I play a Dark Armor tank that's never been kicked from a team. It's about as far from perceived as "uber powerful and FotM" as it gets. That hasn't stopped me from getting on teams, and it hasn't gotten me kicked.

I'm pretty sure the problem here is you. Not your builds. Not your characters. Not your choice to avoid using Mids. You.
Little confused Dechs. Were you talking to ME? Or agreeing with my point?

    Kinda hard to tell there.
  2. More on the min/maxing side of things.

I set certain goals with some characters. I use Mid's to figure out how to meet those goals.

For example: I decided that I would like to softcap S/L defense on my fire/kin, and get a reasonable amount of E/NE defense as well. So, I open Mid's and figure out a few things. The first thing I ask myself is: "Can I achieve my goal without making the character unplayable?". I have already determined that for S/L defense the answer is "Yes". My secondary goal is reasonable E/NE defense. Since "reasonable" is not a set number it is up to me to determine a number for it. I came up with a build that achieves both things.

I used Stone Mastery on that build and took the following powers: Fissure (a targeted AoE stun that does decent damage, will do good daage while Fulcrum Shift is active), Rock Armor (a large part of my S/L defense), Seismic Smash (a very high damaging melee attack that is ALSO a mag FOUR hold, this one is a no brainer. It will deal almost 1000 damage with FS and Containment), Earth's Embrace (Since I'm short on slots I needed something here that doen't need a lot of them)

I feel no need to buy purples or PvP sets to consider a build good. I use Mid's before the character is level 50 just so I get an idea of what recipes I need to hang onto as I level.

Is that min/maxing? I'd say it is a moderate level of min/max. I'm not obsessed with having the best build I possibly can, but I DO want to meet the goals I set for myself with it, so I min/max it just enough to reach them.

If someone kicks me from a team because I don't have 5 purple sets in my build, I probably didn't want to team with that person to begin with.
  3. Well, I'm not going to go out of my way to be nice here.

I use Mid's to get an idea of what I'm going to do with a character I already have. Mid's doesn't play any part at all in determining what that character is.

I just recently created my first fire/kin EVER. Not because I'm a min/maxer, and not because I want to farm (I farm when I have insomnia and want to fall asleep quickly). I made a fire/kin because it fit the character's concept and I like teh synergy of the sets.

As far as the getting booted from teams goes:

If you're as arrogant and egotistical in the game as you tend to be on the forums, then I can't say it surprises me that you get booted from teams. It's unlikely that EVERYONE you team with is a powergamer to the point that your build is unacceptable, which means your personality is probably playing a part in it. Some of the things I've seen you post, had you said them to me in-game I would have booted you too, and probably put you on /gignore.

I was just making the point that in the particular instance outlined in the OP, the behavior isn't especially strange.

Yes, one or more enemies will sometimes flee. The level of the enemies themselves doesn't really matter. But when you are level 37 fighting level 33s, you should expect more of them to run.

Would be a great place to add some more 20-30 content, especially if it revolves around the Banished Pantheon, which is an enemy group that is (IMO) underutilized in the game.

I think Dark Astoria is an awesome zone, I just wish there was something to DO in it.
  6. I'm 30 years old, so I'm one of the younguns of this thread.

This thread goes a long way toward proving a theory I've had for a while now.

I theorized that a large part of why this playerbase is one of the friendliest of any MMO is because the average player age is quite a bit higher than most other games out there.

The twits that make people not want to play games because of the elitist attitude and general rudeness probably average 25 years old. From what I've seen the average age in CoH is closer to 35.

The older you get, the more you realize that how cool you are isn't determined by how mean you can be to someone asking a perfectly reasonable question.

Our forums are pretty friendly, and in-game I've found that real jerks are few and far between, for the most part. Sure, there's plenty of idiots, but relatively few people that are intentionally mean.

I chalk that up to the fact that a lot of the players here have outgrown the "I'm going to pick on you because you're different and everyone else is picking on you too." stage of their life. We've all done it to some degree or another, and I've always felt that the indicator of what kind of person you are was whether or not you felt bad about it later. (I always did, but I can't speak for everyone)

So, rock on older players! You are a large part of the reason this game has the friendliest community around!

mind/empathy controllers with only SO builds ought to be able to defeat Ghost Widow
8 Mind/Emps would SHRED Ghost Widow.

