most relevant response in a while (no offense folks, but we did get a little sidetracked there lol), I think that's already been addressed for the most part. Soloing at -1 x8 is indeed the fastest way of getting purples, but I prefer to do it at +0 x8 because all the other recipes that you get between purple drops sell for considerably more at lvl 50 than at lvl 49. If you're playing a survivable toon with good AoE, it won't take that much longer to kill a full spawn (if you consider an attack like Shield Charge will still take out all the minions if you go up that extra lvl in difficulty). But you're right though, even at that setting you're still going to make a lot more than you would taking down AVs.

I used to always do it without bosses, but recently I've been throwing those in as well. This might not be as effective in terms of money/time, but once in a while you strike gold as I got a LoTG +rech from a Greater Devoured the other day. Plus it makes it a little more challenging which is nice because sometimes I'll be soloing without bosses for a while and it's so easy that I start to forget I'm not actually that tough, it's just that easy. It only takes one tough mission to put me back in my place afterward.

I'm still considering making a build for AVs/GMs though. I might roll a few different toons and see which one I like the best. I'm definitely leaning towards the /rad set for the debuffs. Maybe an ill/rad or fire/rad troller, or for villains a fire/rad or sonic/rad corruptor. Any insights about these builds would certainly be welcome.
  16. @FireWyvern - You're right, those were definitely not the easiest AVs I could have picked. Although, they were the only ones I had missions for at the time, so I figured I would try them out anyways. I knew there was no way I could beat Arch-A, but I figured if I could at least put a good dent in an AV that was resistant to most of my damage then I could probably take down some of the others. I generally stick to melee toons as well, many of my 50s consisting of brutes and scrappers. It's fun to get them IO'ed out to the point where they can tank. Some might say "why not just play a tank?" but there's really nothing impressive about being able to tank if you're playing a tank lol.

@Frosticus - I've often felt that same way. If we're all supposedly so "super-powered" then why is it that we struggle so much against signature heroes/villains? It certainly makes you feel a lot less super when these people are able to crush you in one or two hits. BTW, I've seen some of your screenshots before and those are definitely some impressive feats. I can't remember which ones in particular, but I'm pretty sure I saw them. I know I saw some of Silverado's too.
  17. I want to thank everyone for their helpful responses. I wasn't expecting to get so many so soon. Upon FireWyvern's suggestion, I went ahead a tried a couple AVs with my newest lvl 50, a Fire/Shield Brute that I just finished slotting yesterday. Of course the first one I tried was a lost cause to begin with. I went up against Arch-A, knowing that once I got it down far enough to heal itself it would just turn into a stalemate from there since the heal would recharge by the time I got it down again. I tried simply to see if I could even get it down to that point, which I was able to do a few times. Next I tried it out on Ms. Liberty. I was doing a pretty decent job of getting her down until another group came running over (a full spawn set for x8 players with bosses) which quickly brought that fight to an end.

While neither of these ventures were met with success, it did leave me confident that it would be possible to solo an AV with this toon. Although I must admit that I did pop a few insps here and there, so with that in mind it seems a little less impressive. GMs on the other hand are an entirely different story. I'm still considering making a toon capable of taking them down because, like many have stated, if you can do it solo then you will certainly bring a lot of usefulness to any team. I was thinking of rolling either a fire/rad or sonic/rad corruptor. From what I've read, sonic/rad is generally safer, but fire/rad tends to be more useful for teaming. I know traps is also very handy, but it seems to be a very acquired taste in terms of play-style.
  18. So I've been considering making a toon capable of doing this for a while now. The only thing that's keeping me from doing it is that I'm not sure if it will be worth all the time and money it will take to get that character to 50, slotted with IOs. What I mean by that is, are the rewards for accomplishing such feats worth all the time it would take? For example, is there any money to be made from defeating the giant DE monsters? I guess I'm most curious about what kinds of drops you could get (if any), aside from those special inspirations, and in the case of AVs, are the drops considerably better?

