Quote:okay, this I have to take issue with. Could you explain why an anti-mez power is "useless" or "disappointing"? Or are you just a player who can't stand powers that are for your teammates and not yourself?
***
My most useless / disappointing power(s) are:
Burn: from the Fire Aura set. It's just too situational for even my task-force dedicated builds to use.
...
Gotta agree with Burn, especially on a Brute due to the way it works (for 2 seconds) with Fury. Big disappointment on my Stone/Fire when I realised that it was losing the Fury damage buff after a few seconds, my Shake-and-Bake Brute just didn't pan out as planned. Ground my way (mostly solo) through the most End-heavy and torturous Teens of any toon I've ever had just to encounter it.* -
Quote:On my EU one. Any US comments would go to the US @Carnifax (which also happened to be me).AE hasn't used the tell feature in a long time though. Presumably the current system is be able to distinguish between 2 accounts that share the same global as with your situation, though I would be interested on a confirmation on this too.
Edit: actually I'm a bit unclear on your situation: was the arc in question made on your EU or US account?
I dunno what would happen now though, it was a long time ago close to when the AE system first came out. How does the AE system deal with Comments now? -
Quote:I'd love to.
I'd love to play a game that mirrors the interface and interaction of City of Heroes, but allows you to play as Positron or Statesman, or some other signature characters.
Basically, playing CoH AS them.
So DCUO then? (in before GG gets here and says it).
Personally I hate the idea of not playing my own unique little snowflake in an MMO. -
Quote:You don't actually need it that much though. Stun does fine generally. On the Controller side Flashfire+Cages (always do it that way aroundOMG, take the Fire Cages. Cages + Flashfire = Ghetto Hold.
*) is fairly nice, at least the Cages get Containment Damage too. But it's always dependent on what other powers you're going to use to follow up the combo (on my Fire/Rad controller I use Flashfire > Fissure > Cages).
* If you do get Cages use it sparingly and wisely. Don't go negating all that lovely soft control your Secondary can bring. Since Cages doesn't do Containment for Domis I really don't see it as being too important. If somethings being bold and running off I'd try and either hold it or knock it off its feet. -
Quote:Actually no, this is slightly incorrect. An EU player won't see a US players comments because there are separate Global Name lists between the two.Yes, people from both sides can play and rate/comment on your arc.
I'd proof of this recently when I switched to my reactivated US account (but both with @Carnifax as the global) and a Global Tell MA comment from a while back was the first thing that popped up at me.
And it was a nice one too. A lovely way to restart my US account -
Quote:Quoting this, especially for the last line. Completely true, we're not criticizing just to criticize. The main problem is that the guide is heavily slanted towards your own play-style and tends to disregard other powers and considerations because they don't fit that playstyle (I've done the same in the past).I agree with a lot of things in your guide, Haze, but I've got to say that I think Quicksand is one of THE BEST powers in the set. That 25% defense debuff is huge for a click and drop AoE power, and makes all of the enemies in its radius almost helpless to defend against your AoE holds, KDs, and mezzes. It's especially great for Stalagmites, which has a very low base accuracy. It's one of the powers in the set that I use the most.
I'll mention the AoE Immob thing again, too. As long as you aren't trying to use it on green or lower enemies, Earthquake will just bounce around enemies in its radius while you go to town with your hammer. If someone throws down an AoE immobilize then the mob can't move around, but they can just shoot you from a distance, while they'd be unable to attack at all if left bouncing around in Earthquake. THERE IS AN EXCEPTION TO THIS! STONE CAGES WORKS VERY WELL WITH WATER SPOUT AS A MEANS OF DAMAGING AND MEZZING ENEMIES WITHOUT SENDING THEM FLYING ALL OVER THE MAP.
Lastly, you didn't mention the Stun in Fissure, which I find as useful as the Knockdown and the damage. The stun doesn't activate 100% of the time, but it's still useful for stacking stuns on mobs.
The Epic pool selections for this set really give you a chance to personalize an Earth/Earth. Soul Mastery's Soul Drain is amazing when used on enemies who are on a space with stacked Quicksand and Earthquake, and it's also good for using dark Consumption. Mu Mastery's Surge of Power will give you more resistance while you're running around in melee against enemies much less squishy than you are, and it has Power Sink. Mako Mastery has Water Spout, which works well with Stone Cages and Quicksand as another means of mezzing enemies.
