TWO powersets reduced to one power. No mention of what the primary was either. Which is exactly why I have no patience for playing kinetics, some people seem to think that you exist for the sole purpose of speed boosting them and have no business doing anything else.

LOL, I wasn't saying you had to change it, I was just letting you know for future reference to save some confusion down the road.

Eventually you'll probably want some advice on what powers to choose or how to slot them, and it really helps to know what primary and secondary powersets you have in order to give advice.

A Fire/Energy blaster plays very differently than a Sonic/Devices blaster, which plays differently than an Ice/Ice blaster.

Similarly, a Spines/Dark Armor scrapper will play very differently than a Dark Melee/Super Reflexes scrapper, and both will play differently than a Claws/Regen scrapper.

Advice I would give for any one of those builds might not apply to another, or might even be BAD advice for another.

At this point, it doesn't matter what you're playing. You're having fun, that's the important part. But when you ask "How do I make this character better?" or "What power should I take at level 22?" it's kind of important to mention what powersets you have so we have a context to make suggestions in.

For the record, your character's origin is pretty much completely irrelevant. The only thing it has any effect on is what enhancements you will be slotting (Dual Origin and Single Origin enhancements must match your origin in order for you to use them), and what temp power you start the game with.

In telling us here on the forum what you are playing, the accepted form is Primary/Secondary Archetype. So if I were to tell you the character I'm playing it would be Fire/Energy blaster, or katana/willpower scrapper.

Glad you're having fun with it, the game IS pretty awesome, and it will keep getting better as you play. If you should ever find yourself on the Pinnacle server, look me up, my global is @Claws and Effect.
  4. There are a few SGs on Pinnacle I try to avoid if I can, but not to the extent of quitting a team if one of them happens to be on it.

However, if a member of them is leading the team I'll bail as soon as I get a chance to without screwing the other team members. It's mostly that those SGs have a mentality about the game that doesn't mesh well with my enjoyment of it. I don't necessarily WANT to speed run everything I do in the game, and those SGs insist that anything they do must be done as fast as possible so they get their shinies and can move on to the next thing.

I've also noticed a tendency towards incompetence from a couple SGs, so I avoid them when possible to avoid the headaches associated with playing with idiots. And I mean the kind of idiots that insist they know everything about the game after playing for a week, and refuse to listen to anyone else.

Defense based sets in general don't do well in PvP. This is because everyone builds for as much accuracy as possible via power choices and IOs.

Also, Diminished Returns hits your defenses pretty hard, if you're softcapped DR will put you at barely more than 30%. Since SR doesn't have anything BUT defense to keep it alive, once your opponent nullifies your defense you don't really have anything else to fall back on.

This isn't just an SR problem, Ice, Energy Aura, Ninjitsu, and Shield all have similar issues, but they all bring more than JUST defense. Ice has a Dull Pain clone, Energy has some resistance and a heal, Ninjitsu has a heal that is basically a renamed Reconstruction, and Shield has a passive HP boost and a little bit of resistance. SR has defense, and nothing else.

That said, I've seen some SRs do well in zone, but they are fighting an uphill battle, and probably had crazy expensive builds.

Not an exact copy. The CoH claws are mounted in a box on the back of your hand, which Wolverine's don't have.

You're probably going to say that it's just semantics, but that's all copyrights really are anyway. They are not identical, so they can't complain. That's how musicians get away with ripping each other off, which happens constantly. There is enough difference between them that you can't complain.

I get the impression from your post that you're the kind of person that doesn't call 911 if you see a convenience store being robbed either, since you're not a police officer and it isn't YOUR job to ensure that laws are enforced. I mean, you're not being paid to report crimes, so why should you bother, right?

Before you get all indignant, no, there really isn't much difference between sending a petition about a EULA violation and reporting a crime you witnessed. They both involve assisting the people whose responsibility it is to enforce rules. If you don't want to be viewed as a "tattletale", by all means don't do it. But don't act like you're somehow better than the people who take some responsibility for things they see around them. The devs cannot be everywhere at once, much like the police, and need the public's assistance with enforcing the rules we ALL agreed to.

If you plan on doing any PvP at all, Weapons has Web Grenade, which can help keep your target in reach of you. Caltrops is useful as well, and Targeting Drone gives you a place to put a set of Gaussian's for the defense bonus (if you need it)

Unless PvPing most scrapper players probably go with Body or Blaze, especially now that Body has Physical Perfection (it's a relatively new power)

Btw, Melt Armor sucks, don't take it.

    Truth.