Everyone on the team Forted at least twice? Check.
    Constant double RA's? Check.
    Adrenaline Boost on everyone? Check.
+120% damage from 8 Assaults? Check.
Ranged damage/mez powers that deal all their damage at once instead of DoT? Check.

Ghost Widow would be TOAST against that team.

    Wrong.
Every foe I hit ran. Not only did he run, the Freaks with him ran.
They scattered to the ends of the map.
    Then they got stuck.

What should have been a 5 minute milk run turned into a 25 minute "Find the Missing Freak" hunt.
I finally found the last flying Juicer Freak stuck up in the overhead rafters behind a corner cross-joint.

I know this is not a rare occurrence... it hits at all levels of play on all sizes of teams... this just happened to be an glaring example of code run wild.

So, please, to the Powers-that-be, rethink the AI code for Fleeing foes, and put an end to ridiculously fleeing foes.

    VR-
You were 4 levels above them, what did you expect?

Ever smack a level 1 Hellion at level 5? He runs for the hills too.

Not a case of them behaving strangely. Wouldn't you run from a guy that there is absolutely no chance of you ever injuring?

I mean, seriously, a WP tank fighting -4's? I'm surprised anything stayed on the map after you squashed the first one.

It will be brutes or stalkers (coin flip as to which), or possibly even new versions of each patron pool for all blueside ATs (and vice versa for Epic pools for redside ATs)

I'm not anti-healer at all. I just get annoyed with people who think any other kind of defender is useless.

If you have a Dark Miasma defender (or corruptor even) on the team, chances are a healer would be completely redundant.

The worst case I ran across: Empathy defender who took the Medicine pool, so he could have TWO rezzes. He didn't even HEAL people, he just let them die and rezzed them. I kicked that guy off the team, and I'm usually pretty patient with other people's playstyles. If all you're going to do is stand around until someone dies.....sorry, but you're useless.

Right...because that healer clear on the other side of the map is going to keep the blaster that just agroed an 8 man spawn alive.

My wife won't even play her Empath anymore, largely because of people like the leader of that team seems to be. She got tired of blasters running 4 rooms ahead of the team, then faceplanting and blaming her because he died. And she also tired of tanks thinking that her job was to use her powers on no one but them.

Me? I don't even HAVE an Empath, for all the same reasons.

THAT is something totally different than Grandville and COV; THAT is bait and switch substitution that occured AFTER consumers paid forward on a preorder and the promise of getting a COMPLETE retail product in July.

And that is a big problem (or its going to be very soon).
The first part of that has been answered by others. Ultra Mode was never intended to be part of Going Rogue, it is just a graphics upgrade available to anyone with a powerful enough computer to run it. You don't need to buy Going Rogue to have access to it, and they never implied that you did. It was also mentioned that if they could release it before Going Rogue, they would do so.

The second part (about the bait and switch) I'm going to address:

The Incarnate system wasn't announced until this past week, WELL after pre-orders were made available. You can't complain about having to wait for something that you didn't even know about when you plunked down your pre-order money.

Not even close to a bait and switch. A bait and switch would be promising you something for your money, and then replacing it with something else after you've paid. They are giving you EXACTLY what they promised you for your money: Going Rogue in July, and access to parts of it NOW. The Incarnate system was not promised to anyone for their pre-order money, and it is just ludicrous to complain that you have to wait for something that was never promised to you.
  16. From what I've seen, CO serves the purpose of making CoH look better by comparison.

I considered playing CO...until I found out more about it and saw the graphics. Pretty much killed it for me.

Just wanted to make a point about this.

People who complain that some of the servers are "dead", and then switch to Freedom because of it, are only making the problem worse.

The game isn't dead at all. But the fact that everyone and their grandmother is moving to Freedom for "easier teaming" is contributing to that perception.

Otherwise seems kind of pointless...unless their recruiting you to come to their server.
Global channels are basically channels that are cross server. They don't let you team with people on other servers, but they can help you find teams no matter where you are.

