Quote:No worries Michelle this is the 4th year of the contest and there is some of this carrying on it seems every year. Now I feel awful. If it weren't for the additional factor of the 'trailer description' borking things up, the voting might have gone very differently. I'm really, really sorry if that caused problems for the artists - I just offered to contribute something in the hopes that more people would take notice of the work you guys do.

Believe me it's not you or anything you have done that is at cause here.
I very much appreciate you offering your services as a prize.
@BW: I'm sorry to hear about your eyestrain, I have found out the kind of toll too many hours can take myself.
@DD Deep breaths my dear. To be fair I don't read anything BW has said as a personal attack on you.
He is talking about your art and not you the person behind it.

Quote:Hmmm...There is more than one way for popularity to influence people. If DD's entry was centered around someone like, say, Turbo-Ski who people here don't know anymore, I think we'd have seen a very different result.
I actually thought that DD did a fantastic job this month. I had her in first based entirely on the art, but this month was NOT about just the art. It was about both submissions and she had the weakest trailer by far. BW had strong showings in both and that's why I ranked him first and DD third. If this was about the poster alone, DD would have easily taken my first spot. Reading comprehension was obviously not a strong suit for everyone however.
Really, it just comes down to this section of the boards being focused on very different things. It's pretty obvious that people didn't vote based on the criteria given, it's been established that bewbs = votes, and I dare say that the majority of people here don't know what makes for quality work. There's no reason to change, as people like what they like, but it's certainly not the place for anyone who's looking for artistic feedback or appreciation. Thusly, it's not worth putting that kind of effort into. Instead, I recommend any new artist to the boards to do more ego stroking fanservice, more breasts and more copied artwork.
Briefly,
BW has done bewb-centric entries (Feb 2010 for example) that didn't win.
I won a month this year (January's entry)... no ego stroking, no fanservice, no copied artwork and, you guessed it, no boobs.
It also was not a popular character because were it not for the two times I have drawn Brahn there would be no art of him at all.
I won a month last year too... same deal
(while it did contain a popular character she was not the central focus of the piece).
Plenty of examples of winning pieces containing no popular characters.
Also plenty of popular pieces that didn't win. etc. etc. etc.
While I haven't always been happy with the voting results (I think every artist could say that at some point)
my experiences in this contest over the last two years don't jibe with your assessment Suichiro.
Do the people voting like popular characters and boobs? Of course.
Is that the sum total of deciding who wins a given month? Not even close.
There is one thing I agree with you on (and there is some evidence to back it up) and that is
people don't always vote based on the criteria they are given (though I don't think it's for the reasons you state).
P.S. What if DD had done Turbo-ski in a bikini would we have gotten the same result?
If it were that cut and dry BW could win any month he chose (just have a bunch of popular
characters with tons of bewbs for his entry)... he's the one choosing his subject matter after all.

Quote:And playing the devil's advocate I think he was wrong.I think BW is right to withdraw. It's been clear that this has been more of a popularity contest than a real creative contest, which is fine. Just not the place that really deserves so much effort.
I would also say the voting history doesn't back up the "popularity contest theory" either. Being someone who follows the votes closely and keeps his own separate counts and statistics I would say that while there have been a few cases of outright popular voting (i.e. someone votes for the same person first every time they vote throughout the year regardless of what that person submits for their art) it accounts for a very small part of the overall vote. Also there are plenty of cases where someone who is not the most popular person wins the month by virtue of his/her art alone (LousyDay's absolute destruction of all comers last January comes to mind... a few months later his entry was at the bottom of the heap and he was almost eliminated). Also plenty of times the most popular person at that time (depending on how you define popular of course) did not win.
It just doesn't add up.

Okay now I am wondering what exactly Sapphic Neko did to warrant all this awesome DD artz.
-
Colors came back really nice Comrade.
Graviton Girl's outfit still bugs me though. In the third panel see how the farside ...shall we say mountain peak...
is clearly in the blue while the other is completely within the red? In fact the red covers
most of the near breast going about 2/3's of the way toward her armpit.
Viewed from the other side it would be 2/3's in the blue.
Now look at GG's outfit in the 2nd panel (which is centered correctly).
It's like in panel three her outfit is facing
more toward us than her torso is.

Congratulations DD on the win.
Glad someone else pointed out the math so I didn't have to.
Quote:Back when the early points system proposed would allow someone to jump from 3rd place to 1st just because they got their entry in sooner (ridiculous in an art contest) I would've agreed it was a race with art involved. Now "early" only being worth 1pt and open to all not just the first posted entry I would say it's an art contest with a racing component added. So it's either a tie, or it's DD ahead by one (early bird point.)
This one is so up in the air that it's anyone's guess, though I still have lingering issues with the nature of people's votes and the "Early Bird" mechanic. When it's this tight, it re-enforces the notion that it's not really a creative competition, but a race with art involved.
A fine distinction perhaps but relevant.
Next year if/when someone else wants to host I'm sure they'll have their own ideas on how they think it should be done as well
and it would be good to have discussion like this early (maybe even before the contest starts) so we can
come up with a fair system that keeps things interesting but maintains it's focus on the art.
Quote:..........As for the nature of people's votes.. it's very difficult to keep track of that and even harder to control.................
*pulls out pocket watch on a chain and swings it back and forth* You are getting very sleeeeepy... you will vote for monkieees...
The best thing I could suggest is to try and get a larger segment of the forums in on the voting somehow.
Sheer volume of votes would keep any one element from having too much sway on the final score
and larger numbers of interested people checking out the contest would be even more
inspiring for those taking the time to create the artz.
While a small group jury with a consistent set of criteria would get a more
proper result it would exclude the majority of the forums from
participating. Many might just tune out altogether.