Suprised no one really delved into this tidbit yet (I didn't mention it because I figured someone else did while I was typing my first post)

It is flat out impossible to see everything in the game before you get to level 50 on your first character. That's why people encourage rolling alts. I've been playing for almost 5 years and still occasionally run across a story arc I've never done before.

On the population part of it: A lot of new players get the impression that the game is dead, this is not true. Most of the game takes place in indoor instances called missions, there's none of the "Stand around here for an hour until this dude spawns so you can kill him and get the dealy he's carrying, which he only drops 1 in 5 times", so you don't see groups of people just standing around. Also, travel between missions in this game is extremely quick, so you probably won't see more than a couple people running around in any given zone at once.

Because of that, shouting in Broadcast that you're looking for a team is not very effective at actually finding you one. When you decide on a server to play on, go down to the server forums and look for the global channels for that server (Example: the Pinnacle server has PinnBadges), people in missions or other zones (or even other servers) can see that channel and perhaps invite you, where broadcast is limited to only that specific zone.
  10. Well, we have Shield Defense, even though there are a limited number of shield users in comics.

As Roderick said, it's not so much a matter of copyrighted powers as it is unnecessary limitation. If you want your energy blaster to be wearing a suit of powered armor, you can use the costume creator to reflect that. Look at Positron in the game, he's wearing a suit of power armor, yet his powers are those of a standard Rad/Rad defender.

As far as a power ring goes....exactly what powers would be IN that set? Can you define a singular theme for a set that revolves around a ring? I can't....but I CAN think of a way any powerset in the game could be connected to a ring. In that case, it's a lot easier to let the player's imagination fill in the gaps than it is to try and shoehorn their idea into a powerset for them.

Some ideas are too narrow for an entire powerset (like eyebeams) and some are way too wide to fit in 9 powers (like power armor or a power ring) So, it makes more sense for the players to define how their powers work than to have people screaming "THAT'S NOT HOW POWER ARMOR WORKS!!!!"

I got 3 scrappers, martial, dual blades and electric melee.
Martial is getting blaze mastery for sure, the only APP I really like.
But with the elec melee I got no clue, she is a speedster and theres nothing that fits. Even if I go villain in GR and I get the Mu Patron for scrappers... the red lighting doesnt fit with the character.
The dual blades character could end getting body mastery. Anyone knows if the eye beam and energy torrents are red, like tanker?
Any advice? Im really lost in this matter.
Yes, the Laser Eyes and Energy Torrent are red.

You left out one of the more important details on choosing an APP....your secondary with those characters.

If you have an end hungry secondary (like Dark Armor or SR) I suggest Body Mastery for Physical Perfection.

There's also the fact that you don't HAVE to take an APP. If nothing fits your Electric scrapper, you aren't required to take one, though in that case I would take Conserve Power and Physical Perfection from Body Mastery, because they are powers with no visible change to he character.

    1. I am coming from WoW ( very bored with that game ) and was always the tank. In every instance i was the tank...i am freaking sick of being the tank...I am looking to be DPS on this game, with at least my first char. Any tips on what sets to use? Im still very noobish..right now as i havent even played the game yet, but i have Paragon wiki pulled and am reading but i would also like to hear some tips straight from u guys who are active right now..so with that said..thanks for your patience and im a fast learner...
First off, welcome to the game!

Second, the first thing you should know before you dive in is: There is no "holy trinity" here. The Tank/Healer/DPS team makeup is not necessary. You can do just about anything in the game lacking one or more of those things. You don't need a tank to keep things alive. Healers aren't necessary to keep the tank alive. Everything does damage, not just "DPS classes"

That said, a Scrapper or Brute would probably suit you well. They are melee fighters who are fairly resilient, but usually aren't expected to take the agro for a team.

I suggest Katana/Willpower (scrapper) or Super Strength/Willpower (brute) for ease of play when starting out. But that's just a suggestion, if something else looks cool to you, try it out. It is almost impossible to gimp yourself in this game, pretty muc any combination of powersets you slap together will be playable.

Also, the game was designed to be very alt friendly. Not only can you split your time between multiple characters, but you are actually more or less expected to. I'm currently actively playing probably a dozen characters. It helps you not feel so much like you're stuck in only one role on a team.

Another thing: There is no rush to get to the level cap. There isnt a whole lot of content that you have to be level 50 to run (50 is the cap here). It's a common mistake people make when coming over from other games. They get used to all the good stuff being at the level cap and they get there and say "So, where's the game at?". Umm, you rushed past it trying to get to the cap as fast as possible.

