My main is a cyborg Claws/Regen scrapper.
He invented all of the technology that his body is now mostly made up of, but Crey decided they wanted it. So, they blew up his lab in an attempt to kill him and claim his work as their own.
His research was in both cybernetic limb replacement and nanotechnology for use in medicinal purposes.
Crey did not acquire the cybernetic limb research, as the only working prototypes are now grafted to my main character's body and he destroyed his notes. But they DID acquire the nanotechnology side of it, it is now part of regeneration-based Paragon Protectors.
Unfortunately, the nanomachines are flawed. They can only repair anything to the exact state it existed in before they were introduced. So, if you have a scar, any time they repair that area, they rebuild the scar exactly as it was before. That means they can't regrow my scrapper's missing limbs, but they CAN repair his cybernetic ones, because they don't differentiate between organic and non-organic material. -
Here's a thought. You want to engage in PvE play in a PvP zone, right?
Now, everyone knows that PvP stands for player versus player.
Does anyone remember what PvE stands for?
I'll help you out here. PvE stands for Player versus Environment.
In a PvP zone, other players attacking you is PART of the environment. -
Essentially what this would do is introduce a game mechaic in which who you are allowed to team with is determined by which badges you have.
Currently, someone saying "You can't join my team because you don't have badge X" is just being an elitist jerk.
If the idea of different versions of zones based on completing things were to happen, it would make "You can't join my team because you don't have badge X" a LITERAL reality. Not only can you not join that persons team.....you can't even SEE that person's team. Forced elitism would NOT be a good thing for CoH.
Imagine a brand new player's experience upon logging in for the first time. Now, obviously, this player hasn't done anything at all yet. Think people complain that the game is empty NOW? Wait until everyone is in different versions of zones than each other.
The reason that works in WoW is exactly the reason it WON'T work here. In WoW it is expected that you are going to complete an area of the game within a certain level range, and never return to that area of the game. In CoH the game world is much smaller, and characters across all level ranges share the same area of land. -
Quote:So, in other words, someone who has NOT completed the LGTF can never team in RWZ with someone who HAS? Since they're in different versions of the zone, it stands to reason that they wouldn't be permitted to team together. You clearly missed the part that said "Once I've completed all the quest chains for that area, the keep is now a safe haven and a staging point to launching the attack to the next area. However someone who has just come into the area and not completed any of the quests still sees it as a warzone."
So while yes, I have completed the RWZ storyline and thus the RWZ looks different to ME, it's a personal thing, only those that have completed the LGTF will see that version, however for everyone else the warzone is still it's normal old self, once THEY complete the LGTF then it changes for them as well.
It's not a one time only thing, that once it's done, nobody can ever do it again, instead the warzone is 'phased' there are two phases 'warzone version' and 'LGTF completed version' people who haven't done the LGTF see the warzone version while those that have see the LGTF complete version.
Now spread that idea across the rest of the game. All the Task Forces have an effect on the zones you enter.
To use my example before:
I have completed the Synapse Task Force. The effect of completing this TF is that Clockwork will never spawn in open zones anymore. You have defeated the thing that allows them to function, so they just don't work anymore. Don't have the Knight Errant badge? Too bad. Paladins don't get built anymore because Clockwork no longer function.
Since Clocks no longer spawn in open zones for me, I now enter different versions of Atlas Park, Galaxy City, Kings Row, Steel Canyon, Skyway City, Perez Park, Boomtown, and Faultline than someone who hasn't done the Synapse TF. Now no one who hasn't completed that TF can team with me in any of those zones.
Also, since Clocks no longer spawn in open zones, I just made the Numina TF impossible for me to complete. Because you have to kill clockwork in the streets of Steel Canyon in order to finish the TF. If I didn't get the Clockstopper, Knight Errant, and Gearsmasher badges prior to running Synapse, I can never get them, because I will never again encounter the enemies I need to defeat to earn those badges.
If I didn't get Gearsmasher and can't complete Numina, that's 2 accolades that I can never earn.
Another problem: The servers would start crashing a LOT more.
Why, you ask? Because now the server has to check every single character's badge count every single time that character zones to determine which version of that zone they enter. Since people are constantly zoning somewhere on the server at all times of day, it's going to put a LOT more strain on the system.
See how something like this could become a problem? -
Quote:But what about the people who haven't completed the LGTF yet? Are they not allowed to do it because the purpose of the TF no longer exists?Well the tech is there...