Example: You're playing on Triumph and you see in PinnBadges that a Statesman Task Force is forming on Pinnacle. You can then switch to a character on Pinnacle to run the TF, which you wouldn't have known about if not for the channel.

What are your usual playtimes? I play almost exclusively on Pinnacle and I'd be happy to team with your 50's and give you a chance to learn how to play them again. (I have several nearly indestructible characters, so if you slip up becaause you forgot something, it won't get me killed )

I'm so glad you feel they're entitled to my money 9 months before they actually deliver the whole product.
It's exactly the same as any other pre-order of something. But better in this case, because we get to play with some of the stuff in it a little earlier.

When you pre-order a console-based video game, you plunk down a portion of the money, and you still don't get to play it until it releases. This way, the parts of what you pre-ordered that are READY are accessible right away.

If you don't feel like they deserve your money now....don't give it to them. Those of us that did feel they deserved it will get to play with the stuff YOU will have to wait another 9 months to play with.

    Seems pretty simple to me.
  20. I made a Captain America ripoff right when Shield Defense came out. He was an MA/Shield scrapper, with the costume as close as I could get to Cap's in the costume creator.

I zoned in to Atlas and within 5 minutes some guy runs up and says to me "Hey, that's pretty good, you should see my Iron Man!"

    Oh yeah....my character's name?

    .....EULA Violation
  21. It keeps track of what you've been rewarded with.

I had a bug affect me as well, and I used the extra slot before I realized it was a bug. When my account caught up to where the bug placed me I was not awarded another slot, because it remembered that I had already been given one.

One thing I did notice though: Any bugged rewards won't be applied until you log in on the bugged character. In my case it was my main. After I logged him in after a long time of being logged off I had rewards granted. I have no idea how long he was actually bugged for prior to that.

I'd finish the Hollows arc first, since you're already that far through it. If you run the Hollows arc at a low level you end up with 31 reward merits by level 15-ish. They'll come in handy later.

(you get 31 merits for the ENTIRE Hollows arc, that is: Wincott, Flux, Julius, Talshak)

You could also gain a couple more levels and head to Faultline. There's a new series of arcs there that is pretty cool if you haven't done it yet.
  23. If I had the inclination to level another regen I'd probably make it BS or Katana, and I'd use information gained here to do so.

But....my Fire/Regen just hit level 40 and I'm focusing on him for now. So many scrappers, so little time.

    That was never the idea.

The idea was to draw PvEers into PvP zones in the hope that they might try and enjoy PvP. The fact that it didn't work out like that doesn't change the fact that it was the original intention.

There are curently FOUR zones in the game that you are subject to attack by another player in.

The idea that players are being "lured" or "forced" into PvP zones is ludicrous. There is nothing in any of those zones that you need to have. Badges and temp powers are not required, they are things that players WANT to acquire.

If there was a badge that you needed to have to unlock high level content, and it was located in a PvP zone, I'd call foul myself. But the simple fact is, the only thing there is to do in a PvP zone besides PvP is increase your badge total and get some temp powers.

Why do people act like being attacked by another player is such a huge crime? Does the idea that you can actually lose bother you THAT much?

You can ask a player not to attack you all you want. There is no rule written anywhere that says they are obligated to listen.

If you enter a PvP zone, you are acknowledging that you might be attacked by another player.

    Okay, analogy time:

You walk into a canyon. At the entrance of the canyon you see a sign that says: "Danger: Falling Rocks".

Now, you have been warned that the possibility of being struck by a falling rock exists in this canyon. If you choose to enter the canyon anyway, you are acknowledging and accepting that risk. Now, of course you're not agreeing to be hit by a falling rock, who in their right mind would? But you are accepting that you MIGHT be hit. Complaining about it later is kind of silly.

PvP zones have a countdown before anyone can attack you, and when you enter the zone you are out of range of anyone anyway. You have to CHOOSE to enter the zone before you are eligible to be attacked.

Once you enter the zone, you have accepted the risk of being attacked.

WHY is that so hard to understand?
