I realize that much, that was more in the line of "why is this better on this AT?" than, "I can use this for something." I had no idea Controllers got stronger secondary effect debuffs, though I guess it makes sense if that's handled by the same modifier that governs controls.
  2. Hello Scrapper Forum,
I've had a FM/SD Scrapper parked in her 30s for a pretty long time and I'm considering finishing her off as my next alt project.

I'm not a huge scrapper player, this is only my second one to make it past 20 since launch, so I'm hoping to run my current build past some much more experienced eyes for review.

My goal was to vector cap with as near to perma-hasten as possible, using no purple attack sets, and be able to maintain my endurance, possibly by using Ageless.

I've never tried to put together a high-performance Scrapper attack chain before, so I'm not totally certain I got it right, but I think this build will be able to sustain GFS->FS->Incinerate->Cremate->repeat for a good while and do respectable damage. Is that going to give me decent performance? Am I even correct? XD

So, thank you in advance, mighty Pylon Soloers, and without further ado, here is my attempt:

  3. So I've been thinking about making some sort of heavy debuffing, heavy damage dealing (probably as a result of the former) support Archetype character, possibly with the goal in mind of being able to solo AVs or maybe GMs (haven't decided how ambitious I am on that front yet) but with a definite goal of turning any team into a steamrolling slaughterfest of funsies.

One of the ideas I was thus kicking around was Cold Dom/Ice Blast, as it takes advantage of the Defenders' superior debuffs, but also has Blaster damage on it's Ice Storm and Blizzard (an example of my topic for this post).

This had me looking at Cold Domination's numbers on the ATs that can use it... when I noticed something that seems very strange to me. The Benumb power on a Defender's Detailed Info shows:
    -62.5% Damage
    -500% Regeneration
    -50% Secondary Effects
    -5% Endurance

On a Corruptor it predictably shows:
    -50% Damage
    -500% Regeneration
    -37.5% Secondary Effects
    -5% Endurance

But on a Controller, we have:
    -50% Damage
    -500% Regeneration
    -62.5% Secondary Effects
    -5% Endurance
    ...what?

Is this an anomaly in the power itself or in the Detailed Info pane? For reference all of these numbers were taken from the character creator.

Another example of this kind of thing is the much talked about Double Scourge on Corruptors' Rain of Fire, making the power inordinately strong on a Corruptor relative to the other ATs that get it (I'm also considering Fire/Dark for this very reason, as well as the fact that Dark's Tar Patch is Defender-level powerful on a Corruptor).

Is there any sort of collected list of powers that are unexpectedly strong (or weak) on a given Archetype? I realize some of these are because of the issue/feature/whatever of psueopet powers not automatically adjusting based on AT scales, but apparently there are more, such as Benumb, that are unrelatedly inflated or weakened.

Also, does anyone have any input on potential AT/power combos for my above mentioned goal? I'm open to any of the Support ATs except Masterminds (because I am already up to my eyeballs in Masterminds).
I would also prefer to avoid Radiation Emission unless it's on a Controller, because my understanding is that it plays (can play?) a lot differently on a Controller. I would also like to avoid Ice Control and probably Storm Summoning.
  4. My Bots/Force can solo GoS (and Deathsurge, never bothered to try any other GMs, the two I've done were spontaneous: ohh look! ...I wonder if I can... moments).
He wasn't built specifically to take hard targets solo, but he was built to be nigh unkillable and have good pet damage output, so, same diff, I guess.
Oh, this was also without temps, but with T4 Musculature Core. It would be a lot easier (read: faster, it took close to 10 minutes for Scrappy, don't recall the time on Deathsurge) with the rest of the Incarnate powers.

Yes it goes beyond the damage cap, but I'm not sure of the actual value of damage dealt or if it's based on the attack being used

Fire Assault's was changed to "Embrace of Fire" which works exactly like the old Fiery Embrace used to (damage bonus to everything but more and longer for Fire)

The Confuse set is the only one I know of offhand that breaks that pattern... by having a (delightful) +5% Ranged/2.5% Energy&Negative Energy 6 piece bonus.
  7. As someone else mentioned, you could theoretically use that build (approximately), but you really don't want to. If you need detailed build help, the Archetype specific forums are usually very helpful if you can give them some speciifc goals and questions to work with.

