Limiting it to fiction is an unnecessary qualifier. The -icon ending is not unknown, especially used for collections, anthologies, and reference works. It's use predates Lovecraft. So, if someone uses the -icon ending for a book (fictional or non-fiction), why would you assume it must be a rip off of Lovecraft and the Necronomicon?

    Satyricon - ~190
    Poeticon Astronomicon - ~200s
    England's Helicon - 1600
    Panegyricon (various collections) - 1600s
    Synopticon - 1952
    Cryptonomicon - 1990
  2. Teleport is especially helpful if you have melee pets. TPFoe brings a foe in melee range. Team TP brings you and all your pets on top of a foe. With zombies, I'll use Team Teleport often as a substitute for the GoTo command. It also puts me there to spam the AoE heal from Twilight Grasp.

The Event has traditionally started the second to last week of Oct. Last year, it was scheduled to start the 20th, but started early on 18th during HeroCon. The year before that, it started the 22nd. And the year before that on the 18th. HeroCon is a week later this year (starting the 25th).

I'll be mildly ticked it they wait for HeroCon to start it.

And considering the competition... I think it's likely they'll start it as early as they can.

Am I really getting the +24.51 mph or the +10.19 mph..... And if this is messed up, then are other powers messed up. There is no section in the combat attributes for accuracy, just accuracy bonus. However, according to the set bonuses, I have 4 sets that give me 9% on one and 15% on each of the other 3 sets. But my accuracy bonus on combat Attributes are "Ultimate Accuracy Bonus +0.45x", and "Large Accuracy Bonus +0.18x", for a total of 1.63x. Whats going on?
The icons under the health bar report only the buff number from that power, and in the case of flight, is completely wrong.

    See here:

    Travel Power Status Icons

When you right click a travel power icon under your health bar the 'real numbers' that display are not necessarily understandable or reflect your actual Speed. However, the 'real numbers' concerning travel powers that display under the Combat Attributes and Monitor windows are correct. Here's a breakdown of the numbers shown by the travel icons:
    • Sprint: The Running Speed shown is the base running speed plus the buff the Sprint power is adding. It does not include other RunSpeed buffs the character may have.
    • SuperSpeed: The Running Speed shown is the base running speed plus the buff the SuperSpeed power is adding. It does not include other RunSpeed buffs the character may have. Since this may be over the RunSpeed cap, it can be a much higher speed than what you are actually running.
    • Flight: The Flying Speed shown includes the base flying speed an extra three times, making that number ridiculously high. This happens more than likely because, internally, there are an extra three buffs/debuffs to flying speed which normally cancel each other out and each one is adding in the base FlySpeed to the final buff equation.
    • Hover: The Flying Speed shown includes the base flying speed an extra two times, making that number ridiculously high. This happens more than likely because, internally, there are an extra two buffs/debuffs to flying speed equation.

Base RunSpeed is 14.32 mph. The buff to RunSpeed from Sprint is 10.19 mph. Thus, the Sprint icon under the health bar shows 24.51 (14.32 + 10.19).

Base JumpHeight is 4 ft. Sprint is giving you a JumpHeight buff of .4 ft. Thus the icon shows 4.4 ft.

Well, 3 sets at 15% does equal 45% (.45). However, if you do have 4 sets of 9% (.09), then that should be a bonus of 36% and not 18%. So, that's screwy. Were you exemplared at the time and two of those sets lost thier bonuses because you were more than three levels under the level of the IOs in the set?

You're base Accuracy modifier is 1 (100%). You multiply that by your chance ToHit (I'm simplifying things a bit). So, the game gives you a 75% chance to hit an even-level minion (with no other buffs or debuffs in play). You multiply that by 1 (100%), and your final chance to hit is 75% (.75 x 1.0).

With your IO Set Accuracy buffs, you Accuracy is now 1.63. Which means that your chance to hit an even level minion is now .75 x 1.63 = 1.22 or 122%. Of course, the game clamps that down to a maximum 95% to hit.

You can have 400 GB of RAM, when the game starts using more that 1.3 GB, it becomes unstable.

If you're using Windows Blinds, disable it. If that's not the case, then go to the Technical forum and start a new thread and then post the results of these two programs:

    • CoH Helper - it will show us basic computer settings and your CoH configuration.
    • HijackThis - it will show us what's running on your computer concurrently with CoH. Click on "Do a system Scan and save a logfile." It will automatically open up Notepad and put the info there. Make sure Wordwrap is off in Notepad (Format > Wordwrap unchecked) before you cut and paste here.

  9. Definitely update your video card driver.

Go to your manufacturers website to see if there are driver updates for your motherboard chipset/CPU. While you're there, you'll be able to see what kind of RAM you should get.

    Update Windows.