...admittedly it's in another MMO...
WoW uses phasing tech.
For example say I haven't completed the intro quests for a zone, I see the keep under seige, the undead and human soldiers battling it out, frost drakes circling overhead to occasionally swoop down and bombard the battlements. Now as the quests progress, let's say I do the quest chain which clears out the undead ground forces and bolsters the alliance soldiers numbers. The area than phases into a different state where the ground forces are gone and there's now an increased number of alliance patrols.
Once I've completed all the quest chains for that area, the keep is now a safe haven and a staging point to launching the attack to the next area. However someone who has just come into the area and not completed any of the quests still sees it as a warzone.
Lets take this into CoH. Now lets say you complete the Lady Grey TF which is the culmination of the entire RWZ storyarc, now instead of Vanguard being besieged, they're outposts are clear and the Rikti are all but fought back to the valley with the crashed mothership. Vanguard troops are clearing out the rest of the troublemakers in the warzone (Arachnos, Council and Malta/KoA) instead of just fighting Rikti.
So, ONE team gets to run the TF in RWZ like it is now, but everyone else after that has to go through Ouroboros to do it? How is that fair? It would eliminate the cooperative nature of that TF because Hero and VIllain Ouroboros zones are seperate.
Also, once the TF gets moved to Ouroboros upon completion by that first team, a new player may never realize it even exists, because the game does nothing to tell you what missions are available in Ouro. -
Quote:Adding new stuff affects the current situation, and may require adjustments to the current powers/enhancements/inherents/whatever to bring things back into balance.
Pretty much this.
Every time you add a new powerset, or IO, or Archetype, or mission, or story arc, or task force, or pretty much anything else that wasn't there before, you have to look at the entire game and see if there's anything that gets thrown out of whack by it.
Look at it like a see-saw. If both sides have equal weight on them it will be balaced. If you add something to one side, the balance will tilt toward that side. So you need to either add something to the other side, or move something from one side to the other.
Hence, every new thing you add has potential to throw off the balance. The only way to really finish balancing the game is to stop adding new things to it. And I think I can speak for the majority in saying that would be an unpopular solution. -
Still haven't gotten an answer to my question.
A PvEer is in RV working on badges.
I am in RV working on badges too....only in my case the badge I'm working on is the 400 rep badge.
The PvEer wants me to leave him alone so he can get his badges. The only way I can get any credit towards MY badge is by killing him.
He is the ONLY person of the opposite faction in any of the PvP zones on my server. And Arena kills don't count towards the rep badge.
So, because he asked to be left alone I'm supposed to accept that he is somehow more deserving of his badge than I am? -
Quote:Not to mention the 4 or 5 freespecs that have dropped since 2007 when he registered.I find it hard to believe that you burn through all three trial respecs and what is likely two vetspecs or more on every one of your characters.
If you do change your mind that often, I highly suggest using one of the build planners. -
Quote:HP capping a blaster is easy. Really easy.Yeah, +Regen and +HP work well together, since your Regen amount is calculated as a fraction of yout total hit points.
Here's the HP for each archetype.
http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Hit_points
You'll still cap out at less than an unmodified Tanker, but could have 60% more HP than my Controller did if you get +33% hit points. (20% from Freedom Phalanx, TF Commander and Portal Jockey accolades, 13% from set bonuses, it probably doable)
I guess the only way to really find out if it works is to try it.
But, since the hard cap on blaster HP is 1606, it doesn't have as huge an impact on regen as capping a scrapper, brute, or tank. Scrappers cap at around 2400, tanks and brutes both cap at around 3100 or so.
With all the agro you're likely to draw, regen alone will NOT keep you alive. It will extend your lifespan, but if you hit a spawn with an AoE and don't kill all or most of them the return alpha will shred you.
Add some defense so that regen has a chance to DO something and you'll be in better shape. Regenerating 100 HP a second does no good at all if you take 3000 damage in 5 seconds, which large spawns in the late game are capable of producing. -
Quote:Bull.Technically you can't solo an AV/GM without player interaction, unless you've been so fantastically lucky that during your solo career you've managed to get the right sets, to create a GM killer build.
I've soloed quite a few AVs, and not even with that stellar of a build. I can point you to the build I did it with if you like, it's posted over in the scrapper section.
