Looking for Claws/Regen build
My main, and the only toon I have all 5 Incarnate powers slotted to Tier 4, is a Claws / regen scrapper. He's not the most effective toon in my arsenal, but he's a lot of fun.
I'm no good with the number-crunching. I've tried using MIDS to squeeze maximum utility out of a build, but I can never factor everything properly. Meh.
Some advice I can give. Take the fighting set early on; you'll want those toggles. You might want Leadership as well, but it's pricey if you don't team on a regular basis.
I skipped Hasten, but I don't recommend doing so, as you'll need those Regen powers available as often as possible in big fights. Obviously Moment of Glory will be your best friend, but unless you perma, save it for when you need it.
My personal attack chain really only consists 4 attacks plus Confront, so I skipped a few Claws powers on this build. Against one large foe, this serves me well (coupled with my Destiny void power) but in mobs I admit that I sometimes suffer. And yes, I use Confront a lot. It's not a choice I recommend for most scrappers but I find myself tanking often enough that I needed a way to grab aggro.
For my Alpha, I usually have Spiritual slotted, which wouldn't be necessary had I taken Hasten. But with all 8 Tier 4 Alphas crafted, I can play with what the situation calls for.
Level for level, you're squishier than most scrappers, and claws don't do as much damage as many sets. Try to resist diving into mobs that can overpower you by pulling or avoiding. Like I said, I do great against single foes, even when they con purple to me, but mobs can take me down, especially if there's an end-drain in the bunch.
In the end, it's a lot more about having fun than about min/maxing an AT for the benefit of others. This is a game that, for now at least, you pay money to play.
Well, here is what I came up with for a build (first draft). There are no purple sets, or hamidon enhancements in this (with the changes in game economy, I am far from wealthy, lol). Melee defense was my biggest concern, followed by recharge, then regeneration. I got the base idea from a thread by JumpingJackSlash (and the advice he got from Claws & Effect). I tried to make sure I had the basics by level 14, so I can do flashback missions and still have decent powers when I exemp down. I took none of the APP powers, since very few of them interested me (Shadow Meld looked good, though). I didn't really have many slots to spare for them anyway.

Only thing I would do differently with your build is go for S/L defense instead of Melee. Melee defense is going to do nothing against ranged attacks, whereas S/L will get applied to most attacks, in general.
IMO, it's not worth going for positional defense on a melee character unless you get a good chunk (32.5%) for at least melee and range. Going for the typed defense will also be less slot intensive and allow you to better slot things like Health and Fast Healing.
FU's slotting needs to be changed since Guassian's offers no Acc, which makes the power pointless if I can't hit anything so you can get the buff.

OK, considered what you said and did some rethinking. Shadow Meld is probably the best defense boost I can get, so I dropped/shuffled things to get it as early as possible. Gave up Tactics, but gained 2 set bonuses to accuracy so my net accuracy was hardly affected at all. Picked up more ranged defense and S/L defense, but kept melee close to 32.5.
Took the Revive power at 50 mostly for character flavor, rather than Resilience with the Aegis unique. I already have good status protection, and a few more % in S/L resistance isn't as helpful as a self rez with 100% HP/75% End (plus its cool to be able to stand up and say 'It ain't over yet.')
I had to take either Dark Blast or the Moonbeam (sniper) attack to get Shadow Meld, decided on the sniper since I was only going to leave a default slot in it, and I already have Focus for ranged attacks vs runners. With the sniper I can use it to pull or plink from a long way away (if I use it at all).

... and after some serious skull banging, I have revised my build once more. It was pointed out to me that building for melee defense is not-too-bright, if you do it at the expense of S/L defense and range defense. Having lived in Missouri, though, you have to Show Me things. Fortunately, someone did, and explained a few other things as well, like "Why MoG is not to be put off til level 50' and '6 slotting Integration is a tad wasteful'.
With this new build, I have excellent S/L and melee defense. I also get to keep my invisibility for sneaking thru missions, and my passive regen is around 675%. My ST attack chain is FollowUp>Focus>Slash>Strike, and can be sustained indefinitely with my basic end recovery. Accuracy and recharge are good overall, and while this build has no purple/hamidon IOs, it is NOT cheap. I have 5 LotG +recharges in it, for example.
Note: I do not have a traditional travel power. I am using Ninja Run, Jump Pack and temp powers (Raptor Pack, etc) for zone movement. I use Sprint (+stealth IO) and Stealth for invisibility in missions or during zone travel. My end costs are lower overall in combat by a large margin, compared to the SS/CJ combo I had before. If I need a bunch of extra jump height in combat, I can always toggle Ninja Run on for a moment and then detoggle.

