Quote:EMpulse mentioned it... Doc will be taking over Ghost Falcon duties.Welcome Doc!
Since you didn't mention, I'll ask; What do you do at Paragon Studios?
That's right... the access to beta is right here.
Oh, no, wait, she's not. Where did Doc go? <pounding noises> Ah, no, stay away from the Vahz! <quickly tries to heal Doc and grab agro> Stay alive until I get you to the door. -
At least we now know why they were all shuffling their cubicles around in the December.

OK, War Witch, sorry to do this, but this one's a hard ball...
Now that the Mission Architect interface is in place, we players see how atrociously difficult it used to be to write arcs, but how relatively easy it is now that we have the MA.
When we asked for the legacy Task Forces to be updated (and devs and players agree which ones are sorely lacking), the old response was "it would be too much time taken away from writing new content." And we see that was true.... but not any more.
With the MA tool, we see how relatively easy it would be to tweak existing TFs to make the long ones shorter and the 'speed TFs' longer (e.g., with Katie Hannon we can add ambushes to the save the hostage or create a custom Katie who doesn't fly in the last mission). Or to change Viridian's arc into a Strike Force to give villains parity.
So, with the MA now in place, why can't this be done? Especially with Dr. Aeon being such an expert on arc mechanics?
(And know this...

I've always supported your policies, My Lady.) -

It has seven times the number of players as WoW. You're cultural IQ needs some help. Go read an issue of Us.

Joe "Hero 1" Morrissey was the main force behind the MA, especially getting it up and running. But his main job is writing content, and overseeing MA development -- as much as having the tools to write content is a help -- was taking time away from writing that content. And so, they hired Sean "Dr. Aeon" McCann to oversee the MA (and write content) so that Hero 1 can focus on writing canonical arcs. Hero 1 is also the keeper of the CoH Lore Bible.
Bruce "Horatio" Harlick is simply one of the writing staff (with excellent pedigree from PnP RP games... the original Foxbat of Champions PnP). -
In other news:
Ross "Marketing" Borden was promoted from Director of Business and Marketing to Vice-President of Publishing at NCSoft.
Ron "Animation" Freidman is no longer with Paragon Studios.
Paragon Studios has been averaging 2 new hires a month since August. The rednames we see is just the tip of the iceberg.
And... is Bruce "Horatio" Harlick still with Paragon Studios? The "Web" seems to indicate he left to be a lead designer of Farmville. -
Quote:You mean "D. Bales", no?Therefore, were pleased to introduce C. Doc Delilah Bales who is new to Paragon Studios, but brings a wealth of MMO experience and will be assuming Ghost Falcons previous role.
Also, does it help to be hired at Paragon Studios if your name rhymes with a current employee?

Quote:I get the feeling it's exactly what they say it is: Lead Design over everything is just too much for one person considering how big the game has become. And with all the new hires, it makes sense to break things up into teams. Since Posi has so much seniority over War Witch, he gets the special title of "Lead Designer of End Game Content" to justify his pay grade while WW moves up to the title "Lead Designer".Not trying to raise the Doom Meter(tm), but the move to work on the end game content for Posi is a *voluntary* move, correct? It could be read as a demotion.
I mean I think Posi will be great at developing a compelling end game since he's the one that largely brought inventions to CoH. I want the announcement to mean that he's just taking one for the team because he's really good at designing as opposed to promoting someone else because management wants a "change of direction" or other nonsense.
This is very much unlike what happened at Cryptic where Jack left the position of Lead Designer (to Posi) to move to non- and other-development work and stepping out of CoH development. Posi is very much remaining in Development... end game content.... RAIDS*!!!!!!!1!1!
Posi's mantra as Lead Designer was "give the players what they want (within reason)", and WW's mantra is "I love the players!"
Awwwww....
*Maybe Base Raids and Cathedral of Pain will be fixed! -