If I'm going to take the time to make a toon for this, I guess I want it to be worth the time it takes. I don't want to make it if the only thing I would get out of it is being able to brag about who/what I killed solo. I have characters that can farm very well so I'm thinking I might just be better off playing them if all I'm looking to do is make money, but I know many people here have done this a lot so I was hoping to get some feedback from them on how this works for them.
  19. I was playing around with different combos in AD earlier and noticed something worth mentioning. If you have enough global recharge (mine is at about 50% without hasten on), instead of using 2 Membrane Exposures you could just put one, and then put an Enzyme Exposure in the other slot. This brings the recharge up to 109.9 instead of 92.9 (on mine, yours might be different), but it reduces the end cost from 10.4 to 7.8, and increases the DDR from 24.2% to 26.5%. If endurance is indeed a problem, then this would definitely help since it won't be firing off as frequently and will cost less endurance each time. Of course, you need enough global recharge to pull it off but shields leave you plenty of room for LoTG +Rech IOs. Just a thought, although I guess for a lot of people it's really a matter of preference.
  20. Telperion, thank you for your comments as well as sharing your modified build. I didn't realize this before, but looking at the numbers now I can see that adding those Membrane Exposures to Active Defense increases the defense debuff resistance. I didn't pay nearly as much attention to the slot levels as you did either. Yours will definitely be better for leveling and exemping down, I was just concerned about the end result. I made a couple tweaks to my build after seeing yours, nothing earth-shattering though so I won't take the time to post it unless anyone really wants it. The only real difference in our builds is that yours is a little better on recharge (122.5 - 118.8%) while mine is a little better on regen (272 - 242%).

In any case, these are looking to be some nasty brutes. Thanks everyone for the input on this thread. I just got my brute to 47 today, so let the slotting begin
  21. As I'm getting this toon closer to lvl 50, I've been giving this build some more thought. Considering that this is a very defense-reliant build, I was thinking that I would benefit more from the Soul Mastery pool instead of going Mu Mastery as I had previously planned, since defense's only weakness is your foe's accuracy. I've made a few changes so I'm posting what I've come up with. If anyone sees anything that could be improved then please let me know, and if not then at least I've posted a decent build for others to use as well.

  22. Drexyl

    SS/Elec Critique

Yeah after reading the other comments I can see how Electric Fences can be a little useless as part of your attack chain. I mostly just included it in that build as a mule for set bonuses but like others have said, when you use it you lose a lot of the mitigation that Foot Stomp has to offer. I haven't actually tried the Soul Mastery powers on a brute yet but I can definitely see how it increases survivability.
  23. Drexyl

    SS/Elec Critique

One thing I would recommend about the Mu Mastery pool is taking Electric Fences and Ball Lightning instead of Mu Lightning and Static Discharge because you're not at a loss for ST damage and an AoE would be more useful than a cone attack. Another thing I noticed is that, while you have slotted for several defense bonuses, none of them are really stacked high enough to have a large impact on survivability. Also, it may just be a personal preference of mine, but the leaping pool usually seems more useful for melee toons.

Here's a build I worked out that offers more than twice the melee defense of that one, as well as more ranged and AoE. The end drain is lower, the recovery and regeneration are higher, the only thing that suffers a little is the recharge. Not sure what your budget is though, because some of these can be a little expensive, although I stayed away from purples and pvp sets. I'm sure there's a better build out there, but here's something to consider for now.

  24. That's actually the route I was thinking about going with it. I don't know how I missed this before, but looking at your sig now I realize that I was using one of your fire/shield scrapper builds as a guideline for this. Thanks again for the input, I think I know exactly how I want to do this now.
  25. Wow I totally overlooked that one. That was a much simpler fix than I had expected, thanks Fury. I was also wondering if anyone had any thoughts about the powers I picked. I'm still not sure if Fire Sword is the way to go, as I've seen many people take Cremate instead. Cremate has a higher DPS, but also a higher end cost and recharge so I'm a little torn between the two (plus I like Fire Sword's animation better, but the numbers are more important). Taunt is another one I'm not so sure about. I guess it could come in handy at times but I don't really know if it's necessary. Any thoughts?
