Some people collect the base salvage.
As to Brainstorms: Base Salvage converts to Brainstorms which converts to Invention salvage (at the invention tables).

Brainstorms are the intermediary salvage for converting base salvage to regular invention salvage.
Base Salvage -> Brainstorms -> Invention salvage
Look at the recipes for conversions (yes, multiple recipes) on the normal crafting table (not the base invention tables).
Peruse them thoroughly, as different recipes will yield different results.

as a returning player I still have base salvage. I thought it was completely useless but I see it can be traded on the market, a few pieces for a very interesting price.