There isn't really any "gear" per se. Well, there is, but it's not nearly as important as in that "other game". We have Enhancements that improve our powers. There is no need to get the next Magic Sword of Whomping Stuff. You don't need to meet any specific requirements to get on a team either (at least you shouldn't, anyone who requires anything specific is most likely just being a jerk)

The community here is AWESOME, I'm sure a couple people fell all over themselves to answer your question since I started typing my answer. That's how we are here, we welcome new players with open arms, because we all remember when WE were new players, and how nice it was that people took the time to help us out.
  13. I report blatant violators.

Guys like the one named "Psi-colps" who looked very similar to a certain X-Men character, and was standing around in Atlas spamming "I am xmen" every 10 seconds.

It amused me that he misspelled the ripoff's name.

Right after Shield Defense came out I made a blatant ripoff of Captain America myself, as close as I could get it. I named the character "EULA Violation" and hung out in Atlas with him for a while. I had several people (who were also playing ripoffs) comment on the costume and give me advice on improving it. There were at least 5 Captain America clones in Atlas at the time, and as far as I could tell none of them realized I was making fun of them.

I stripped the BotZ out of my BS/DA (my main needed them) and I'm still hovering around 35% to ranged and AoE. And yup, he's still a beast.

The softcap isn't strictly necessary for a Dark Armor, and I decided I wasn't willing to sacrifice any more from my build chasing it. I can still softcap when I feel the need by popping a single small purple, so I'm not concerned with trying to get back there, since I was barely there and at the edge of endurance sustainability anyway.

This might be that my first defensive toon was an SR toon, so anything sub 90% DDR is 'Squshie'. However It drives me mad when my defense drops like a rock in a pool. I would rather be able to take more hits with extra HP than spend lots of money on defensive bonuses that will drop as soon as I get debuffed.
I have to disagree with this.

I have a Broadsword/Dark Armor scrapper with gobs of positional defense. Before I got that defense on him I was frustrated to the point of considering deleting the character. I was dropping so frequently that Soul Transfer wasn't recharging fast enough.

Yes, lack of DDR is occasionally a problem, but he no longer uses Soul Transfer as part of his attack chain. I have 40% to ranged and AoE, and I can keep melee well above the softcap with Parry. And even if defense debuffs strip my defense away, I still have my resistance to fall back on, and if that doesn't work I have the best self heal in the game. It's not like I'm giving up my resistances in favor of defense, they're still there, with defense on top of them.

Resistance and HP are great when you're a tank, not so great when you're a scrapper, since scrappers' HP cap is so comparitively low. Before getting defense on my BS/DA I tried surviving with pure resistance, and found that Dark Regeneration was not recharging fast enough to keep me alive, and even when it did recharge fast enough I frequently died during the animation. Also, Dark Regeneration uses a LOT of endurance, when I was forced to rely on it heavily I found my end bar dwindled quickly.

Adding defense to a resistance based set just makes the set that much better. Resistance reduces the amount of damage you take from any given attack. Wouldn't it be beneficial to reduce the number of attacks it has to reduce the damage of?

You've met Fire/Kins that live that long?
  17. Another that comes to mind is the Claws/Stone brutes that still exist on test (that combination is disallowed on live)

The slews of bugs that could be created when someone transfers a character with powersets that have been changed on test, but haven't made it to live yet. The devs have enough bugs to deal with without creating more every day for them to fix.

Another sticking point is that the server has no way of knowing that the original character ever existed. In order for it to know that, they would have to store every character that has EVER been deleted. That would be millions of characters I'm sure. I mean, how many characters have you created and then deleted when you realized the powersets didn't mesh like you thought they would? That would be a huge amount of storage space dedicated to storing characters no one will ever play again.
I can almost guarantee that when you delete a character it is gone.

    Edit: Aett - great minds

Exploits can be addressed and limits CAN be made.
Still doesn't address the level bump issue. And that would punish people who transferred characters with no intention of abuse.

More to the point: You chose to delete the original character, and the game should not be held accountable for a mistake you made of your own free will. People will find ways to exploit anything, and the way the training room is set up completely eliminates that possibility, your idea would create more work for the devs by forcing them to monitor every character that is transferred to ensure that no abuse is occurring.

It is really NOT hard to level a character nowadays. You can have those characters leveled up to where they were much faster now than you could then, and you may find that you like one of the powersets that didn't exist when you quit even better han the old characters.

I'm not trying to be a jerk about it, far from it in fact, because I have characters that I have regretted deleting myself. But, this is a highly exploitable and abusable feature you're asking for here, and I strongly suspect that if you PMed a dev directly your response would be a very politely worded version of "No way in hell"
  19. Combat Jumping.