I like these quickies you're doing Cami.
You convey quite a bit with just a few simple colors.
I think sometimes I rely too much on complexity/detailing to "sell" the piece.

You'd still go to see a movie about Sapphic Neko first.

Will you finish your original idea at some point (once your arm starts to behave properly again that is)?..............................
I would like to go back and complete my original idea, even if it's just for the fun of it.

Think I'll pass on the new login screen.

Nice work on the updates DD.
Are you going to do more with her hair?
-
Cool glad to see K hit the ground running.

J.F. and B.E. make a winning combination for sure!

Quote:Out of curiosity can't you take a burning/exploding building from the Steel Canyon event and swap a hospital into the demo file? Possibly combine the two?To remind the entrants of the kind of stuff I can do... I discovered (while working on my 2nd I21 teaser) that I can, in fact, fit a Rikti dropship inside a hospital so I can create an explosion large enough to engulf a building...

The drop ship idea is genius though.
P.S. with more than one person not posting an entry/dropping will there still be an elimination Bubba?

Typing anything out is slow going but I'll try to get something up before midnight just so I'm not out on a technicality.
Unfortunately I've been having twinges in my shoulders and odd tingling along the back of my arms as of late.
I've stopped for the time being anything that involves repetitive or stressing movements
i.e. playing drums/weightlifting/using my wacom etc (this is only the second
time in the last 25 days I've even turned any of my computers on).
Light pencil sketching didn't give me any problems today but I'm taking frequent breaks
and going slow with everything until I have more time to heal up.
Edit: Trailer text added above.

Nice one OminousVoice.
Quote:Always liked that Androsym painting.Honestly, I do not know. My comp came with it like that.
Once again, I really don't know if it violates something or notMy comp came with CoH and that log in installed direct from the manufacturer....
Heh heh. Mine came from the manufacturer that way too...
This has been my login for the last few months...
Quote:Not as far as I know. As long as no one discusses OPENLY how one goes about digging through game files, or some such... and some discretion is given to talking about any and all substitutions of this nature.
I would refer you for examples to Corva's and Vanden's Icon Packs, and the various Vidiot Maps. All of which operate on a similar principle. Also there is a thread somewhere on how to silence certain in-game SFX, which also works through the same process. -

Note: this is not my original idea but I wanted to get something in before the deadline that wouldn't be too taxing.
For typing brevities sake FI= fade in FO=Fade out etc.
FI: A backshot of a skinny frail looking scientist in his lab tinkering with several vials of liquid. FO
FI: close up of his face shows him to be clearly insane (one of the crazy looking villain faces)
He thrusts his hands into the air in a "Eureka I've done it!" gesture.
He then grabs two vials and mixes the contents but before he drinks it down he goes into... FO
FI: dream sequence of himself drinking down his concoction and suddenly there is a weird shift and his body outline spreads out in waves on either side of him (one of the costume change emotes) and POOF there are now two of him. They give each other the thumbsup and both start to spread out/shift again POOF there are now four evil scientists. POOF now eight. FO
FI: there is now a small army of cloned scientists running about committing various crimes (robbing banks, stealing purses, pummeling Statesman, throwing a barrage of snowballs at pedestrians in the middle of summer... you know truly evil stuff) ending with a shot of all of them doing a simultaneous victory emote. FO
FI: day dream has ended and he is now just about to drink his concoction when over his shoulder a portal opens and out of it spills a mass of Rikti!
Flash to a view of a Rikti firing his pulse weapon at the scientist and him being blasted through the air. He lands in a heap and the Rikti proceed to blast everything.
The attack ends and the Rikti all retreat back through the portal except for...
The portal dissappears and as the camera sweeps across the now ruined laboratory it spots a lone Rikti monkey.
Zoom in: The monkey holds a vial of liquid in its hands and quickly drinks it down and shatters the glass on the floor. It doubles over and POOF it begins to multiply rapidly. FadeToBlack.
beat: CITY (word or part of the official logo if possible appears on a black background)
beat: OF (appears beneath it)
beat: MONKIES!
the words "Coming Soon" scroll across.
Screen goes dark for an instant and then briefly shows a scene of Atlas Park beseiged by waves of monkies. After a second or two one runs past turns to face the camera/viewer and launches himself at it/you.
Screen blackens just as it's face/teeth fill the screen. -

Quote:Great job on these! And I love seeing the animations you made.I have two animations of WIPstages of the last finished piece (the sleeping guy and the cat-creature) for those interested.
The Cat-creature:
And the sleeping dude:
Sorry if this one isn't bigger.. my pc is having trouble processing... all the seperate pictures are over 8mb you see... and I don't feel like resizing 'm *giggles*.
Don't have WIPstages of the sheets though. Completely forgot. *shrugs*.

Nice work Burning Brawler.
I like the girl doing the "get some" spank emote (lol) and
the masked guy cracking his knuckles. The central figure looks cool too.
I think it might look better as a vertical though, unless you need it this way for a desktop wallpaper,
(i.e. trim the empty space on the sides from the background) as all that space makes it feel kinda empty.
Also you could enlarge the guy in the back/top position just a little so he fills the gap better.

Really like Cold Flake and the expression on Malice too.
Nice work all around BW.