There are a few GMs I'm confident I could solo as well if I felt like sitting there for an hour beating on it.
As far as the NEEDING of accolades: There is not a single accolade in the game that you cannot progress through the game without. My brute is sitting at level 50, moderately IOed into an AV soloing capable build. He doesn't have a single villain accolade, not a one.
As far as the game is concerned, a NEED is something that you can't progress any further without. There is almost nothing in this game that actually qualifies as a need.
A WANT, on the other hand, is just something that you would like to do or have. It has ZERO bearing on your ability to progress. -
On the same theme:
8 defenders = Unstoppable killing machine
8 double buffers = You're going to defeat them HOW exactly?
Currently, ANY character is capable of soloing. A double buff powerset AT would be helpless without a team. You have for attack options: Flurry, Jump Kick, Brawl, Boxing, Kick, and after level 41 you get Epic pool powers.
What are you going to do if you get immobilized on the way to a mission and have no attacks whatsoever, scream for help in Broadcast? Chances are anything that immobilizes you is going to stay at range and shoot you to death, Brawl isn't going to do much good there.
Oh noes, the Council goons webnaded me and they're standing 12 feet away with machine guns, what do I do? You die, that's what you do. A defender can at least go down fighting, you can't even do that much. -
AE tickets for rare salvage is a much better return.
You don't have to farm AE, just find some arcs you enjoy playing and they'll build up.
I got a purple drop on my brute this morning before work, first purple he's ever gotten, to the tune of half a billion infamy. So, I guess playing level 50 non-AE stuff is a good way to earn cash too. But not especially reliable. -
Quote:Rather than a zone flag it should be a personal one that's only available in zones that both sides can get into. That way the PvP'ers can fight each other, the PvE'ers can collect their badges and some of us can watch a decent duel between two consenting players without whining from either side of the PvP/PvE divide, or being ganked by the Stalker who's trying out a new build behind your back.
NO.
The reward in the PvP zones (Shivans, Nukes, etc.) is greater to make up for the greater risk of being attacked by another player. A player is much more capable of defeating you than any computer AI will EVER be, therefore the rewards that can be found in those zones are better than most other repeatable rewards.
A Shivan is a temporary pet that comes with 5 uses. It is the same strength no matter how may times you get it, while other temp pets decrease in effectiveness when you get them more than once.
A Warburg nuke is an extremely powerful attack/debuff, that you can acquire as many times as you want.
The risk is equal to the reward. You are asking for a reward scaled to that particular risk, while removing the risk entirely. (That's why things like MM pets in AE are considered exploits, the reward is too great for the risk involved, which is effectively zero)
So, NO. If you want your badges and temp powers, deal with the fact that you can be attacked by other players. I'm not a huge PvP fan, but if I enter a PvP zone, I accept the fact that I can and will be attacked while I'm looking for a badge. -
Quote:Actually, with the changes to how exempng works, I'm okay with teaming up to 5 levels lower than me. I still get to keep any powers I may have, and I still get xp, so I don't lose anything by it.It's not at all a hypocritical stance to take. If I'm level 32 and playing with a team that's running around level 32, a level 17 person or two getting invited to the team doesn't affect me as long as they aren't set as the head honcho. I don't lose anything from merely *playing* with a low level character. However, in being recruited by a much lower level team I do lose something. And since it is those who are recruiting that will be seeing the search comments it makes perfectly non-hypocritical sense to advertise "my level or higher" there.
Basically, recruiting lower level people and sidekicking them up is a far different situation from being recruited by lower level people and losing access to your powers. Such a big difference that I'm somewhat surprised you wouldn't notice it.
I don't mind teaming with those much lower than me either, as long as they don't have the star. My only exception is tanks, if I'm in the 40's and there's a tank on the team I want them to have enough of their powers to be able to do their job (exceptions are made if they are not the only tank). Expecting a level 6 tank to hold the agro of an 8 man spawn of Nemesis and survive it is kind of ridiculous. -
Quote:This. You need to go with what's fun for you, but I must mention gobbling blue skittles is only required on non-IO Dark Armor builds. IO set offer lots of different endurance management options so endurance really isn't an issue.
My Broadsword/Dark Armor was and endurance guzzling hog before IOs. Now he's softcapped and has almost no endurance problems at all. And I did it (relatively) cheap.