Hope anything I've put down is helpful. Please don't get discouraged by any criticism of your guide. People are just trying to help you improve on it. We post because we care!
* Consider this version your "pre-editorial" version and have a look at making another draft maybe taking in some of the things people have said here and it would be a very useful resource for other players considering the same combo. -
TP -> Eclipse -> Mire -> Target Minion -> Gravity Well -> Shadow Blast -> Unchain Essence (on now-dead minion) is great fun too. A lil crashless mini-nuke, although I didn't take Unchain and Shadow Blast until the 40s. Then I'd usually go Nova form, fly straight up and unleash the AOEs straight down (so the knockback becomes knockdown).
Gravitic Emanation and Inky Aspect is your "I want to play Controller for a bit" combo. Knock them into a wall and stun the majority then jump in so Inky kicks in and use Grav Well on a choice Lieut. I tend to then flick to Dwarf to start scrankering (did I spell that right?), spamming Mire every 10 seconds and using the melee attacks. If I see that my nuke is recharged while I am then Dwarf Mire, flick back to human form and Quasar, blue, Stygian for the hilarity.
I can't wait for i17 *and the chance to remake a WS again (switching from EU to US means they're currently locked on me again). So many options and things to do in combat with them. -
Quote:Indeed. Test server is test. Complaining because it needed to be wiped to test something urgent is rather silly.*I agree with this actually.
This is a separate issue to the original thread. It states very clearly that the Test Server can be changed at any time for any reason - there's no security there relating to characters, items etc.
It's pretty harsh to lambast the Devs when they use common sense - there are 2 test servers so let them use one that causes the least disruption. That's what it's there for! -
Quote:* Storms stun is close up. Dark gets a ranged cone fear (with tasty debuff) and a ranged, auto-hit AOE stun (which also brings people back from the dead). And neither Storm or TA have an AOE heal and a healing pet in them.Trick Arrow already gets a second hold to allow it to quickly stack a hold on Bosses, so Petrifying Gaze isn't really an issue.
Fire/Storm, for example, can Stun a group of Bosses in two moves, so any arguments about Mind/Dark fearing a group of Bosses is kind of moot.
So I don't think its setting any new precedents for too much control.
It could be brought across but you'd probably have to see severe reworkings of some powers in order to do so (see Fissure and Mud Pots on Domis).*
I've a feeling Dark Blast will go to Blasters first and we might see a Dark Control set before Dark Miasma gets ported to controllers and if and when it is it'll be very closely looked at and rebalanced. -
Quote:I checked the in-game numbers and Defenders and Corruptors have the same radius. It's not AT modifiers, MM's just get a different version of Twilight Grasp..
Corruptor: 20ft radius
Defender: 20ft radius
(and for completeness, Mastermind: 10ft radius)
The acknowledgements have not come with any argument as to why MM's need a *different* balance to their set than Corruptors or Defenders (i.e. smaller heal but stronger Patch&Servant). All I see is an aversion to the weaker "regular" version of Dark Miasma (wider heal but weaker Patch&Servant), nothing as to why it'd be less balanced as a set.
Hey, I do too, it makes my MM stronger than it would be with the regular version of Dark Miasma. But I'm not talking about what I enjoy, I'm talking about what's balanced. And I don't believe this is as balanced as a normal (AT modifiers and all) version of Dark Miasma would be.
I've been thinking about this more and I'm fairly certain that a set with your new wide area heal and a healbot (which is what DS would most likely become if you changed him, rather than what he is now which is a debuff-bot people tend to summon in the middle of a spawn) would be pretty overpowered, especially for certain sets (Robots, Thugs and Merc namely).
People keep citing Defender and Corrupter versions, but MMs are different, AOEs interact differently for them because of how BG mode works.*
Giving a MM secondary *two* large, ranged (remember DS will stay at range unless wrangled), debuffing AOE heals (which need to hit but heal for much more than their non-ToHit versions) doesn't seem to be a good idea for an AT for which AOEs are a force multplier. Especially when you consider what else Dark brings to the table. -
Quote:But Tar Patch and Dark Servant are much more powerful than they should be. If Twilight Grasps AOE is increased then those two powers should be reduced as I previously posted above (and Dark Servant given the same recharge as the Defender version). That's be a considerable lowering of the sets effectiveness overall. If you're arguing that TG needs to be brought in line with other sets then those powers need to be too.but controllers do get Kinetics... I dont notice a reduction in area over a defender... that would be affected by your logic.