Has anyone ever compiled a list of most or all of the powers that don't have all of their possible associated types flagged? I've heard the Fire Ball example before and I've also heard that there are some psi attacks that aren't flagged with a position at all. I'd love to know exactly how many such occurrences there are of this.
  10. I see this concern a lot - and I understand it based on the raiding paradigm in other games, but really, don't be afraid to run iTrials. Counting formation time, I rarely see a Lambda or BAF take more than 30 minutes or Keyes an hour, on either server I play on. They're not very difficult either, just follow your group the first couple times and you'll do fine.
  11. I also really hate the new login screen.

I did think the old COH/COV screens needed to be updated, but what I'd have liked to see would be the Freedom Phalanx and the Arachnos leaders in art the quality of the Going Rogue splash, not STATESMAN AGAIN LOLOLOL OH BTW CLOCKWURK.

    Older Powers

To the people nitpicking about my example of Clarion Destiny being available to every character because it's a level 50 power, fine.

Other Support sets that offer mez protection or resistance:
    Empathy/Clear Mind (protection)
    Kinetics/Increase Density (protection)
    Pain Domination/Enforced Morale (protection)
    Poison/Antidote (protection)
    Radiation Emission/Accelerate Metabolism (resistance)
    Sonic Resonance/Sonic Dispersion (protection)
    Thermal Radiation/Thaw (protection)
    Traps/Force Field Generator (protection)

Not a single one of those sets is as limited in it's breadth of ability as Force Fields.
Sonic isn't in a great place, and neither is Pain, but neither is in a worse place than Force Fields either.
Poison wasn't great but has been significantly improved in I21 and is now average.
Radiation, Thermal, Traps, and Kinetics are all amazing sets that do multiple things for a team and do them all very well.
And of course Empathy isn't what it used to be but still boasts some of the best buffs in the game as well as the best healing throughput.

Half of the ATs in the game don't NEED mez protection, and most of the other support sets can ALSO provide it. That's more than reason enough to suggest that Force Fields needs more than +defense and one of the worst mez protection abilities to become competitive with the other Support options.

The fact that every character in the game that could actually make use of that mez protection can now get it on their own at 50 is just salt in the wounds.

From a standpoint only concerned with the relative power of the available sets, the only reason to make a Force Field character in the game right now is that Masterminds don't have access to Cold Domination.

    Edit: A more targetted reply

You seem to be forgetting that there is an entire freaking game between you and the ability to have Clarion Destiny.

Also, as noted, new players and returning players will not have access to IOs right away unless they choose to buy access. How exactly do you get significant defense on a Blaster, Defender, or Controller, while not using any IOs whatsoever? (Answer: you team with someone who can provide it)

Saying an entire powerset is useless because we have Incarnate powers (which we can't get until we are level 50), and because we have IOs (which not everyone uses, and free players won't be able to use at all) is pretty foolish.

Maybe Force Field is useless to you and your crew of IOed out Incarnates, but it is still plenty useful to the people who don't have or don't want those things.

I got a couple people interested in the game while they had the $1.99 sale going. They are going to be Premium players who will not be buying access to IOs for quite a while, if ever. I rolled a FF/Sonic Defender to run with them because defense is the most useful thing I can provide them that they can't do for themselves.
Did you even read my post, Claws? Or look at my signature for that matter? My main is a /Force Field Mastermind.

Nowhere did I ever say that Force Fields is useless. I said there are a lot of ways to stack defense on a team. I never mentioned IOs either, but that does contribute to the issue, yes.
Force Fields only provides Defense to a team. When your team is at the cap, which is not hard to do considering how many of the support sets have defense buffs, large and small, how many people take maneuvers and personal defense pool powers, VEAT support abilites, and, sure, IOs, the Force Fielder has nothing left to contribute.
That's a frustrating game to play.
It's made more frustrating because, to use your own example against you, you would have done your friends a lot better by making a Cold/Sonic to support them than Force Fields. Cold provides 20% defense to everything unenhanced versus Force Fields' 25% on a Defender, but also brings a group stealth, 45% cold resistance, 30% fire resistance, 20% energy resistance, 60% slow resistance, some of the best debuffs in the game, and the Heat Loss and Frostwork buffs.
Force Fields counters all that with... a single target mag 3 intangible on a minute cooldown... PFF, an awful AoE attack, a really really awful single target positioning tool that I can't even justify calling an attack, a Repel aura, and Force Bubble.

A good day for Crimson sees him use PFF maybe once... Detention Shield zero times, speaking of which I should really respec out of it, Force Bubble once if I run a BAF trial, and Force Bolt maybe five times if I'm not doing trials.
I don't even have Repulsion Bomb or Field, neither is remotely useful at all.