Katana/Regen is a solid combo though. Pretty much any scrapper is at least solid, even if they're not ZOMGAWESOME!!!!!1 out of the box. -
Quote:But what happens if there's a teamwipe and you're the ony person left standing? You're completely helpless to do anything to defend yourself. And if there's a spawn standing over your teammates, rezzing them will do no good because they will die again before they can do anything.Because its interesting and different. Variety, people, is the spice of life. My original draw to this game was how different all the ATs were, back when controllers had massive control and no real damage to speak of pre-32 (before containment). It gave a whole different feel to the game than playing a blaster or defender. I want to see more of that, more variety. I want to see more innovation.
Dual blades with the combo thing was a good idea. Dual pistols with selectable damage type and secondary effect is a good idea though it doesn't go far enough. I'm hoping for new unique ATs and I'm hoping that all powersets from here on out put something new and unique into the game - not just reskins of powers we already have. That gets boring.
A character with nothing but buffs is, quite simply, dead weight. I would not invite one to any team I was running because I don't like teammates that aren't self-sufficient in a pinch. Sure, that Empathy defender isn't putting out a whole lot of damage, but when the feces hits the fan it can at least do SOMETHING to defend itself. A Buff/Buff character would be completely reliant on it's teammates to stay alive.
I don't like inviting Empaths that only have 1 completely unslotted attack either. Everyone is at full health and all your buffs are applied, shoot something while you wait to be needed again. -
Quote:You know this for a fact?
There are 165k users registered to the boards. This does not mean there are 165k players currently holding subscriptions.
There are not 165k active subscribers to CoH.
-Rachel-
How many people play the game that never registered to the forums at all? I personally know at least 10. I'm pretty sure that most of the people who post on the forums know at least a couple people that aren't registered. Because you don't HAVE to register to the forums in order to play the game, you know. I know a guy that played for 2 years before he even knew the forums existed. The number of people registered to the forums does not necessarily reflect the number of people playing the game.
So, there are 165k registered forum users, and that means that the population has NEVER been higher than that?
I say there is no way you could possibly know that unless you have access to NCSoft's database....which I would be willing to bet you do not.
Quarterly reports aren't even that reliable. They show how much money the game has made over the quarter. People that paid their subscription up for a year 6 months ago aren't contributing to that number, they contributed to the report 2 quarters before.
And for the record: It is the 11 million people (or so they claim) that play WoW that I was calling sheep. CoH players are the ones (generally speaking) that play what they want to play, whether that's the "in" thing or not.
I know a number of people that play WoW just because their friends play, and they want to hang out with them. The game they're playing doesn't even matter to them, because they're not there for the game, they're there to socialize. -
Quote:This. For the same reason that Freedom and Virtue are always the most populated servers... because people are followers.
People in general, are sheep. Mindless drones who will do what other people are doing for no better reason than the fact that other people are doing it.
No one wants to try something new, unless there are a lot of people doing it already. People always assume that millions of people cannot possibly be wrong. History has proven that to be false repeatedly, yet it is still assumed to be true. Galileo was mocked for saying the Earth was round, because everyone else believed it to be flat. Once it was PROVEN to be round, everyone accepted it like they'd always known. The fact that 5 years earlier they believed the exact opposite was never even considered.
Now people assume that an MMO is a failure if it doesn't get as big as WoW is. Which is ridiculous because WoW is not the norm for an MMO, it is an anomaly. CoH has around 160,000 players between all the servers (just look at the numbers at the bottom of the forum), and it's considered to somehow not be successful just because it doesn't have millions playing it.
Superheros have always been, and probably will always be, a niche market. When most people think of an MMO, they think "Dungeons and Dragons on a computer", whether that is the case or not. The same as calling all facial tissue Kleenex, or all adhesive bandages Band-Aids. The name of a brand that becomes well known becomes the name of the product. I wouldn't be surprised to see all MMOs called WoW eventually, because of that same trend. It's already starting, when I tell someone I play a computer game online, they assume I'm talking about WoW because it's the only one they realize even exists. -
Quote:I'm assuming by your logic you can't possibly grief in a pvp zone, right?
The guy was there for badges, smeg wanted to pvp despite the other players desire not to engage in PvP so he attacked him.
I'm not saying smeg was in the wrong. I'm just saying that smeg caused undesired grief to that player. Griefing.
What if Smeg was working on the 400 rep badge?