OP, unfortunately, your friends are correct on this one. There really isn't much hope for you old scrapper. Just tinkering in Mids I was able to build one that had a recharge of almost 200%, but would end up costing about 15b inf to build. Not terribly viable, and not worth the expense. Sadly, in keeping with their long tradition, the dev team's knee jerk reactions have invalidated this powerset completely. I know you have a certain degree of emotional attachment to the toon, and there are always some holdouts that claim a broken or worthless AT or powerset still has value (read Kheldian), but in reality you would be far better served to make a WP scrapper. They can reach the def cap without really sacrificing anything the set is good at, and are more survivable in pretty much every case I can think of.
I wish I had better news, but the only real regen scrappers you see these days are older dogs that remember how much better balanced and more fun it was in the old days. That, and people that can't let them go. The first scrapper I ever made was a claws regen, like everyone else, and I'll post his build here for you to take a look at, this was a good long time ago, and I pretty much mothballed him as non viable compared to other toons I built at less expense with better results. He was also a thematic toon, and there were elements of him I didn't want to lose, despite how they negatively impacted his totals. With a set this poorly designed, there's only so much you can do.

To the OP:
Here are two example builds, one is reasonable, one is BBQ'd.
The first can run FU -> Slash -> Focus -> Slash, maintain perma-hasten, has over 32.5% s/l defense, over 50% uptime on IH and shmeld, with plenty of regen, recovery, and enough accuracy (slash is the only problem child, but it's covered as long as you have 1 FU up).
Also, shadow meld puts you over softcap to everything while it's up, which is important.

It's a little bit more survivable because of the extra 3 resistance, the main bonus to this build is that it can actually run FU -> Focus -> Slash, so your damage output will definitely be higher (especially with 2 BU procs in the chain).

And while I normally wouldn't even recommend such a costly build, I thought it would at least be worth pointing out that /regens definitely do *not* suck. Just because our general understanding of survivability makes it seem as though they do, it is far from the truth in actual experience. As many of the long time regens here could tell you, it's experience that makes a regen good, not a build.

OP, unfortunately, your friends are correct on this one. There really isn't much hope for you old scrapper. Just tinkering in Mids I was able to build one that had a recharge of almost 200%, but would end up costing about 15b inf to build. Not terribly viable, and not worth the expense. Sadly, in keeping with their long tradition, the dev team's knee jerk reactions have invalidated this powerset completely. I know you have a certain degree of emotional attachment to the toon, and there are always some holdouts that claim a broken or worthless AT or powerset still has value (read Kheldian), but in reality you would be far better served to make a WP scrapper. They can reach the def cap without really sacrificing anything the set is good at, and are more survivable in pretty much every case I can think of.
I wish I had better news, but the only real regen scrappers you see these days are older dogs that remember how much better balanced and more fun it was in the old days. That, and people that can't let them go. The first scrapper I ever made was a claws regen, like everyone else, and I'll post his build here for you to take a look at, this was a good long time ago, and I pretty much mothballed him as non viable compared to other toons I built at less expense with better results. He was also a thematic toon, and there were elements of him I didn't want to lose, despite how they negatively impacted his totals. With a set this poorly designed, there's only so much you can do. |
So you're saying that regen sucks so bad that the only people who EVER play it are the people who can't let go of their formerly overpowered builds?
I can't even think of anything to say to explain how stupid I think that notion is. At least not without getting modded.
There are people who are quite skilled at the game, and skilled at building characters, who all think that /Regen is still a perfectly viable set.
Oh, I get it, you're one of those that thinks that if a set is actually balanced, and not brokenly overpowered, it's not a valid set.
/Regen just needs some debuff resistance, other than that it's still just fine. And for the record, I'm not one of those "old dogs pining for the set's glory days". I started playing well after it had been brought back down to reality. (Because a scrapper tanking Hamidon is not reality, that is a sign of a severely overpowered set)

Been going on a few years now right? Should have built in resistance for it by now
Going for 40% s/l defense (getting barrier to softcap that) and 32.7% range on mine. Can't get enough recharge to run FU-Focus-Slash gapless but I think I can live with a 0.3 or so gap in it.
(Because a scrapper tanking Hamidon is not reality, that is a sign of a severely overpowered set)

Hi,
I've been gone from the game for several years, returned a couple of weeks ago, been enjoying (and learning) a lot of the new content. I have a L34 Claws/Regen scrapper that I haven't played since I got back, mostly because my friends (who remained in CoX while I was gone) have told me that "Regen got nerfed/changed/gutted, its not worth playing anymore".
I respect their opinions, because they've played the game since Beta, but deleting him or just 'not playing him' doesn't sit well with me. Looking over my old build (which is from the early days of IOs, lol) I'm obviously going to respec him if I want to play him.
Unfortunately, there are no current guides for Claws/Regen that I can find.
I usually played solo, or in 2-3 man teams with my scrapper, so I'd like to build for that. Can anyone recommend a build for me? I'd also appreciate any tips/tricks/warnings you may have for playing a claws/regen in the Issue 20 world.