So show me exactly how Force Fields pars up with it's counterpart sets.

Edit2: By the way, reading over that, I realize my post may sound a bit harsh. If so, it's because there is a LOT of undeserved attitude and snark in what I'm replying to.

No, what most people asking for FF revamps want is a support set that can do more than one thing. Raw defense is great... if your targets are below the soft cap, but there are many, many ways to boost defenses on a team, and most of them come from sets that can do way more than Force Fields, such as Cold Domination, which basically invalidates the entire existence of Force Fields. The only other mechanic of any use in FF is the small mez protection on Dispersion, and now everyone can provide better mez protection by going Clarion Destiny.
  14. Definitely looking forward to Elec/Time. I would make a Fire/Time but I already have a Fire/Earth Dominator and I try not to repeat sets without a great reason.

Aren't you really limiting the focus of the discussion too much with that? Sure, in a perfect world, the two Kheldian types would be balanced on a razor's edge with eachother... but way before we get there they need to be closer to the ballpark of the rest of the ATs.
  16. It's a necessary evil to make content that can't just be rofloled over with buffs and IOs. The devs pretty clearly want us to employ classic WoW-style boss battle gimmick tactics in the trials and if there were no untyped damage we just wouldn't have to, plain and simple.
  17. I'm going to say Illusion/Kin Controller or Kinetic Melee/(anything but Dark) Scrapper.
  18. Just some food for thought: If you want a gaming laptop, and when I say that, I mean, a really good one that will give you the same kind of performance you'd expect out of a desktop rig, running Ultra Mode on high settings, etc., expect to pay a lot more than you would for a desktop that will give you equivalent performance. That said, you can get a laptop that will give you decent performance on low-end Ultra Mode without going into the multi-thousands.
I, personally, am a big believer in desktops over laptops if you're looking for performance and lacking in cash, however. The premium for portability is just too high for my taste. As an example, I purchased a laptop in July of last year for ~$1,400 and built a desktop in November for ~$1,000. The desktop has four times the RAM, double the hard disk space, two more processor cores that are each more than twice the GHz, and two nVidia graphics cards, both of a higher generation than the laptop's single integrated core Radeon.
The difference in price/performance is somewhat exacerbated by the fact that I ordered the parts and built the desktop myself, which is going to be part of somebody's profit margin if you buy a built rig, but that notwithstanding the difference is pretty massive.

Edit: Reading through the thread I'm also going to suggest that, yes, if you go with a new desktop rig, an old monitor is going to be an issue. The best computer in the world plugged into an ancient monitor that only takes VGA input and puts out a native resolution of 1280x720 (just venturing a guess based on what you've said about the monitor you have packed away) is still going to give you a picture quality you'd expect from an equally dated rig.
  19. My Ice/Storm skipped Snow Storm and Flash Freeze for her final build. I just couldn't make room for them, and the combo has plenty of slow already. Also, Flash Freeze is high on my personal list of contenders for The Worst Power in the Entire Game. I wouldn't even take it for a mule unless you have a power pick and four slots (to slot 5p Fortunata's Hypnosis) you really can't figure out how to use better.

Arctic Air I would also advise you to reconsider, it's a very very strong power, perhaps the best in Ice Control, when slotted up.

Quite fond of my Fire/shield scrapper personally. Excellent at bringin' the pain.
  21. I actually probably also get the worst "scrapperlock" on my mastermind - Bots/Force. That character is nigh invulnerable and can put out pretty impressive AoE damage., so sometimes I get lost in my own little glorious world of massive infernos fraught with laser fire.
  22. Something to consider: Kin plays really nicely with Scrappers and Blasters due to their high base damage values. Brute base damage is relatively low because Fury accounts for so much of their total damage, which means damage buffs from outside sources are somewhat... diluted in comparison on a Brute.

It's a matter of synergy. The fact that Time has a PBAOE toggle means it plays well with other sets that have a PBAOE toggle, and it's relatively safe with -tohit/+defense in the set as well, making other PBAOE toggles easier to use. Plus, Time is control and +recharge heavy, giving it even more of a boost as a Controller secondary. There's plenty of angles to the argument that it's good for Fire/Ice/Elec Control.

In other news, this appears to be fixed in I21 (as well as all other instances of powers hitting targets that are already dead causing them to fizzle... such as anything that chains... such as Ion Judgment).

I would be delighted for any trading tips from someone more experienced than I (which is, sadly, not very).