That would mean HE was there for badges too. Who's badge takes precedence? -
If I'm in a PvP zone and see you with an orange name above your head you are a target, plain and simple.
If you do not WANT to be a target, the solution is very very easy: Do not put yourself in the position of having an orange name from my perspective.
"But...but...I just want my baaaadge!"
Yeah? Me too. I don't have my 400 rep badge yet, and I'm working on it. Unfortunately for you, killing other players is how I get that badge.
You don't get the 400 rep badge without killing people...and I prefer to earn my badges instead of farming them. If I kill you....you have 10 minutes during which I won't attack you, if we're both still in the zone.
I'm fairly honorable about it. I don't attack while you're fighting NPCs, and I usually will let you know I'm there first (unless I'm playing my stalker, a stalker that gives himself away is a dead stalker 9 times out of 10).
It's the same as a lot of other people said, PvP zones are intended for PvP. Going into one and saying "I don't want to PvP" is like going to a strip club and saying "I don't want there to be naked women around while I'm in here" -
I have a couple appropriate ones for two of my characters.
My fire/fire blaster's says: Psychotic Fire/Fire blaster, I spam attacks nonstop, you have been warned.
That character had all but the last debt badge by level 35, I play him like a nutjob because it's fun.
My BS/DA scrapper's says: Always willing to team, but send a tell first, if you are rude, I will be rude right back.
Strangely, he gets a lot of rude tells out of nowhere saying I'm an @$$hole. At which point I am rude right back, exactly like my search comment told them I would be. -
Quote:Every one of my characters is built from the concept first. Every single one. I have never looked at Mid's and said: "Wow, the numbers are great on that, I think I'll play one!"Bout time someone other then me speaks up.
I for one finally decided on a Scrapper combo that im very much enjoying right now.For my playing style it adds over all balance for ST, AoE, Def%, Resistance, high survivability, and a heal with bonus increased HPs from Dull Pain.
Im talking about a Spines/Invln.When I get to higher levels ill be adding the Blaze Epic for this Scrapper.
Why a Spines/Invln when I could have made a Elec/SD Scrapper?Simple.I dont use Mids, and I play what I like.I also built it for Concept, instead of building a concept around a Mids build.
The best is whatever you play comfortably with, and excell at.When you start min/maxing a game, it only means imagination and creativity dont apply to you.Nothin wrong with that, not everyone has the none logical spark like some others do.
Min/Maxers are logic based players, where as people like my self dont use logic. We do what feels good.
As for Mids users, my only issue with them is that the program lies more then it tells the truth.Thats why they are concerned with what they belive is the best and try to map out IOs before playing the character.Mainly becuase they cant play anything less. When other players like my self play combos they say are horrible, and excell far better then most who use Mids before IOs ever enter into our minds.
I second this guys post.
I take a concept I like and play the character for a while to make sure I still like it. Then, if I still like it, I'll open up Mid's and say "Okay, now what can I do with this character?"
Using Mid's and having a character concept are NOT mutually exclusive. You say you build from concept and don't use Mid's, as though using Mid's somehow ruins your concept. It doesn't.
We get that you don't like Mid's (for whatever reason it is), stop railing against it like it's cheating or something. It's NOT. -
Quote:The only enemy groups that have it before level 30 are (IIRC) Lost and Arachnos.Hmm...that's odd. My perception is probably skewed by the fact that Psi *seems* more prevalent than Fire, due to the glaring Psi hole that most armors have, which in turn makes Psi that much more dangerous when you do encounter it.
But really, only 2% of the damage type in the game? Huh. I suspect it's more prevalent late-game, which is where I tend to spend most of my play time. -
Quote:This.Dark Armor isn't hitting any resistance caps (except maybe psionic if you go completely nuts), but let me see what I have:
53.7% smashing/lethal
It is VERY easy to get higher psionic resistance than I have. My Obsidian Shield has nothing but a Steadfast Protection unique in it. If I added, say, three resistance IOs to it I'd be at 65.4% psionic resistance. It's just that psionic damage is so rare that I didn't want to "waste" the slots on it.
25.8% energy
52.5% negative
39.7% fire/cold
26.6% toxic
43.5% psionic
Dark Armor's best resistance potential is, oddly enough, psionic (rather than the negative energy you'd expect), and it CAN be capped if you want to pick up psi resist bonuses.
Fiery Aura will cap Fire resistance by accident, but you're not going to cap anything else. -