Quote:
If that means the inconsistencies in other areas like using the wrong values for Dark Servant or Tar Patch are also addressed, so be it - it's more likely the set would be balanced with the other MM secondaries that way than it is to muddle around with stronger Tar & Servant than it should have but weaker Grasp than it should have, and hope those balance out.
It sounds to me like some of the arguments for keeping things as they are - the ones that say they're worried it'd mean nerfs to those other inconsistent areas - aren't really arguments for balance, they're arguments to stay slightly more powerful than they know they're meant to be (i.e. they value the superior Tar & Servant more than they'd value the normal Grasp).
* Of course I value the Tar and Servant more than an AOE heal. You'd be mad not too. DS is almost certainly an aberration anyway especially combined with easy to get IOs (I know things aren't balanced around IOs, that refers to Game Difficulty. Powers are certainly changed to reflect how IOs interact with them : Empath controllers saw their top buff rendered almost useless on pets because of the No Recharge change. IOs almost certainly contributed to that). Still don't particularly want Dark to get another pass because as it it rocks as-is.
Even discounting DS as a true aberration which probably should be changed I'd prefer a stronger Tar Patch over a wider heal personally. -
Quote:Also Meleers can be awfully tetchy if your Grav/TA controller targets wormhole through them. Especially if you shout "FETCH BOY, FETCH!" at the same time. They're so unreasonable sometimes! It's only ever rude, on the same team, if you target through a melee character with knockback attacks and haven't cleared first with them. With any other attacks or AoE buffs? Of course it's not rude. Well, maybe when it comes to Brutes and you start Holding the stuff he's got attacking him, but that's a general thing and not specific to targetting through.
(in my defense is was to deliberately wind up an SG mate) -
I notice the OP mentioned Gloom too. So I assume you are a Kin/Dark? In that case there's even more reason to be spamming attacks through someone (like with my Dark/Sonic Blast) you're actually helping them out by blast-debuffing the foe, making the scrapper even harder to hit.

No, it really shouldn't be. I've no desire to see anyone else's, erm, parts thank you. Or talk about what I do with mine.
I tend to stick to the ingame music. Mostly because I've no music on Craptop due to lack of HD space (soon to be fixed with a wee bit of investment in at least a 500Gb laptop disk, larger if I can find it) -
Quote:Gloom is an attack.I'm not familiar with Gloom, but if it does no damage... how can they complain? You're not taking ANYTHING from them.
That's why I don't get the "drive by buffing" hatred. They are HELPING you and doing nothing to harm you...
I once stopped to Ice Arrow a rather nasty Lieut who was ambushing someone who was struggling in Talos (and got thanked nicely for it) and I'll often Fortitude someone as I float by.*
But I've never heard of someone on the same team being miffed about. He's either a weirdo or doesn't understand how teaming works here (or of course both). -
Quote:I for one have never understood why we get Influence or Infamy for letting our heroes / villains play in an amusement park for Superheroes. XP of course makes sense, both ingame and in terms of getting people to use the system. Tickets I can accept too (but we can't earn goldfish in a plastic bag. What sort of crummy Amusement Park is this, Aeon?). Inf I really don't get the rational behind at all at all. You can SO yourself with Tickets easily, why do we get Inf?This response is strange.
When the X-Men practice in their danger room they don't get any money, or accolades from the public or their heroic deeds.
They do get experience in how to deal with different situations.
I think your analogy needs a bit of refining, as it makes it sound like you're saying the only thing folks should get from AE is xp. Also I don't see AE as a danger room, based on the lore. It's more an amusement park for superheroes. -
Targetting through a Scrapper or Blaster on my team is how my Dark/Sonic defender worked. Nothing rude about it, common sense.
I'd just have obeyed him and not clicked on him again (so no Speed Boost) and made sure I wasn't "rudely" buffing him by ensuring he was out of range for the various Siphons and Heals. -
Quote:* Weirdly it actually suited my techbot Fire/Rad when I got it, looked like chunks of melted slag attached to his cossie. I think that says something about the prettiness (or lack thereof) of my Fire/Rad really. He's supposed to look like a beaten up, cobbled together bot and Poo Armour actually suits him.Yeah can't do //stone until they have pool customization. Tooooooo ugly.
Fissure and Seismic Smash are brilliant for any melee orientated Controller. Not only is Fissure quicker to cycle but it's got some unpredictable hard and soft control in there too (Fire tends to cancel the knockback though, although I tend to do Flashfire -> Fissure -> Cages rather than the more usual Flashfire -> Cages combo). Slotting the +Recharge PROC is really nice in there too.