You'll get more mileage out of it than Stealth.

Stealth A) slows down your movement, and B) suppresses half of it's defense in combat.

Combat Jumping actually speeds your movement up and doesn't suppress anything.

Both will allow you to slot a LotG, so you should take Combat Jumping because it has most of the advantages of Stealth, with none of the drawbacks.

The problem is this: The Chance for +End proc is a flat 10 endurance given to the target that is completely unconnected to recovery. In Lightning Field, that is working completely at odds with the point of slotting it for end mod.

Consider this: Lightning Field is taking away 4% of your enemy's endurance every 2 seconds (assuming it hits). All enemies other than AVs and GMs have 100 endurance, so you're taking away 4 endurance per tick. However, having the proc slotted means every tick will ALSO have a 20% chance to flat out give your target 10 endurance. So, if that proc fires it will completely undo the drain from the last 2 1/2 ticks. The proc will be working against the power it's slotted in, essentially making it pointless to run because the proc will be undoing all the draining you're doing with it.

The same thing happens with the proc in Power Sink. Yes, Power Sink floors their recovery, but, as I already noted, the Perf. Shifter proc functions independant of recovery. You will end up completely draining them, and giving them 10 endurance back at the same time. This is a problem because NPCs can still attack if they have ANY endurance (basically means anything less than a complete drain is pointless)

By slotting that proc in those two powers you are actually rendering one totally useless, and making the other an end recovery power and nothing more.

Slotting Lightning Field for end mod is a good idea, slotting the Perf. Shifter proc is not. Though on a Spines/Elec I would just slot for damage, and maybe throw an end mod in an extra slot. (I like Multistrike for toggle powers) I'd much rather focus on making the mob dead, rather than try to drain them. You will almost always get more mileage out of slotting Lightning Field for damage and throwing a single end mod IO in the last slot.

The 376 you're seeing is probably taking Blaze's DoT effect into account, making the damage seem much higher than it really is. Blaze has the chance for 4 ticks of DoT, that are usually around 25-30 damage at level 50, so that would make up the difference. However, in practice, Blaze's DoT isn't 100% reliable.

All of the tier 3 heavy hitters are fairly well balanced with each other, and the power description's have always been misleading.

Besides, Rad Blast was originally a Defender only powerset, and for a Defender 264 damage IS Extreme damage

At the moment, you can't at all.

When Going Rogue goes live, they are merging the markets, at which point Infamy, Influence, and Information will all be the same thing and tradable across sides.

As of now the release date is August 17th, so if you can wait a few weeks you'll be able to transfer your influence to infamy by sending yourself a global email with the inf attached to it.

Pretty easy to do. Just start a new email, and in the "To" field, type your own global name. Then type in the inf amount where it indicates, and type something in the subject and text boxes and click Send.
  24. Not going to happen.

Pretty simple reason really: It would be far too exploitable.

With all the IOs in the game that can make your character stupidly powerful, you could just copy one character multiple times and strip all those IOs off them to give to one character that you would then transfer back to live. That would give you A) an insanely powerful character, or B) ridiculous amounts of money from selling off the stuff that character brought over.

Also, when testing new powersets, the devs will frequently level bump characters so they can get feedback on how the set plays at high levels, and to make sure they test the whole set and not just the early powers. If you could transfer them to live you could end up with a level 35 or level 41 character that you didn't actually level. As much as the devs frown on powerleveling, I very much doubt they will ever give you the ability to have a high level character for doing literally nothing.

Tied to the level bumps: When level bumping happens you are often given enough inf to outfit your newly leveled character. You could just create new character after new character and pass the money to one character to transfer, and voila, millions upon millions of free influence.

Characters on test are restricted to test only for all of those reasons. That is why it is the Test server. It is meant to test characters and powersets, not give you a way to avoid earning the stuff you have (not that I'm saying you'd use it like that, but a whole lot of people would, that's why it's not allowed)

Sucks that you have characters on test that you deleted on live, but there's really nothing that can be done about it without opening the door to a LOT of exploitation.

On the plus side, it is a LOT easier to level now than when you played last. They smoothed xp so you don't get slowed to a crawl in the 30's, and you get Patrol XP for each day a character stays logged off (basically means that as long as you have Patrol XP you earn 1.5x XP). It is possible to get a character to 50 in under a month of casual play now, it can be done in a week of hardcore play, and a day if you cheat (no, I'm not going to tell you how, sorry, I could get banned for doing so, and YOU could get banned for doing it, not worth it IMO)