Until you get more RAM, create this macro:

    /macro ufx "unloadgfx"

This will create a click icon in your power tray that will launch the /unloadgfx command. Use it before and after you zone and interact with the Market. It clears your memory of unused textures and data. It will speed up your loading and make Market crashes less likely.

    stuck at updater

    Try:

    1. Delete checksum.coh from the CoH directory.

    2. Reboot the computer.

    3. Start the updater and let it verify files.

I crashed and the new leader was level 36 and got the next mission.
There's your problem. The 36 should not have picked up the mission. It would be wise to reinforce that message at the start of all TFs.

You can reset the mission, but for the TFs which have a hard level (the 'signature' TFs of the Freedom Phalanx, e.g.; but not a respec trial), resetting doesn't change the level of the mission.

I wonder if the SSK Anchor of a TF team can be reset by logging? Everyone would need to log off and then the correct leader logs back in first. And if it does work, how long does everyone need to log off to reset the SSK Anchor?
  12. Well, you could try shutting down even more background stuff that's running in the background (messenger) or accessing your hard drive (Search Indexer) while running the game or even accessing the Internet (windows update).

In fact, you can try shutting down your antivirus and browser protectors and see if they might be the culprit.

Cut and past your HijackThis log to here to see a report: http://www.hijackthis.de/

And then this site will help you interpret those start-up registries: http://pchell.com/support/hijackthistutorial.shtml
  13. Very mildly annoying. It's not like this is time-sensitive information. There's no reward for playing those arcs the day they go Live.

And since they're not being tested first on the Test Server, maybe they don't want a huge crush to try those arcs and risk a bug being found making them look bad. If the initial, smaller rush finds no problems with the arcs, then they can make really big announcements. At least, that's how I'd schedule it.

This has already been answered by the mods: By giving exclusive head-start info to fan/professional sites, the sites are more likely to feature the story. That's free advertising.

Also, those sites have readers who are not CoH players, and seeing a feature article about the game might bring them into CoH.

Really, Paragon/NCSoft gets yelled at for lack of marketing, and then when they do market, they get yelled at.

    On a different note:

    "Algonquin Hate Table"

    That's awesome!
  17. Cool beans! Looks like fun. Turn up some dance music and keep hopping the entire time for a workout. Thanks!

Added to Guide to Guides under peripherals.

Edit: Just noticed you have an original version here with more info, did you want that one removed from the Guide to Guides?

    Nested Quotes?

Did you all know: You can use the little up arrow next to the person's name in a quote (or quote pyramid) so as to jump to the post? Actually, I'm sure many of you did.

But, did you all know that if you use that little arrow to open up a new tab (in FireFox, it's CTRL+click) you can click on the to tag it and then close that window and it will still be tagged to show up in your posted reply? This way you don't lose your place in the thread you're reading.

Here's a little primer I posted in another thread that shows the before and after coding:

    Nested quotes:

Use the multiquote function to tag each post you want then hit any 'quote' or 'reply to thread' button.

Each tagged post will show up as a series of blocks... and hey, if you got that going on, is there really any need to 'nest' them?

But if you're set on nesting them move the second-to-last block right after [quote=name] tag of the last block and the third-to-last block right after the [quote=name] tag of the second-to-last block and so on. Raw tagging in editing looks like this...
    Code:
    [quote=Abigail] I say 'one.' [/quote]

    [quote=Bobby] I say 'two.' [/quote]

    [quote=Candy] I say 'three.' [/quote]

turn the above multi-quoted post into....

     [quote=Candy][quote=Bobby][quote=Abigail] I say 'one.' [/quote]I say 'two.' [/quote] I say 'three.' [/quote]
If the above is posted, it will look like this....

    Resistance

It's important to keep Defense and Resistance in mind when figuring out damage.

Defense determines whether you got hit or not. If an incoming attack has three components (e.g., smashing/energy/AoE), then if you have any Defense against any one or more of those components, you take the highest Defense number, and that will be the one that determines if you got hit.

If you do get hit, then Resistance comes into play. If you have different values of Resistance versus smashing and energy, then each Resistance value is used against each component. Smashing Resistance reduces the amount of damage of the smashing damage and Energy Resistance reduces the amount of damage of the energy damage.

So, in short, with Defense, the highest applicable Defense value is used.

With Resistance, each applicable Resistance value is used.
  21. This problem is typical when there isn't sufficient Test Server testing. After all, there wasn't a test for 2xp where this would have been flagged.

Same thing happened to the Wedding Pack and other Booster Packs that got a too-short test period (or none at all). Same thing happened with last year's Halloween event -- the two-hour play test periods weren't enough to show that the Spirits weren't spawning correctly, and then once that event goes Live, there's no time to correct it.
