Game locks up entering map

I have a newly built computer and am having issues running CoH. Most of the time I'm able to login, get passed the character creation screen and load the map. Once the map is loading and it dumps me into the area CoH locks up. I've tried running different Catalyst drivers (12.2, 12.1, 11.9, 11.4, 11.3). Between each I've used driver sweeper to make sure to do a clean install of the drivers. Every so often I'm able to get into CoH by using TweakCoH and setting everything to Low. This is the only way I've been able to get the map area to actually not crash, and even then the success rate is rather low (15%).

First question, does CoH run in safe mode. "Safe Mode" as in game safe mode not windows safe mode.

H: Blaster 50, Defender 50, Tank 50, Scrapper 50, Controller 50, PB 50, WS 50
V: Brute 50, Corruptor 50, MM 50, Dominator 50, Stalker 50, AW 50, AS 50
Top 4: Controller, Brute, Scrapper, Corruptor
Bottom 4: (Peacebringer) way below everything else, Mastermind, Dominator, Blaster

I have to try safe mode a little bit more. I did try it one time and it worked. However I have been able to get in the game from time to time as well. I'll test it more tonight just to make sure it wasn't a fluke.

The one thing that really jumps out at me is that you have Ambient Occlusion set to High performance. I'd recommend turning AO off completely.

Also, are you connecting wirelessly when you run the game? (Ralink RegistryWriter entries in Services make me think a wireless adapter using the Ralink chipset is installed).

If so, try connecting the computer using ethernet instead (with the wireless adapter disabled or unplugged) and see if you get the same problems. If the problems stop, it may indicate problems with the wireless signal (interference, problems with the wireless adapter, poor signal strength, problems with the router, etc.). If you still have the problems with it connected by ethernet it will likely rule out wireless being the problem.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

OK, So turn off AO and unplug the wireless. Not a problem. Right now the machine is only about two feet away from my wireless router. Once it's put together in working condition (getting CoH to play is the last step, all other games/programs are fine) then it'll be moved farther away.

With it being that close to the router already, if using a wired connection fixes the problem then you either have some really nasty interference or some major wireless issues.

What brand/model are the wireless adapter and wireless router? I'm not familiar with the Ralink chipset but it's been a few years since I worked for a manufacturer that made wireless products.

Still having the problem. Here's what I tried.

- Removed the Tenda Wireless N USB Adapter, went wired
- Turned off AO
- Tried Safe Mode

Even in safe mode I still have the same problem when I made it past character selection and past the map loading screen. But once the map itself opens up the game locks up and I get the AMD display driver has stopped responding (just noticed this, but due to the symptoms I guess it has been happening and didn't notice it).

At this point, I'd start trying newer known good drivers with the same setup you have now.

I'd start with the 11.9 drivers and work my way up. I'm not seeing anything else that's unusual in the HJT or CoH Helper logs.

EDIT: Actually, one more question. Are you running the game through Steam or is Steam just running in the background when you play? In either case, you might try shutting down Steam so that you can eliminate any network traffic from Steam causing a conflict.

D'oh.

I just spotted something I didn't recognize in the HJT log that I missed before.

Easy Tune 6 is software that comes with the motherboard and is an overclocking tool. It's very possible that Easy Tune 6 is interfering and causing the the hangups.

My recommendation would be to make sure nothing is being overclocked (motherboard or graphics), the fans are set at stock speen and then uninstall the Easy Tune utility and test to see if that resolves the issue. We've had other overclocking or fan control programs cause issues in the past such as the Riva Tuner and similar tools.

I've tried running different Catalyst drivers (12.2, 12.1, 11.9, 11.4, 11.3). Between each I've used driver sweeper to make sure to do a clean install of the drivers.

Also I had removed all the overclocking utilities then went back into the BIOS and set everything back to Auto. I downloaded and ran CCleaner to clean up the registry to remove the unused entries. So no more evidence of EasyTune.

Still having the same problem. I did swap in my old Radeon HD 4870 and the game loaded up just fine though running the Catalyst 12.2 drivers. The HD6870 was an open box item that I bought, but with CoH the only game I'm having issues with.

OK, I'm going crazy it seems. I was placing the video card used to test back into the system I pulled it from and just to see had my daughter log into her account after a reboot. She did so and was playing no problems. I had her exit out and back in...it still worked. My wife then tried it with her account and changed from windowed to full screen before logging in. And she's in playing now. I'm going to see if it still loads up after a reboot and turning some of the settings back up (right now everything is at its lowest settings).

Posted

OK, I'm even more confused now. On my computer I cannot play on my account due to this issue. However, I can play using any of the other accounts in the family. The wife's and both kids are able to play fine.

I go to my daughters computer and login and can play. Just not on my computer. When I tried their accounts on my box I didn't login to their profiles, I used mine.

To me I see no reason for this.

Posted

OK, problem solved. Crazy, but solved.

Since it was just my account on one box I deleted my account name folder from the CoH folder in Program Files(x86). That didn't do it so I started searching around some more.

I went into AppData/Local/NCSoft/CoX/VistedMaps and deleted all the files in there. So now everything runs perfect. All settings maxed out, even with AO.

Thanks for the help.

Ok. That would make sense. It sounds like there was some corruption in the VisitedMaps files.

Glad you found a solution. I'll have to put this in my "weird things happen" list of fixes.

Isn't this that what we used to do when maps would come up blank back in pre-i13 times?