Congrats on your promotion.
But... Positron was Lead Designer. So, did you two have a duel for the title or did you alter his reservations to Seoul and arrange for him to wind up in a Siberian prison?
EDIT : Nevermind, just saw EMpulse's post explaining your promotion.
And your interview with MMORPG.com -
Here's some videos of my Dark/Dark/Power farming. He's IO'd out not for defense or resistance, but for recharge and endurance.
The routine is:
1. Torrent the spawn onto their butts.
2. While they're grounded, use Darkest Night as an AoE Debuff and aggro-puller.
3. Hide and put down a Tar Patch for them to run into.
4. When they're bunched up, run out and debuff them with Fear, and if there are real nasties in there, Howling Twilight and Dark Pit which is enough AoE stun to stun bosses.
5. Cone 'em! Alternate between Tentacles and Night Fall. Sure, they do moderate damage, but when you multiply that by 15 foes each application... that's a lot of damage. I'll throw in a single target attack now again, especially against bosses or mezzers.
6. By the time the cones hit, their ACC is floored. So, no need to softcap this Defender. There are enough quick deaths to provide all the inspirations I need for break frees and a little extra damage now and then.
7. Coning them to death is sufficient for farming, but every other spawn I'll have Blackstar ready to finish them off.
The video is from the infamous family farm; it's set for 0+/8x/no bosses solo.
Coning them to death.

Forgive me for not wanting to look through it myself.

However, I went into the game to test it and it did nothing.

Quote:The irony of this problem is that CO is supposed to be 'inspired' by the Champions table top RP mechanics, which uses the HERO system, which is a point based system. I'm not familiar with HERO per se, and CO is only 'inspired' by the HERO system and not actually using the HERO system, however, adherence to the tenets of a point-based system would have helped here.Another casualty of the "open" powers system was the melee archetype. In CoH the melee archetype is justified by granting the melee archetype higher defenses. This not only compensates for "being in more danger" but it also provides a tradeoff justification for surrendering range as a gameplay option. People play scrappers even though they are giving up range, because scrappers offer a completely different gameplay experience. In CO, there is no unique gameplay option that melee focused characters provide, unless you count dying as a gameplay option. Melee offense in CO gives up a lot intrinsicly just by not being ranged. But that option comes with no counterbalancing options unavailable to non-melee characters. So they've essentially created a game which penalizes the conceptual choice of not using range - which is what melee is in CO: its the voluntary choice to not use range.
The rule here is: if choices have no downsides, all the upsides must be identical.
In most open-ended point-based systems, a melee attack would be considered an attack that has a 'limitation' or a 'disadvantage', namely, such a short range. That would give points back to the creator in order to invest those points into some other ability, such as more damage (or snares or slows so as to close in on a foe). If CO was truly the point-based system Jack originally touted it would be, then melee might actually have been balanced in CO against ranged attacks. -
Actually, there are some auras that get drawn before their avatar is and you can see disembodies auras at a distance.
But I think the OP wants the draw-distance of auras on for the sake of identifying what powers are running so you know what you're up against. This is the reason powers have limited customization in PvP, so you can recognize what an opponent is doing.
While a consistent and rational draw-distance policy of combat auras would be nice, I would imagine that this one's at the bottom of the to-do list compared to so much other stuff that could use a consistency pass-through. -
Well.... someone turn them into time-traveling MA arcs.

Might want to check out Victory. Before the EU Servers were established, many EU players congregated there and many still are there. They'll match your play times better.
-
(Not to mention that many vets do indeed maintain a visible presence on the public boards even while in closed beta....)

Yeah, it's a bit ironic. But what I think GM Luminary is referring to is using the same name and password you use here for other sites.
For example, if you go to the forum of a RMT site and put in your name/password as Canine/123abc, well guess what? That RMTer will try to use Canine/123abc in the PlayNC website or to log into CoH hoping that you use that same name/password here. And it's not just RMT web sites that will do that, any attack site, or site that's been hacked will collect your name/password and they're try to use that combo on other sites.
One would assume that NCSoft, which runs these boards isn't going to use the name/password of the forums to hack the account you have with them.
Of course, the problem is that bulletin board software may have security holes and be cracked much easier than the server logins, thus allowing hackers access to your account. -
Quote:Riiight...It wasn't a troll post.
However, this is what... the 9th or 10th troll post of a PP post this year.
You are off to a good start...
Someone claiming that there's a super-secret closed beta going on, calls it alpha, and bases that claim on the absence of certain vets who are not absent is perfectly reasonable and not designed to get a reaction out of folks or getting a denial from rednames and thus phishing for info....
And what other posts of PP's have I responded to in any way "this year"?