Seismic is really, really good. Only issue with it vs bosses is the damage is so good sometimes that it can feel like a waste not to be Containing the target before hitting it, which is trickier vs bosses. Against a stunned Lieut it's glorious.* -
Quote:Actually:
* The duration even for a Controller is 27.9s. Enhanced to +95% that's 54.5s. So it's definitely not "60 seconds longer than most AoE holds," unless most AoE holds are -6 seconds long.
* The radius is 35ft, while most AoE holds are 20-30ft. It's not "over double" any other AoE hold. It's not quite double half the sets, and only about 17% larger than the other half.
* The duration is ABOUT twice the length of other AoE holds. They're all around 14.9s, with EMP Arrow being 27.9. It's not quite twice as long.
* You're right that it doesn't have an accuracy penalty, and damages machines, but you forgot:
* The recharge is 300s (5m) instead of 240s (4m).
* The endurance cost is 23.4 and you have -1000% recov for 15s. Most AoE holds are 15.6 end.
I wouldn't call it great. Certainly not one of the best powers in the game. Probably wouldn't call it useless or the worst power of 2010 either. Just sort of exists.
Ranged AOE holds are a 20 foot radius, EMP Arrows is nearly twice that. Only PBAOE Hold have a 25 foot radius, and PBAOEs aren't very good for opening fights. And EMP Arrow has a 50% chance of "critting" on everyone hit thus holding bosses too. Wonderful power.*
But I digress since we both agree it certainly doesn't belong in his thread as a Worst Power.
* I think I'd nominate the newly added Controller Epic World of Confusion, for the incredibly small radius. Or maybe Domi Mud Pots for the same reason. Any AOE Aura needs to be hitting a fair few enemies to be worth running and I can't see how either of these could be worth it. The effects of both are pretty good but the radius is just ridiculously small. Maybe not the "Worst powers" but possibly the "Worst Neutering of Powers" in the game -
Quote:I know I can't create Thor and it cheeses me off no end.
Not Marvel's Thor....the mythological Norse deity Thor, who has existed in legend since at least 1200 years before there even WAS such a thing as a trademark. Marvel has a trademark on his appearance, but there is NO WAY they can claim he is an original creation of theirs.
The name is completely blocked from anyone using it. Not taken, but actually blocked. If you try to use a name that someone else already hasthe message says "That character name is already in use". If the name is blocked the message says "That character name is unavailable"
There are a lot of things that shouldn't get genericed, but they do. Marvel wouldn't have a leg to stand on in a suit claiming that they own te name Thor, but NCSoft behaves as though they do.
Go with different mythology instead. I used Celtic mytholgy for my Stone/Fire Brute, Crom Cruaich. He's so obscure I hadn't even ever heard of him. But once I got the name and concept he was easy to create a storyline with, using Croatoa as a basis (and since Croatoa totally mauls Celtic mythology it gave me a bit more freedom with his design). -
Have you tried SuckerPunches online builder, might help you out in terms of formatting.

Quote:Ok, then the same should be applied to the other Dark powers. Tar Patch and Dark Servant should be given the same Recharge and End costs as Corrupters and Defender versions and they should be cloned to new pets and have their debuff values dropped to MM levels rather than Defender ones. Tar Patch would drop to from 30% to 22.5 Resist debuff (got that figure from comparing Acid Arrows difference between the 3 sets, since Acid Arrow drops so should Tar Patch). Dark Servant would drop from a 30% to-hit debuff to 18% and his heal would become equal to a MMs, so drops from 238 to 209.But the game is not balanced around IOs, so that would go against their other philosophy.
I don't understand the opposition.
The sets are balanced as sets. They are then affected with AT modifiers.
This would be the most correct way of going about things. It would also be rather a severe drop to the set overall in terms of effectiveness, at least for my Dark MM.
I don't want Twilight Grasp to be buffed because then I'd most likely lose those excellent versions of two of the key powers in the set in the name of balance. -

Quote:Not in the RWZ they don't. My Plant/Emp just went there instead and bought them off the store in the base.Given that the blue side has to run a short arc just to get access to their high level SOs (admittedly less of a problem now with IOs, but still a handicap), this is one thing I think the red side may get the better end of the deal. Nothing to see here devs. Nothing to balance. All is well.
